As orchid enthusiasts we strive to always do right by our plants.

    Hello Orchid Lovers,

I wish you all a very Happy Holiday Season.

Where oh where has the year gone??

    Well, let’s take a quick look…

—A very successful Valentines Show. We had record attendance this year. The displays

were beautiful and everyone attending enjoyed the show, especially those whose plants

were awarded and the Raffle winners.

—Great monthly programs/speakers with the top favorites being the Mini Workshops in

October and the Cyber Ramble in November. Both of these programs featured speakers

from our very own society. If you missed either month you can look forward to your Pro-

gram Chairman Sheldon Guttman enticing you with a variety of programs next year.

—There were beautiful plants brought in to our meetings each month to “wow” us and

vie for the “Best Blue Ribbon” of the night. I announced at the October meeting that the

winner of the Annual Blue Ribbon Award will have one of their Blue Ribbon Awarded

Plants featured on our Show Rack Card the following year. Our Winner from 2012 was

Tony Biviano. His beautiful BC Pastoral ‘Innocence’ took the honors. The member with

the most Best Blue Ribbons of the night is the winner of this award. So keep bringing

your lovely plants to our meetings.

Our Society has a number of new members this year and I hope that all of you enjoy

learning more about the wonderful world of orchids.

On a sadder note, we recently lost a long time member, Dave Hogaboom. Dave support-

ed the Boca Raton Society for many years by serving on the Board of Directors, lecturing

at our shows and sponsoring a trophy. He developed the After School Program where he

taught elementary children at several schools how to care for and grow an orchid. His

love for orchids was seen by the many beautiful plants he brought in to our meetings

each month. He shared his knowledge not only with our society but also volunteered at

the AOS Garden in Delray Beach as a guide through the garden. We extend our Sympa-

thy to Amy, his wife and his family and friends. Dave will be missed by many who were

    lucky to have known him.

Month by Month” to purchase visit: www.RedlandPress.com Reprinted with permission, all rights reserved.

December marks the beginning of the serious dry season in South Florida.

While this additional dryness provides relief from the autumnal rains that

can bring so many fungal problems, December is also the month of shortest

day lengths. This contracted period of light, on the contrary, reduces severe-

ly the drying potential for our plants. Nature thus both gives and takes away

from us in December. We must make sure, therefore, that we do not aid the

dark side of the force by improper watering. In December, above all, one

must stick strictly to the two cardinal principles of orchid watering: water

early in the day so your plants have as many hours as possible to dry, and

water heavily when you water, allowing longer intervals between watering

to dry plants thoroughly. This practice maximizes the benefit of the dryer air

of December and minimizes the adverse effect of the shorter day lengths.

Most sympodial orchids are resting in December and require less fertilizer.

Vandas, Phalaenopsis and other monopodial orchids should be fertilized

right through the winter although both the amount of fertilizer and the fre-

quency of application can be reduced.

December can be cold. Frost has occurred in the first week of the month and

unforgettably, the coldest temperatures ever recorded in South Florida were

registered on December 25, 1989. Keep a close eye on the forecasts during

    this volatile month.

Keep those vandas, phalaenopsis and hard cane dendrobiums as warm as

    you can.

    Did you know that . . .

—At one time orchids were owned only by the wealthy, but they now outsell every other house plant, surpassing even African violets, poinsettias, and chrysanthemums.

—In the 1800’s, tropical orchids were rare, unique, and expensive. In Europe, they became a way to exhibit one’s wealth and intellectual prowess.

—Orchids are mentioned in Chinese literature as early as 800 B.C. In Japan orchids were raised by samurai and the nobility.

—Hundreds of thousands of seeds the size of dust particles are contained in a single orchid seed pod.
