But how does prayer inform and nurture our faith? Growing up in a very Catholic environment with the influence of loving parents, prayer was a natural part of the day. We prayed the Rosary, observed the importance of giving thanks for the food set before us and we attended Mass each week. Life was simple, and finding the time to fit in our formal daily prayers never seemed to be a challenge. There didn’t appear to be competing forces such as the television, internet and other distractions to disturb our daily rhythm of prayer either at home or school. Many families young and old today find it a continuing challenge to know how to pray with their children. When I gather with families for sacramental formation the idea of introducing prayer into a family’s daily ritual is often well received. Quite often it is the children who are the ones who demonstrate the desire to share their prayers with anyone who cares to listen. They are often like the widow in the Gospel persisting until someone gives in and listens. The traditional prayers of my primary years have stood me in good stead and there is a comfort and security in knowing how and when to say certain prayers. All our prayers, whatever or however we pray, need to nurture our faith. Our prayer acknowledges our trust in God who loves and enjoys our company when we choose to sit in prayerful solitude, or gather with a community of like-minded people. A healthy prayer life takes commitment and needs to change us if we are open to listening to God’s response to our prayers. Quite often we may feel that our prayers go unanswered. We become discouraged that our efforts go unrewarded. At times we even give up and therefore our faith life becomes diminished. In these times we need to persist in our prayer and trust that God never gives up listening. An even more challenging thought - it may be God persisting with us. There may be answers to our prayers that are unexpected but our hearts and minds are closed to these possibilities. Sometimes our prayer life needs a little boost or even re-igniting and there are so many resources offered today that can be accessed when looking for some personal guidance. The parish offers opportunities to gather with others in prayer during the week. Have you thought of trying Lectio Divina which is a way of reflecting on the scriptures and inviting God to respond through God’s Word? We also offer Christian Meditation which is silent prayer of the heart because we listen in silence with the ear of our heart. Take some time this week to read a scripture passage slowly and prayerfully or pray without words allowing yourselves to rest in the arms of God. If even a wicked judge will listen eventually, how much more will God listen to those who cry to him day and night? (V7) Bernadette McAndrew The only thing that matters is what God thinks of us.

PRAYER AS A RHYTHM TO OUR DAY

Prayer, in its many forms, is the key expression of faith.

A CALL TO CARE FOR CREATION

A presentation by Fr Sean McDonagh SSC will be held on Thursday 3rd November at St Mary’s Parish Centre Ipswich, Cnr Elizabeth Street and Roseberry Parade , Woodend commencing at 10am with morning tea. The presentation will be 10.30am—12.30pm.

If you will be attending please let the Parish Office know by Monday 31st October.

Irish Columban Fr Sean McDonagh is known around the world as an eco-theologian who works to raise awareness on the connections between justice and peace issues, environmental sustainability and faith. He is an outspoken critic of policies that allow for the systematic degradation of the environment, linking them to global poverty and the increased suffering of the poor.

Our parish will conduct the annual World Mission Month appeal for Catholic Mission on the weekend of October 22/23

As we approach World Mission Sunday, we commend the forthcoming Catholic Mission appeal to you. In the liturgy for this weekend, we hear in the first reading of a battle being waged and the impact of

Moses on the outcome of that conflict. When Moses holds his arms aloft, Israel has the advantage. But when he tires, the tide turns. In order to ensure his arms remain raised, Aaron and Hur offer support, one on either side. Your parish will be one of those men, joining with Catholic Mission on the other side. Together, we will help “keep their hands steady”. Thank you, in anticipation, for your generosity – you will be responsible for helping turn the tide against poverty, domestic violence and other injustices.

David McGovern, Director, Brisbane Archdiocese

LEICHHARDT CARE & CONCERN MEETING: Our next meeting will take place next TUESDAY, 18th October from 9.30am in the former Presbytery. Interested Parishioners are invited to come along.

This is of particular benefit it coins roll out of the envelope, as we can correctly balance amounts with givers. While some may not wish to do this for their own reasons, we appreciate the extra little effort of those who do.

DON’T JUST LEAVE IT TO SOMEONE ELSE, BE PART OF MAKING OUR PARISH BETTER! Mark your diary now, and plan to come along.
