Dear Friends,

After some deep reflection and evaluation, I have decided not to seek that 15th and final interim, but to retire instead on September 1st of this year. Eastminster is my 14th and final interim.

Between now and Sept. 1, I will con-tinue as your interim pastor, doing what I can to smooth the transition with the ad-ministrative commission and the way to the calling of your new pastor. After Sept. 1, Betty and I will move back to our house in Atlanta.

In this transition time for all of us I earnestly seek your prayers for Eastmin-ster as it moves into a bright future, and for Betty and me as we move into a new phase of our life. But now there is work to do! And challenges to be met, all in the context of God’s love and grace. The good-byes can come later.

I am the last of my seminary class to be working fulltime. I think it is time for me to join them.

I thought you might like to see the list of all the churches I have served, includ-ing eighteen years of interims. There are pictures of all but one hanging in my church office here; it is quite a collection!

BE IN PRAYER FOR: VBS volunteers and attendees that the message outshines the activities, for our Preschool staff that they might find rest and refreshment over the summer break, returning renewed in the fall (also for our public school teachers), for our missions team; for our students at-tending Radius Camp, and those moving onward and up-ward in their academic and spiritual growth; and for all the members and friends of Eastminster that we may discern God’s will.

May 21, 2013 Dear Sisters and Brothers, members of Eastminster, On May 13 there was a wonderful meeting in Fellowship Hall to discuss the future of Eastminster. About 100 people came. There were statements by Jennifer and me and then lots of questions about the future and as the evening progressed we all became excited about the future opening up before this church. If you couldn’t be there, find someone who was and talk to them! Warning! You will find their spirit to be quite contagious. Is Eastminster going to wither and collapse? Of course not! A Presbyterian congregation is among the hardiest things on this planet. They are, after all, filled with talented, gifted, persevering, enduring, and courageous people. In 14 interims I have learned among many other things that Presbyterian congregations are hardy, resil-ient, and almost impossible to destroy! By the grace of God they can generate new life in the most challenging situations. Eastminster is rising to the challenge and it started moving forward on May 13th. The Administrative Commission will be empowered to act for the Presbytery of Central Florida on June 4th and its purpose is to get Eastminster back on its feet as soon as possible. The commission will function as the session until a new session is elected by the congregation and trained. How will the session be elected? By the same process that has been used in the past: names will be submitted by church members, a slate of nominees prepared, a congregational meeting called, and new elders elected. Those elected will be trained covering the aspects of Presbyterian the-ology and polity. Also those who have resigned from the Pastor Nominating Commit-tee will be replaced so that committee can get up and running again. One of the basic rights of a Presbyterian congregation is to elect and call its own pastor. Local choice with regard to a pastor is a given. Eastminster remains a congregation with its property in the PCUSA. That means that any attempt to get the congregation to readdress the issue of withdrawal from the denomination needs to cease. The congregation has the right to organize its life and program around on-going involvement in the PCUSA. How about the finances of the congregation? Support will be lost, but the con-gregation will move forward with adequate resources to rebuild programs, support a staff the congregation can afford, carry on mission, keep up the facility, maintain splendid worship and do what else needs to be done. People are already stepping up and volunteering to keep the basics moving. The can-do spirit is alive and well here. A question was asked at the meeting about those who voted to leave or have already left. All are welcome to stay or return if they are comfortable staying in the PCUSA. Some have said that they are not comfortable doing that. Nobody is being forced out or being asked to leave. Nobody denies that Eastminster has suffered a serious wound, but it is not fatal and will be healed in God’s own good time. You are in a rebuilding mode and that is a good thing. It is a creative, challenging, amazing time. Hallelujah! Amen! Shalom, Harry and Jennifer

COMPASSION TRIP TO EL SALVADOR: 11 travelers from Brevard County left May 27th to share your love for the children who live in deep poverty there and who are sponsored through this church. Please pray that hearts will be touched by Christ. Please also pray for our travelers, our partner church in El Salva-

dor, and those in Compassion that are walking with us on this journey. Those wish-ing to make donations for Bibles and other items for our partner church and/or help defray costs, can make donations to Eastminster, marked ‘Compassion El Salvador trip.’ Watch for photos and updates!

HELPING OKLAHOMA: Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is there with spiri-tual support and trained volunteers. Will you stand in the GAP (Give/Act/Pray)? For example, you can give $10 right now by texting PDA to 20222! See the outside or inside bulletin boards for more information, or go to www.pcusa.org, disaster assis-tance.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY: Construction on our faith-build is proceeding with an anticipated completion date this month. For more info, please contact David Nelson, 443-852-2573 or email [email protected]. <<PICTURED: Barbara and Bill Allen PICTURED: >> Gary P., Vicki Freese, and David Nelson

TOOL DRIVE: In honor of Father’s Day and to supply our builders with tools, we are conducting a “Father’s Day Tool Drive.” A wheelbarrow will be in the CMC hall-way weekdays and in the narthex on Sunday for you to leave your (new) tools for Habitat.

‘HIS HANDS’ NEEDS MORE HANDS! Similar to Stephen Ministry, His Hands volunteers visit, on a regular basis, church members who are in need of a little extra TLC. And we need more help, not just to visit, but also to plan for the future, perhaps reinstating Stephen Ministry. Next meeting: Tuesday, June 18, 11 am, in the Meeting Room. (We always meet the third Tuesday of each month.) If you’re interested but can’t make this meeting, call Jennifer McGee at 608-8065, and plan to attend the meeting July 16.

June 14

It’s the tradition in many communities that flags go up for Memorial Day and stay up through the Fourth of July, thus including Flag Day—which commemo-rates the adoption of the flag of the United States, that day by resolution of the Second Continental Congress, June 14, 1777.

*Parents will need to transport children to and from the off cam-pus events; however, they will not need to stay. The cost per child will be given to parents at VBS.

THE TIME HAS COME...

Most of you know by now that David Vogeding, our beloved Director of Music, is retiring on June 30th. Not only will he be leaving Eastminster, but he is also stepping down as Music Director of the Indialantic Chamber Singers. How-ever, he is planning to stay in the area, so we expect that we’ll be hearing from him musically in many different ways. We are planning a Retirement Luncheon for David on Sunday, June 30, at 12:00 noon, in the Fellowship Hall (as this will be his last day). Sign up in the church office (limited seating). The Session of Eastminster Church has approved the designation of a Love Gift Fund for David. If you desire to contribute, please mark all checks in the memo section “David’s Love Gift”. Also, we invite you to send in letters of appreciation, poems, pictures, etc., that can be put into a memory book. Deadline for the Love Gift will be Sunday, June 16.; cards need to be to Tangela Copeland by Sunday, June 21.

THE PERFECT CHURCH If you should find the perfect church Without one fault or smear, For goodness sake! Don’t join that church; You’d spoil the atmosphere. If you should find the perfect church Where all anxieties cease, Then pass it by lest joining it You mar the masterpiece. If you should find the perfect church Then don’t you ever dare To tread upon such holy ground; You’d never fit in there. But since no perfect church exists Made of imperfect men, Then let’s cease looking for that church And love the church we’re in. Of course it’s not a perfect church, That’s simple to discern— But you and I and all of us Could cause the tide to turn. What fools we are to flee our post In that unfruitful search To find at last where problems loom God proudly builds His Church. So let’s keep working in our church Until the resurrection, And then we each will join God’s Church Without an imperfection.

CALLING ALL ELDERS:

We are updating our list of Elders and discovering that several church members are Elders from prior churches and are eager to serve at Eastminster. And, because we have such helping hands here, sometimes the same group is asked over and over again.

If you are an elder, please let the church know how and where you’d like to serve:

Available to serve communion, at the 8:15 or 10:30 am Sunday service and/or 10:00 am Summer Service (June, July, Aug); or, unable to serve communion, but available for other tasks.

LADIES’ SPRING TEA

For those of you unable to attend the Annual Women’s Fundraiser, here are a few pictures to show you what you missed AND to encourage you to plan to attend next year. It’s always a fun time and 100% of proceeds go to a local women’s charity.

This year’s tea raised $2,000 for the Salvation Army’s Sue Pridmore House for Women. Many thanks to Lynda Trader, Organizer Extraordinaire; Susan Vallette, Master Chef, and her kitchen team who prepared all the food; the table hostesses who surprise and delight each year with their creativity; Cindy Earp for sharing her vintage clothing collection; and all the attendees who help support our programs.

From Pam & Harv Hobson: Dear Eastminster Friends, Thank you for the encour-

agement Harv has received since his surgery. You have shown God’s love to him

through prayer, cards, visits, phone calls and meals, as well as being the protective

circle that sat with Pam through the surgery. We know the hands of Harv’s earthly

physician were guided by the hands of the Great Physician. Thank you for being the

hands and feet of Jesus. With much love, Harv and Pam Hobson.

“Dresses to die for…”

Not only did Susan cook up a storm, she prepared a beautiful table.

Ann Warden, Sandy Breitmeier & Marilyn Riddagh share a laugh while

preparing treats for the tea.

“By the sea, by the sea…”

The Indialantic Boardwalk Triathlon will be held Sunday, June 23, beginning at Nance Park. The bicycle portion will go west on Fifth Avenue, over the 192 causeway, north on US 1, east on Eau Gallie causeway, and south on Riverside Dr, returning to Nance Park. Riverside Dr will be closed southbound from 7-10:30 am on the 23rd, so take A1A to Fifth to come to church. Fifth Ave. will be open by 8:30.
