The PA President’s Corner… Angie Williams Fall 2013

As the temperature drops, the colors of the leaves begin to change and R-MA Cadets become more polished at formation, that can only mean one thing…Homecoming Weekend! We are so very excited to welcome parents, family and alumni to our

beautiful campus for another fun-filled weekend. If you are an R-MA par-ent, returning or new, and would like to show your Yellow Jacket pride, then contact us…we would love to meet you and have your help!

HomecomingHomecoming weekend is here!! October 11-13, with many activities planned. You can find the event list for alumni online at http://www.rma.edu/Homecoming

Our students will be heavily involved in many of the activities over the weekend, and will be putting on quite a performance for the Memorial Ceremony and the Parade. Don’t worry though, they get to have fun this weekend too! Here are a couple of the planned events for:

At 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 11, the Student Life Committee is host-ing the entire R-MA community at the practice football field for the annual bonfire with s’mores. R-MA Parents’ Association in Action

Soon R-MA cadets will be walking in style, on new floor-ing! Thanks to the Parents’ Association, $5,000 has been designated to replace the industrial tile in the Stu-dent Services Lounge. A modern, sleek, wood-look vinyl will flank the original black and white tiles for a compli-mentary update. Thanks to those volunteer parents who worked hard to raise these funds through concessions, uniform sales and all of the wonderful donations! So far, the Upper and Middle School Score Boards were the previously donated high dollar items.

I Wish...I Wish...

Thank you to our generous R-MA parents for helping to fulfill our Wish List. These items, large and small, go a long way in helping our students and staff. Concessions are such a big fundraiser for us, and the proceeds go directly to the students…a Win/Win!

The Wish List items still needed:

18 qt roast ovenProctor Silex electric kettle 1.7 LiterHamilton Beach 42-cup coffee maker2 qt pump thermos

*Glass front bever-age refrigeratorThis is a much-need-ed item to keep our drinks cold for our concession stands! If you are a business owner and can help us with a vendor con-nection, please let us know.

If you would like to donate or volunteer,

please contact PA President

Angie Williams at [email protected]

or her work phone at 540-636-4444.

PA Gets a Presidential VisitOur Parents’ Association was honored to have R-MA President Maj Gen Maury Forsyth speak during the Sep-tember meeting. Gen Forsyth presented current enroll-ment statistics and his goals for R-MA. He introduced his vision for student enrollment and intent to lead the school to a higher level of student expansion and academic achievements. Also Gen Forsyth listened to suggestions from parents regarding better R-MA-to-parent commu-nication, the creation of an online database for volunteer needs and supplies, as well as carpool opportunities/connections.

New Faces, New PlacesAs new Cadets enter the halls and classrooms of Ran-dolph-Macon Academy, many parents are feeling the stress of the first month. Uniforms, schedules, books…it can all be overwhelming for parents and students. Take a deep breath because you are not alone. My name is Jennifer (Jen) Kelly, and I am a new R-MA parent. Like many R-MA students, our son has always had the desire to learn to fly planes and to one day attend a Service Academy. We relocated the family to Front Royal, and Cadet Kelly is now a Day Student. The PA Sept meeting brought in new faces, like me, who were invited to jump into the many opportunities, to get involved and express opinions. If you have been thinking of getting more active in R-MA life, there is no time like the present!

PA Supports the Arts

Last year’s production of the R-MA's Little Theatre, which is housed in the lower level of Melton Gymnasium, brought Mulan to the mountains of Virginia. The PA stepped in and donated $1,000 to the production and collected donations at the performances.

This year’s production of Grease is in full swing and Ms. Cramer needs your help! Specifically, the Little Theatre is in need of the following props and costume pieces (to donate or lend):

7 men's black leather jacketsPoodle skirtsPencil skirtsbutton down sweaterswide belts50's chiffon scarfs50's style prom dressesBow ties50's style radioPortable record playermen's button down shirtsargyle sweaters

Donations to help with the purchase of costumes and set materials would always be greatly appreciated. Also, specifically talent-ed individuals to help with costume fittings, organization, and alterations please contact Mrs. Kim Cramer @ [email protected].

Mulan was a great success last year in large part to the support of the Parents’ Association and individual parents.
