SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE LexisNexis has filmed The Papers of Eleanor Roosevelt, 1945–1952, Part 3: 1950, from the holdings at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library in Hyde Park, New York. The majority of the correspondence relates to Eleanor Roosevelt’s involvement in drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In addition to documents relating to the declaration, Roosevelt received many letters from concerned citizens who felt she was an approachable public figure. Also contained in this collection are newspaper and magazine clippings, pictures, poems, and brochures covering almost every imaginable topic. The documents are organized alphabetically according to their main topic or principal correspondent. The result is over thirteen hundred folders in twenty rolls of microfilm. Correspondents include Dean Acheson, Helen Gahagan Douglas, Walter White, Felix Frankfurter, and multiple members of the Roosevelt family; but regular citizens authored the majority of documents. In the Principal Correspondents index, correspondents’ names appear only if they contributed a significant number of documents or letters. Many names that appear as folder titles are not included in the Principal Correspondents index. If a name is not found in the Principal Correspondents index, it is possible that it appears in the Subject Index. Eleanor Roosevelt’s service as a delegate to the United Nations caused many private citizens to associate her with the emerging interest in world peace and human rights. In addition to her work as a delegate, Roosevelt’s work on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights led many to believe that she was capable of influencing national and international policy. Many letters contain details of plans for world peace or of initiatives that the authors believe would lead to world peace. While naïve, many concepts were logical, including ideas for world governments and international armies to promote and maintain peace. Interspersed among the reasonable documents are examples of more fanciful ideas such as the need for a world calendar to ensure peace or the “Lovetomic Bomb” (Reel 9, Frame 0777). Given that the documents in this collection are from the late 1940s to early 1950s, it is no surprise that the cold war and communism are reoccurring themes. In many cases, letter writers called on Roosevelt to denounce the Communist sympathies of her famous associates, including Paul Robeson and Trygve Lie. Roosevelt received letters detailing multiple Communist plots to subjugate the United States and stories of complex conspiracy theories involving Communist plans. Looking through the lens of the twenty-first century it is easy to dismiss these letters, but when one considers the general mood of the nation during this period, the sincere concern of the average citizen becomes clear. In 1950, with the cold war underway, a new military conflict faced the U.S. government and people. In June of that year, the army of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) crossed the 38th parallel starting the Korean War. A new war threatened the fledgling United Nations by testing its ability to prevent conflict. Roosevelt, as one of the most famous faces of the United Nations, received a great deal of

vi

correspondence related to the new war and the UN’s plans to cease hostilities. In addition to fielding questions related to the impact of the Korean War, Roosevelt was often called to serve various nonprofit organizations in multiple capacities. To those composing a board of directors for almost any school, peace plan, or women’s organization, Roosevelt’s name rose to the top of the list. Her instinct was to lend her support to worthy organizations; however, she often found herself stretched too thin and repeatedly declined to join even the most prominent organizations. Since Roosevelt is assumed to be one of the principal correspondents in every folder, the guide writer has purposely omitted her name from the Principal Correspondents index. More on Eleanor Roosevelt can be found in the following collections from LexisNexis: The Papers of Eleanor Roosevelt, 1933–1945; The Papers of Eleanor Roosevelt, 1945–1952, Part 1: General Correspondence, 1945–1947; The Papers of Eleanor Roosevelt, 1945–1962, Part 1: United Nations Correspondence and Publications and Part 2: United Nations Human Rights Commission Correspondence and Publications; and Documentary History of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidency, Volume 20, Eleanor Roosevelt: The Role of the First Lady. Documents exploring women’s roles in politics may be found in Papers of the League of Women Voters, 1918–1974, and The National Woman’s Party Papers. Collections covering the cold war include Confidential U.S. State Department Files, Map Room Messages of President Truman (1945–1946), and President Harry S. Truman’s Office Files, 1945–1953.

SOURCE NOTE LexisNexis microfilmed this collection from the Eleanor Roosevelt Papers, Part II:

April 5, 1945–1964, General Correspondence File, 1945–1962, Series 1945–1952, in the custody of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library, Hyde Park, New York.

EDITORIAL NOTE This microform collection consists of a wide variety of correspondence received by

Eleanor Roosevelt during the post–White House years. The General Correspondence File consists primarily of incoming correspondence except for a small quantity of carbon copies of outgoing correspondence. In general, carbon copies were not kept for every typed outgoing letter nor were copies made of outgoing handwritten material. The General Correspondence File is subdivided into three chronological series: 1945–1952, 1953–1956, and 1957–1962. The file folders of correspondence in each series are arranged in alphabetical order, with the individual documents in chronological order within each folder.

LexisNexis has microfilmed all of the documents from 1950 within each alphabetically arranged folder in the 1945–1952 series as The Eleanor Roosevelt Papers from the FDR Library, General Correspondence, Part 3: 1950. A small number of documents outside 1950 have been microfilmed. These are primarily responses or follow-up letters to earlier correspondence and have been included in an effort to provide the researcher with a complete record on a specific topic or action.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS UPA would like to acknowledge the assistance and cooperation of the Franklin D.

Roosevelt Library in Hyde Park, New York. Raymond Teichman and his staff were most helpful and patient in providing the support necessary for completion of this microform. Their efforts are greatly appreciated.

leanor Roosevelt’s service as a delegate to the United Nations caused many private citizens to associate her with the emerging interest in world peace and human rights. Moreover, Roosevelt’s work on the Universal Declaration of

Human Rights led many to believe that she was capable of influencing national and international policy. Many letters in this collection contain details of plans for world peace or of initiatives that the authors believed would lead to world peace. While naïve, many concepts were logical, including ideas for world governments and international armies to promote and maintain peace. Interspersed among the reasonable documents, however, are examples of more fanciful ideas, such as the rather interesting idea one group had of setting off a “Lovetomic Bomb”:

“What is this, what are they saying? This is not a bomb of war but one of peace

—a Lovetomic Bomb!!” Given that the documents in this collection are from the late 1940s to early 1950s, it is no surprise that the cold war and communism are reoccurring themes.
