It was the former Bishop of Ludlow, John Saxbee, who I first heard describe a Deanery Synod as a group of Anglicans waiting to go home. Those of us who have attended our share of such meetings can, I think, be forgiven for understanding such a definition, and might want to extend it to Diocesan Synod as well. But there is more to it than that, and actually synods can play a significant part in the life of the Church. “Synod” means “meeting together”, and it is as representatives of different parishes meet in a synod that we can determine how best to work together for the good of all. As its March meeting, the Diocesan Synod addressed two matters which are potentially very significant for each parish in the diocese and for the diocese as a whole. The first was to move towards agreeing a diocesan strategy, or plan, or MAP (Mission Action Plan) – call it what you will. Across the diocese in recent years, parishes and benefices have been working on their MAPs; a diocesan MAP will seek to identify ways in which as a whole diocese we better encourage, support and enable local MAPs to be put into practice. Our overall strap line is “Proclaiming Christ, growing disciples”, as we pray and work for spiritual and numerical growth, order our ministry to serve that aim, and continue to contribute to the good of our local communities. So, in response to a great deal of listening around the diocese, not least through the Follow! process last autumn, the diocesan MAP will contain a wide range of ingredients. These will include the development of work with children and families, care of our buildings, promotion of courses to encourage enquirers to learn more about the Christian faith, and a lot more besides. Secondly, the Diocesan Synod has agreed that from 1st January 2017,

parishes will no longer be asked to contribute a prescribed amount in parish share, but will be asked to make a free will offering towards ministry across the diocese. I know that there is still loads of education, information and encouragement to be shared to ensure that “informed generosity “becomes the order of the day and so that, in the words of St Paul, “God is able to provide us with every blessing in abundance”. My hope is that this will help us to put money in its right perspective, supporting our mission to be the people of God in this diocese. Planning and paying go together; and prayer belongs with them. Watch out for opportunities to go deeper in prayer, not least around Pentecost (May 8th - 15th) in response to our Archbishops’ call to prayer.

+ Richard

From Parish Share to Parish Offer

Since Diocesan Synod decided in March to move to a new system of prayerful, freewill contributions to a common fund, members of the working group are still visiting deaneries and benefices to help everyone to under-stand the new way of providing for ministry throughout the diocese from 1 January 2017. If you would like one of us to visit, please get in touch. Revd Richard Jones, Chair, Parish Offer Working Group [email protected]

Corvedale Primary School The half term has been very short, only four weeks and four days, but it seems like we’ve crammed such a lot in. The Mothering Sunday lunch was very popular. Twenty five mums and grandmas joined the children for a splendid roast dinner. They were also presented with daffodils and hellebores courtesy of Rob and Sue Povall. A recent survey of parents endorsed all the work we are doing to keep the children safe at the school. The new fencing has been a major contribution to that. Parents were worried about the car parking and how this would be affected once work on the village hall refurbishment starts. The governors and I are working with the village hall committee members to make sure both the refurbishment and access to the school have the minimum of disruptions. Life as the Headteacher of a small country school is never dull, you never quite know what’s going to happen next. Only recently I found myself babysitting a small lamb for the afternoon. One of the mums (of the children) was helping in school and couldn’t leave the orphaned lamb at home so I found myself volunteering – well you have to

don’t you?. Things were going fine. It snuggled down in its box for a sleep, I carried on with some paper work, when we were both rather rudely disturbed by a loud music lesson. News from Onny C of E (A) Primary School and Little Pippins Nursery Another busy term at Onny and now looking forward to the summer term and hopefully some wonderful sunny weather for us all to enjoy! Our nursery is thriving and there is much interest in our new two-year-old provision; with nursery now open five days a week. “Little Lambs” runs on a Friday morning and finished the term with an Easter egg hunt on the school field. It seems to have been a term for dressing up and having fun as well as raising money for charities this term. “World Book Day” brought a range of characters into school with their favourite books. The children took part in competitions to design a story sack or story box for the nursery children and make an alien from junk materials. They also wrote

Class 2 invited parents to hear all about what they had learnt and watch the space animations that they made. “Sports Relief” saw all the children dressed as their favourite sports person or dressed for their favourite sport. Class 3 organised games for the younger children to enjoy. Class 1 have been looking at food and made their own bread. They are visiting “Tesco” and “Pizza Express” early next term as they continue the topic. It will be good to begin growing vegetables in our raised beds again this year. We are very grateful to the Diocese for funding a new playground surface this term. Over the Easter holidays some playground games will be painted on the new surface for all the children to enjoy. We must say a huge thank you to all our parent, grandparent and community volunteers who help us at school with hearing readers, accompanying the children on trips off site and all the continuing help in creative upcycling projects in the outdoor environment. The “Friends of Onny School” work so hard raising funds. Our “Big Breakfast” event was very popular – thank you for all the support. The children are doing a “Bunny Bounce” as the last event this term. We finish the term with our Easter service in Onibury church on Wednesday and every child will take home an Easter egg to enjoy, kindly donated by “FOOS” Penny Knight - Headteacher

West Mercia Police and Shropshire Libraries have joined forces to deliver policing to rural communities in Shropshire.

For the first time, Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) will join Shropshire Libraries’ mobile library service to visit villages and hamlets. The mobile library service visits up to 15 locations each day, including public houses, village halls and other community bases, in locations that would not routinely be visited by police. On arriving at each location, PCSOs will be available to meet with local residents to discuss any concerns, or carry out foot patrols. The scheme is being trialled across mid-Shropshire in March and April. The first patrol will take place tomorrow (Tuesday 8 March 2016), where PCSO Lynn Birch will join the library team and visit Leebotwood, Longnor, Little Ryton, Dorrington, Stapleton, Stapleton Common, Hook-a-gate, Annscroft, Longden, Longden Common, Pulverbatch, Picklescott and All Stretton. Full details of routes can be found online at www.westmercia.police.uk, and throughout each patrol on Twitter (@ShrewsburyCops).

It’s a wonderful time of year to appreciate the natural beauty of the Ludlow Constituency, and to celebrate new life – both through the resurrection of Christ and the seasonal reawakening of plants and animals. Leaves are greening hedgerows and trees and lambs leaping around the fields. Next month, this will be celebrated at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Malvern Spring Festival, from 5th-8th May. I am delighted to be attending as this year’s President of the Royal Three Counties Show. I hope to see some familiar faces from South Shropshire exhibiting at the Spring Festival, and others at the agricultural Royal Three Counties Show from 17th-19th June. As England's largest livestock and equine show, the Royal Three Counties celebrates the best of rural life and farming. This sector has been at the heart of the Marches counties’ economic and cultural heritage for centuries. Farmers have faced some tough times recently, so these Shows provide welcome opportunities to demonstrate the best of British rural life. As a farmer myself, I am acutely aware of the current challenges facing many in farming communities. We have just had two cows test positive for Bovine TB recently, the seventh time in recent years. Any farmer will tell you of the distress caused by Bovine TB, but it affects us all, not only piling pressure on British producers, but also adding to costs in the shops and costing taxpayers £100 million each year. The Government is working through a 25 year multi-pronged strategy to eliminate the disease. This is essential and momentum needs to be maintained. It is worth making clear that it is not just livestock farming that is facing pressure. Statistics from the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs show that in the last five years, incomes in horticulture have fallen by 43%. Arable farms have been hit by falling global prices, as incomes from cereals and general cropping have more than halved since 2010. To alleviate pressure on farming, the Government is taking action to enable a productive, resilient food industry by further cutting red tape (there have been 34,000 fewer farm inspections a year since 2010), as well as working to create more apprenticeships and grow our skills base. Since 2010 more than 600 new export markets for UK food and drink have been opened, nearly three a week, growing sales by over £1 billion. From this month tax changes come into effect to enable farmers to average their incomes for tax purposes across a five year period, rather than the previous two, reflecting seasonal

differences and volatility in food prices. This should also help farmers in South Shropshire. While industry pressures need to be tackled, there are plenty of encouraging things going on in the countryside. I am pleased that my Parliamentary Private Secretary is leading the campaign to restore hedgehog numbers, working with the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, whose Chief Executive leads this organisation from her home on Clee Hill. I am taking a close interest in their progress.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTES Diddlebury & Westhope WI We opened our meeting this month with Pat Baynham standing in for Kath who sent her apologies for not attending the meeting due to a rotten cold. Other apologies for absence were from Emma and Judy. Pat read and signed the minutes from last month’s meeting and we went on to discuss various bits of business. Mary Holland reported that the Quiz we organised at the beginning of March was a great success and thanked everyone who attended, helped organise, or supplied cakes, as we raised £95.00 for WI funds which was fantastic. A committee meeting was organised for Tuesday 22nd March at 7pm to discuss ideas for our Burwarton Show entry, so we need to get our creative thinking caps on for ideas for this year’s title “The Olympics”. Volunteers to attend the WI Spring Council in Shrewsbury were sought, and Jayne Disley and our first time attendee, Joy Williams agreed they’d like to go. Joy Williams came to our meeting for the first time this month, and Mary welcomed her on behalf of us all and we all very much look forward to seeing Joy at our future meetings. That’s 1 new member for each of the last two months, so let’s hope we can keep the record going and get another new member or even 2 next month!!! With all our business concluded, our speaker for this month was invited to start his talk. This month’s speaker was Mr Crowe and his talk was titled “Everywhere the Glint of Gold” – The Story of Tutankhamun’s Tomb. Mr Crowe started by giving us a brief history lesson on ancient Egypt. He then took us to the story of the Earl of Carnarvon and of Howard Carter who famously discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun. Other Pharaoh’s tombs were found but the elusive Tutankhamun’s was not found and Howard Carter was convinced it was there to be found. He managed to persuade the Earl of Carnarvon to fund the project of finding the tomb and after much searching in 1922, Howard Carter did find the entrance to the tomb. The Earl of Carnarvon was sent for and the first glimpse after 3000 years of all the treasures left in the tomb were to be seen. Howard Carter was a very meticulous preserver and took great care with all the most exquisite items that were to be found in the tomb. It took Carter 10 years to painstakingly excavate everything from the

tomb, an agreement between the Carnarvon family and the Egyptian authorities saw the beautiful treasures stay in Egypt. Mr Crowe told us that Howard Carter got no official recognition for the discovery he made, mainly down to the fact that he was apparently quite an awkward customer, and he died in early 1939 with only 9 people attending his funeral. This was a really lovely talk with some lovely slides of the treasures and the site where the tomb was found by Carter and Carnarvon. We all really enjoyed it and Mary Holland thanked Mr Crowe on behalf of us all. We all tucked into some delicious refreshments supplied by Mary Holland and Pat Baynham. The competition this month was “A favourite piece of Jewellery”. This was won by Gwyneth Lewis, second was Jane Cockburn and third was Mary Hall. Next month’s meeting is on Tuesday 12th April at the slightly later time of 7.30pm, and our speaker will be Ken Arch speaking about Hope House Hospice, a very worthy subject. Please do come and join us at our meetings we are always on the lookout for new members. If you would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me on 01584 841483 or email [email protected]. Jane Cockburn

Hayton & District WI - Litter Pick Some of the public spirited WI members who joined in “The Clean for the Queen” scheme on Saturday March 5th. The result was 24 sacks of rubbish, 1 Dyson Upright 1 child's bike, 3 tins of paint, 25 litre oil drum, all collected from the verges in and around Stanton Lacy and kindly taken to the Craven Arms dump by a willing (?) husband. Let’s hope the effort in clearing the road side will encourage the litter louts to take their rubbish home in future.

Hayton & District WI

Eileen Pritchard presided at the March meeting of Hayton and district WI which was held on 10th, she welcomed two guests. Gill thanked members who had helped at the annual snowdrop teas held in February at Stanton Lacy Church, £660 was raised for church funds. Members and neighbours were also thanked by Pam for their sterling efforts at the recent litter pick for the Queen, a total of 24 bags of litter, a Dyson vacuum cleaner, a child bike, a tyre and bucket were taken to the recycling centre. There were lots of interesting events noted in the monthly newsletter from Shropshire Federation including a chance to go to Ladies Night at Chester Race Course, Silk Painting Workshop and a guided tour of Macclesfield Silk Museum entitled Silk Worms to Cami-knickers! Rose reminded us of the outing to the Hockey Stick at Leominster for bowling and steak in April. The speaker, Sylvia Barrett, was introduced by Eileen. Her interesting illustrated talk was entitled Edward and Mrs Simpson. Sylvia explained her interest started as a child when she visited Fort Belvedere, a onetime home of Edward. She explained that Wallace Simpson had tried to prevent Edward from abdicating, however, despite the government offering a morganatic marriage, Edward abdicated. Her illustrations showed a very stylish Wallace who Edward seemed to be besotted by. After their marriage they lived at Le Moulin in France. Sylvia was thanked by Gill. Competition winners were: Flower of the Month – 1st Iris – Sue Parker, 2nd Hellebore – Joyce Randle, 3rd Hellebore – Barbara Scowern. Corvedale Book Group - March 2016

The March book Anna of the Five Towns by Arnold Bennett prompted a lively discussion in our group. Everyone had enjoyed it and found many themes to talk about. Published in 1902, the book remains very topical today. Anna, who is about to come of age at the beginning of the book, lives with her father and sister, for whom she keeps house in the Potteries on a sovereign a week. Her father is a cautious man who has invested his money wisely. He cares for his daughters but shows them little affection and allows them little leeway. Anna is amazed to find she has come into a large amount of money on her majority and has to learn to manage it. Her father arranges for her to become a business partner to Henry Mynors, a successful business man in his 30’s. The development of this partnership and their relationship occurs against the background of Wesleyan Methodism with frequent attendance at Sunday chapel, prayer meetings and a revival. Anna begins to ‘come out’ into society and joins a ladies sewing group and is invited to go the Isle of Wight for her first ever holiday, a trip by train and boat. Cared for by Mr and Mrs Sutton, a family of some social standing, she becomes friends with their daughter Beatrice. Despite her inheritance she has to ask her father for money for new clothes for the trip. Collecting rents and seeing the impact of demanding her money when it is due causes Anna some concerns, and she shows a different moral reaction to that of her father as she realises the impact of her demands on Willie Prince and his father who

are struggling to make ends meet. The relationship between Anna and her father provoked much discussion in our group. Anna’s privileged position as a woman of means, able to make her own decisions, was unusual for her time, but the issues raised by the book felt very contemporary. How she became engaged and what she might gain and lose by her marriage also raised issues. Arnold Bennett’s clear observation and vivid descriptions of provincial Victorian life made the characters and their environment very visual. We would recommend the book to you. We meet again on Thursday 14th April at the Swan at Aston Munslow at 7 30 to read A month in the country by J L Carr. The book is set in 1920. Tom Birkin seeks refuge in a medieval church in Oxgodby as he comes to terms with the aftermath of the first world war and uncovers a huge medieval wall painting. If you would like to join us there are a few copies still available to borrow. [email protected]. 07746647737

Corvedale Garden Group Report - Feb 2016

The first meeting of the year was at Beambridge Club Room on a cold but sunny morning. We were treated to the expertise of Anne Moore, one of our regular participants who is an enthusiastic collector of seeds. Anne, who rarely buys seeds, shared some really useful tips on growing plants from seeds, plants in fact for free. She told us about stratification and conditions needed for seeds to germinate. We heard that germination requirements vary, that some seeds can lie dormant for a year or more and that some need to be sown fresh. Whatever the seed type, Anne encouraged us to have a go and see what works. We discussed our own experiences of growing from seed and how satisfying it can be. We also talked about the best medium for sowing in. Anne uses a mixture of different types of compost including home made compost with vermiculite to help retain moisture. Some of us reflected on our own habit of over watering! Anne always uses tap water for seeds and seedlings to help prevent contamination. Anne recommended a book by Geoff Bryant called “Plant Propagation A to Z” which is apparently available from a well known online retailer for around 50p! The Hardy Plant Society is also a good source of information and seed. The sun was still shining as we thanked Anne and left, inspired to get sowing. The programme for the year is now complete and promises some really interesting visits. The first visit is on Saturday March 20th at 10.00am to Hillview Hardy Plants in Bridgnorth to visit the nursery and to hear a talk on spring flowering perennials from two of the team at Hillview, Ingrid and Sarah Millington. On April 16th we visit Abernant to see their cherry blossom and magnolias. We would be very happy to welcome anyone interested to join us for these visits or any later visits. If you would like to come along or would like more information please contact Cath Burley on 07746 647737. Elaine Gardner

Corvedale Garden Group Report - March 2016

The Parish Magazine was due to go to press we a few days before the first Garden Group visit of the year. Having changed our date to the third Saturday to make it easier for people to attend and to avoid clashes with shows and local events, we will now be running ‘behind’ publication dates. However we have a full programme planned for the year and I am happy to

forward anyone the pdf of the programme or a printed version if they contact me with their details. ([email protected] 01584861446). The first meeting of the year on Saturday 20th February was at Beambridge where Anne Moore provided a fascinating talk on sowing seeds and propagation. Thank you Anne. Some seeds need to go in the freezer before germinating, some need to be soaked, some, like South African fynbos plants need smoke from what we would know as ‘swaling’. Getting your timing and compost right is also important. For me the problem is not sowing but pricking out as I am not gifted with the skills required for nurturing plants at this stage. Today I am waiting for a friend to help me propagate some heucheras again, which she did very successfully last year. Ours are looking straggly and leggy, so we are hoping for a better display later in the year after her efforts. Happily, the editors have kindly allowed me to write in after our visit to Hillview Hardy Plants at Worfield on Saturday 19th March. Last year we began with a fascinating talk from Sarah Millington on Acanthus (bear’s britches). This year, we went to the nursery to see their new developments and have a talk from her mother Ingrid on Spring Flowering Perennials. (If you missed this talk the nursery will be doing 2 further talks for the RHS later in the year, see their website for details www.hillviewhardyplants.com). Ingrid and Sarah Millington made us very welcome with a warming cup of coffee as we arrived at Worfield. We settled to view an excellent slide show on Spring Flowering Perennials. Ingrid described a wide range of plants and bulbs which would flower from January onwards, starting with the more well known snowdrops, cyclamen coum, aconites and iris reticulata. Plants varied extensively in size, colour and form. Some were scented, others had bright leaves for both spring and autumn, and others disappeared soon after flowering until the following spring. A selection were quite unexpected – e.g. the suggestion of planting mandrake (mandraga officinadum) for its flowers, leaves and bright red pepper type fruits or the aubergine/purple North American scopolia carniolica or white flowered/red berried maianthemum racemosum. Further ‘blue’ suggestions to consider might be aubrietia delatoides, veronica gentionoides Blue streak; syphohytum caucasicum or convallaria Goldrush, epimedium x perralchium Frohnleiten, uvalaria perfoliata Merry Bells would be good for other areas. We then went to view many of the plants in the polytunnels before reconvening for coffee and a choice of cake while we paid for our purposes. The extensive range of plants make the nursery well worth a second visit later in the season. A further suggestion

made by Anne Moore for your diary would be the Shropshire Hardy Plant Society Spring Plant Fair on Sunday 10th April from 13.00-16.00 at Bicton Village Hall, Shrewsbury. For next month’s visit you would be welcome to join us at 10 a.m. at John and Betty Gleave’s garden at Abernant (SY156RZ) on Saturday 16th April to view their cherry and magnolia blossom. Entry is £6 including refreshments. Please contact me if you would like to share a lift with a member of the group. Also a couple of reminders – gardens will open this coming weekend under the Yellow Book scheme so there are plenty of local gardens to view. Mynd Hardy Plants in Diddlebury reopens after the winter and is the most local garden centre for us all to visit and enjoy the walled garden. An advance date for your diaries, on the weekend of 18/19 June The Cottage Herbery near Tenbury (WR15 8LT) has an open weekend to display their new garden and to celebrate their 40th anniversary.
