# of SQL Server VMs
SQL Server Transactions per minute(TPM) on VMware Cloud on AWS
Testing environment• 4-node SDDC. Each node has 2 Xeon
2.3GHz CPUs, 36 physical cores, 72 logical processors, and 512GB RAM
• Guest OS / application: Windows Server 2016 / SQL Server 2017
• SQL Server Database VMs: 8 vCPU, 32 GB RAM
• HammerDB parameters: 1000 warehouses (100 GB database) per SQL Server VM
Testing Result• A 4-node SDDC instance is able to
sustain 6.7M SQL Server Transactions Per Minute (TPM)VMworld 2018 Content: Not for publication or distribution

Applications Are CRITICAL
Prolonged Outage Not Acceptable
Service Continuity is Non-Negotiable
Cross-Platform Relocation is Complex
High Failure Rates
Native Application Formats Not Easily Portable
Each Application Requires SPECIAL Handling
Application AND Platform Experience Required
Can Lead to Vendor/Platform “Lock-in”
External SME Resources Required
External SME Resources Expensive
Complex Planning
Iterative Testing and Validation Costly
High Back-out/Rollback Plans Failure Rates
Possible Service InterruptionApplication Re-factoring Cost and Duration of Move

More Scenarios: Licensing SQL Server on VMware Cloud on AWS
vMotion licensed SQL Server VMs from on premise data center to VMCW/o SA, customers cannot vMotion SQL server VMs from on premise data centers to VMC. With SA, customers can do that once every 90 days, because on premise data center and VMC are not within one server farm.
BYOL existing on premise SQL Server licenses to VMCW/o SA, customers cannot reassign existing on premise SQL Server licenses to VMC. With SA, customers can do that once every 90 days.
Use Site Recovery to protect on premise SQL Server workloads and recover them in VMCCustomers need to purchase the same number of SQL server cores licenses as on premise primary site for the secondary site on VMC.
VM-host affinityIn development. With vm-host affinity, customers don’t have to license all the hosts in the cluster. Customers can restrict SQL Server VMs to a subset of the hosts to save cost.
Small clusterIn development. Now the minimum is the 4 host. Customers need 144 core licenses to license the entire cluster, which is not cost effective to some customers. With 2-host or 3-host cluster, customers can save 50% or 25% of their cost.
Non-productionSQL Server has developer edition which is free for development and testing.
