What is a Wingman?
The term Wingman stems
from a time-honored tradition
within the Air Force. . . that
essentially says a lead pilot
will never lose his or her
Wingman. It’s a promise, a
pledge, a commitment. . .
Wingman Culture affirms that
each and every person is es-
sential to our mission.
U.S. Tinker Air Force Base,
Midwest, OK
“A child needs a grandparent, anybody’s grandpar-
ent, to grow a little more securely into an unfamiliar
world.”
- Charles and Ann Morse

What do you think of The Oilton Wingman?
In September 2012, The Oilton Wingman published the first edition of the e-bulletin for grandparents, "like extended family" members, and other allies of Oilton students. The goal of this project is to further
strengthen the Oilton community and support for our students. The Oilton Wingman has included: (1) what’s happening at Oilton, (2)
upcoming events and activities, (3) celebrations of Oilton student’s accomplishments, (4) information about new programs at Oilton, and
(5) thoughts from Oilton student’s about their extended family members.
The Oilton Wingman is one of three pilot sites for this research project being conducted by an Oklahoma State University student. The Wingman will continue to be published during the 2013-14 school year. Grandparents, extended family members, and other allies are invited to send comments, ideas, suggestions, or questions to:
[email protected] (Receipt of the e-bulletin is strictly voluntary and is created for those in any geographical area (not just Oklahoma).

Haylee Fletcher and Bryahna Zavala, both soph-omores, entered the Wilma Elizabeth McDaniel Poetry Contest and received $25 for Honorable Mention. Students competed against others from high schools in Lincoln and Creek counties. They were not limited to topic choice, but they were limited to 100 lines or less. Bryahna's poem was entitled "Ocean" and Haylee's was called "It's going to be alright." Haylee's poem is listed be-
low:
It's going to be alright
The world's crashing down on her shoulders; it's just too much weight.
She tries to pull it together, but it's too late.
Not knowing what to do, she cries herself to sleep at night.
When is the last time that things went right?
No more stress, worry free.
Why can't everyone let her be?
She's strong, but what happens when she begins to break?
There's only so much a person can take.
"It's okay," we have all heard it before.
I just don't know if it will anymore.
Deep in thought, all hours of the day.
Nothing helps, no matter what they say.
You got to learn to do things on your own.
'Cause in reality, you're all alone.
No one really understands what you are going through.
Don't let anyone try to tell you what you should do.
Sometimes, it's good to have someone there to listen.
Maybe they can point out something that you've been missin'.
I used to run to my family, they knew "best".
Now I have this aching pain in my chest.
So much has changed, which way do I go?
I'm messing up, and my grades are low.
I'll live your life, you live mine.
Then you can try to tell me everything will be just fine.
Closing herself off, she hides the pain.
She's trying to hold it in, but she's going insane.
I've heard it before, save the speech.
"It's going to be okay," they all continue to preach.
Hold me close and let me cry.
Always be here, never say goodbye.
Talk to me, don't be the same.
Know the real me when they mention my name.
I'll keep on pretending that everything is all good.
I'll remain silent just like I should.
