DON’S FISH FRY—ARE YOU
READY FOR SOME CATFISH? Make your plans now! Don’s Fish Fry will be held on Saturday, September 15th. between the hours of 4 and 7PM. We will be serving delicious deep fried catfish nuggets, golden buttered corn on the cob, hot green beans, ice cold coleslaw, world famous hush puppies, chicken nuggets, dessert, and a drink. The cost is $10 per plate for adults and $5 per plate for
children 8 and under. Tickets may be purchased from members of Grace Church or from the Parish Office. Help is needed selling tickets and working during the event. A sign-up sheet for workers is now located in the Narthex. Time for Fish, Fun, and Fellowship!
PAINTING WITH HEATHER
Heather Roy will be offering a painting workshop Saturdays in October. The dates are October 6, 13, and 20, from 9 AM until noon. If you have a painting you would like to do for yourself, a painting you may need to finish, or just want to learn to paint, this workshop is for you. This class is for all levels of painters. Be sure to get with Heather (409-771-6991) on your project before September 29 so that all supplies will be available. Total cost including all supplies is $75 payable to Grace Church. A sign-up sheet will be posted on the Parish Hall bulletin board. There will be a class limit of 10, so sign up early!

Dear Grace,The last few weeks I have received many questions about the role of the deacon. Questions such as “what is the difference between a deacon and a priest?”, “why do you wear your stole to the side?” and “when can you celebrate the Eucharist?” have all been asked. During the time of being a deacon, it is my desire to live into the role of a deacon. A deacon’s primary role is one of service. A primary role for a deacon is to be the mouthpiece of God between the church and the world. A deacon is to be outside the walls of the church, helping to meet needs, helping the poor and disadvantaged as well as helping to assist the priest in liturgy. Each day I recall the words I promised my Bishop at the ordination service for a deacon (June 23rd, 2018, St John the Divine Episcopal Church), and especially the charges in the examination:
“My brothers and my sisters, every Christian is called to follow Jesus Christ, serving God the Father, through the power of the Holy Spirit. God now calls you to a special ministry of servanthood directly under your bishop. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are to serve all people, particularly the poor, the weak, the sick and the lonely. As a deacon in the church, you are to study the Holy Scriptures, to seek nourishment from them, and to model your life upon them. You are to make Christ and his redemptive love known, by your word and example, to those among whom you live, and work and worship. You are to interpret to the Church the needs, concerns, and hopes of the world. You are to assist the bishop and priests in public worship and in the ministration of God’s Word and Sacraments, and you are to carry out other duties assigned to you from time to time. At all times, your life and teaching are to show Christ’s people that in serving the helpless they are serving Christ himself.”
In this diocese, I was ordained to the transitional diaconate, which means I will serve in the role as deacon for 6 months before ordination to the priest-hood which will be in either December or January. The ordination date is set by the Bishop and Grace will be the place where the priest ordination will happen! It will be a wonderful celebration and I hope each member of Grace will be able to come to this grand event in the life of Christ’s Church.
Until then, please know that I am intentional and prayerful as I live into the role of deacon every day. It is my prayer that I would be in service to God, to each of you at Grace and to our community. Once ordained a deacon, I will always be a deacon. All priests (and Bishops) forever live out his and her diaconal vows. Which means holding those who are in need close to my heart will forever be important to me.

THE GATHERING PLACE I spent many years as a hospice chaplain and worked with patients who were quite ill. Those patients that suffered from memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease held a special place in my heart. A few weeks ago, I was introduced to The Gathering Place, and this week I had the opportunity to join The Gathering Place for their meeting in Alvin. Did you know that Grace Episcopal Church along with First Christian Church and Breath of Life Community Nazarene join together to offer support and meeting space for The Gathering Place the third Wednesday of every month? The Gathering Place hosts socials for people with memory disorders and give participants moments of joy and companionship, while giving their caregivers a much-needed break. This week’s meeting was at First Christian Church and there was close to 20 partici-pants along with many volunteers…including 2 volunteers from Grace! The program theme this month was Wizard of Oz. The Gathering Place provides caregivers respite, a catered lunch for participants, craft time, game time, music, devotion and prayer time, and the day was finished with Bingo and prizes! Who doesn’t love a good game of Bingo with awesome prizes? If you are wanting to volunteer, please consider giving some of your time to The Gathering Place. MORNING PRAYER There will be at least one Sunday a month when we will have Morning Prayer at Grace. Morning prayer is deeply rooted in our Christian heritage. The Episcopal Church views Morning Prayer in this way: In many times and places, daybreak has been a time of prayer. Jews prayed in their synagogues at sunrise as well as at other times each day. This Jewish pattern of prayer formed the basis of the Christian monastic Daily Office, with its prayers or "hours" at seven times in each day. Thomas Cranmer's revision of the Daily Office for the first English Prayer Book (1549) reduced the number of services to two-one for morning (Matins) and one for evening (Evensong or vespers). In the Second English Prayer Book (1552), the morning service was given its present name, Morning Prayer. Psalms were recited at every one of the offices, with the whole Psalter recited once a week. In the 1549 BCP, psalms were read at both Morning and Evening Prayer, with the whole Psalter read "in course" once each month. Morning Prayer once was the chief Sunday service in most Anglican churches on three out of four Sundays, the First Sunday usually being a celebration of Holy Communion. This practice has not continued because the Eucha-rist has been recognized as the "principal act of Christian worship on the Lord's Day" in most parishes (see BCP, p. 13). However, Morning Prayer is clearly designated as a daily service for the worship of the church. This usage reflects the ancient tradition of the Daily Office. May our hearts be stirred and may God be worshipped and glorified through Morning Prayer at Grace.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY
As a response for interest in a Wednesday Night Bible Study, I'm pleased to announce an opportuni-ty for Sister Churches to Unite. As a way to bring about camaraderie and fellowship between Grace Alvin and Holy Comforter in Angleton, a video series from the Bible Project, “How to read the Bible” will be offered this fall. This video series will lead into a Bible study on the Book of Acts. Discussion will be led by Father Travis Smith+, Rector of Holy Comforter, as well as Father Preston Weatherly+ and Deacon Suzanne. Travis+ is a gifted biblical teacher so discussion will be insightful as he leads us through the book of Acts. This will also be a great way for our churches to get to know one another by sharing a meal, Bible study and lively discussion. The Study will be every Wednesday this fall, starting with dinner at 6 pm and Bible Study at 6:30. Childcare will be provided. Location: Holy Comforter Episcopal Church Parish Hall (227 Chenango, Angleton TX 77515)
