Center Line High School Dear Families, We are pleased to report that our students are meeting the expectations of our community service initiative. This initiative is in place to extend learn- ing beyond the traditional classroom walls and connect with our community on meaningful levels. In October, our Community Service Class and Community Outreach Club helped advertise the CLPS coat drive at the high school which increased the amount of donations this year; our students also volunteered to work at the clothing drive. They also held a toiletries drive at CLHS for a local homeless shelter. They collected 14 shampoos and conditioners, 7 toothpaste tubes, 3 toothbrushes, 6 dental floss rolls, 22 bars of soap, 10 deodorants, and 3 lo- tions! Mrs. Cook and our students delivered the goods as well. Continuing with our service to the community, JROTC cadets mentored Cub Scout Troop 1708 (the “Wolf Cubs”) and taught them proper flag etiquette and procedures. The Cub Scouts enjoyed learning these skills and interact- ing with our JROTC cadets. For students in need of their required community service hours, the Arc of Macomb County (an organization that has been supporting persons with disabilities and their families since 1953) needs volunteers for their gift wrapping booth at the Macomb Mall from December 1 - 24. Shifts of 3-5 peo- ple usually last 3-4 hours; call Mrs. Laurie O’Meara at the Arc of Macomb County (586-469-1600) to sign-up. IMPORTANT DATES November Nov. 17 Band Booster Mtg. Dear Families,

We are pleased to report that our students are meeting the expectations of

our community service initiative. This initiative is in place to extend learn-

ing beyond the traditional classroom walls and connect with our community

on meaningful levels.

In October, our Community Service Class and Community Outreach Club

helped advertise the CLPS coat drive at the high school which increased the

amount of donations this year; our students also volunteered to work at the

clothing drive. They also held a toiletries drive at CLHS for a local homeless

shelter. They collected 14 shampoos and conditioners, 7 toothpaste tubes, 3

toothbrushes, 6 dental floss rolls, 22 bars of soap, 10 deodorants, and 3 lo-

tions! Mrs. Cook and our students delivered the goods as well.

Continuing with our service to the community, JROTC cadets mentored Cub

Scout Troop 1708 (the “Wolf Cubs”) and taught them proper flag etiquette

and procedures. The Cub Scouts enjoyed learning these skills and interact-

ing with our JROTC cadets.

For students in need of their required community service hours, the Arc of

Macomb County (an organization that has been supporting persons with

disabilities and their families since 1953) needs volunteers for their gift

wrapping booth at the Macomb Mall from December 1 - 24. Shifts of 3-5 peo-

ple usually last 3-4 hours; call Mrs. Laurie O’Meara at the Arc of Macomb

County (586-469-1600) to sign-up.

The firefighting class has been working hard to give back

to our community. They decided to do what firefighters

do best- save lives and protect property! Our students are

installing brand new smoke detectors (graciously donat-

ed by Home Depot) in Center Line residents’ homes. Go-

ing door to door this past month, flyers were passed out

to let homeowners know the class would be by on Novem-

ber 7th, should they need a new smoke detector. For resi-

dents who already have a working smoke detector, re-

placement batteries are offered focusing on the elderly

and handicapped that may have trouble climbing a lad-

der. Our students partnered with Center Line Police De-

partment and Center Line Firefighters, who went to door

to door with our students to ensure safety. We have also

been learning the basic fundamentals of search and res-

cue in a smoke filled home. We have a simulated house

that fills with smoke in which students must crawl

through to find their victim and drag them to safety. The

class has taken turns volunteering at public safety

events demonstrating to children how to get out of a

burning house.

CLHS Firefighting Students Serve the Community

As our EMT students prepare for clinical rotations at our local emergency departments and ambu-

lance companies to gain field experience through one on one patient contact, we have been spending

a lot of time learning hands on skills. After countless hours of practice and studying, our students

have earned their Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certifications through the American

Heart Association. They have also learned how to secure an airway during emergency situations

using both a combi-tube and the KING airway device

which allow ventilations to be given to patients not

breathing on their own. Finally, we have been honing

our skills on one of the most common and critical as-

sessments in pre-hospital care, vital signs. By the end

of this month, our students will be experts at taking

blood pressures, pulses and respirations. All of their

hard work has been paying off and they were treated

to a day of fun! We spent the day before Halloween

showing the students how to make fake (yet realistic)

wounds using clay, wax and paint. It was a learning

experience enjoyed by all!

The Center Line High School Marching Band has had a very successful fall season. Our students

began rehearsing in July with a two week band camp. In addition to their summer practices, each

summer the band is asked to perform for the residents at the Father Murray Nursing Center Sum-

mer Fair. This performance allowed our band to prepare for their upcoming season, provide enter-

tainment for the residents and staff, and acquire community service hours.

In addition to performances at our home football games, they also participated in the Harper Woods

Band O Rama, and the MSBOA Marching Band Festival, held at Mott High School. There they per-

formed their best show of the season, earning a Division I rating and high praise from all the judg-

es!

Our theme this year was "The Blues Brothers" featuring great rhythm and blues songs from artists

like Aretha Franklin and Cab Calloway. The band performed I Can't Turn You Loose, Soul Man,

Rawhide, Peter Gunn, Minnie the Moocher, and Think.
