STUDENT LIFE Page 02

Teen Trouble: LicensesBy: Alyssa Casey

Continued from front page/ When we

turn 1.5, we are pressured into the world of driving.

Whoever has their permit the soonest is coolest.

That’s the way our social environment works. But not

all of us have the resources or parents to make all of

our driving dreams come true. Some of us won’t get

their licenses till they are 18 or even beyond.

Assuming that you are on track for getting

driving privileges, there is a box full of hoops to jump

through. First of all, there is the matter of figuring out

how you want to do drivers ed. There are two main

options out there: online or in-class. I personally did

in-class but most teens opt for the online classes

rather than going to an actual class during vacation

days for a whole week.

Now, assuming you have that completed,

the next challenge is getting your permit. Don’t let

anyone fool you; you do need to study for the test. At

the same time, though, don’t freak out too much. You

can miss a total of 8 questions.

Assuming you also pass the test, (as you

can see there is a lot of assuming), you may be

thinking, “Yay! I get to drive now!”. Well this

assumption is sadly false. Next is behind the wheel

and you are technically not allowed to drive anything

without taking your first behind the wheel class. You

need a total of three.

So now let’s assume you’ve gotten that

done. Joy. Now is the waiting game. And yes, it does

feel like forever. You have to wait 6 months to move on

in the driving game. But hang in there! This amazing,

time wasting journey is about to be over.

Just kidding. I lied and the reason is that

you now have to deal with the DMV. Now keep in mind

that, up to this point, you have been born into ideal

situations. You have a car and willing parents and

money etc. Just keep that in mind.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL OF YOUR

PAPERWORK IN ORDER TO TAKE THE BEHIND THE

WHEEL TEST AT THE DMV.

I cannot stress that enough. They WILL

NOT let you take the test without EVERYTHING.

Moving on.

Now all that’s left is to take the test. It

really isn’t that big of a deal. By this point, you should

be pretty comfortable driving. Just remember that the

DMV makes every situation a pain in the butt.

So now you have your license. Believe me

when I say there are going to be A LOT more

challenges relating to driving in the future. BUT… at

least you now have an identification card to show for

all your hard work.

Charitable Titans Contribute toPennies for PatientsBy: Alicia Leigan

Continued from frontpage/ The main

purpose of Pennies for Patients is to raise funds to find

cures and therapies for diseases like leukemia and

lymphoma.

According to Austin Molina, an ASB member, the school

has been doing this

for at least four years.

The money goes to

benefit The Leukemia

& Lymphoma Society.

Since 1994, the

Pennies for Patients

program has collected

millions of dollars in spare change from schools across

the country.

Elementary and middle schools participate in this

contribution as well. According to the official Leukemia

and Lymphoma Society website, in the past sixteen

years, kids have raised more than two-hundred and

eleven million dollars for the advancement of blood

cancer research.

Teachers tend to get competitive and see whose class

can get the most money because traditionally the class

that collects the most change wins a catered lunch

party.

First Ever Drum Line CompetitionBy: Kirk Sullivan

The air of suspense fills the body. The people

wait in anticipation. Four o’ clock starts the beginning of

the show. The bangs get louder and louder. The gym

rattles as the first Drum Line performs.

Our Titan Drum Line had their first

competition on Saturday, February 9. Our Titans took

third place with a score of 70.35 out of 100. Torrance High

School took second place with a score of 72 out of 100.

West Ranch High School took first place with a score of

75.15 out of 100.

There were nineteen schools that performed.

Seventeen high schools, one middle school and one

elementary school. Each group got their own spot on

campus to warm up. Each school got nine minutes to set

up their equipment in the gym, perform, and tear down

their equipment before the next group came on. The

show went smoothly with no problems.

Last tuesday, the Varsity Boys’ Soccer, and

League Champions, played a game at Valencia High

School. The varsity champions were ready to play as

they won with a close score of 2-1.

Starting the first half, the team was as pumped up like

never before. Not too long into the first half, Temescal

scored with a lead of 1-0. Almost into halftime, Valencia

comes back and scores to tie at 1-1.

During half time, the boys got some rest and took

some time to refresh, going into a team huddle with

Coach Dool, where they wer getting some advice and

getting energy. Going into the second half, with more

energy, the boys come back strong and play hard. This

gots Temescal another goal, making the score 2-1. With

Valencia fighting and the time running out, the game

finally ends.

The Champions keep going strong! With another

victory, the boys will go to the semi- finals and hopefully

win C.I.F. About the victory, Coach Dool says, “I think the

boys played great. It was really windy and cold, but they

played as well as they could considering the weather.”

This week, on February 15, the Varsity Boys Basketball

team competed in the quarterfinals for CIF. The Titans

lost to Damien 32-62.

During the entire game the Titans trailed behind

Damien. During the first quarter, Damien scored 19 points

to Temescal’s 3. The gap only widened as the game went

on, with Damien outscoring Temescal 14-5 in the second

quarter, 15-13 in the third and 14 to 8 in the fourth.

With this loss, the season ends for the is.Titans, who

finished with a record of 14 wins to 16 losses. This was

one of the most successful seasons that the Titans have

had in years, and this was hardly lost upon the players.

“I'm proud of my team for taking us this far in cif, I

couldn’t ask for a better year than with those guys.” says

senior Adam Johnson. And how true it is.

"That’s who Jerry Buss was. He cared about all his

players not just on the court but off the court as well --

as men, as people." Earvin Magic Johnson recalled at the

Memorial for the late Dr. Jerry Buss, owner of the Los

Angeles Lakers, that

undoubtedly he was

the man of the people.

He died at the age

of 80 years old (1933-

2013) on February

18th, 2013. He had

been suffered from metastatic sarcomatoid prostate

cancer in the 15 months leading to his death. Although

his cancer was listed as the second cause of death; his

first cause of death was Kidney failure.

Jerry Buss didn’t start his days as head owner of the

Los Angeles Lakers that would win 16 championships to

this day. He graduated from the University of Wyoming,

earned a doctorate in physical chemistry at the

University of Southern California, where he ended up

teaching there in the late '50s.

He launched his career in real estate with in 1959 and

twenty years later, Buss purchased the Lakers, the Los

Angeles Kings, the Forum and a 13,000-acre ranch for

$67.5 million.

At his memorial, which was held at the Nokia Theater,

many of the “Greats” spoke about the life of the amiable,

self-less, and dedicated Dr. Jerry Buss. From Jerry West,

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Phil Jackson, to Shaquille O'Neal,

Pau Gasol, Pat Riley, Kobe Bryant, and Magic Johnson. The

memorial had a complete package of every emotion.

Buss’s friends and family were able to celebrate the great

days when Dr. Jerry Buss lived in success.

Coach Collins, head coach of Temescal’s wrestling, said,

“We did well but we didn’t reach our goal. We wanted a

three-peat. We still played good. Some kids even set new

record.” They won the last two years but not this year. He

said that they didn’t practice enough in their off season

and they could’ve worked harder. Ryan Coon was one of

the varsity players that made it to CIFs. I asked him how

he think him and his team did this season and he said,

“We did really well. We qualified 3 for Masters so we did

better than the past years.”

Adrian Navarro also went to CIFs. He said his favorite

part of this year’s wrestling season was going through

hell with all his teammates since it made them closer. He

just loved to bond with his team.

Project Glass:Google’s NewestAdvancement in CyborgTechnologyby Hayden Gordon

The dreams of becoming a

fully-fledged cyborg are finally coming to

fruition with the newest announcements

from multi-

billion dollar

technology

company, and

everyone’s

favorite search

engine Google

about their

newest

augmented reality glasses.

The technological eyewear began testing in

spring of 2012, and was shown off at Google

I/O (Google’s yearly conference) where the

glasses were demonstrated being used for

skydivers, mountain bikers, etc. Recently,

Google has been showcasing the glasses

more, announcing that the developer

version of the glasses would be released in

early 2013, and that the consumer release

date would be by the end of 2013.

A contest has been announced which

allows people to get their hands on a pair

of these glasses by submitting a letter

entailing what they would do with the

technology if they were to receive it. Only

3 luck people will be chosen, depending on

how good their letters are.

The project glass idea I think is half baked,

and impractical. First, who wouldn’t be

embarrassed

wearing some

unflattering

lenses with a

metal frame

that has a clip

on that makes

you look like

something out

of Star Trek. Now that it has been

announced that the glasses will come

equipped with voice commands, it only

intensifies that embarrassment. Imagine

you are walking into a store, staring at

random objects and saying “Search” over

and over again because the glasses are

irresponsive.

Although Google glasses are a cool idea,

and are very innovative, I just do not see

them being practical or popular with the

masses. Sure I could be wrong; everyone

thought the iPad was stupid before it was

released. However, I’m sure these glasses

will be just another footnote in the

technological history books.

Is that love in the air oris that just the zombies?By Crystal Morales

Continued from front page/

Told from the perspective of the zombies, is

the story of R (Hoult), a young zombie who

falls for a human survivor (Palmer), much

to the chagrin of her father (Malkovich). It

is a darkly funny romp, making jokes to

contrast the gruesome imagery.

While at times trite and

predictable, it fulfills its duty as both a

romantic comedy and a zombie flick. Hoult

gives a very sympathetic performance as R.

He is your typical young adult, dealing

with a crush and socially awkward

situations, with just the little problem of

being a zombie. I would highly suggest this

lighthearted take on zombies.

China Military Hacks USCompanies?By: Arielle Tripp

Last week the Chinese military

were accused of hacking activities against

the US industries and widespread cyber-

theft all over the world; but how true were

these allegations?

According to The New York

Times, known Chinese hacking groups

such as the “Comment Crew” or “Shanghai

Group” have been traced back to doorsteps

of the military unit’s headquarters. The

unit is located on the outskirts of

Shanghai, in a 12-story office tower being

to the People’s Liberation Army.

The attacks have brought into

question the fundamental relationship

between Beijing and Washington. While

some are saying that the cyber hacking has

been occurring independent of the Chinese

government, others argue otherwise. In an

article titled “Putting China’s ‘Hacking

Army’ into Perspective” by TIME Magazine,

China’s activities were labeled as cyber-

warfare.

Shocking, right? Though not

surprising, this sort of spying and military

espionage is nothing new.

Former OlympianAccused of AttemptingMurderBy: Eduardo Flores

Former Olympian Oscar

Pistorius killed his girlfriend at his house

on Valentine's day. Oscar Pistorius was on

drugs before this accident happened.

Allegedly, he heard a noise from the

bathroom, and shot his girlfriend, thinking

it was a burglar.

Pistorius was facing up to 15

years - life sentence but was bailed out on

Friday. The court wasn't able to keep him in

jail because they did not have enough

evidence to keep him in jail. Pistorious still

has to go to court for trial and won't be

able to leave South Africa.

Pistorius is a famous runner

who is nickname as "Blade Runner" when

he competed on special carbon fiber blades

in place of more traditional prosthetic

limbs. He was born missing bones in his

lower legs, and doctors amputated his legs

below the knees when he was 11 months

old.
