June 17th is Moving Day for
United Methodist
MS Annual Conference Clergy!
One of the distinguishing characteristics of the United
Methodist Church is the itinerant system. Itinerancy
is the system which dates back to the days of John
Wesley. Pastors are moved to new churches and
churches receive new pastors. This system reminds us
that all United Methodist local churches are bound
together by a common mission and common
governance. This is how United Methodists work
together to accomplish mission and ministry through-
out the world.
After 18 years of faithful service, our Senior
Minister, Warren Black and his wife, Janis, will be
retiring here in Oxford. Associate Pastor, Claire
Dobbs, after 10 years of service will be taking an
appointment as Senior Pastor at First United
Methodist Church in Gulfport, MS.
Our new pastors are Eddie Rester, Senior Pastor, and Chris McAlilly, Associate Pastor.
Eddie comes from Parkway Heights in Hattiesburg, MS and Chris comes from Brewer
United Methodist Church in Shannon, MS. They are both superb pastors and leaders in the
MS Annual Conference.
Exciting days are in store for Oxford-University United Methodist, and one constant
remains—the faithfulness of OUUMC’s laity.
Bless you in this time of transition. And remember that our friendship remains, always!

Senior Adult Recognition: Shirley Ann Bowen
Shirley Ann Bowen was born February 6th, 1963 as Shirley Ann Martin in Itawamba County.. She was known to her friends as SAM. As a child she could be found climbing a tree, singing a song, or playing with her younger sister Patsy. At age 11 tragedy struck. She woke one morning with a high fever and the inability to walk. The family’s worst fears were confirmed. She was diagnosed with polio and told she would never walk. For weeks she was in isolation with only her mother, Erdice Martin, to keep her company.
Determined and stubborn, she decided the doctors were wrong. Three months later she was walking on crutches. After years of trying to maintain a normal childhood, something extraordinary happened. A young man out of Tupelo, Mississippi was becoming wildly popular with a new type of sound that hadn’t been heard before. His name was Elvis Presley and Shirley Ann was determined to meet him. Being pretty and charming to his manager, Red, got her through the door to speak with him. Shirley Ann had sang in church all of her life and even managed to win a Mid South Talent Fair in the 50’s.
She thought the two had a lot in common and a friendship began.
For years she visited him in Memphis at Graceland. She kept Christmas cards and personal mementos of his. Although she was crazy about Elvis, she was also crazy about a boy her age from her home town, Gordon Bowen. The two dated in high school and secretly married while she was in college at Mississippi State University pursuing a degree in Education.
She and Elvis stayed in touch until his death but their lives took very different directions. Once she earned her degree from State, she returned to her home town and built a house beside her mother, aunt, and sister. She sang at almost every wedding, funeral, and church service within the county. Her day job consisted of teaching 1st graders, which she did for 25 years before having to retire be-cause of post-polio syndrome.
In her 20’s she was told that because of polio, she would never be able to have children. Always stubborn and resilient, she tried. Several miscarriages and a stillbirth, (Marlo Kay Bowen) later she became pregnant and gave birth to her first healthy child, Charlotte, in 1975.
Shirley’s husband passed away in 2006 at which time she decided to move to Oxford to be closer to her daughter. While living at Azal-ea Gardens, she suffered a series of strokes. Because of her worsening healthy, she was moved to Graceland. Shirley Ann Bowen re-sides in room 37. She loves to listen to music, watch Days of Our Lives and has a sweet tooth for chocolate.

Saving and donating your pop tabs are a great, small gesture at making a difference in someone’s life. The Ronald McDonald House Charities uses the pop tab donations to recycle the valuable aluminum to go towards families supported through Ronald McDonald programs.

Notes from the Past ONE HUNDRED TEN YEARS AGO: In April 1904 the minister reported that “The Sunday school is not prospering as those interested in its progress de-
sire. The attendance has been only fair, possibly owing to the gloomy weather of the current spring….Our church is not wide awake and aggressive. We need
a revival in every heart and home There is some violation of church rules and obligations, but in the main the people are of upright deportment.”

NINETY YEARS AGO: At the April 1934 meeting of the Board of Stewards the first item of business was the need to repair some church windows. “Dr.
Bishop pointed out that we have an obligation to carry out the preservation of our stained glass windows which were gifts to the church.” ***
SIXTY YEARS AGO: Dr. Paul Tillich gave the sermon on April 4, 1954. “A native of Prussia, he was forced to flee Germany under the Nazis.” He taught
philosophical theology at Union Theological Seminary.

FIFTY YEARS AGO: Our “fine new building” [Youth Fellowship Hall] was first used on April 5, 1964, for a Congregational meeting. “To assure a success-
ful evening” Bill Baker, Dana Brammer, Tom Ray, Tracy Lusk, Mrs. Joe Rogers, Mrs. Ferris Dendy, Gene Grantz, and Jere Hoar volunteered to be responsi-
ble for the program, refreshments, and publicity. ***

Easter Offering
This year’s Easter Offering will go to the Good Samaritan Fund. Designated gifts will provide assistance for those who walk
in our doors in need of immediate help. Generally, these folks have been first referred to Interfaith Compassion Ministries and
who for various reasons come back to OU. Needs range from avoiding immediate disconnection of utilities to a needed place to
stay to prescription medication assistance. In addition to financial assistance, a kind ear is offered to those seeking aide. Please
support this vital ministry that is critical to the betterment of our community.
