A FEW WORDS FROM OUR NEW PRESIDENT

If you’re wondering why you have not heard the 'Newsline' programs on Sunday night, it is because there appeared to be a relationship to the repeater acting 'strange' and the Newsline program - perhaps the repeater got too hot? To avoid the possibility of initiating a repeater problem while the repeater is inaccessable, I will suspend the program until accessibility to the repeater improves. Ah, another new year is upon us. Many folks use the start of a new year to make resolutions. First off, I would like to thank you all for believing in me enough to vote me in as President of your club.

Second, darn you for doing so; now I must get off my duff and figure out how to satisfy a group of people as diverse as our members. This will be my challenge for the new year. I will be challenging each of you to help meeting this objective. The common buzz-phrase is "It will be a win-win endeavor". There are many reasons to belong to this club. Some members are happy to just support the use of the club repeater by paying dues. Then there are those folks who attend meetings on a somewhat regular basis. Why do we do that? To socialize with others who share similar interests? To learn something new? To participate in club activities? What is it that draws you -- or would draw you -- to the meetings once a month? Would you like to participate in daytime activities, radio-related or not? Would you like to learn more about the technical side of amateur radio? Let's join together and make some 'resolutions' to start doing something challenging this year. Happy New Year! Dave - WD7K

Dave Klimas, WD7K

SO YOU MISSED THE LAST MEETING

Submitted by Peggy Gentle, KE6TIS, Secretary

Meeting called to order by President Wilse Morgan at 18:18 at the Ambulance shack in Colville

Present were President Wilse Morgan, WX7P, Vice-President Dave Klimas, WD7K, Treasurer Randy Jones, N7CKJ, and Secretary Peggy Gentle, KE65TIS. There was a quorum.

Bruce Fortune, KC7H, Chairman of the Board, read a proposal submitted to the board regarding proxy voting from Jason Marin, KE7TDY. He also read the paper with the board’s position on the matter. Because this proposal, if passed would change the

by-laws, there will be a vote in January at the regular meeting. The copies of both the proposal and the Board’s response will be mailed to members.

Other announcements: The Senate Bill S-1755 passed the Senate and is referred to the House Committee as Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Enhancement Act of 2009. RTTY roundup will be the 2nd and 3rd of January. Ric Tell, K5UJU, withdrew his name from the nomination for President.

Results of the election were as follows. Dave Klimas will become our President. Our Vice-President will be Jim Frees. Cynthia Frees, KE7ZDJ, will become Secretary. And, Randy Jones will continue as Treasurer. Bruce Fortune retains his position on the Board. The Ham of the year vote was taken, and will be announced in January at the club meeting.

After the potluck and gift exchange, Mike Hoteling, KD7IBE, won the HRO Raffle.

The meeting was adjourned without further business at 21:03.

Respectfully submitted,

Peggy Gentle

Brap…Brap…Brap DIGITAL RUMBLINGS FROM RURAL REPUBLIC

Submitted by Sholto Fisher, K7TMG and G7TMG Here in Republic I have now installed a 24/7 VHF Packet node and PBBS on 147.450MHz. I don't know whether anyone in Colville is still active in Packet Radio but they are welcome to use the PBBS for sending personal mail or bulletins. The node, which at the moment is a simple KA node, has a link to Omak (N7EBB-8) and from there you can work down to several Winlink 2000 RMS stations in Ephrata and Ellensburg. The TNC here is a dual port Kantronics and

should there be enough interest it would be possible to link to Colville on the other port. The radio is a Yaesu FT-2800M @ 10W to a Diamond X300A. To access the PBBS connect to K7TMG-1 To access the Node connect to REP There is no mail forwarding so messages and bulletins should be intended for local amateurs or those that can reach the PBBS via the Omak direction. Vry 73 and a Happy New Year! Sholto K7TMG (also G7TMG)

DEAN BODY, K7LAK, SK

Prepared by Randy Jones, N7CKJ Dean Body K7LAK passed away, suddenly, on December 26th. His memorial was held at the Kettle River Grange where he had spent many years participating in their annual play. Dean was so popular that the grange was filled to overflowing, literally! Many folks had to stand outside. Dean was so well respected that U.S. Senator Bob Morton officiated over the memorial. I can only touch briefly on Dean's contributions to the Panoramaland Amateur Radio Club as I had not had much contact with him in the past several years. Of course, Dean was a farmer as well as

having his own log truck and was active in his local fire district, so that didn't leave a lot of time for socializing, I assume. Dean Body was one of the PARC's few remaining "Founding Fathers". Like Bob Strauss K7JTR, Dean was present at that January 1960 meeting where the original club, the North East Washington Sevens, was formed. In fact, I had personally invited Dean to attend the upcoming 50th birthday celebration for the club. Hopefully he will be there in spirit. Dean served as Treasurer for the club in its early years from 1962 through, at least, 1966 when the positions of Secretary and Treasurer were combined into one. It appears that low club attendance necessitated the combining of offices, but Dean was certainly a regular attendee. In 1977, the Sheriff received a surplus rescue communications van in which Dean, along with Cleo Seimer, WB7OXT, Joe Gates, K7LHV, Ken Coulter, WA7FRO, and Bob Strauss worked to install the radio equipment. From 1978 up to around 1990, Dean was the main "go-to" guy for getting the clubs tower(s) up to the Radar Dome Field Day site and other locations. His pickup with the big "cattle cage" was a familiar site at those activities when Diane, KC7WQB, and I started with the club. His truck made him popular for hauling junk...I mean donated antique equipment, up from Spokane and other places.

PARC S-Meter Newsletter for January, 2010 Page 6 Dean's last position with the PARC was as Sergeant-at-Arms back in 1981, though due to a lack of records, he likely held other offices which I am not aware of. For the past several years, Dean Body K7 "Love Able King" (perhaps "loveable king"???) was known as a regular on the local 2 meter weather and Sunday night nets. These are the places where many of us will miss him the most. 73, Dean and have a safe journey.

So went the documentation of that very first meeting…50 years ago!

This was the beginning of a club which, some 50 years later, still thrives and serves the communities of Stevens and surrounding counties. Back then, it is likely that many of these folks never imagined that the club they started, that cold January evening, would still be around today.

Although many of the original 18 organizers of the Panoramaland Amateur Radio Club (the North East Washington Sevens, back then) are gone, their spirit lives on in our membership, today. The desire to "enhance and enrich the art and science of amateur radio", "facilitate the exchange of information and general cooperation between its members", "provide communication and support for public service events", "promote radio knowledge, fraternalism and individual operating proficiency" and "advance the general interest and welfare of amateur radio in the general community" has never been stronger than it is today. We have a great deal to be proud of!

With that, I invite you to join me in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Panoramaland Amateur Radio Club. This celebration will take place in the same month (50 years later) as did that initial gathering, so long ago. This time, however, you and I will be looking forward to the next 50 years of our spendid organization.

73 and see you all there! Randy Jones N7CKJ, PARC Treasurer, K7JAR Trustee

HAMS APLENTY – RECENT TESTING Who says the boss can’t influence things? Willow Calacino, left, is now sporting the new call sign, KF7GUA, office manager for Bruce Fortune, KC7H. Willow took and passed her Tech class license exam in December. Debbie Drake, who so competently arranged the club Christmas party,

snaged her Tech ticket and is now KF7GUB. Debbie is also the mom of Alberto, KE7QOK. What a great job Debbie did in finding a great location and arranging for our party this year! Great initiative. Some think that this is the kind of thing our new president is talking about.

A HAM OFFERING A HELPING HAND

Three days before Christmas, over in Curlew, a fire destroyed the homes of sixteen families living in apartments at an old converted school. Three died as a result of the fire, another is in a burn treatment center, one is in a hospital and everyone involved is without a place to live. Fellow ham and musician, Edison Shaw, N7GCW, in Republic, is planning a benefit concert for the victims of the fire and is soliciting donations to the families of this tragedy. Edison has put up a website where you can learn more about what happened and what he is planning to do to help. Edison is seeking all the support he can muster from both the ham community as well as everyone else. Please visit Edison’s website at: http://www.mycampage.com/rosevalleycam This

is a real world example of a ham helping his community. Let’s all pitch in and help. The fire began sometime after 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 22.
