Our family is our little worldthe place where we feel at home. It is the environment where we first feel loved and where we learn to love and care. Unfortunately, in our days, in far too many cases, the dream of a happy and faithful family has been shattered by selfishness, jealousy, pride, and irresponsibility. Many families in our society are a wreck. They exist only in the records of the parish or of the municipal hall and in the memories of years long gone by. Where there used to be kindness and trust, there now reign bit- terness and betrayal. Where sharing and love flourished, there is now selfishness or even hatred. Most situ- ations of these broken homes have reached a point of no return, with children born of illegalpartners, and unfaithfulness having become a way of life. The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph is for all families, the wonderful model they should try to imitate. Only then will the whole Christian community experience that wonderful revival that we all need so badly, and which can only be rooted in the Gospel values exemplified in the family of Nazareth. May the example of Mary Most Holy and Joseph and the teaching of St. Paul be our inspiration in making our families what we dream of and what God wants them to be. HOLY FAMILY, MODEL OF ALL FAMILIES

Our celebration of the Feast of the Holy Family re-proposes to all of us both the attractiveness of the dream of a united and happy family and the means to make it a reality by living out the message of God’s Word. Our family is our “little world” – the place where we feel at home. It is the environment where we first feel loved and where we learn to love and care. Unfortunately, in our days, in far too many cases, the dream of a happy and faithful family has been shattered by selfishness, jealousy, pride, and irresponsibility. Many families in our society are a wreck. They exist only in the records of the parish or of the municipal hall

and in the memories of years long gone by. Where there used to be kindness and trust, there now reign bit-terness and betrayal. Where sharing and love flourished, there is now selfishness or even hatred. Most situ-ations of these broken homes have reached a point of no return, with children born of “illegal” partners, and unfaithfulness having become a way of life. The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph is for all families, the wonderful model they should try to imitate. Only then will the whole Christian community experience that wonderful revival that we all need so badly, and which can only be rooted in the Gospel values exemplified in the family of Nazareth. BEQUEST/WILL TO OUR PARISH Think about it: Making a “Will or Be-quest” to our Holy Spirit Parish of City Beach can be enormously satisfy-ing. It provides a rare opportunity to review your life and to look at your most cherished relationships. The Catholic Church has been present at most of the important milestones in your life: your Baptism, your First Communion, at times of great celebration and at times of great sadness. The work of the many ministries of the Catholic Church is eve-ry day far-reaching, life-giving, and life-saving. By leaving a gift to your church in your Will, you will leave a legacy of faith – a legacy to help ensure that the mission and pastoral outreach that has been important to you will continue both for today’s needs and for those of our children, our grandchildren and beyond. Thank you!

MASS READINGS THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS,

MARY AND JOSEPH Yr B

1st-Reading (Gen 15:1-6, 21:1-3) Your heir shall be your own flesh and blood The word of the Lord was spoken to Abram in a vision, ‘Have no fear, Abram, I am your shield; your reward will be very great.’ ‘My Lord,’ Abram replied ‘what do you intend to give me? I go childless...’ Then Abram said, ‘See, you have given me no descendants; some man of my household will be my heir.’ And then this word of the Lord was spoken to him, ‘He shall not be your heir; your heir shall be of your own flesh and blood.’ Then taking him outside he said, ‘Look up to heaven and count the stars if you can. Such will be your descendants’ he told him. Abram put his faith in the Lord, who counted this as making him justified. The Lord dealt kindly with Sarah as he had said, and did what he had promised. So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the time God had promised. Abraham named the son born to him Isaac, the son to whom Sarah had given birth. THE WORD OF THE LORD!

Responsorial-Psalm [Ps 127:1-5] RESPONSE: Happy are those who fear the Lord and walk in his ways. 1. O blessed are those who fear the Lord and walk in his ways! By the labour of your hands you shall eat. You will be happy and prosper. R/ 2. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine in the heart of your house; your children like shoots of the olive, around your table. R/ 3. Indeed thus shall be blessed the man who fears the Lord. May the Lord bless you from Zion all the days of your life! R/

2nd-Reading (Col 3:12-21) Family life in the Lord You are God’s chosen race, his saints; he loves you, and you should be clothed in sincere compassion, in kindness and humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with one another; forgive each other as soon as a quarrel begins. The Lord has forgiven you; now you must do the same. Over all these clothes, to keep them together and complete them, put on love. And may the peace of Christ reign in your hearts, because it is for this that you were called together as parts of one body. Always be thankful. Gospel-Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! In the past God spoke to our fathers through the prophets; now he speaks to us through his Son. Alleluia!

Gospel (Luke 2:22-40) My eyes have seen your salvation When the day came for them to be purified as laid down by the Law of Moses, the parents of Jesus took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, – observing what stands written in the Law of the Lord: Every first-born male must be consecrated to the Lord – and also to offer in sacrifice, in accordance with what is said in the Law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons. Now in Jerusalem there was a man named Simeon. He was an upright and devout man; he looked forward to Israel’s comforting and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death until he had set eyes on the Christ of the Lord. Prompted by the Spirit he came to the Temple and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the Law required, he took him into his arms and blessed God; and he said: ‘Now, Master, you can let your servant go in peace, just as you promised; because my eyes have seen the salvation which you have prepared for all the nations to see, a light to enlighten the pagans and the glory of your people Israel.’ As the child’s father and mother stood there wondering at the things that were being said about him, Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, ‘You see this child: he is destined for the fall and for the rising of many in Israel, destined to be a sign that is rejected – and a sword will pierce your own soul too – so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare.’ There was a prophetess also, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was well on in years. Her days of girlhood over, she had been married for seven years before becoming a widow. She was now eighty-four years old and never left the Temple, serving God night and day with fasting and prayer. She came by just at that moment and began to praise God; and she spoke of the child to all who looked forward to the deliverance of Jerusalem. When they had done everything the Law of the Lord required, they went back to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. Meanwhile the child grew to maturity, and he was filled with wisdom; and God’s favour was with him. THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD!

******************************************************************************* CHRISTMAS MESSAGES

ARCHBISHOP OF PERTH ....Whatever Christmas looks like this year, one thing remains con-stant. At the heart of Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Christ. As long as we remember this and focus on this, Christmas 2020 will be as significant and as joyful as it always is - and perhaps even more so because we might find ourselves less distracted by the superficial things of Christmas and more free to concentrate on the extraordinary love of God for us which Christmas reveals. 2000 years ago no one could have dreamt that God would be found in a newborn baby lying helplessly in a makeshift crib surrounded by poverty, uncertainty and danger. God is full of surprises and is often to be found in the most unlikely of places and situations. I hope we all find some time to sit quietly gazing at our Christmas crib at home or the Christmas crib in our church and reflect on the extraordinary wonder of God‘s love, tenderness and care for us. May that helpless baby lying in the man-ger prompt us to look for God even in the most unlikely places. God is waiting to be found somewhere along the journey of each day. My prayer for us all this Christmas is that the Lord will open our eyes to recognise him when he comes to us and open our hearts to welcome him with joy. I wish you all a very happy and holy Christ-mas. +Most Rev. Timothy Costelloe, SDB (Perth Archbishop)

****************************** PARISH FINANCE COMMITTTEE

The Parish Finance Committee would like to thank all parishioners for their financial support during this challenging year. May we all celebrate a Holy Christmas together, and together, look forward to better times next year. Wishing everyone Happy Christmas!

PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL It's hard to believe that it is already time to wish you a Merry Christ-mas and a Happy New Year. What a year it has been for us all here at Holy Spirit Church, City Beach. We have together gone through and survived the Covid-19 crisis. Our parish community has come to-gether to joyfully celebrate some wonderful Liturgies and moments. The Parish Council will work hard for the parish towards achieving it’s vision, purpose, values, objectives and key priorities for 2021 and beyond. Christmas offers us a chance to reflect back on 2020 and also for us to look forward to the coming year. It is also a time for us to send good wishes to those we care about. On behalf of all the Councillors of Holy Spirit Parish Council, I wish you all a Christmas that is Happy, Safe, Warm and Comfortable.

+Val Ricciardo (PPC Chairperson) ********************************

PERTH CATHOLIC MISSION All of us at the Perth Catholic Mission Office wish you a Holy Christmas and offer our gratitude for your prayers and generosity towards those in need despite the current economic challenges and worries about friends and family

in Australia and overseas. Your Mission donations strengthen God’s loving presence amidst the on-going global pandemic. At Christmas, we are reminded that this presence came in the form of a helpless infant born of refugee parents into the poverty of a manger - a scene of life, hope and peace replicated in poor communities in the devel-oping world where our missionaries work. Please remember them and those they serve in your Christmas prayers.
