The OPEN VISOR

For a first fall Homecoming after the grand Centennial Celebration and reinstallation of the Iowa State Chapter the year prior, Homecoming ’14 provided an unforgettable setting for such a joyous occasion.

Nearly 100 DUs celebrated perfect sunny and mild Ames weather prior to and following a 37-30 Cyclone win over the Toledo Rockets at Jack Trice Stadium.

To kick off the day, the Colonnades Club gathered at 117 Ash. President Colin Finn ’05 presided as plans for a 20-man board were discussed, and new members Jeremy Jameson ’03 and Jim Doolittle ’02 attended their first meeting. Results of the just-concluded $1.25 million Centennial Campaign were reviewed. Chapter President Matt Gunkelman ‘15 introduced two associate members who proposed alternatives for their collaborative project to improve 117 Ash. Their ideas detailed renovating the barbecue pit as well as erecting a suitable sign in the yard identifying our college home.

The focus then moved to the parking lot between the stadium and C.Y. Stephens Auditorium, where Craig Foss ’71 and Jami Larson ’74 hosted a tailgate for about 75 DUs and guests gathered under the Delta Upsilon flag. DUs of all ages were represented, from some ’14s through a strong early 2000s contingent, and many ’70s era alumni. Mark Benda ’77 – who started for two years as the Cyclones’ middle linebacker – was in attendance, and with gusto, he grinned and sped off at a trot when he received word that former ISU coach Earle Bruce

had just arrived at the new Alumni Center.

At halftime, Delta Upsilon was represented by Sam Kammermeier ’14, current Interfraternity Council president, as one of five Iowa State seniors nominated for Homecoming King.

Postgame there was much activity at 117 Ash. Undergrads and alumni mingled over a barbecue buffet, and admired the new charter from reinstallation in September 2013; it was presented to the chapter at the summer DU Leadership Institute. News made the rounds of the chapter’s ninth-place finish in academics for spring 2014, and of DU being part of the Homecoming broomball tournament champions. Many of the DUs who currently live at 117 Ash, and those who did so just a few years or decades ago, took time to share stories and become better acquainted.

The scene may be a little different for Homecoming ’15, with the game being against the Texas Longhorn and the rather frightening date of October 31, we hope to see everyone there, in costume or otherwise.

If you lived at 117 Ash in the last 70 years, you should see at least one face from your era on the new Colonnades Club board. Twenty-two brothers have joined the board.

The mission of the Colonnades Club is simple:

• Expand alumni engagement with the chapter and with other alumni.

• Grow scholarship and leadership at the chapter.

The board will meet via teleconference four or more times each year.

For alumni, Colonnades will provide activities at 117 Ash and deliver communications such as the Open Visor. Undergraduate brothers will benefit from programs for scholarship and leadership.

You can help too. Reach out to your class contact listed in this issue to share suggestions about how to accomplish the Colonnades mission. Support Colonnades with your annual donation for 2015:

Williams 1834 Level $18.34/year

Blue Level $50/year

Gold Level $100/year

Use the enclosed envelope. Make your check out to Colonnades for the Williams 1834 and Blue levels. Gold level donations are made out to the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation (DUEF). DUEF donations are targeted to scholarship and leadership, and are tax deductible. They can also be made online at: www.duef.org/projects/csp/iowastate117ashcentennialcampaign

Thank you for expanding brotherhood at Delta Upsilon.

The OPEN VISOR

President’s LetterGreetings Fellow Brothers!

What an exciting year to be a member of Delta Upsilon! This past year, we have seen growth in a number of different areas, including fraternity size and academic performance.

Since the fall, we have had six more associate members sign, raising our chapter’s size to 61 members. Last semester, four wonderful seniors graduated from the university. At the beginning of the spring semester, we had 18 phenomenal brothers take the Oath of Delta Upsilon during initiation, and we are excited to see the amazing things they will do for this fraternity!

Speaking of brothers, our fall academics were higher than they have been since colonizing! In the fall semester, Delta Upsilon tied for fourth in academics with a 3.2 GPA, compared to the spring GPA of 3.01, and well above the 2.86 we scored the prior fall. Our associate member class even received a higher GPA average than our active members!

This spring, we are planning big things for your college home at 117 Ash. This semester will include the annual Greek Week competition. We are paired with Alpha Chi Omega sorority and Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. We also have big plans for the second annual Delta Upsilon Duck Hunt philanthropy, and hope to raise more money for Global Service Initiative. Along with the many events that will take place this semester, we have been instilling new practices in the chapter that foster leadership skills and build an overall atmosphere of team building and brotherhood. These practices include community service hours, discussion-based chapter meetings, and more.

Five of the eight executive team members are newly initiated members, and each brings enthusiasm, creativity and drive to make our fraternity excel, bringing new ideas to the table. Be expecting great things from them this year!

Lastly, I want to thank the all the alumni that help make this all happen. Without your support, we wouldn’t be able to do the great things that we are doing today and the great things we want to do in the future. If any of you are around the Ames area, come stop by the house, so you can see the improvement yourself. We, as undergraduates, always appreciate meeting the alumni that made this all happen, and we love to hear the advice and knowledge you give us, as well as the stories of your time here at 117 Ash Ave.

This year is a promising one, and I hope to see the chapter continuously improve. It’s a new year with new faces, and the potential in this chapter will take us to great places in the future.

Dikaia,

Keaton Mohr ’18 Chapter President

18 men became members of Delta Upsilon Fraternity on Saturday, January 17, when the Iowa State Chapter held its Initiation Ceremonies at 117 Ash.

As during the chapter’s reinstallation ceremonies in September 2013, Rite I of the initiation occurred the night before, and the candidates made their declarations and signed the Roll Book.

Rite II featured Herb Harmison ‘56 as Guest Speaker.

Brother Harmison has been in the news in another arena related to Delta Upsilon. He has been a longtime volunteer with The Arc of Story County, which assists people with intellectual or development disabilities. 18 men join Delta U in January

Brotherhood in Delta Upsilon offers many life long benefits. But they require us to depart from our normal routine to enjoy those benefits. When was the last time you shared a beer with others in your pledge class? When did you have a conversation with brothers about your years at Iowa State? Wouldn’t you enjoy another walk down to the DU dining room to share meal with Undergrads and alumni?

This year’s second annual Escape to 117 Ash is July 25 and 26, 2015. Mark your calendar and join us in Ames!

Last summer about 30 DU alumni and Undergrads spent an enjoyable afternoon of golf and sports followed by cocktails on the patio and dinner downtown. For a few cherished hours we relived our college days and met DUs who ranged from the Class of 1953 to

the present occupants of our historic college home.

Group activities will start at 117 Ash at Saturday at 10 a.m. and end on Sunday at 10 a.m. Hotel rooms or alternate housing is available, including at air-conditioned 117 Ash.

Send a note to John Carson ’73 at [email protected] to share your interest or receive more details.

Check out the DU webpage, isudu.org, for a list of current registrants.

Our inaugural Escape hosts – Jim Kincart ’70, Jim Smith ’72 and Dave Cox ’73 – had so much fun and did such a great job that they’ve signed up for another tour this year.

Steve Schoger ’74 said, “Escape to 117 Ash was an amazing and very satisfying experience, rekindling the great memories of my DU college days. I reconnected with bros that I had not seen in 40+ years and made friends with a bunch more that I had not met before!”

Norm DeRaad ’71 commented, “The Escape weekend was relaxing....giving me chance to kick back and reconnect with old friends and meet new brothers. The memories and reliving the great experiences I had in the house were fantastic.”

The house truly needs alumni support. We all had the opportunities DU provided and we owe it to today’s brothers to give them the same chance. It’s our turn. I hope you will join in the fun, and help support the chapter by attending this year’s “Escape to 117 Ash.”

Reconnect with your brothers….Escape to 117 Ash

Continuing the Legacy of 117 AshAll of you who are reading this Open Visor have either lived at 117 Ash as a DU undergrad or are a friend of Delta U. No matter

when you were here, you experienced a vibrant DU, with a house you were proud of and bros that were fun to be with. As you all know, the chapter fell on some hard times a few years ago, but with a lot of alumni help, the house was refurbished and the chapter brought back to life, and populated with a vibrant group of young men who will be our future leaders. We thank all of you for your support in getting back to where we are today…an amazing transformation.

What can we do to make sure DU at 117 Ash stays strong? More importantly, what can you do? There are several things you can give. Your time, as a mentor, a visitor, a contributor, for example. Your treasury, providing financial support for sending our undergrad members to the DU educational programs to enhance their leadership skills and develop them beyond the classroom, as well as planned giving. And your talents, to help steer potential new members to ISU DU, from our high school senior and college freshman ranks, to help with internship and job leads, and other ways to help the physical facilities or our DU development.

We will go into these legacy extenders in more detail, in future Open Visors. I will cover the estate planning and bequest topics in more detail. Others will provide guidance and encouragement of how you can contribute your time and talent to help the 117 Ash legacy. The important thing to note is that we appreciate any level of support…even staying in touch and reaching out to another bro who may not yet be re-connected is priceless! Let us know how you can help, or if you have questions on how to get started.

Kevin M. O’Byrne ’73 passed away suddenly in his home in Glendale, Cal., on February 2, 2015 at age 63.

The oldest of David and Ellen O’Byrne’s 10 children, Kevin was born in Denver, Colo., on August 28, 1951, but soon moved to Hawaii where his father was stationed in the Navy. Returning to the mainland five years later when his Dad began work for IBM, Kevin spent his

formative years in Waukegan, Ill., as a star athlete and gifted student. Kevin graduated from Iowa State with grand master points as a bridge player, an amazing outside shot in basketball, formidable golf skills and a degree in computer science.

In 1975 he began work in the Data Center at Arizona State University and met his future wife Kathy. A new job at First Interstate Bank shortly thereafter set in motion a long and distinguished career in the banking industry with Wells Fargo, spanning over 35 years-- and family relocations from Arizona to Colorado and then California in 1983.

In his first years with Wells Fargo, Kevin led teams responsible for the company’s primary data center systems. He then moved into a series of

technology leadership roles in retail banking, wholesale banking, brokerage and enterprise data warehousing functions. In 2003, Kevin began managing information technology for the Private Client Services group. In 2009, Kevin was named Chief Information Officer for Wealth, Retirement and Trust Technologies; as CIO, he lead an organization of 800 team members-- for whom he often generously served as coach or mentor. In January of 2015, Kevin was named head of Chief Data Office (CDO) Technology. This newly-created role was a perfect fit for Kevin’s deep technology knowledge and strong leadership skills. The announcement of his new role generated a great deal of “buzz” and enthusiasm among all those who knew Kevin by his stellar reputation.

Kevin was an outstanding and impressive individual, with his unique sense of humor, charm, love of sports, and infectious laugh. He was known for being able to see both the “big picture” and the details. He was daring and bold yet never reckless; intelligent and articulate; hardworking; loyal and generous, and never reluctant to tell someone what he “really thought.”

For this (and more) he will be forever loved and remembered, as a devoted husband to his wife of 36 years; a loving and proud father to his three children: Lauren, of Cleveland; Connor of Manhattan Beach, Cal., and Caitlin of Los Angeles; and respected big brother to his eight surviving siblings.

Chapter loses two from Class of ’73 and ’75

Stanley W. Blaue ’75 of Urbandale died unexpectedly on March 12, 2015, at the young age of 62 after a short illness. He was cared for at Methodist Hospital. Stan was born on February 24, 1953, in Storm Lake, and grew up in Sac City, with his parents Hank and Dorothy Blaue.

He graduated from Iowa State in 1975, and married Sharon Roete in 1983. Stan

was a successful salesman and business owner during his life in many industries, including insurance, marketing, and real estate.

He was a die-hard golfer and loyal Iowa State Cyclone fan. He loved being part of the Chain Gang at Drake, and was frequently found hanging with his friends at Charlie’s Filling Station eating a Coney Dog and enjoying a vodka grapefruit. Stan was vibrant, engaging and originally charming. His creative wit sparked laughter that was impossible to ignore. But above all, he provided unconditional love to his family.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years Sharon of Urbandale; his children Allison (Gary) Lennox of Boulder, Lauren of Minneapolis and Jonathan of Chicago; two grandchildren Eliza and Cole Stanley Lennox; his mother Dorothy; brother Rod (Marge) Blaue and sister Denise (Ross) Opsal and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends.

EMAIL ADDRESSES NEEDED FOR THESE BROTHERS

Almost 45 percent of our brothers from 117 Ash have no email address on record. That means they cannot get

email updates on the progress at 117 Ash. More importantly, brothers from their era at the house cannot reach out and

reconnect with them. Following are a list of brothers that we have no email address on record for. If you have their address,

or can ask them to share it, please send to [email protected]

Make room on the Delta U mantel for another trophy: First Place skit for Varieties 2015!

Delta Upsilon had six men active in “The Not So Storybook Ending,” the winning effort of their pairing with the men of FarmHouse and the women of Pi Beta Phi and Delta Delta Delta.

The plot was how a little boy and his sister were tired of their grandma telling the same story about the Tortoise and the Hare. While telling it again, she keeps falling asleep, so they add their own plot twists to the story, including appearances by Miley Cyrus, Katniss, the Three Blind Mice, and Little Bo Beep.

The grandma, however, likes the traditional ending and finishes the story the right way, but she sees that her grandchildren don’t like it and sends them to bed. Later, she realizes that she can still be fun and young even in an old age and so she wakes up the kids and changes the ending of the story so that they like it.

A lot of young DU talent was on display, as four freshmen and two sophomores were either on stage or in key roles. Keaton Mohr ‘18 played the little boy, and John Mills ’17 played the Hare. Zach Worthington ’18 was DU’s co-chair in the four-chapter pairing. Jonny Schmidt ’18 played a background character, Matt Paulaitis ’17 was part of the production, and Aamid Ahbab ’18 played guitar for the band.

When it came time for awards, the second place overall skit racked up one individual honor after another, but “The Not So Storybook E n d i n g ” won Best Choreography and Best Co-Chairs, and the People’s Choice Award – and then of course the First Place trophy. “We had A LOT of fun doing the show and met a lot of great people in Farmhouse, Pi Phi and Tri Delt,” said Brother Mohr. “It was a great experience!”
