3. OPENING HYMN: Sometimes a light surprises
Sometimes a light surprises the Christian while he sings; It is the Lord, who rises with healing in His wings: When comforts are declining, He grants the soul again A season of clear shining, to cheer it after rain.
In holy contemplation we sweetly then pursue The theme of God’s salvation, and find it ever new. Set free from present sorrow, we cheerfully can say, Let the unknown tomorrow bring with it what it may.
It can bring with it nothing but He will bear us through; Who gives the lilies clothing will clothe His people, too; Beneath the spreading heavens, no creature but is fed; And He Who feeds the ravens will give His children bread.
Though vine nor fig tree neither their wonted fruit should bear, Though all the field should wither, nor flocks nor herds be there; Yet God the same abiding, His praise shall tune my voice, For while in Him confiding, I cannot but rejoice.
4. CONFESSION
Minister: Dearly beloved brethren, the Scripture moveth us in sundry places to
acknowledge and confess our manifold sins and wickedness; and that we
should not dissemble nor cloke them before the face of Almighty God our
heavenly Father; but confess them with a humble, lowly, penitent, and
obedient heart; to the end that we may obtain forgiveness of the same, by
His infinite goodness and mercy. And although we ought at all times
humbly to acknowledge our sins before God; yet ought we most chiefly so
to do, when we assemble and meet together to render thanks for the great
5
benefits that we have received at His hands, to set forth His most worthy
praise, to hear His most holy Word, and to ask those things which are
requisite and necessary, as well for the body as the soul. Wherefore I pray
and beseech you, as many as are here present, to accompany me with a
pure heart and humble voice unto the throne of the heavenly grace, saying:
[People Kneel/Sit]
All: Almighty and most merciful Father, We have erred, and strayed from
Thy ways like lost sheep, We have followed too much the devices and
desires of our own hearts, We have offended against Thy holy laws,
We have left undone those things which we ought to have done, And
we have done those things which we ought not to have done, And
there is no health in us: But Thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us
miserable offenders; Spare Thou them, O God, which confess their
faults, Restore thou them that are penitent, According to Thy
promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesu our Lord: And grant,
O most merciful Father, for His sake, That we may hereafter live a
godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of Thy holy Name.
Amen.
5. THE ABSOLUTION
[People still kneel]
Minister: May the Almighty and merciful Lord grant unto you pardon and remission of
all your sins, time for amendment of life, and the grace and comfort of the
Holy Spirit. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
6. THE LORD’S PRAYER
All: OUR Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name, Thy
kingdom come, Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us
this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive
6
them that trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But
deliver us from evil. Amen.
Minister: O Lord, open Thou our lips.
All: And our mouth shall shew forth Thy praise.
Minister: O God, make speed to save us.
All: O Lord, make haste to help us.
[People Stand]
Minister: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
All: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without
end. Amen.
Minister: Praise ye the Lord.
All: The Lord's Name be praised.
Then shall be said or sung the Psalms in order as they be appointed.
7. PSALM 34 Benedicam Dominum. I WILL alway give thanks unto the LORD; * his praise shall ever be in my mouth.
2 My soul shall make her boast in the LORD; * the humble shall hear thereof,
and be glad.
3 O praise the LORD with me, * and let us magnify his Name together.
4 I sought the LORD, and he heard me; * yea, he delivered me out of all my fear.
5 They had an eye unto him, and were lightened; * and their faces were not
ashamed.
6 Lo, the poor crieth, and the LORD heareth him; * yea, and saveth him out of all
his troubles.
7 The angel of the LORD tarrieth round about them that fear him, * and
delivereth them.
8 O taste, and see, how gracious the LORD is: * blessed is the man that trusteth
in him.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the
beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen.

the sight of the heathen.
4. He hath remembered His mercy and truth toward the house of Israel : and all
the ends of the world have seen the salvation of our God.
5. Shew yourselves joyful unto the Lord, all ye lands : sing, rejoice, and give
thanks.
6. Praise the Lord upon the harp : sing to the harp with a psalm of thanksgiving.
7. With trumpets also and shawms : O shew yourselves joyful before the Lord the
King.
8. Let the sea make a noise, and all that therein is : the round world, and they
that dwell therein.
9. Let the floods clap their hands, and let the hills be joyful together before the
Lord : for He cometh to judge the earth.
10. With righteousness shall He judge the world : and the people with equity.

8
4. O let the nations rejoice and be glad: for thou shalt judge the folk righteously,
and govern the nations upon earth.
5. Let the people praise Thee, O God : yea, let all the people praise Thee.
6. Then shall the earth bring forth her increase : and God, even our own God,
shall give us His blessing.
7. God shall bless us :and all the ends of the world shall fear Him.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son :and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the
beginning, is now, and ever shall be :world without end. Amen.
12. THE APOSTLES' CREED
Minister: We stand with Christians throughout the centuries and throughout the
world today to affirm our faith in the words of the Apostles’ Creed
All: I BELIEVE in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord, Who was conceived by
the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary, Suffered under Pontius
Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; The
third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven,
And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From
thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; The holy Catholic Church; The
Communion of Saints; The Forgiveness of sins; The Resurrection of
the body, And the Life everlasting. Amen.
Minister: The Lord be with you.
All: And with thy spirit.

adversity; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.. Amen
The Second Collect at Evening Prayer
Minister: O GOD, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works
do proceed: Give unto Thy servants that peace which the world cannot
give; that both our hearts may be set to obey Thy commandments, and
also that by Thee we being defended from the fear of our enemies may
pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ
our Saviour. Amen.
The Third Collect, for Aid against all Perils
All: Lighten our darkness, we beseech Thee, O Lord; and by Thy great
mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the
love of Thy only Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
A Prayer for the Nation.
10
Minister: Lord God Almighty, who hast made all peoples of the earth for Thy glory, to
serve Thee in freedom and peace: Grant our President, His Deputy, the
Governors and to all other leaders in our county, wisdom and strength to
know and to do thy will. Grant to the people of our country a zeal for justice
and the strength of forbearance, that we may use our liberty in accordance
with Thy gracious will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and
reigneth with Thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
A Prayer for the Clergy and People.
Minister: Almighty and everlasting God, who alone workest great marvels: Send
down upon our Archbishop, Bishops, clergy, and Curates, and all
Congregations committed to their charge, the healthful Spirit of Thy
grace; and that they may truly please Thee, pour upon them the continual
dew of Thy blessing. Grant this, O Lord, for the honour of our Advocate
and Mediator, Jesus Christ. Amen.
All say the Prayer of Saint Chrysostom
All: Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord
to make our common supplications unto Thee; and dost promise
that when two or three are gathered together in Thy Name Thou wilt
grant their requests: Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of
Thy servants, as may be most expedient for them; granting us in
this world knowledge of Thy truth, and in the world to come life
everlasting. Amen.

[People stand]
15. HYMN: The King of love my Shepherd is
11
The King of love my Shepherd is,
Whose goodness faileth never:
I nothing lack if I am His
And He is mine forever.
Where streams of living water flow
My ransomed soul He leadeth,
And where the verdant pastures grow,
With food celestial feedeth.
In death’s dark vale I fear no ill
With Thee, dear Lord, beside me;
Thy rod and staff my comfort still,
Thy cross before to guide me.
Thou spread’st a table in my sight;
Thy unction grace bestoweth;
And, oh, what transport of delight
From Thy pure chalice floweth!
And so through all the length of days
Thy goodness faileth never;
Good Shepherd, may I sing Thy praise
Within Thy house forever.

blessing on the gifts that we offer today, that they might be a source of
blessing in our church, in our community, and in our world. Through this

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

you and be gracious to you. The Lord look kindly on you and give you

20. RECESSIONAL HYMN: Praise to the Lord
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise Him, for He is Thy health and salvation!
All ye who hear, brothers and sisters draw near;
Praise Him in glad adoration.
Praise to the Lord, who doth nourish thy life and restore thee;
Fitting thee well for the tasks that are ever before thee,
Then to thy need, He like a mother doth speed
Spreading the wings of grace o’er thee.
Praise to the Lord, who, when darkness of sin is abounding,
Who, when the godless do triumph, all virtue confounding,
Sheddeth His light, chaseth the horrors of night,
Saints with His mercy surrounding.
Praise to the Lord, oh, let all that is in me adore Him!
All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before Him;
Let the Amen sound from His people again,
Gladly for aye we adore Him.
