    New Membership Applications for April

    Donna Schauer, Hastings, MN

Joe & Lindsey Maceij, Cambridge, MN

    From the Editor

As I was preparing the submissions for the April

Newsletter this month I found myself holding a

photo in my hands that was taken in 1955 of

Don Sandberg and his great old dog. I was 3

years old that year… I can‟t tell you how hon-

ored I felt to be touching this cherished photo of

their HOF dog…DC Kaposia‟s Firebird (HOF).

The letter to the Editor that Betty Sandberg had

sent along with the photo was like a look into

the history of our breed and the history or our

club. We are blessed to have these “Old Timers”

still around and willing to share with us our His-

    tory.

We are working to recapture some of that rich

history…Mary Morris is attempting to restore

our Historical Archives. We used to be the Par-

ent Club. We need to find that history and pre-

serve it. If you have any little tidbit of that infor-

mation please give it to Mary Morris or contact

someone and pass this on to her.

Another suggestion by way of our Vice Presi-

dent, Karin Greeman, was to do features of our

old members Foundation Bitches and Founda-

tion Studs. If some of you “Old Timers” would

share with us the photos of your Foundation

Stock we would love to feature them with an

    accompanying article.

I for one am a pedigree geek, and love to in-

dulge in historical chatter with the Old Guard”

about the foundation dogs in our breed. I think

Karin‟s suggestion is a great one, and hope that

you „all will share with us some of your kennels

    rich history.

  • Letter to the Editor

I enjoyed the “Letter to the Editor” in the last newsletter, the writer talking about the “Good Old Days”.

At age 86 I am a German Shorthair person from the really “Good Old Days”! Don and I bought our first GSP in 1952, our sec-

ond in 1954, our first litter in 1956.

Our small club was the Parent Club then – the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of America, Inc. Don was Secretary of the club

then and everybody worked putting on fun trials and two licensed trials a year, as well as a Specialty Show. All trials were foot-

handled – the only people on horses were judges and field marshals.

I can tell you the circumstances which gave permission to an owner handler to ride his horse, thereby opening the door for other

    clubs to allow horse-handling.

Our field trial grounds were at Fort Snelling – wonderful grounds. Ben Olson was in charge of the food tent and chili was a fa-

vorite, along with hot dogs and hamburgers.

Yes we had fun! A whole new life was opened up for Don and me – that first dog of ours was purchased for $75. From Joe and

Maggie Deiss of Oak-Crest Kennels – a solid liver that became our foundation sire, Field Ch Kaposia Chief of Oak-Crest, CD.

Next addition was a true “natural”, who became a Dual Champion before 3rd birthday – the 14th Dual Champion in the breed –

Dual Ch Kaposia‟s Firebird. Similar bloodlines as Chief, the proven German line Winterhauch – Schwarenberg . In our breeding

program we stayed right in that line, a very successful one, all down through the many long years.

My last two Shorthairs died a couple of years ago but I Co-own a young bitch doing very well out east – Grand Ch Laden

Field‟s Mighty Wind kaposia. By now she has probably earned her final leg for her JH. She was bred and is Co-owned by Bruce

    Ladenheim from Jarrettsville, MD.

Incidentally “Grand Ch” is a new title AKC has allowed. The “Grand” depends on number of dogfs defeated in shows once the

    dog has become a Champion.

Cinder is from an all-Champion litter and looks like she has come right out of Kaposia Kennels.

Dan and I “retired” to Big Hanging Horn Lake n Carlton County about 24 years ago – He died 9 years out on our deep, clear

lake fishing. I still spend most of the summer in the lake swimming or on the lake in my canoe doing work for the lake associa-

tion, Also still singing in local groups and church, still writing a column for local paper, still doing road trash pickup on High-

    way 13 (since 1991).

I live with two “family” elderly cats and 6 hens that are the pets and provide me with wonderful “Organic” eggs.

I might be the last survivor from the early 50‟s!

The Premium includes all needed information including the lunch and dinner menus. Please note that on Sunday night

we will be catering in dinner from Q-Fanatic BBQ in Champlin, MN. As my portly figure might suggest, I have been

frequenting this fine establishment since shortly after it opened. It is some of the finest eats anywhere in the cities in

my opinion. It has been featured on Food Networks Diner, Drive-Ins, and Dives show and earned many awards and

praises. For this dinner I will be needing reservations and payment prior to Friday night of the 27 th so I can make sure

we order enough food. You may either catch me at the trial or send in your RSVP and dinner money with your entries.

I will confirm via email the receipt of your entries.

    Banquet Report:

A big thank you to everyone who attended the 2010 annual awards banquet and helped make it an enjoyable evening. Julie

Thate did a great job with the awards (and reading those names)! Russ was there to congratulate everyone and hand out the

awards. Special thanks to Dick, Karin, Jackie & Erica Greeman who helped with set-up, picture taking, selling tickets and

the donation of dessert. We had 4 large tables of donated items for the silent auction and raffle tables. Dan, Brian, Dick,

and Clark sold tickets for the raffle items & cards; while Lisa Van Beusekom collected payments for the silent auction. It

was nice to see some of the “old” members and meet some of the new ones. The one drawback was the disappointing food

but overall I think the banquet was a success. Thanks again to everyone for attending, bringing donations & helping out and

congratulations to everyone who earned an award!

    Sincerely,

    Janelle Elfstrand
