Construction of the North Wales Prison is progressing really well, despite the recent high winds and rain-

fall. While parts of the site are quite muddy we are working hard to ensure the mud stays on the site. We

have road sweeper making regular trips, when needed, around the roads leading up to the site to clean

up any mud.

The first houseblock is going up quickly, at the rear of the site. The central core housing the wing admin-

istration and control rooms, serveries and group rooms is up to the fourth floor and the four wings are up

to the third floor. The second houseblock has also started with concrete panels being placed on the first

of the wings.

The support building, outside the fence at the front of the prison is now being fitted out with its heating

and electrical provisions, internal walls have been erected and the work is advancing to plan. The entry

building that includes the gate has now had the concrete panels mounted and internal framework is al-

most complete.

The steelwork of the workshops in the centre of the prison is erected, as is the education building. The

prison remains on target to be completed in 2017 as planned.

Ancillary building works are progressing well with the Kitchen foundation slab complete and precast pan-

Community Engagement update

VIP VISITS

Stephen Crabb – Secretary of State for Wales and Andrew Selous Par-

liamentary Under Secretary for Ministry of Justice visited the site on

Monday 9th November. The ministers were very impressed by the pro-

gress made on the site.

Ian Lucas MP for Wrexham also visited the site on Thursday 26th No-

vember where he also had a tour of the site and met local businesses

working on the project.

Ministerial visit on 9th November 2015

Last month, the future Governor of North Wales Prison invited local residents to meet with himself his Senior

Management Team, Wrexham Council and North Wales Police. The meeting was chaired by local resident and

Chair of Abenbury Community Council.

Residents were updated on the project and were given the opportunity to ask any questions.

The governor outlined his commitment to build strong relationships

with the local community. He advised that he has employed a very

committed senior team who are dedicated to doing a good job. He

reassured residents that he is here for the long haul.

He then went onto say that the North Wales Prison will create long

term sustainable jobs which local people of Wrexham will benefit from.

On 26th November, the future governor attended a meeting of Wrexham Industrial Estate Business Forum.

The Forum has been operating on the estate for 14 years and enables businesses on Wrexham Industrial Es-

tate to come together to discuss and participate in matters that could have an effect on the economic, financial

or environmental prosperity of their business and the general economy. The Forum currently has 185 members

and continues to grow this number year on year.

Interest in the prison project from Forum members was high and many questions on the prison’s future operation

followed his presentation. The presentation focussed on the rehabilitative culture of the prison. Members were

also keen to hear about how the industries workshops would work and the job opportunities.

Women in Construction

17 women attended a Women in Construction event designed ,organised and delivered by Lendlease and the

North Wales Economic Ambition Board at the Learning & Ambition Academy on the North Wales Prison site

The event involved professionals from Lendlease and their Supply Chain on the North Wales Prison project

sharing their stories and routes into employment with students from Coleg Cambria and Glyndwr University.

The group looked at personal goals for career progression and personal development and have identified ways

to work together using coaching and mentoring from within the group and beyond to meet these.

In addition to this the group have identified ways to promote careers in construction to the future generation to

encourage more females to join the sector. This included making an advert on the day!

Event co-ordinator from Lendlease who facilitated the event commented " it

was great event with a constant buzz in the room , it was really encourag-

ing to see how passionate all attendees have been about working with

each other and to work with local schools to encourage the next generation

to join the industry and learn about the many diverse roles available "

Student visits

44 students from Loughborough University visited the site for

the day on Tuesday 10th November. Students enjoyed the

visit and the opportunity to have a site tour and learn about the

roles of Commercial and Project Managers on site.

31 Students from Coleg Cambria visited the North Wales

Prison site. This included students who have made Godfrey’s

Garden furniture that was featured in last month Newsletter.

The students really enjoyed the visit and were very surprised

at the size of the actual site.

27 students from St Pauls Primary School visited the site on Wednesday 25th November. They completed

a work book designed by lendlease learning about site safety and the wild life that has been relocated. The

students walked down to Godfrey's Garden to safely view progress on site. Fay Green Head Teacher said "

The children had a super time , it was a great opportunity of them to see a real construction project " some of

the children are residents of Pentre Maelor the local community situated near the site

Naming the prison:

A shortlist of six potential names has now been created for the prison in Wrexham.

We asked for suggestions from the community earlier in the year and names flooded in from individuals, social

media, historical groups and schools. A group of local people from North Wales then sifted through all the sug-

gestions and created a shortlist .

The name will have to be signed off by the Queen as the prison is Crown Property. To give any feedback on

these suggestions, please email [email protected].

Thriving Partnerships

DWP and Lendlease are continuing to build a strong partnership to engage local people to connect to em-

ployment and training opportunities at the North Wales

Prison site. The new Jobcentre Plus representative

working on site with Lendlease has already started to

make a great impact by promoting the project and oppor-

tunities at Jobcentre across North Wales. Ceri is working

alongside Lend lease Project Skills Coordinator to man-

age the new Learning and Ambition Academy which has

already hosted training and visits for over 200 people

since opening in last month.

Christmas Market on Site

The Christmas Market started on the 30th November all week and on Wednesday 7th and Friday 11th De-

cember. There were a range of stall in attendance on site selling jewellery , cards , pickles and other Christ-

mas goodies.

Lend Lease representatives previously went to Morgan Llywd School to listen to presentations from some

students about their Business idea for the Christmas Market on site.

Their ideas involved making gift tags, Hot Chocolate cones and

Christmas Tree Shortbread. The students from Morgan Llywd that

took part in the Dragons Den style challenge, presented their stall

idea to team members from Lendlease and as a result, produced the

treats to sell at the Christmas market on site. Their ideas were well

received and as a result Morgan Llwyd school attended the Christ-

mas Market with their mince pies , hot chocolate mixes, Christmas

Tree Shortbread and Christmas Tags. The students had a great time

learning how to run a real business and the treats they made were made very tasty!

The Business Teacher at the school commented “ This has been a fantastic opportunity for the students for

working on a real business project and bringing to life what they will be learning about business over the next

12 months “

Coleg Cambria also attended with some wooded reindeers that were

also very popular. Thank you to Coleg Cambria was instrumental in

supporting us with arranging the attendance of local stall holders,
