INQUIRING MINDSCritical Eye: Movie Reviews

FENCES This film never lets you forget that it is a story set for the stage.Denzel Washington reaches out and grabs everyone in theaudience with a powerful, unforgettable performance. Aided andabetted with a pitch-perfect cast, balanced in intensity and

brilliance by Viola Davis, this movie is a must-see no matter if you have alreadyseen it on stage.

HIDDEN FIGURESWhat are your requirements for an excellent, satisfying movie: believablecharacters portrayed by actors with faces the camera likes; a strong, engrossingplot; and music calibrated to bring the story along without intruding? Of course it allmust be smoothly integrated through the cinematography, editing and directing.

Well, one of the most likeable films to come along in a while is all of that and more.Hidden Figures crafts parallel stories of Southern white supremacy, malesupremacy in the work place and NASA's 1960s space program, smoothlyblending all into a positive, feel-good tale. The fact that much of it is true is amiracle in a bio-pic film. See it, take the younger generation to see it and spreadthe word. It's worth it.

20th CENTURY WOMENThis is not a documentary, but it certainly attracts an unusually large audience ofwomen born in the 20 th century. The title is really a misnomer. Mike Mills, thedirector, apparently has always been puzzled about his 20th century parents. Hedid the excellent Beginnings based on his father who "came out" at the age of 75.This film, powered by an excellent cast, is 1970s Santa Barbara spot on. AnnetteBening, in the title role, seems an embodiment of both fuzziness and positiveness.See it and share your feelings about the film. Jessie Tromberg, [email protected].

OLLI Outlook welcomes member reviews--film, book, theater, exhibits--and willpublish when space permits. See contact information for submission directions.
