Whether you’ve been attending Faith Church for a long time or you are a first time visitor, THE PAPER is here to help! Being a part of this church family is a partnership in growth, so we encourage you to be involved in 3 ways:

1 / WORSHIP ON THE WEEKENDS

2 / CONNECT IN COMMUNITY

3 / SERVE OTHERS

Gather with others to listen to a message from God’s Word, sing, pray and lift up the name of Jesus. Attend a service at one of our campuses. Faith Kids (infants-5th grade) is a safe place where kids can worship Jesus at their level. Don’t miss the opportunity to gather with others and worship each week. Invite a friend.

Being a follower of Jesus was never meant to be done alone. Sole-ranger Christianity usually means discouragement and failure. God has provided a better way- Biblical community. Community keeps us encouraged, helps us build meaningful friendships, and most importantly, helps us grow as Christians. This can be through a Mini-Church, Bible Study or Serving Team. No matter what your age, God does not intend for you to walk through life alone. Be real. Be known.

Join a weekend Serving Team at one of our campuses, serve in your neighborhood or around the world! God has gifted each of us to do something special. Discover the joy of serving.

WHAT IS YOUR NAME?

Joshua, Nicole and our 17-year old son, Christian Williams

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

Highland, Indiana

HOW DID YOU FIRST GET CONNECTED TO FAITH CHURCH?

We were attending Dyer for about a month before the Faith Highland launch. We saw the announcements for Faith Highland, so we came to support the launch and our family has been here ever since.

WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN GOD DO AT FAITH CHURCH?

We have been excited to see the incredible growth that has taken place since day one and are thankful to be a part of it.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT THE WORSHIP SERVICES?

We enjoy the freedom we have in praise and worship and that we always feel challenged to apply the message to our daily lives.

WHERE DO YOU SERVE AT FAITH CHURCH?

MOPS, Worship vocals

HOW DO YOU CONNECT WITH OTHERS AT YOUR CAMPUS?

We have connected mostly by being involved in a mini church. Nicole attended Coffee Break Bible studies when our campus first began.

WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN GOD DO IN YOUR LIFE?

We never really understood the meaning of community as it pertained to a church family, but now that we have become more connected, we are beginning to feel more and more like a part of the church that we feel sure that God has sent us to.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO SHARE?

Our family’s prayer had been for some time that we could be involved in a church that reached out to the community that we lived in. We continue to be so thankful and blessed that our church and its leaders do their best to seek the Lord and His guidance for our family and yours.

Dyer Worship Center UpgradeFaith Church Dyer has finalized its upgrade of the Worship Center. Thanks to the Reach Project, through your generosity, we were able to upgrade this space to be warm, inviting, and improve our experience of worship in Dyer as well as the technology for videos to our sites.

Cedar Lake Grand OpeningFaith Church Cedar Lake will have an official Grand Opening for the community on Sunday, March 6. While our brothers and sisters in Cedar Lake have felt like the Israelites in their 8 year journey as a campus, they will finally land in a building that is permanent for their worship and community as a church! In addition, they will be kicking off their Reflectors ministry for special needs. Pray for the Cedar Lake campus as they continue to transition into this facility and new space and, most importantly, that people would come to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Your generosity in the Reach Project has been amazing and we continually thank and praise God for you. Join me in thankfulness to our Lord, he is ever faithful, ever generous!

WHAT’S REMARKABLE ABOUT

JOHN THE BAPTIST?BY: DR. BRIAN DENNERT

Page 11: The Paper | March/April Issue 2 Vol 3

“What kind of guy lives in the wilderness, eating locusts and honey and wearing camel hair?” This is a question people ask me when they find out that my doctoral research was on John the Baptist. While these details about John (see Matthew 3:4 and Mark 1:6) might seem odd to us, what I find remarkable about John is not his diet and dress but his approach to life, - he lived as one who did not seek attention on himself but directed people towards Jesus.

From his birth to his death, John pointed away from himself and to Jesus. His miraculous birth to aged parents, Zechariah and Elizabeth, brought them joy, but his father was told that John’s purpose in life was to get people ready for Jesus (see Luke 1:5-25 and 1:57-80). The whole point of his ministry was that God’s kingdom (and king) was coming soon (Matthew 3:2), with John’s work of baptizing with water prefiguring the work of God baptizing his people with the Holy Spirit and fire (Matthew 3:11-12). When the crowds around him started de-creasing, he didn’t care because he knew that Jesus, not he, was the hero of the story (see John 3:25-30). In fact, John encouraged his disciples to follow Jesus (John 1:35-47). Even John’s execution by the Roman-appointed ruler (see Mark 6:14-29) points to Jesus’ death with Jesus’ resurrection showing how he is greater and the promised one. John’s diet and dress were part of his work to prepare others for Jesus, showing him as one who lives in the wilderness (to fulfill the promise of Isaiah 40:3 as a voice preparing people for God) and protests the au-thorities because God would overthrow the current world system through Jesus.

John had a special calling as the “promised Elijah” who came before the arrival of God (Malachi 4:5-6, Matthew 11:14), but Jesus tells us that we are even greater than John (Matthew 11:11) because we experience the kingdom in a way he never could in light of Jesus’ ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension. Therefore, John’s example should challenge us -- not to eat and dress like him, but to have every detail of our lives be affected by Jesus and point to Him. We often live our lives as if we are the center of the universe, but what might it look like for you to live a life pointing others to the one who has come, Jesus Christ? How might you similarly decrease so that Jesus can increase (John 3:30)?

Page 12: The Paper | March/April Issue 2 Vol 3

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO CHANGE THE WORLD ONE RELATIONSHIP AT A TIME?

It means that God is calling us to restore the world one relationship at a time. We hired a branding company called “Cultivate,” and they took us through this incredibly intense examination of who we are as a church. What they found was that we have a clear vision, which is “to reach the disconnected and grow the connected,” but we need to get it down into people’s laps so that we can all own and share this vision together. It’s about communicating to each person in our church that God wants to use you, not just “the church” but each person, to restore the world one relationship at a time.

WHY IS EASTER AN IMPORTANT TIME FOR EVANGELISM?

The vast majority of the world is aware of Easter. It’s a main entry point for outreach. The Holy Spirit stirs people and two times a year there is a heightened awareness of God in the world: Christmas and Easter. The Holy Spirit is working ahead of and behind us. Easter is like the Christian Superbowl.

HOW HAVE YOU DONE PERSONAL INVITATIONS?

Every time Faith hands out invitation cards, I give them to my neighbors. Two of my neighbors come to the service when I do this. I’ll hand these cards out at restaurants and places I visit. At a restaurant, I’ll leave the card with the tip or personally hand it to them. Invite people at places where you have personal relationships like family, friends, coworkers, fellow students and neighbors because if you hand these cards out front at Walmart, there is a very small chance someone will come to the service.

WHERE ARE YOU IN RELATIONSHIP WITH PEOPLE THAT ARE NOT BELIEVERS; HOW DO YOU SHOW THEM THE LOVE OF CHRIST?

I used to be better at this. I would visit businesses in our church and connect with the employees who worked there. When my kids were younger and involved with sports,

INTERVIEW WITH PASTOR BOBBY: MARJORIE DEVRIES

Page 13: The Paper | March/April Issue 2 Vol 3

I would connect with the other parents. But my world has changed. I don’t have as much contact with the unchurched world like I used to. At 54 [years old], I have to be more intentional about reaching them.

I do go running in a group on Saturdays, and I also frequent coffee shops and restau-rants so I’m able to connect with the world in these ways now.

I connect with them through just loving them. My two words that I use are “lips and life.” I want to share with my lips and tell them about Jesus, and I want my life to speak and love on these people. So to show others the love of Christ, you want to say it and you want to live it.

WHAT ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT FOR THIS EASTER AT FAITH CHURCH?

Earlier this year, all eight pastors, worship leaders and some support staff went on a half-day retreat. We prayed, we worshipped, and we started planning really early. God showed up in great ways. It was exciting because everyone was on board and had great ideas for the Easter service.

Recently, there has been an increased sense of unity in all the campuses. Growing so fast with eight sites, it got a little confusing because it was so chaotic, but now that we have slowed down, we’re more unified as a team, and we all know that we’re doing this together.

I’m excited about the passage for this year’s Easter service. I don’t want to give it away because it’s a surprise, but it’s a unique passage and it excites us. There’s also going to be a cool video shown during the service, kind of from a different angle so that is exciting, too.

WHAT IS YOUR HEART ON EVANGELISM?

Part of Easter is believing that Jesus did rise from the dead. So many people get con-fused about what it means to be a Christian.

It’s not a myth. There was a man who rose from the dead. A real man named Jesus and we need to tell His story—that’s what evangelism is. Being a Christian is really believing it. The real belief that there was a man named Jesus who died and rose from the gtrave, and just like Jesus died and rose, we also will die and rise. We need to speak and witness to people and believe it ourselves.

EASTER LEAVES A SENSE OF URGENCY. THE REALITY OF HEAVEN AND HELL AND DYING WITHOUT KNOWING THE SAVIOR, THAT THERE WILL BE ETERNAL PUNISH-MENT.

People ask if they or someone they know has wandered away from the faith…are they still saved? I say yes. Anything short of that is against the will of God. People are always relieved when they hear this. Salvation is not based on you. God made a covenant with you that He will be your God, and His love is steadfast. You can try to run from God, but nothing can separate you from the love of God. Even though we wander away and shut God out, He is still with us.

T his past October, Faith Church Elder, Dr. Carl Toren, along with his son, Daniel, and Rev. Michael Amo-Adu (an RCA pastor from New York)

traveled to Ethiopia to meet with our brothers and sisters and continue to build relationships with our partners in Aira.

While there, Dr. Toren saw pediatric patients in the hospital and taught a course on Environmental Health in the nursing school. Daniel Toren helped with English lessons in the seminary and the local Christian high school and played soccer with the local kids (the common language among many internationals). Pastor Michael taught the

book of Galatians at Onesimus Nesib Seminary (ONS).

Many from Faith Church have sponsored pastors at ONS over the last 4 years so it was great to meet with those pastors as well as be introduced to the incoming class. Because of the generosity from Faith Church as well as family and friends, Carl was able to bring along 84 ESV study Bibles which were given to the upper-level seminary students. Because most of the pastors travel to far-reached places, these study Bibles often are literally the only resource they have in sermon prep so they will be used well! In addition to their work in the hospital and schools, the group was able to arrange for 10

AIRA TRIP RECAP

Page 17: The Paper | March/April Issue 2 Vol 3

spring protections. In many areas, we hear of the need to drill for clean water; in this region of Ethiopia, the water bubbles to the surface through natural springs and simply needs a clean, protected area for it to be utilized well for the local community.

The local Synod in Western Ethiopia continues to expand dramatically. Since Carl and Pastor Jason DeVries visited Aira in 2012, membership has grown by 60,000 now reaching 260,000 which is more than the entire RCA denomination. There are 233 congregations (22 have been added since 2012), and the number

of pastors has grown from 73 to 100, each serving 2-5 congregations. There is much to celebrate in Western Ethiopia, and Faith Church is excited to be a part of what God is doing there!

Coming up!The weekend of March 5/6, we will again have the opportunity to sponsor 20 pastors for the coming year as they work to complete their formal education at Onesimus Nesib Seminary (ONS). Leadership Development is undeniably the most strategic impact the North American church can bring to these far-reached regions, and Faith Church is excited to be involved in this way alongside ONS!

This past January a team from Faith spent a week serving alongside All God’s Children in Comayagua, Honduras. While there, the team was able to visit many of the ministries that are a part of All God’s Children including the Hogar (children’s Home), Misericordia (home for those with special needs), and Buen Pastor (home for young single mothers). While serving in these areas they were able to interact with the children, play games, lead VBS and crafts, as well as repaint some of the wall around the Hogar (Children’s Home). Way to go Faith Church!

W e are building momentum in our launch of a couple of small groups, with a serious approach in growing disciples - folks are engaged and

maturing in the faith. We are growing slowly but trust that the Lord will give the increase as we continue to pray and work hard! Our radio program is also picking up steam and hundreds of people are engaging with us on social media. The message is uploaded to SoundCloud and shared on both Facebook and our webpage. We have also promoted some ads on FB and thousands have been reached, and hundreds have indicated that they liked either the message or the invite.

We launched on Saturday, February 6, our street evangelism program entitled “Faith Moves Mountains.” We kicked off with a powerful message, music, one-on-one engagement with people all throughout the neighborhood, and follow-up. Faith Moves Mountains basically goes into a particular community to spread God’s love and invite residents to join us in a music celebration where we also share the Gospel and invite them to receive Jesus in their hearts. We had nearly 100 people come in and take a seat and about 22 people came forward and

FAITH SANTO DOMINGO UPDATE

accepted Jesus. While nearly 100 people came in and took a seat, hundreds passed by and stood listening on the outside perimeter of the parking lot where we were hosting the celebration. Many more were prayed for throughout the parking lot and outside as well.

The next “splashy” outreach event was on Feb 20 at a tennis club where 70-75 “ball boys” worked (ages range from 10-17). We had some snacks for these boys and distributed gifts in collaboration with Samaritan Purse DR volunteers. This kick-off event introduced the youth to an evangelistic program entitled “The Great Adventure,” which will continue for the next 12 Saturdays. We also be ministerd to the parents of these youth. We will continue on this missional path and constantly push this nascent faith community to reach out. Our children’s program (15 kids or so) is going really well and they are learning a lot. Our Children’s volunteers are truly talented and love the kids.

We are ‘hungry’ for people to come to Christ and to join our church, so we ask FC to cover us with prayers. We are asking God to bring in a strong harvest and for dozens of small groups to be formed and shaped in Christ-likeness!

F aith Church Hammond is excited about the move into our new worship venue at the HAC! Our Celebration Service setting is intentionally being set so we

can focus on building relationships and better engaging our community. We save over four hours of weekly set up and tear down for our worship service which helps us to better reach the disconnected and grow the connected as we refocus our priorities in community outreach and service. We have been so blessed as we seek to reach our diverse community in Hammond and the Calumet Region. We know that God will give us the grace to simplify and thrive in our new setting.

Our first meeting in our new home on February 7 was amazing! Offering two services at 9 and 11 has brought greater community with more flexibility for serving and being able to worship with others. Our Faith Kids ministry is enjoying their new space upstairs and the extra time they now have to build relationships with kids and families rather than spending so much time with set up and tear down. Our servant leaders are also excited because as one leader said, “Now I can come and worship at 9 before I serve with the kids at the 11 am service.”

Faith Church Hammond is anticipating our 5th Anniversary this spring. We have seen God do some amazing things over these years! We have enjoyed building relationships at Kenwood

FAITH CHURCHHAMMOND MOVESTO THE HAC!

Elementary with mentoring via Kids Hope and arts classes at the HAC and even at some of our public school campuses. It’s been a great way to have a visible presence in our community to let them know that we care about them. The HAC has been home to a Celebrate Recovery ministry for four years. It is beautiful to see God gathering and bringing healing and freedom to those dealing with their hurts, habits and hang-ups. One of the exciting things about this ministry is partnering with other believers in the greater Chicagoland area. The HAC has also been the home to our Men’s Ministry and Women’s Bible Studies over the years as well as various small groups and Faith Women’s Stitchers.

We are also grateful for the growing partnerships with other churches in the Hammond community. These partnerships have allowed us to experience the joys of co-laboring with other believers in our community. It has given us the opportunity to demonstrate to the region that our churches can unite to do good and be a blessing in our community.

We are still praying for and exploring options for our campus’ final location, but it seems God is calling us to partner with an existing church in Hammond that is in need of transitioning into a new and different vision for ministry.

We look forward to sharing more on this as it unfolds.

EMERGENCY CLOSING COMMUNICATIONS

If weather conditions are severe and require a worship service or services to be cancelled, we will use the following to notify people:

WGN Emergency Closing System | Faith Church website | Facebook/social media for the individual campus | Email distribution - via campus specific email list. Be sure to update your email for your campus.

To access WGN information, turn to WGN on the radio, TV, or go online to www.emergencyclosings.com to search for your campus by name and city or phone; or sign up for the ECC email to notify you of your

facility’s status.

Worship services will be held as much as is reasonably possible, but we want you to be aware of the policy in place to notify of any potential changes.
