Small Church Community

Pentecost Sunday is your chance to get connected in a Small Church Community! A Small Church Community is simply a small group of people who gather regularly to read bits of Scripture, express their faith and grow in friendship. We want to help you get started—all you need is a desire to join others in growing together in relationship with God. Here is what a few of our parishioners have said about being in a Small Church Community: “I thank God every day for my group; it has brought God deeper into my life.” “(I) Think about how close our SCC has brought us to each other – and through that, to the Church.” “I know I’m going to have time to talk about God.” “I started out with 8 other people I barely knew. Now, they are my extended family. The bond is powerful.” “My SCC breaks open the Word of God each Wednesday. I have such a better understanding of Scripture when we read and discuss it together!" Plan to stop by one of our tables next weekend and receive infor-mation about how you, too, can participate in a small group. See you next weekend!

The St Louis Review dated May 4-10 highlighted the work of Assumption parishioner, Mary Ann Huber. Mary Ann is a founder of a senior care facility here in O’Fallon. Mary Ann stated the her “passion as a caregiver draws in-spiration from the Blessed Mother.” “The Blessed Mother has always had a very strong impact on my life. I think it’s like when you go to your mom and you ask for something. I ask Mary to give me the strength, give me the wis-dom, give me the know-how to do all I need to do.” The entire article can be accessed at: www.stlreview.com .

Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.” – 1 John 4:15 How strong is your faith? When you have an opportunity to defend your faith or clarify a question about your faith, do you do it? Or, do you re-main silent so that others don’t think you are weird? Pray for the courage to be strong in your faith and share your witness with others.

Ministry Reflections Eucharist is Our Blessing I love the privilege of being a Eucharistic Minister at my parish, Assumption in O Fallon. As I stand before the line approaching for Eucharist I often wonder about the stories held by the many individuals. I consider how each one of us is blessed and broken. We really have no idea of the stories that could be told.

It’s important to connect by meeting the eyes of the indi-vidual as Eucharist is offered. Often a smile is returned. I sense such a gentle presence in this short exchange. We stand as a Church Community. We are the Mystical Body of Christ.

This past Sunday, I was again standing as a Eucharistic Minister. You get to recognize individuals coming for-ward. I love when parents bring their children with them. In a gentle touch, a blessing is offered the young ones. So, as I’m offering Eucharist to the Moth-er, very quickly her little on is reaching over into the dish to help himself. The Mother quickly averted this potential First Communion. The Mother and I looked at each other in delight and squelched a gig-gle. Yes, we are all the Body of Christ. Kathy Buchheit, FSM

Earthquake Devastation in Nepal Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and Caritas are on the ground responding to the earthquake in Nepal that has left nearly 5,000 dead and thousands more injured. CRS’s initial goal is to help 10,000 families with emergency shelter, blankets, water treatment kits, and hygiene kits. Given the scale of the disaster, the number receiving help is expected to rise as our staff and partners are able to bet-ter assess the situation, coordinate our response with other agencies and procure additional supplies. CRS has made an initial commitment of $825,000 to relief efforts in Ne-pal, a figure that is expected to rise as the needs become clearer. If you would like to donate, please go to www.crs.org or send your do-nation to 228 W Lexington St, Balti-more, MD 21201-3443.

A Note From Father Mitch Next Monday, May 25, we pause to remember all the men and women who have served in our armed forces, especially those who have given their lives in service to our country. This Memorial Day, I encourage us to re-member well. As a people of faith, we pause to remem-ber the fallen so we can become ever more committed to making peace in our troubled world. Here we will begin our Memorial Day Observance with Eucharist celebrated at 8:00 am, where we remember Christ’s death and res-urrection. Jesus’ death on the cross is the end of death; his crucifixion is the end of killing; our communion is testimony to our longing for everlasting life for all God’s children.

During mass we will remember all men and women who have served or currently served. We encourage you to bring pictures of your loved ones who have served in any branch of our armed services. We will create a book of remembrance to be placed on permanent display in our Parish Center. We will also pray publicly for each of them at the beginning of mass. Near the end of mass we will process out to the cemetery where we will honor all our parishioners who have served and are buried here. We will pledge ourselves to honor their legacy by work-ing for peace. The final blessing, ending our celebration of the Eucharist, will take place in the cemetery. Memorial Day now marks the beginning of summer, the day the pools open. Let us not forget its true purpose; we take a day to remember the fallen and to pray for peace. Please join us in Church this Memorial Day. I commend us all to our Blessed Mother, Mary.

All Are Invited To Wear Red On May 24 the church celebrates the great feast of Pente-cost! We celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit who em-powers us to live and love as Jesus, utilizing His very power in this world. The color for Pentecost is red and you will see the priests wear red vestments (this color is also used for feast days of apostles and of martyrs.) We invite everyone to wear read on May 24 if you can do that easily, as an outward sign of our inward openness to the Holy Spirit and belief in His power among us. Whether you are able to wear red or not, may people be able to see in our lives the very power of the Holy Spirit alive in our midst!

Our community garden on Hwy 79, one mile north of Hwy M or Main Street, was a success. Last year, our first year, there were six individuals and fami-lies from Assumption Par-

ish that planted gardens. They grew sweet corn, potatoes, okra, tomatoes, green beans, watermelon, cantaloupe, zucchini and cucumbers. Some of the food was shared with those in need. The garden is first for self, second for family and third for community. The garden has plenty of room for you to plant and grow. Come and grow. For more information contact Jerry 636.544.1505.

20th anniversary of the Deaths of Fr. John Burke and Fr. John Keane On May 8, 1995 Fr. John Burke died unexpectedly at St. Joseph Health Center in St Charles. He was leaving the hospital after a follow-up appointment for days earlier rotator cuff surgery. Fr. Burke had been the pastor of As-sumption for nearly nine years at the time of his death. Fr. Burke was known for his hearty laugh and his work on parish projects. He worked on many construction projects around the church, from building sidewalks to patching leaky roofs. He carried his shovels, hoes and other tools around in a vintage black Chrysler. He was described as devoted, fair and “a down-to earth guy” who “wouldn’t ask you to do anything that he wouldn’t do himself.” Fr. Burke is bur-ied in Assumption’s cemetery. Fr. John Keane was assigned as an associate pastor at As-sumption in November 1994. On May 16, 1995, just eight days after Fr. Burke’s death, Fr. Keane died from brain cancer. Fr. Keane was already scheduled to have surgery for the cancer on May 10 when Fr. Burke died. He sought to postpone the surgery so that he could attend

Father Burke’s funeral, but Archbishop Justin Rigali told him he must follow through with the operation. While only with the parish for a few months he made an impact with the school children. He taught religion classes and most days ate lunch with the kids. He attended their sporting events after school. Fr. Keane is buried at Resurrection Cemetery.

Assumption History The ‘history museum’ presented at the 10th Anniversary of the new church was enjoyed by long time and recent parishioners. There are plans to make a permanent dis-play of the parish’s historical items and documents in the parish center. The items displayed at the anniversary were found in storage on the parish property. We heard from many parishioners at the ‘museum’ who said they or a relative had parish historical items at their homes. Do you have any photos, movies, etc that you would like to donate to the permanent collection? Or perhaps you could loan your items to us to make copies. Please contact Janet Schwendemann at 636.240.3721 x 232 or by email [email protected] if you have something to donate.

Do You Go To Noon Mass? We are welcoming more parishioners to consider becom-ing Usher/Greeters. If you have felt welcomed into As-sumption, we invite you to become Welcomers. We will be holding a Power Training on May 31, immediately after Noon Mass. And a Power Training is exactly what it sounds like… a way to be trained in 15 minutes! We will gather your contact information, talk you through the essentials, and send you on your way with instructional handouts. No registration necessary… see you there!

News from Fr. Joe . . . Greetings, all! The Archbishop has chosen that my next assignment will be as pastor of Sacred Heart in Eureka. It will not be Assumption (no place ever could be) but – from every-thing I can see - it should be a great place, and it will be an honor to love and serve them. Everywhere I go I have been blessed to meet so many good and holy people, and I have no doubt but that I will again do so at Sacred Heart. The parish has about 1,400 households; a somewhat small school and PSR program; and is one of the few areas that is not in St. Charles County that seems to hold some growth potential. Earlier this week I met with Fr. Leo Spezia, the senior-associate there and he sure seemed like a nice guy to work with. Hopefully Big Al will be on his best behav-ior, at least at the start. (Fortunately, I seem to never have to worry about that with Annie.) On June 16 I will officially start my new assignment. Before then, I will be in and out, mostly tied up with writing and videotaping. Fortunately, I will be able to join you for festivities on the night of June 13. After that, from time to time, I still hope to visit Assumption for various events. You would, of course, always be welcome to join us at Sacred Heart for anything we have. I will have so much to learn ... but I already go there a much better person and priest because of my time with all of you. Please know that you will FOREVER be a part of who I am. Love, Fr. Joe

Come one - come all and make a differ-ence in the lives of our teens!!!
