Welcome to our production of “HMS Pinafore”, which is essentially based on the Australian Essgee Entertainment company’s hilarious and affectionate update of Gilbert & Sullivan’s comic opera. The original, which opened at the Opera Comique, London in 1878, ran for an unprecedented 571 performances and remains one of the more popular Savoy Operas to the present day. The Essgee production dates from 1997 and together with “Pirates” and “Mikado” forms a trilogy of updated G&S shows which became smash hits in Australia and New Zealand. This version of “Pinafore” takes a number of liberties with the traditional style of the show, with clever libretto rewrites and replacement of a couple of songs with several songs adapted from other G&S operas. The adaptation also elevates the character of Dick Deadeye to a central role in the play. Generally, the use of modern stage acting and

movement techniques help to embellish and bring out the comedy at the heart of this G&S favourite.

In September 2007 we shall be putting on the zany farce “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum” - the Broadway hit musical featuring the music and lyrics of Stephen Sondheim and librettists Larry Gelbart (Mash)and Burt Shevelove. This will be followed, in March 2008, by one of the most celebrated Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals, “The King And I”.

The staging of a theatre musical generally involves people in many roles whether onstage, behind-the-scenes or at front-of-house. The Society is always on the lookout for persons who are keen to participate and feel they can contribute in some capacity. The Society values the support afforded it by its Vice-Presidents and Patrons new members are most welcome. If you are interested, please refer to the joining details at the back of this programme.

ACT I opens with the sailors of “HMS Pinafore” scrubbing the decks and polishing the brass preparing for the arrival of Sir Joseph Porter, the First Lord of the Admiralty. Sir Joseph is coming that day to ask for the Captain's daughter's hand in marriage. It is payday on the Pinafore and Buttercup, a bumboat gypsy woman, arrives to sell her wares. Buttercup alludes to a dark secret she is hiding. It appears that the entire crew owes money to Dick Deadeye. Dick is a fellow seaman, the ship's contraband supplier, money lender, and mischief maker. We next meet Ralph, pronounced ‘Raife’, Rackstraw. He loves the Captain's daughter Josephine, but knows that she is much above his station. Dick Deadeye firmly believes in England's class system and he tells Ralph that his love for the high born beauty is doomed. Captain Corcoran appears on deck to inspect his crew. The Captain confides in Buttercup that his daughter is showing little interest in the prospect of marriage to Sir Joseph Porter. Josephine appears and tells her father that she loves a humble sailor on board his own ship, but she promises the Captain that the sailor shall never know it. The Captain prepares his welcome speech for Sir Joseph as the crew get ready for inspection. Sir Joseph's entourage of sisters, cousins, and aunts precede him as he comes on board and explains his remarkable rise in rank from office boy to First Lord. Sir Joseph is impressed with Ralph and tells him that a British sailor is any man's equal. This idea prompts Ralph to plan to declare his love for Josephine and all the crew approve, except for Dick Deadeye. Ralph confesses to Josephine that he loves her, but she keeps her promise to her father and haughtily rejects Ralph. The crew try to comfort Ralph, but he is inconsolable and opts for suicide. Just in time, Josephine confesses her love for her able seaman. The couple decide to elope that night with the help of the ship's crew. Only Dick Deadeye opposes the couple's plans.

ACT II opens with Sir Joseph teaching the Captain to dance a hornpipe while Josephine is torn between her love for Ralph and her sense of duty to her father and her class. The crew gamble their wages away in Dick Deadeye's illegal casino. The Captain is at his wits' end with his crew acting strangely, and Sir Joseph feeling rejected by the Captain's unhappy daughter. In the shadows, Little Buttercup reveals her tenderness for the Captain, but she too is trapped in the tyranny of class and cannot declare her true feelings. Buttercup warns the Captain not to take things at face value. Ralph and Josephine face the fact that they either accept the world's sorrow and restrictions or they follow their hearts. Sir Joseph is ready to give up pursuing Josephine, but the Captain and Dick Deadeye convince him that she may feel intimidated by Sir Joseph's exalted position. If Sir Joseph would tell her of his belief that love levels all rank, she might have a change of mind. Sir Joseph agrees and approaches Josephine with this idea that love levels all rank. This convinces Josephine to follow her heart and marry her true love, Ralph. Dick Deadeye tells the Captain of Josephine and Ralph's

plans. The furious Captain hides in order to catch the elopers. Captain Corcoran denounces his daughter and her fiancé, but they protest that according to Sir Joseph's philosophy, a British sailor is the equal of anyone in the world. Affronted by events, the Captain swears, only to be sent to his cabin by Sir Joseph. When Sir Joseph learns of Ralph's love for Josephine, he sends Ralph to the ship's prison. At this point, Little Buttercup reveals her terrible secret. When she was a nurse, she carelessly mixed up two babies, one of low birth, the other a patrician. The two babies were Ralph and Captain Corcoran. As a result, Ralph is really the high-born Captain, and the Captain is none other than the common Ralph. In light of these circumstances, Sir Joseph finds it impossible to marry the low born Josephine, so he hands her over to Ralph. The former high born Captain is a common sailor and able to wed Little Buttercup. Sir Joseph laments that he will have to spend the rest of his days alone. But Dick assures Sir Joseph that what he needs is a Secretary Of The Navy to look out for him and his entourage. Dick accepts the position immediately.

THE STORY OF “HMS PINAFORE”

SHOW HISTORY

The fourth collaboration between W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan was their first blockbuster hit: “HMS Pinafore”, or “The Lass That Loved a Sailor.” This opera opened on 28 May, 1878 at the Opera Comique. It seemed at first as if it was going to be a failure as a heat-wave spread over England which adversely affected the takings to an alarming degree. Theatres became stiflingly hot and were the last places the public wished to visit at such a time. However, by a stroke of good fortune Sullivan played “Pinafore” at a Promenade Concert in Covent Garden and popularised it to such an extent that as the weather became cooler, people flocked to the Opera Comique to hear the real thing. By the end of August “Pinafore” was all the rage in London.

It ran for 571 performances and became a huge success in England, as well as in America, being copied illegally by dozens of performing companies in the US, as well as being presented there by Gilbert, Sullivan and Carte themselves. The 571 performances were almost unprecedented for a musical theatre piece, and this was one of the longest runs up to that time.

Gilbert, in the person of Sir Joseph Porter, K.C.B., caricatures William Henry Smith, who was M.P. for Westminster at that time. He represented Westminster from 1868 to 1885, having risen from a newsboy to be head of the Admiralty, as First Lord. This post was offered to him by Disraeli which he held from 1877 to 1880. W. H. Smith, P.C., born 24 June, 1825, an eminent statesman, married Emily, Viscountess Hambledon, and died in 1891. The post itself is purely an honorary one and the office of The First Lord of the Admiralty was abolished in 1964. The functions of the commissioners were transferred to the Admiralty Board of a tri-service Defence Council, and the title of Lord High Admiral was re-vested in the Sovereign.

“HMS Pinafore” had two London revivals in the later 19th Century, in 1887 and 1899. They ran for 120 and 174 performances respectively. It then toured with D’Oyly Carte until 1982.

The Essgee version of “Pinafore” is the third and final part to the Essgee trilogy, after “The Pirates of Penzance” and “The Mikado”. After closing their New Zealand production of “The Pirates of Penzance” in early November 1996, later the same month, the Essgee group commenced rehearsals for their version of “Pinafore” in Brisbane Australia for a Melbourne which opened in January 1997.

BIOGRAPHIES - THE PRODUCTION TEAM

June Thomas (Director) June’s love of the stage began at a very early age and has continued ever since. She joined the Progress Theatre in Reading where she learnt basic stagecraft i.e. scenery construction, make-up and mime etc, where she met one or two budding composers who introduced her to the musical theatre. Already hailing from a musical family – her grandfather was a bandmaster, choirmaster and church organist and her mother was a piano teacher and church organist, and her father was a fine singer - she realized that the musical stage was going to be her future hobby, and it has remained so ever since. She has taken many leading roles in this company and, before her marriage to Haydn, in Reading Operatic Societies. Her favourite was Elizabeth Barrett-Browning in “Robert and Elizabeth”, which she performed on two occasions. But more and more over the past 30 years, she has migrated into directing shows, which she finds very rewarding. “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Street Scene” were two shows that she remembers with great affection. “HMS Pinafore” has also proved to be great fun to direct and she hopes you all enjoy watching it as much as the cast have enjoyed rehearsing it.

Derek Canfield (Musical Director) It’s now over 40 years since Derek joined the Society, so he surely needs no introduction to our audiences. Derek returns as Musical Director for “HMS Pinafore” after having had a rest from duties during our last show. That was the theory; in practice Derek was accompanist for most rehearsals and you may have noticed him on piano in the pit for the production. However, a month’s idyllic camping in France was managed, which refreshed him to return full of enthusiasm for this production. On first examination of the Essgee revision of “HMS Pinafore”, Derek admits that he was shocked to find that the conventional orchestra was replaced with keyboards. But once he realised how cleverly the music has been adapted to a more modern style, he quickly gained enthusiasm for this version, which he believes is as good as any of the G & S updates, including “Broadway Pirates”, that the Society performed a few years ago. From the start of rehearsals, Derek has inspired the singing of the talented cast who have responded with much enthusiasm to the guidance of the production team. As Captain of the band, Derek assures you that the ad libs. improperly addressed to him and the band from the stage are actually written into the libretto!

Mike Davall (Stage Manager) Mike has been a Member of the Society now some 35 plus years and is continuing in his role of Stage Manager. He heads up a hard working, efficient and fun loving Stage Crew. Everyone gets on with each other and if there is a laugh to be had, they will find it and exploit it to the full, very often at Mike’s expense! However Mike is the captain of the ship and together with his Crew work together to ensure a smooth voyage. As with every Crew there are the junior ratings, the necessary tradesmen who bring their specialism’s, and of course the various Ship’s Officers. The Junior Ratings carry out all the tasks like painting, blacking, and handing out screws and nails, the tradesmen range from carpenters to fabricators (they can ingeniously turn out finished products from all sorts of scraps and materials). The Officers, of course, manage proceedings and keep the ‘well oiled’ ship running smoothly. Mike has worked his way up through the ranks, having been a fabricator, painter, junior officer and now Captain. It goes without saying that Captain Mike and his Crew hope that you enjoy “HMS Pinafore” and that your evening’s journey will leave you in a happy frame of mind.

Sue Grosvenor (Choreographer) Sue is no stranger to the stage, having attended Italia Conti Stage School as a child. Her professional stage debut was as the Babe in the Wood in pantomime at Wimbledon Theatre with Jim Davidson and she appeared in a range of TV productions at that time. Her first loves are dancing and choreography; (she regularly teaches tap when society members require it). Since joining CFAOS, almost ten years ago, Sue has had the opportunity to work as choreographer on some of the best musicals ever written - with “South Pacific”, “Oklahoma”, “Cabaret” and “Singin’ in the Rain” amongst her favourites. The lead in that particular show has still yet to forgive her for insisting he gets completely drenched in the rain scene (though the audience seemed to love it!). “HMS Pinafore” is her first G&S and she has really enjoyed the different style. This is a fun and lighthearted show, which she hopes the audience will leave with a smile on their face. It has been a pleasure to be involved. When not dancing, Sue runs her own business training company - Performance For Business - specialising in management, presentation and communication skills development.

BIOGRAPHIES - THE PRINCIPALS

DICK DEADEYE - Matt Benbrook Now established in a successful career as a software analyst, Matthew finally succumbed to years of persuasion from his theatrical parents when he appeared in his first show, “Oklahoma” in 2002. This was followed by his first Gilbert & Sullivan production “The Mikado” and “Fiddler on the Roof”. Since then, there's simply been no holding him back. Matthew went on to play a dancing waiter in “Cabaret” and a slightly camp civil servant in “Chess”. Casting clothes, as well as caution to the wind, and wearing not much more than his smile, he appeared in “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” and Ben Elton’s “Popcorn”. In 2004, Matt took on his first principal role with CFAOS - a complete contrast to his previous characters - in the form of Charles, the austere butler in “Me & My Girl”, this was followed with the half-witted Benny Southstreet in “Guys and Dolls”, and then the all singing, all dancing Billy Lawlor in “42nd Street”. More recently he played the part of Peter in “Jesus Chris Superstar” and finally Simon Stride in the dark musical “Jekyll & Hyde”, but Hyde let him live to see another show in the last performance. He is thoroughly looking forward to playing Dick Deadeye in this G&S with a difference.

RALPH RACKSTRAW - Richard Young Though quite late in discovering the stage, Richard soon realised just how much fun it can be and was soon to be found in the chorus singing his way through the works of Gilbert & Sullivan with Reading Operatic Society in shows ranging from “The Gondoliers” to “The Boyfriend”. After moving house to Camberley he was delighted to discover that CFAOS were preparing to do “Chess” - a firm favourite of his ever since he saw it at the West End. Since then principal parts have included Gerald Bolingbroke in “Me and My Girl”, Pat Denning in “42nd Street”, Simon Zealotes in “Jesus Christ Superstar” and Frederick Trumper in a later production of “Chess”. Shows have come full circle now as “HMS Pinafore” was his first ever show and Richard was delighted to see it selected. Playing the part of Ralph Rackstraw is a hugely exciting and challenging prospect so it is with some trepidation that he will be ‘carefully on tiptoe stealing’ on to the stage. The addition of Marcus to the family at the end of April last year means that he is more indebted than ever to his lovely wife Susannah for her patience and support of his stage addiction.

JOSEPHINE - Danni Taylor Danni discovered her passion for theatre at age five when her parents took her to The Prince Regent Theatre to satisfy her inner drama queen. Whilst there she enjoyed being a part of a variety of musicals and pantomimes, as well as playing Abigail in “Pudsey the Musical” for BBC1’s Children In Need. Since then she has taken every opportunity to perform in and out of school taking on a number of lead roles and singing in venues such as The Royal Albert Hall, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Saddler’s Wells and Her Majesty’s Theatre. Having later trained at Stagecoach, Farnborough, Danni is now teaching Dance there! She also moonlights as a lifeguard! Danni made her CFAOS debut when she joined us as Diane Lorimer, one of the tapping belles in “42nd Street”. She is now thrilled to be playing Josephine in “HMS Pinafore” with such a talented cast and enjoying the vocal challenge! After achieving five A-levels including Music and Performance Studies, she is currently studying for a Foundation Degree in Small Scale Theatre Practice with Guildford College and Guildford School of Acting.

CAPTAIN CORCORAN - Martin Sampson Martin was surprised to note that “HMS Pinafore” marks his 80th show – he certainly doesn’t feel that old! Martin first joined a local society soon after his 18th birthday, and went on to play Bill Sikes in “Oliver!”, Curly “Oklahoma!”, Lancelot “Camelot”, Kipps “Half A Sixpence”, Danilo “The Merry Widow”, and Sky Masterson “Guys and Dolls” among others. He has been a member of CFAOS since 1986, and has been privileged to portray a wide variety of characters. Credits include Sid Sorokin “Pajama Game”, Mike Connor “High Society”, The Mikado “The Mikado”, Fred Graham / Petruchio “Kiss Me Kate”, the Pirate King “The Pirates of Penzance”, Billy Bigelow “Carousel”, Billy Flynn “Chicago”, the eponymous role in “Sweeney Todd”, Adam Pontipee “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers”, Jud Fry “Oklahoma!”, Julian Marsh “42nd Street” and Enrico Castelli “Copacabana”. When not rehearsing, Martin is busy renovating his new home with Sue, or on the local bowling greens. During the day, he is a Chartered Management Accountant

Page 11: The Societycodymusical.co.uk/productions/previous/pinafore/files/... ·  · 2016-09-28based on the Australian Essgee Entertainment company’s hilarious and ... him as he comes on

SIR JOSEPH PORTER - Ron Walker Ron has been a member of the Society for more years than he cares to admit and has performed a wide variety of roles that would appear to be getting increasingly more eccentric. He hopes that this is no reflection of his own character. Roles that he has particularly enjoyed in recent years include the Emcee in “Cabaret”, Fagin in “Oliver” and Emile de Becque in “South Pacific”. Prior to that he played a number of romantic leads, including the Red Shadow in “Desert Song”, Sky Masterson in our first production of “Guys and Dolls”, Danilo in “The Merry Widow” and Gaylord Ravenal in “Show Boat”. At least these days there is not much call for him to sing the high notes. Ron is an aeronautical engineer at QinetiQ and chairman of our Social Committee. His main aspiration in life is that his daughter, now aged three, will stay asleep beyond 6.00 am.

BIOGRAPHIES - THE PRINCIPALS (CONTINUED)

BUTTERCUP - Siân Thomas Siân has been performing since she was three years old when she appeared on stage, in her dance school production, as a bumble bee. She then progressed to the more complex roles of a bluebird and then a tree! At the age of ten she joined the cast of CFAOS (then known as the Farnborough & RAE Amateur Operatic Society) after harassing her poor Producer mum for years, but finally persuading her that crowd scenes in “Kismet” weren’t authentic unless they had children in them! That was the start of a lifelong association with the society and since then she has appeared in many shows, nearly all with CFAOS and mostly as a dancer interspersed with principal roles which include Velma Kelly in “Chicago”, the title role in “Calamity Jane” and Charity in “Sweet Charity”. This is Siân’s first main principal role in a Gilbert & Sullivan operetta and she is enjoying playing Buttercup immensely – even though the character is described as a bumboat woman! In between rehearsals, performing and holidays Siân works in the marketing department of The College of Law in Guildford as an events and e-communications executive.

HEBE - Carrie Canfield Carrie has been singing for as long as she can remember, both as a member of the chorus, and in many leading soprano roles in operettas, musicals and Gilbert and Sullivan productions, for this society, and other societies in the South. Since she retired from a pensions accounting career last year she has made the most of being a lady of leisure, by trying to keep fit, and enjoying lots of camping and walking holidays with husband Derek, our musical director. Although she confesses to being a G&S ‘traditionalist’ at heart, she is very much enjoying the challenge of this new Essgee version of “HMS Pinafore”. Having undertaken the role of ‘prompt’ for the Society in recent shows, Carrie welcomes the opportunity to perform on stage again, in the role of ‘Hebe’.

BOATSWAIN - Tim Canfield Tim has been a member of CFAOS from the age of ten, as a pickpocket in “Robert & Elizabeth”. Since then a varied succession of dancing, singing and acting cameos have been punctuated with lead roles such as Cornelius Hackl in “Hello Dolly”, Bobby Child in “Crazy for You”, Bill Snibson in “Me and My Girl” and Will Parker in “Oklahoma”. The best part of doing these shows is just having fun with such a great bunch of people, we’re having a blast, and I’m sure that comes over to our audiences! Tim also enjoys designing the artwork for the society, and is the creator and editor of our new website. We are always looking at ways to communicate to our audiences and potential members through our website, so if anyone has ideas for improvements or additions please let him know. Thanks also to Gary Oxenham for all the work on our previous website which now forms the basis of this new site, with a wealth of historical detail and photos stretching back to the 1920s. Those familiar with HMS Pinafore will realise that additional music from other G & S operettas has been cleverly woven into the score of this version. The added material and its source is as follows:

A Disagreeable Man is taken from “Princess Ida” Prelude to Act 2 Hornpipe is from “Ruddigore” The Roulette Song is from “Grand Duke” In Sailing o’er Life’s Ocean Wave is from “Ruddigore”, but the middle section is from “Princess Ida” Nothing Venture, Nothing Win is from “Iolanthe” Pinafore Megamix owes something to The Beatles without a doubt!

About NODA Patron: The Lord Lloyd-Webber

The National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA), founded in 1899, is the main representative body for amateur theatre in the UK. It has a membership of some 2400 amateur/community theatre groups and 3000 individual enthusiasts throughout the UK, staging musicals, operas, plays, concerts and pantomimes in a wide variety of performing venues, ranging from the country's leading professional theatres to village halls. Members have access to a wide range of benefits.

NODA is divided into eleven national Areas, each headed by an Area Councillor who sits on the Council (the ruling body of the Association), supported by a network of Regional Representatives and other volunteers. These volunteers are the vital link to the grass roots of the Association, the amateur theatre companies themselves. The Association is administered from its Headquarters in Peterborough, with a knowledgeable and friendly staff able to deal with virtually any enquiry relating to amateur theatre.

There is a broad spectrum of ages involved with amateur theatre nationwide, from a burgeoning number of youth groups to adult companies, which meet the needs of all levels of both performers, whether dramatic or musical, and enthusiasts involved backstage, front of house or in administration.

CODY FARNBOROUGH AMATEUR OPERATIC SOCIETY

A BRIEF HISTORYCody Farnborough Amateur Operatic Society is a charitable organisation, which has raised over £60,000 for local charities in its long history. Formed in 1920 originally as the RAE Dramatic and Operatic Society, its first musical production was an operetta with a Chinese theme, “The Golden Amulet”, which was performed in the old RAE Concert Hall. Sadly proving uneconomical to maintain, this was demolished in 1929.

The Society was lucky enough to be granted the use of the Farnborough Town Hall until 1940, when it was taken over completely as a Civil Defence Centre. During this period, the association with the town of Farnborough grew to the extent that in 1935 the Society was reconstituted as the ‘Farnborough and Royal Aircraft Establishment Amateur Operatic Society’.

With the loss of the Town Hall in 1940, the Society was again without a home but a saviour appeared in the unlikely person of Mr Garcia, the lessee of the Theatre Royal, Aldershot. During the very first production (“The Mikado”) the Air Raid Warning sounded and Pooh-Bah kneeling before the Mikado said ‘Your Majesty, I have to announce that the sirens have just gone off’. The audience responded with one of the most prolonged rounds of applause the Society has ever received. Needless to say the show went on!

The large stage of the Theatre Royal enabled the Society to expand its repertoire of musicals, with an average of 5,500 people seeing each production, and it was with some regret that the Society had to say goodbye to the Theatre Royal at the end of the war. However, the new RAE Assembly Hall became available in 1944 and the Society returned to its original home. This ushered in a long period of stability when the Society staged a wide range of shows, many of them quite ambitious for such a small stage.

1973 saw the transfer of productions to the Princes Hall when it opened in Aldershot, offering a much larger hall with a big stage and auditorium.

In more recent years, the Society has performed critically acclaimed shows such as Kurt Weill's “Street Scene”, “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “Crazy for You”, “Sweeney Todd”, “Chess” and “Copacabana”, which won the Society its most recent NODA (National Operatic and Dramatic Association) Award for Production Excellence.

Today the Society enjoys the patronage of QinetiQ (formerly DERA). In 2001 the members decided that it would be appropriate to change the Society’s name to ‘Cody Farnborough Amateur Operatic Society’ in order to reflect its continued links with its historical home.
