The Lipout The Official Publication of The Club at Apple Mountain
From the President
Jay’s Viewpoint
By Jay Toolson
I want to give a huge thank-you to the 2016
board, Bud Collins, Wayne Duty, John O’Shea, Mark Berscheid and a very special thanks to
Steve Jenkins who has been extra helpful in putting together this year’s activities. Every-one has done a super job, and they all deserve
the Club’s thanks. Additionally, there were 8 committee members that either helped organ-
ize or took on the responsibility to organize
many of this year’s activities.
Your golf club has put on 16 monthly tourna-
ments that included 3 championships, 4 NCGA qualifiers and 3 extended match-play tourna-
ments. In addition, there were 5 away events, Yocha Dehe, Carson Valley, Catta Verdera, Coyote Moon and Tahoe Golf Club. All these
events coupled with the 50 or so Tuesday Ball Toss mini tournaments, gives us a total of
over 70 golfing events for the year. This easi-ly makes our club the most active club in the
NCGA.
If you are a golfer, at any level, you are wel-come to join in the fun we have planned for
next year. You will find a welcoming, non threatening group of people doing what we all like to do best. That is getting out in the sun-
shine, enjoying the social aspects of our golf-
ing community, and playing the game of golf.
I promise you, once you give it a try, you will be hooked for the duration. Happy golfing to
everyone!

Practice
T he Rules of Golf limit the areas and times
in which a player may practice. Permitted practice is substantially different in stroke play
than in match play. By rule, on any day of a match-play event, players may practice on the competition course prior to the start of their
round. Conversely, in stroke play, on tourna-ment day, players are not permitted to prac-
tice on the competition course prior to the start of the round, nor may they test the sur-face of any putting green on the course by roll-
ing a ball or roughening or scraping the sur-
face.
Why the difference in the two forms of play?
The reason has much to do with providing equal opportunity for all players. In a stroke-
play competition with many players all com-peting against one another, the players in the
first groups do not have as much of an oppor-tunity to practice on the course before their rounds, while a player who is to play later has
a much greater opportunity to practice on the course before the round. In match play, the
concern is only that the two players in the match have the same opportunity to practice as they are not competing against anyone oth-
er than themselves.
The penalty for violation of practice prior to the
start of the round is disqualification in both
match play and stroke play.
In match-play, once the players' stipulated
round has begun, they may not make a prac-tice stroke during the play of a hole. However,
between the play of two holes, the players may practice putting or chipping on or near the putting green of the last hole played, any prac-
tice putting green and the teeing ground of the next hole to be played. Players may not prac-
tice putting or chipping on any fairway. Prac-tice strokes may not be played from bunkers
or water hazards and practicing must not delay
play.
The penalty for violation of practice during a
stipulated round is loss of hole in match play
or a two-stroke penalty in stroke play. A couple of Decisions:
A hole is considered completed when the ball has been
holed , the next stroke conceded or the ball is picked up.
A stroke on a ball after the hole has been decided is not
considered a practice stroke.
Knocking a ball back to a player who has hit a wayward
shot is not considered a practice stroke.

Member/Guest Tournament
P robably the most significant thing about
this year's Member/Guest Tournament was the fact that it was played at all. Originally sched-uled for Oct. 22-23, two postponements later,
it was finally squeezed in on Nov. 5-6, a week
before the Player Appreciation event.
On second thought, the most significant thing was actually the post- tournament dinner. That
was the best meal we've had at Apple Moun-tain, bar none. Thanks go out to Julie for set-
ting it up and to Tanya for cooking it up so well. You go ladies!! I'm looking forward to the
Christmas party spread.
Back to … golf. The first day consisted of a
nine-hole skins contest on Saturday, followed by the main event on Sunday, Nov. 6th. Ap-proximately 20 players participated in the
skins game followed by appetizers in the Apple Mountain Grill. The Sunday shamble managed
to field eleven four-person teams with a shot-gun start to get everyone back at the same
time for that meal of the century.
The shamble format calls for all four members
of the team to use the best first shot on each hole. After that, each team member plays his
own ball until holing out. The team then rec-ords the best net score of the group as a score for that hole. Total low net for eighteen holes
determines the winner.
The results of the Sunday shamble found the team of Mike Williams, Bud Collins, Richard and Christi West finishing first with a net 49.
Second place went to the long-ball team of Pe-ter Mallinger, Ray Costley, Matt Dowd and Pete
Kuzmich, shooting a net 52. Nobody hit it far-ther than this team, but it was judicious use of handicaps that won it for team Williams. Wrap-
ping up the money winners: in third place with a net 53 was the team of Nate Humes, Jim
Cumbra Jr., Wayne Duty, and Bruce Nyham-
mer.
Congratulations to all these teams in making
shambles of the rest of us.
Following the awards for top event finishers, our mandatory yearly general meeting was
held to present the status of our club and to nominate individuals for the upcoming election
to the 2017 board of directors. As of this print-ing, Ron and Mary Ann Baker have joined the board for next year. After several years of ser-
vice, Wayne Duty will be taking his leave, and it looks like I’ll be following him. The rest of
the board will remain the same, with Jay, Bud, Steve and John returning.

NCGA TEAM MATCH
by Mark Lee
T he 2016 Team
Match playoffs are over, and our team match players feel as if we are actors in the 1993 movie, Groundhog Day. That movie cast Bill
Murray (outstanding golfer & caddy, by the way) as a TV weatherman who is stuck in a
time loop, repeating the same day again and again. Unfortunately for us, our 2016 playoff results were the same as those in 2015 and
2014.
In the Round of 8, our team faced Monarch
Bay Golf Club of San Leandro, a links-style course situated right on San Francisco Bay. We experienced an almost continuous 15-20
mph wind, so conditions were tough. Our team expected to do well at home, as the Mon-
arch Bay players wouldn’t be used to our hilly,
tight conditions.
It ended up being a
tight match. The team of Bill Bates &
Ray Costley won all six points in their match, as did the
team of Mike Dietz, Sr. & Gary Logan.
That gave us 12 points at home. On
the road, the team of Steve Dringen-berg & Jon Castillo
won five points in their match, while
the team of Mike Dietz, Jr. & Mark Lee won three
points. That gave us a total of 20
points and an overall 20-16 victory.
Next up in the semifinals was Stonetree Golf
Club, a private course in Novato, where we would play from the Black Tees - 6319 yards,
71.4 course rating, 137 slope. We knew
they’d be tough, as Stonetree had won the Saturday League Championship in 2012. The
winner of this semifinal match would go to the
finals in Monterey.
Once again, it was a very tight match. We
took 11 points at home, with Bill Bates, Ray Costley, Gary Logan, Mike Dietz, Sr., and Jim
Cumbra, Jr. logging points. Away, we were only able to scratch out five points, with Jon Castillo, Steve Dringenberg, and Mike Dietz, Jr.
capturing points. We lost the match 20-16, a disappointing result given we had entered the
playoffs with a strong team and much momen-tum. This is the third year in a row that our
team has lost in the semifinals.
Overall, 2016 was a very strong year for our 12-man team. We had quality play from 19
different club members. The top players this
year were:
Gary Logan: 6-1 in singles play with highest
total points per match
Steve Dringenberg: 5-1-1 in singles play with
2nd highest total points per match
Mike Dietz, Jr.: Undefeated in singles play at
6-0-2, with 3rd highest total points per match
In 2017, the Club is considering fielding
a Thursday team for the NCGA Team
Match. (Rules state that players may
only play on one team, either Satur-day or Thursday.)
There are several more members who
have expressed in-terest in playing in this fun competi-
tion. So, if you’re interested in play-
ing on a Thursday team in 2017, please contact one
of the Club Board Members.

Player Appreciation Tournament
The 2016 tournament schedule once again be-came a suggestion rather than a hard and fast
rule for the Player Appreciation Tournament. After only one date change, it was held on No-
vember 13th. (No promises, but maybe the last event of the year, the Cyder Cup, will go
off on December 6th. as scheduled.)
The tournament was composed of players who
have won events or shown outstanding partici-pation in the Club during 2016. It was an indi-vidual competition event with four flights, each
flight containing 8-9 players. The course was noticeably crowded, as another shotgun-start
tournament was scheduled at the same time. Although several of our groups merged into
sixsomes, they were still held up by the other tournament. There were many napping oppor-tunities between holes but no slow-play penal-
ties. A few people complained of loud snoring
while putting, however.
Between naps, there was some actual golf played, and here are the results:
To no one's great surprise, the A-flight cham-pion and overall tournament champion was Bill "Mountain" Bates, finishing with a gross 74.
(Congratulations Bill!)
Net winners in the A-flight were M.J. Baker at the top with a net 64 and Steve Dringenberg,
second with a net 69. In the B-flight, the net
winners were Jerry Marshall taking the top slot with a net 69, followed closely by Armando
Lizarraga in second at net 70. In a tie for third were Jim Cumbra Jr. and Ron Baker, both at net 71. The C-flight winners were Jay Toolson
grabbing first with a net 67. Finishing second was Ron Buchanan's net 69. (Welcome back,
Ron.) Third place in C-flight went to the wom-en's record holder, Jen Hayworth, at net 74. In the D-flight, on top was Larry Thornhill with
a net 68, squeezing out Del Mobley who fin-ished second at net 69, putting a secondary
squeeze on Dennis DeMoss, who finished third
with a net 70.
During the post-tournament meeting, various awards were handed out to recognize the
achievements of those players who excelled in various events throughout the year. The final awards honored the player of the year and
most improved player. Winning for the ump-teenth time in a row, the Player of the Year,
Jay Toolson took his place alongside Mt. Bates in the mountain range of champions. (Congratulations, Jay Toolson.) The Most Im-
proved Player award went to an up-and-coming mountain, Nate Humes. Clearly, retire-
ment suits the Nate Man. (Congratulations to
Nate Humes.)
But the night didn't end with the final awards.

Finally came the raffle. I didn't play golf that well, and I raffled even worse. Every year, our
annual game of chance shows its weirdness. Winners don't just win once, they win multiple times; and they all seemed to be sitting at the
same table with D-flight and major raffle win-ner, Larry Thornhill. At least Larry spent some
bucks. Dennis DeMoss spent $20 like me and won three times. That's some serious bang for
your buck. I guess you had to be sitting at the table of luck. Special thanks go out to Dennis Ringnes for giving his time and effort to ensure
that we had some great prizes for a super-duper raffle. Next year I'm sitting at that ta-
ble!
[NCGA Team Match continued from Page 4]
For the Saturday team, 2017 will see us try to
break out of our repeating “time loop,” and
make it once again to the Monterey Champion-
ship round, as we did in 2011. We take solace
in knowing that over the past three years in
total, we have been the most successful team
in the entire NCGA Saturday Team Match com-
petition. Yet, without a trip to Monterey and a
championship, that accolade rings hollow. Our
team members have a singular focus to rectify
that situation in 2017. As Bill Murray would
say, “We’ve got that going for us.”
