THE PANDA NEWS A Note from the Principal The 2015-2016 school year is well underway and our students have been busy with their classroom work and school activities. We truly appreciate the opportunity to work with your children each and every day. We have a number of new staff who have come to Pasadena this year and it is always great to see how welcoming and supportive our community is. One of Pasadena’s strengths is our staff’s desire for the very best for each of our students. Our new staff members share this commitment as well. We are glad to have them on our team. We have a number of school wide initiatives you will be hearing about over the coming year. Several are highlighted below and / or in the newsletter. We are implementing a program called Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). PBIS is a program focused on teaching appropriate behavior to all children and focusing on positive inter- ventions early to reinforce those expectations. We introduced the Kelso’s Choice Wheel, as a tool school-wide, to assist students in solving “small” problems on their own or with the assistance of an adult. We will expand Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education opportunities for all of our students, as one of our School Improvement Planning initiatives for the year. We will focus on increasing STEM education as a part of our school day, and through extra-curricular activities during the spring and summer. It has been a busy fall for our PTO. They have been actively involved supporting our students and fami- lies with several events and fundraisers. I am so impressed with the number of parent volunteers in the building on a daily basis. We have a great school community and I am always thankful for the support demonstrated by all of you who have participated in various ways. A few of the highlights: Valley Fest Parade • Donuts with Dads • Muffins with Moms • Grandparents Breakfast • Scholastic Book Fair • Fall Festival • Charleston Wrap fundraiser Please take time to visit our new web page. The content continues to grow as a resource for our stu- dents, parents, and staff. In the weeks ahead, look for a Parent Survey link on the WEB page, and via e- mail, for us to gather your input on a number of topics. A Note from the Principal

The 2015-2016 school year is well underway and our students have been busy with their classroom work and school activities.

Transportation Tidbits….

Transportation changes: Please send a

note to school with your child, or call into

the office in the morning. Changes close to

dismissal time can be tricky and cause con-

fusion for the students. We ask that com-

munication please come prior to 2:00 p.m.

—unless is it an emergency situation.

Student Pick-up: The after school pick-up

area is at the West end of the building un-

der the Gymnasium sign. Teachers escort

the students to either the bus area or the

pick-up area. Please pick your student up at

the designated area.

What a great start to the school year! Mrs. Shipton and I are excited to be back as your counseling team. We are once again teaching weekly Panda Pride lessons in every classroom. So far, we’ve covered topics such as Problem Solving (using Kel-so’s Wheel), Respect, Empathy, and the character trait for October, Responsibility. For Responsibility, we talked to students about the importance of doing what’s ex-pected and owning up to mistakes.

Both the ASB and Leadership are up and running. ASB organized the first school-wide Spirit Day of the year on October 2nd. Students had fun wearing their favorite pajamas. Leadership Group has been helping out at recess and will be taking part in Pennies for Patients after Winter Break. Pennies for Patients supports the Leuke-mia and Lymphoma Society.

It continues to be a privilege to work at such a wonderful school. We appreciate all the parent support! Please feel free to contact us this year with any questions or concerns.

CORN HUSKING!

The 4th & 5th graders participated in the Food Sense Corn Husking Project in

September. Thanks to WSU Food$ense, Links Co-op, and the 4th & 5th grader’s

hard work, the school Cafeteria enjoyed the freshly picked and prepared corn!

Pasadena Park is in the middle of implementing PBIS, Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports. PBIS is a multi-tiered framework for improving school climate and student

behavior. The framework is first and foremost a positive and proactive approach. So far, we’ve worked on schoolwide things, such as clearly teaching routines and expected

behaviors, rewarding positive behaviors, and learning how to solve conflicts. Speaking of solving conflicts, all students have now learned about Kelso’s Wheel for solving “small”

problems. Please see below for the wheel.

We encourage you to cut it out and use it at home too!

Here at Pasadena Park, we believe strongly in supporting, informing, and communicating with parents. In this section, we’ll keep you updated as we continue to make this great

school even better. Thanks for your support!

Your PBIS Leadership Team
