THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE And just like that summer arrived with gusto just in time for Silver Springs' Annual Auto Show at the Sandwich Fair-grounds. The heat didn't keep many away as, once again, the vendor area had rows upon rows of ven-dors with parts and items of all sorts. A nice "little bit of everything" mix of over 300 cars graced the wooded show field. As you are reading this, some of you are preparing for the Region's Spring Tour, hosted by the Waukegan - North Shore Chapter over-nighting in West Bend. I look forward to seeing everyone there. After traveling around Wisconsin, have your sights set on the Region Car Show at Can-tigny Park in Winfield to be held on July 22nd. We are looking for people to judge and help around the show. If you are available, let us know. All of your help is always appreciated. It is June, which means we are already halfway through the year (believe it or not). Pat Markert is retiring at the end of this year and that also means that we have six months to go before a new Sidelights Editor needs to take the helm. This is a perfect opportunity to learn from someone who has done so well with Sidelights, as she is willing to train the new person during the remainder of the year. This is a prime opportu-nity for someone who has not been an Editor to learn from one of the best. If you have the inter-est, please contact Pat or me. See you further down the road,

Chris

We Don't Need No Stinking Signs Tour

By Andy Voss A group of Silver Springs adventurers en-joyed a great road tour on Sunday, May 6, 2018, taking some "less traveled" roads from Sandwich to Romeoville, Illinois. We were joined by a con-tingent of fellow cruisers from other chapters of the Illinois Region of the AACA. As always, we were guided by an excellently written itinerary by the one and only Chris Schurrer that included such noteworthy directions as "turn right at the bent street sign". Highlights of the trip were motoring down part of old Route 66, and stopping to view the Jordan Beller Museum in Romeoville, Mr. Beller is one of the leading experts on 1920 and 1930 era Ford cars and trucks. He talked with great ex-pertise and passion about his extensive collection of acquired vintage vehicles. He also has an out-standing library of Ford-related literature and manuals as well as a large workshop filled with tools, machinery, and an enormous collection of spare parts. This museum is a definite "must see" for any serious classic car buff. The final highlight was lunch at the his-toric White Fence Farm which also has a collec-tion of antique cars and a petting zoo. We ate too much chicken, but it sure was good!

Andy Voss, Jordon Beller, and Ruben Taylor in-spect the wooden interior and floorboards of a 1929 Model A

Ruben Taylor, Jim Wiltse, Lee Nelson, John Medgyesi, and Al Matison ask Jordan some tough questions on engine components on a 1932 Model

Jordon's workshop. "What we got here son is stuff."

Lee Nelson, Al Matison, and Ruben Taylor look at a rare advertisement for a Model A Truck spe-cifically for laundries.

Happy Flag Day!

More Good Auto History... 1914 Model T Ford Station Wagon By: Ed Shell, Thornton, PA

May 31, 1927, the last Ford Model T rolled off the assembly line. It was the first affordable automobile, due in part to the assembly line proc-ess developed by Henry Ford. It had a 2.9-liter, 20-horsepower engine and could travel at speeds

up to 45 miles per hour. It had a 10-gallon fuel tank and could run on kerosene, petrol or ethanol, but it couldn't drive uphill if the tank was low be-cause there was no fuel pump; people got around this design flaw by driving up hills in reverse. Ford believed that "the man who will use his skill and constructive imagination to see how much he can give for a dollar, instead of how lit-tle he can give for a dollar, is bound to succeed." The Model T cost $850 in 1909, and as efficiency in production increased, the price dropped. By 1927, you could get a Model T for $290.

"I will build a car for the great multitude," said Ford. "It will be large enough for the family, but small enough for the individual to run and care for. It will be constructed of the best mate-rials, by the best men to be hired, after the sim-plest designs that modern engineering can devise. But it will be low in price that no man making a good salary will be unable to own one - and enjoy with his family the blessing of hours of pleasure in God's great open spaces."

CURIOUSER &

CURIOUSER Editor: I found these inter-esting thoughts in the Novem-ber 2015 newsletter from the Saginaw Valley Region and thought I would share them with you. The average person’s left hand does 56% of the typing. The microwave was invented after a researcher walked by a radar tube and a chocolate bar in his pocket melted. There are only 2 words in the English language that have all five vowels in order - abstemious and facetious. Winston Churchill was born in a la-dies’ room during a dance. Women blink nearly twjice as much as men. Your stomach has to produce a new layer of mu-cus every two weeks; otherwise it would digest itself. Tigers have striped skin, not just striped fur. The cruise liner, QE2, moves only six inches for each gallon of diesel fuel that it burns. The winter of 1932 was so cold that Niagara Falls froze com-pletely solid.
