Welcome to Kenotes a publication for bars, taverns, restaurants and clubs selling the Ohio Lottery KENO game.

You can feel the anticipation as customers reach your doors to meet with friends, get a bite to eat and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere and fun only you can provide. And, it comes quickly this time of year, with the change in season, the start of football and fall and winter holidays just around the corner.

We’re ready too. Your sales representative is prepared to help your business get holiday festive, update your Winners Wall, and help your staff and Lottery ambassadors get up to speed on the Lottery’s current and upcoming offerings.

EZPLAY® Games are a popular option among Kenobars. Holiday EZPLAY® Games, including Santa’s Snowball, Snowflake Melt, Jingle Bell Bucks and more, are available starting Nov. 13 at the counter and through MP vending. They’re not here long; so, don’t delay in sharing the news with customers. We’ll have signage too you can use around your MP to alert your Keno-playing customers. Check out page 4 for more.

Ready for something new with EZPLAY® Countdown games? We’re recharging Countdown games by changing up the community groups to encourage faster play and more frequent jackpot hits. Learn more on page 9.

A big thank you goes to you, our Keno bar, tavern and restaurant owners, managers and wait staff, for making Lottery a fun part of your customers’ experience.

Let’s all have some fun together, create some happy memories and enjoy the season’s best.

Retailer Spotlight: Average Joe’s, ColumbusMoonlighting as a bartender turned into a fulltime job for Mike Porreca, who owns the Average Joe’s chain of bars and taverns in Columbus with business partner Paul Rockwell.

They built their first Average Joe’s in 2005, in the city’s Polaris retail district, from the ground up. With Mike’s background in engineering and his business partner’s skill in architecture, they did a lot of the work themselves. Average Joe’s became an Ohio Lottery retailer in 2008, soon after Keno started in Ohio.

Over the years, the business has grown to six locations around Columbus, with the latest opening in the fall of 2015. Average Joe’s employs more than 100.

Who are his Keno experts? While all his front line staff knows Ohio Lottery games, and especially Keno, his bartenders serve as Average Joe’s subject matter experts on all things Keno.

How has Keno grown? As an early adopter of Keno, there was high demand to teach the game to patrons. As Keno grew, so did his business. Today, he says it’s unusual that a bar doesn’t have Keno.

“It’s everywhere and people expect it,” he says.

How can Lottery sales be improved? He’d like customers to know that he sells all Ohio Lottery games outside of instants. That’s something he’d like to see communicated more widely and on more levels. He’s eager to take advantage of Keno and other Ohio Lottery game promotions and would like to know about upcoming opportunities a month ahead of launch. He’s ready to publicize the next Lottery promotion with other business activity on his in-venue TVs and on social media.

What’s next? With two kids in high school, he knows he is in the bar business for the long term. He’d like to open a new concept bar/tavern in a market outside of Columbus.

Mike says, to run a good operation, it all comes down to “service and attitude.”

What he’s noticed about his customers.A lot of people can’t sit still so they love trying (Lottery) games,” he says. His customers like giveaways and appreciate perks for play.

“They like the idea of getting something for free,” he says.

How does he help his Keno players?Mike tells his customers, and especially his loyal Keno players, about MyLotto Rewards® whenever he has a chance. He’ll show them how to download the Ohio Lottery app so they can start being rewarded for play.

Ready to load paper into your MP? Do this first. Remove the paper and adhesive off the end of the roll, removing one whole turn of the roll. Then cut the paper straight across, discarding the excess.

Why remove the end of the roll? Discarding the end of the roll removes the adhesive on the paper, which can damage the machine gears.

Start the loading processPlace the paper roll on the spindle. Make sure the paper roll comes in contact with the spindle base. This activates the sensor.

The paper roll should feed from the bottom up as shown. Pull the paper back, up and over the roller and metal plate. Open the green bar on the top of the paper mechanism by pushing it up and back. Once the green bar is lifted, thread the paper underneath the green bar. The paper should be flat on both sides. Once you can see the paper coming through, press down evenly on the green bar so both corners of the bar click closed.

The printer should now feed, cut and eject a piece of paper about four inches long. The paper is now properly loaded. If the paper does not feed, cut and eject, please reload the paper. Both the status and power lights on the side of the paper mechanism will be solid if the paper has loaded properly. Note: when feeding paper under the green bar, make sure the paper does not go past the guide that will feed it through the front of the printing mechanism.

Paper maintenance, including proper loading and unloading of paper and paper jams, is the top reason retailers call the Ohio Lottery’s technical call center.
