:<~~·t::;··~:~~~.:i·i~~:'~~~?l:t;~1l~~:;{~~ Les and Irene Hurlock

Les and Irene Hurlock stopped by the other day. Les just turned 80, even if he doesn't look or act it. He's looking for a project to do to keep himself from watch, ing the dreaded TV. What a wonderful hobby.

I have known the Hurlocks for 28 years. I bought my first Alfa from Les in 1977. They drove over in their bright red Giulia Super. It is the same Super Irene was driving every day when I met them. The car has over 400,000 miles on it now and still runs great. Les is the source for wonderfully engineered and machined spin on oil filter adapters. Les can be reached at [email protected].

All of a sudden there is a lot of interest in Supers. I could sell one a month if I could find them. Unfortunately, in the early '80s they were worth more as parts then as cars, so lots of Supers got parted out. I'm certainly guilty-my attic is full of Super stuff. Fortunately, I need the parts to keep my Super "Hooligan" on the road. Hooligan only has 342,000 miles on him. There is a Giulia Super Discussion group on the net hosted by Tad Bailey, <giuliasu, [email protected]>. I t is a great source for informa, tion and discussion on Giulia Supers. Craig Morningstar

Many of you will remember Craig as the former Public Relations Director for Alfa Romeo Inc. Craig was the man responsible for organizing the 75th Anniversary party hosted by Alfa Romeo at Laguna Seca in 1985.

Always a real Alfa guy, Craig has owned a 1900 Cabrio for more than· 20 years, intending at any

2 • JANUARY 2005

moment to start restoring it. Pinninfarina made only 84 of the Cabriolets, making them quite rare and desirable. In fact, desirable enough that the car has a standing invitation to Pebble Beach.

Craig has finally started restoring this treasure. He has also found out why you should keep mouse bait where you store your cars. Mouse urine is worse than salt at creating rust. The rockers and the spaces between the double floors were completely filled with nut shells! Needless to say it was lace in several spots after media blasting. Craig is being assisted in his restoration with advice from lots of interesting people. Craig knows everyone in the car world. Phil Hill told him not to chrome anything that wasn't chromed in the first place. Good advice. It will be interesting to see this car come together.

Craig doesn't know it yet but I'm going to put the arm on him to help me figure out how to get more young people involved in our club. He has a unique set of peo, pIe skills.

Giuliettas

Giuliettas are the reason why some Alfa nuts in Chicago formed this club in 1958. They did it to help each other keep their cars on the road. In '58, there was' n't much information available about the cars. What was available was in Italian and parts were hard or impossible to find. Mechanics willing to work on them were even more scarce. The ensuing years have treated us to a lot of tribal knowledge about these cars. Many of us long' time Giulietta owners are getting a chance to

pass the torch to a new generation of owners. Lew Rosenberger hosts a Giulietta discussion group <alfarome0750,[email protected]>. It is, in my opinion, the best and most focused discussion group on the net. At last count there are 500 + listers from all over the world. If they all have as many Giuliettas as I do-eight-that's a lot of Giuliettas. Judging by the prices these gems are fetching on eBay, their place among the most desirable classic sports cars is assured.

Some Small Tech Tips

1. I was at a swap meet a few weeks ago looking for those Alfa parts that are never there. I came across a

Classic '55 -'57 Chevy booth. There among the repro Chevy stuff was something familiar. I discovered that '55 }57 Chevy wiper arms are the same as a Giulietta Spider. Considering what NOS arms go for, the Chevy parts were a real bargain!

2. I was at the tire store a few days later to replace the tires I ruined when I totaled my Dodge truck. {I bought it back and am restoring it}. Just for fun, I asked the tire guy if he had a line on 155 x 15 tires? I expected the usual, "No, not in several years" answer that I always get. This time he said, "I can get you that size in a BF Goodrich Radial TA." The tires have raised white letters but can be mounted with the letters on the inside. 155 x 15s are the only size tire an old Spider will run without rubbing the front fenders. I'm glad to see them available again! $67 each mounted and balanced isn't too bad either.

3. Before you mount those new tires on your Giulietta you should consider painting the rims. The cor ... rect color is BMW Polaris Silver. A friend had a NOS wheel still wrapped in the original paper. We opened it and matched the color. Polaris Silver is perfect!

Have some fun with your Alfa and Alfa People today! Ciao,

BILL GILLHAM Il Presidente, AROC-USA

FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT Buon Anno Nuovo Alfisti! A quick request to ensure everyone has done so -

but each chapter needs to check Alfa Owner and the web site to ensure your chapter's contact information is complete and correct. Please direct missing information to SPOC (Single Point Of Contact) Jolene Justus a.k.a. the AROC Administrator. Jolene will update and fol~ low through to ensure the changes are implemented. If you've changed officers at year~end, make sure we've been updated!

Welcome to Deep South Alfa Romeo Club, Inc. covering Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama area. This group is working their way through the incorporation process and we look forward to adding a new chapter to the list!

Alfa Potlatch 2005 is quickly approaching and we expect convention previews to start in the next few Alfa Owners. Additionally, AROC .. USA has been contacted by Alfa Solo, the Japanese Alfa club. Bill is writing a USA club history and I have sent a welcome message to them for the convention! Some of you may remember

Terry and her son Tiger at previous conventions - this year they are trying to put together a group of Japanese enthusiasts to come to the US. In that light, if any of our members speak Japanese and will be attending the convention, please e~mail me so I can pass along your contact details to Terry.

I manage a global team that designs and operate contact centers, phones, web, and e~mail for our compa~ ny world~wide. My work took me to the U.K. and Hungary the week of Thanksgiving. This was my first European trip and following a long flight into Gatwick - two hours before I got on a three~hour bus ride to Milton Keynes - and as sleepy as I was, I was already Alfa hunting! I was disappointed that they weren't absolutely everywhere I looked - I think I'd been misled on the quantity. Finally about 20 minutes into my ride I saw one coming the other way down the MI. Then

another - but really I was disappointed. I'd hoped for swarms of Alfas around me.

My counterpart in the UK knows all I wear is Florida Alfa Club shirts; I coordinate shirt colors with pants to mix up the wardrobe. He's well aware of my addiction and as we rode together noticed my constant review of the roads so he joined in pointing out what I might miss.

On Thursday, we flew to Budapest, Hungary to review the site there and as we drove to the office in Buda, I saw more Alfas than the whole time I'd been in the UK. I really liked Budapest as well, so this looked to be a great segment of my trip. Finally through Pest, we crossed the Danube into Buda where our office was located. It used to be the old tram repair station, and being so important has power from three grids (n\ust keep the people moving!). The site has been renov~ted into new office space, and we were the first tenants. I

That evening we walked across the Danube to lour hotel in Pest and, of course, I was spying for Alfas, ~his time assisted by Mynhardt from Germany as well. As it turns out, Alfas are one of the company cars avail~ble for them, and the general manager had a 156! He also told me that Attila, one of our techs, was into Alfas and would be in Friday.

On Friday, AttHa finally arrived and someone point~ ed him out, so I introduced myself and pointed to the logo on my shirt. He did what he had come to the office to do, and then took me down to the garage to check out his car - a 147. I snapped pictures of the engine and body, then sat in the drivers seat and Attila threw me the key and said let's go for a ride! Being the shy type I am, I refused (YEAH RIGHT! - You're reading the wrong story ... ). OK, in reality I thought I'd drive it around the parking garage. Nope - the streets of Buda at lunchtime! Not knowing the laws or unique driving concerns, I was gentle with the car (didn't want any tickets) but did drive around downtown for about nve miles or so. Grin removal would have required surgery. Finally, I realized I still had work to do in the office, so I headed back to the office, driving parallel to lithe Danube! Let's see, Dear Journal .. what Chip did for lunch today .. drove an Alfa 147 in the streets of Buda and along the Danube! Huge Grins Huge Grins ... !

As I returned to the office, Tim and Mynhardt lbok at me and said, "Uh oh, what did you do?" They knew, but now I got to tell them!

Later, I met another Alfista as I caught sight of an Alfa Amore screensaver as I walked by an office. Turns out Balaz Biro is in the Hungary Alfa Club - Alfa Amore! So now we are exchanging e~mail. Needless to say I enjoyed the Hungarian leg of my trip. Like termites in Florida - Alfisti are everywhere! Ciao, Chip.

ALFA ROMEO MUSEO STORIeo

If a trip to Europe is in your future, a visit to the Alfa Romeo Museum in Italy should be on your itiner, ary. It is a very memorable way for an Alfa enthusiast to spend the day viewing the chronological history of Alfa Romeo. Take your camera!

The museum is located several miles Northeast of Milan, in the city of Arese. The Alfa Museum, along with the manufacturing and design facility, seem to be the largest industry in the area. So, find "Arese" on your atlas and the museum will be hard to miss. If driving by car, travel on "Autostrada dei Laghi" (Hwy. A 8) from Milan. Take the Arese exit and the museum is on the left, only a couple hundred meters away. The address is Via Alfa Romeo, 20020, Arese, Italy.

Public transportation can be taken from the Milan Metropolitana (subway). Use the Linea Rossa (red line) and stop at Molino Dorino where there is a public bus route that travels to Arese and goes right by the muse' urn gates.

A more efficient, but more expensive way to get there from downtown Milan, is to use the "Taxi" serv, ice. Check their rates before departing.

The contact persons at Museo Storico Alfa Romeo are Mr. Magro Antonio or Mrs. Nadia Cattaneo. Use fax # 011,39,02,9315564 to announce your intended visit and request additional details. A two week advanced notice is recommended. The local phone number is 02,93929303. Additional information is

available on the Alfa Romeo web sites including <www.museoalfaromeo.com>.

The official working hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm and again from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm. The museum is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, in addition to the entire month of August and December 23rJ thru January 6th•

In the May issue of Alfa Owner Steve Snyder sub .. mitted a brief article on "The Jewels of Touring" which described the Bonfanti Museum near Bassano del Grappa in Italy, featuring extensive examples by Carrozzeria Touring. Luigi Bonfanti,

namesake of this museum, was the second owner of this article's beautiful example of Touring's Alfa Romeo 1900 C Super Sprint Type IV.

Italian Sr. Ruggero Broglio had purchased this car new in 1956 for the sum of Lire 3.420.000. He eventu .. ally sold it to Bonfanti, of Museum fame. Bonfanti, who was later to be the president of the Alfa Club of Italy, became acquainted with Milwaukee .. based internation .. al businessman John Julien who expressed interest in purchasing the car. They agreed upon the sale price of 4 million Lire (approx. $2,000 then) and Mr. Julien picked up the car in Venice in April, 1978. He drove it across the continent and shipped it to England, then on the port of New York on Cunard Lines' Queen Elizabeth II.

10 • JANUARY 2005

Joseph Mirenda, also of Milwaukee, took ownership from Mr. Julien's estate in 1999. Along with the vehicle, Mr. Mirenda also took possession of various interesting original documents relative to the sale. Included is a "Foglio Complementare" (supplemental file) from the Automobile Club D'Italia, province of Venezia issued to the original owner; along with the original Carta Di Circolazione per Autovettura (Transit Permit for the Vehicle); as well as original sales invoices and corre .. spondence between Sr. Bonfanti and Mr. Julien. The most impressive piece of documentation is on large .. sized paper in a "foglio" (folder) and is from the American Chamber of Commerce in Italy with a large embossed seal and ribbons certifying that the sales cer .. tificate was properly translated from Italian into English.

A quick summary cannot do justice to the rich his .. tory of the famed "Carrozzeria" Touring Superleggara.

Having taken delivery in this country, avid car col .. lector and Alfista Mr. Julien had driven this beautiful

"vettura" in unrestored but excellent mechanical condi, tion. Its aluminum body skin had been in its "near", original color, an uninspiring light green. The Super version of this 1900 model was equipped with a 1975 -cc engine originally launched in 1954. Earlier models took part in several class races, always with good results.

Joe Mirenda, who also possesses a pristine 1964 Giulia Sprint Speciale, decided to fully upgrade the 1900's finish to a near,100 point state of perfection. Joe enlisted the assistance of master artist in metal (paint, wood, mechanicals) Brian Wentlandt of Cedarburg, Wisconsin. The results shown here speak for them, selves. Che Bellezza!! (What a beauty!) Brian was a tour de force who presided over all aspects of the metal work (into flawless aluminum), final red paint finishing, sourcing of miscellaneous new or NOS parts, mechani, cal upgrades, reupholstery, structural corrections, restor' ing its original wood, rimmed Nardi steering wheel, rechroming, etc., etc.

Historically, this particular vehicle was manufac, tured in 1955 with a "telaio" (chassis) number of 10081, and VIN# AR 130810097. 854 of these 1900 C Super Sprints were manufactured between 1954,1958, of which 248 of this model year and type were "dressed" in other designs by Boano, Ghia, Bertone, Pininfarina, and Zagato. Its cast iron 4,cylinder DOHC engine is typical of 1900 engines of that era. Its engine is rated at 100 CV at 5500 RPM permitted a 112 MPH top speed. Handling has a modem feel due to its independent coil, spring suspension. Both provide a sporting feel made

more enjoyable by the accompaniment of the music of its melodic exhaust system.

This 1900 C SS is exquisitely imposing in its new red "skin." the previous lighter color (which had been re~painted many years ago in Italy) never did justice to this vehicle. With its chromed wire wheels, tasteful chrome trim, and graceful Touring shape, it is really striking. Every angle is a treat for the eyes.

Upon completion of its restoration at Brian's shop, modestly named "The Paint Shop," a debut was hosted by the Alfa Romeo Owners Club of Wisconsin for Joe, Brian, club members, and friends on June 13, 2004. Accompanied by Moretti "Birra Italiana," Chianti and other red Italian wines, Biscotti, Italian dark roast Arabica coffee, and detailed discussions by Brian regard~ ing interesting aspects of his challenges and approaches, club members were entertained all afternoon in this relaxing but informative ambience in celebration of Joe's wonderful and beautiful "macchina Italiana."

Since its Cedarburg debut, Joe Mirenda exhibited it at the Wisconsin Club's well~attended ICAMS event in August of 2004. ICAMS is the "Italian Car and Motorcycle Show" celebrated now for three years and held at the festive site of the ultra modem (and ultra Italian) Italian Community Center near Summerfest grounds at Milwaukee's beautiful Lake Michigan shore. Top prize for "Best of Show" was Joe's 1900 C 5S! Incidentally, last year's top prize winner at ICAMS was Angelo Ramirez' beautiful dark blue 1974 Alfa Spyder .... also prepared by Brian Wentlandt earlier in 200l.

Joe Mirenda, as well as the author along with other Milwaukee~area Alficionados, were in attendance this year at Monterey's Concorso Italiano and the Pebble

Beach Concours d'Elegance. This is mentioned in light of Joe's subsequent enthusiasm for potentially exhibiting his beautiful vehicle at Monterey in 2005. This is to be heartily encouraged as it would be a real treat for West Coast "eyes" and other automotive friends from around the country.

Auguri, Giuseppe e Brian! Congratulations, Joe and Brian! "

A Fr sh Look at Nuvol

By Robert Newman

Pew would argue with the notion that Tazio Nuvolari was one of the five greatest racing drivers of all time; some would even say the greatest. But as the years

pass, there are a diminishing number of people who actually saw him race, so how can we really know? It is easy to par .. rot the books, of course, but most of them usually recite blow .. by .. blow race reports of the period .. some of which were flawed anyway .. and his results.

But what results! Nuvolari competed in 229 car races, won 57 of them including 16 Grands Prix, two Mille Miglias, two Targa Florios, two Tourist Trophies, the 1936 Vanderbilt Cup and put up 50 fastest laps. It was the same with motorcycles. Tazio ran in 124 bike races, won 39, scored 39 class wins and set 40 fastest laps. Before the Second World War, he was known as the fastest man on earth.

Why was he so successful? What was his secret? Was his driving technique really so different? What was he like as a person? Was he a womanizer? And what did his wife think of him?

To find out, Alfa Owner boarded its very own time machine and roared back across the years to "talk" to the men and women who knew Tazio Nuvolari well, even intimately; saw him race; raced against him or, like the rest of the world, simply applauded him from the roadside and stands as he blustered by. We wanted to know why this scrawny, five .. foot five .. inch tall Italian with the trademark long jaw worked his way into the all .. time top five, maybe heading it.

Giovan Battista Guidotti and Tazio Nuvolari won the 1930 Mille Miglia together for Alfa Romeo. "We were friends and I admired him greatly for his unique driving style," said Guidotti. "What was his speciality? Going over the limit in a controlled skid. Nuvolari always ran the engine at maximum usable revs. Before a comer, he quickly lifted his foot from the accelerator to exploit the engine brake, saving the brakes themselves, which had limited efficiency in those days.

"When he got to the comer he accelerated immedi .. ately, cadence braking to ensure they did not overheat. He heel and toed without ever creating wheel spin, which was the fashion in those days. The front and rear wheels were constantly parallel and he checked the highest entry speed of the others yard by yard, to be just visibly over the limit with his car, which was moving to the outside in a mild drift. But it was a drift he con .. trolled by sawing away at the wheel and blipping the accelerator. Thanks to the wheels being parallel, he could shoot out of the comer faster than anyone else and already be lined up for the next one."

Gigi Villoresi was another expert observer. "Tazio Nuvolari had a driving style that was unequalled: it was a lot different from the others'. I had occasion to observe him at the Circuit of Montanero in Italy. I was driving a 1500 .. cc Maserati and he passed me before a tight left .. hander. I followed him from 50 yards back and I had the sensation that, given his high speed, he would soon go off. But not a bit of it. He went into the comer in a completely different way: he had his foot hard down on the accelerator and the nose of the car pointing straight at the apex of the bend. Then he did a complete drift and in that way had the car perfectly aligned with the road, corner after comer.

"His style was unequalled and nobody was able to reproduce it. Anyway, you could only do that kind of thing with the cars of those days, due to their rigid sus .. pension, independent wheels and very narrow section tires, which were inflated to a high pressure."

Giovan Battista "Pinin" Farina, the great Italian car stylist, first saw Nuvolari race in that exuberant 1930 Mille Miglia, when Tazio is supposed to have switched off the lights of his Alfa Romeo 1750 so that he could

creep up on race leader Varzi, dash past him and win. Farina said, "It was always a spectacle when Varzi and Nuvolari were on the track, with their different driving styles: they were like night and day. Varzi maneuvered the steering wheel as if it were a compass, N uvolari as if it were a roulette wheel.

"Tazio went racing dressed like a Sixties beatnik. Achille, on the other hand, was always elegant in a sort of ceremonial driving suit and he always wanted his car polished.

"It is difficult to imagine two more different people.

16 • JANUARY 2005

Varzi seemed so reserved and Tazio the eternal boy. You should have seen Nuvolari with that courageous woman who was his wife, Carolina. They were like two happy schoolchildren," Farina concluded.

Ferrari's double F1 world champion Alberto Ascari not only won the 1954 Mille Miglia for Lancia, but also the first Nuvolari trophy, a gold tortoise that went to the fastest driver over the Mantua leg of the classic road race. Receiving his diminutive award, Alberto said, "I met Tazio way back, at the Grand Prix of Monza when Materassi, Brilli Peri, Borzacchini and Campari compet~ ed in the Alfa P2 as did my father, the great Antonio Ascari, if you will permit me to say so. I was only a kid at the time, but on the eve of the Grand Prix I was able to watch practice from Lesmo and studied the style of the drivers, measured their audacity. I loved the way they pushed themselves to the limit of the laws of physics.

"My idol at the time was, you've guessed it, my father. But one day, I noticed another man was greater than him: it was Tazio. And he had to be much better than all the others for a small boy to admit that anyone was better than his father. That tells you something."

In 1931, Luigi Arcangeli, who had competed against Nuvolari on motorcycles and in cars, loaned Tazio his riding mechanic for that year's Targa Florio. The person in question was a thin, pimple~faced young~ ster named Paride Mombelli, who was frightened out of his wits. Mombelli said after the event, "Mr. Nuvolari asked me if I was afraid of doing the race with him and he advised me to listen carefully to what he shouted every time he went into a difficult corner. When he shouted, I was supposed to throw myself under the dash~ board to protect myself in case he rolled the car. The

Page 19: THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE ALFA ROMEO … Owner 2005.1.pdf · m THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE ALFA ROMEO OWNERS CLUB ith re c I rll A Fresh Look at Nuvolari

fact is, N uvolari started shouting as he went into the first comer and stopped after he came out of the last. I never saw anything of the race."

Tazio's favorite cousin, Milada Nuvolari, now a sprightly 91,year,0Id, said recently, "He was always on the limit and the people adored him for that. He was even applauded when he lost a race and was able to per' petuate his legend even in defeat, because he always gave everything. Many tried to copy and explain his driving technique. Tazio shaved the kerbs tones and came within a millimeter of the straw bales, like clock, work. He was at one with the car: it seemed like he was pushing it with his arms and torso. He put his car into a corner like nobody else and exited from it faster than the others. He was always able to squeeze that little bit more from the engine. The car often broke; sometimes he had an accident. But he once said to me, 'Milada, as soon as I realize I can't keep the car on the road any' more, I am always ready to jump out. Never stay in a car when it is about to crash'. He was very agile."

Friends off the track, Tazio Nuvolari and Achille Varzi were at each other's throats on it. Early 20th cen, tury Grand Prix and double Targa Florio winner Felice

Nazzaro, saw them like this. "Analyzing them singly, they had two different characters, systems and methods that always led them to a victorious conclusion, when they did not experience mechanical or other trouble, of course.

"Tazio was all fire and daring. He lavished all his energy and immeasurable courage on every race. He tended towards one single objective: to be the domina, tor at the head of the pack, leading them all. His insu, perable battling spirit carried him up to an instant before the start of a race, then off he went on an unstop' pable charge towards full and unconditional success.

"Varzi was a great driver, perhaps less obviously so to the crowd than Nuvolari. He impressed the experts with the truly superior style he demonstrated on the track. In the few races that I attended, unfortunately as a specta, tor, I found in Varzi such a wide range of stylish finesse and tactics that he really impressed me."

Tazio's trusted mechanic and long' time friend Decimo Compagnoni, who also came from Nuvolari's hometown of Mantua, told a hair, raising story. He rode shotgun for the fearless little driver in the 1931 Circuit of the Three Provinces race, when Tazio beat a mildly

successful racing driver and future legendary constructor named Enzo Ferrari.

"Tazio and I had the Alfa 1750 and we were com, peting against the 2300s of Ferrari and Borzacchini. We started from Mantua on the Sunday morning and, while all the others knew the route perfectly, Nuvolari had not even been able to practice a single kilometer of it.

"Off we went and just outside a village called Porretta we took a comer, immediately after which was a railroad crossing. It was too late to brake. We slammed onto those infernal rails at 100 km/h and simply took off.

"The impact was so terrible that I was catapulted into the air and even the grab handles I was hanging on to broke off.

"I fell back onto the tail of the speeding car, with, out anything to hold on to. I managed to hang on just long enough for Tazio to grab my leg and pull me back into the cockpit with one hand, while he had the other on the wheel, correcting the mad zigzag of a line he was taking.

"But it did not end there. The impact with the rails had broken the accelerator spring. So we stopped, I tore off one of my sock susp~nders; fixed it to what was left of the spring and off we went. The suspender operated the accelerator, with m~ keeping it taut. It worked fine,

but that did not change the fact that we were pushing the situation to the absolute limit.

"Going up a steep hill, I shouted, 'This is where the 2300s will make us eat dust.' "

"Going down the other side, it was Nuvolari's turn. 'This is where we'll give them some dust to eat,' he hollered. And we charged on.

"Borzacchini retired with an engine problem and that just left Ferrari up ahead. We were 40 seconds behind him when we were 36 kilometres from the fin .. ish, but in the end we won the race."

Enzo Ferrari was to say later, "Tazio Nuvolari's driv .. ing technique remained, until the end, that of an instinctive prodigy at the limit of human possibility." This opinion was shared by Ferdinand Porsche.

In 1937, after Tazio had been asked to drive for Auto Union: it was Porsche, the great designer and sci .. entist, who told the directors of Auto Union. "I have never made a more appropriate choice in my life. Nuvolari is just the man we want to drive our cars." And when Nuvolari arrived at the company's Zwickau head, quarters to be introduced to his team mates, Porsche told them, "Gentlemen, Nuvolari has joined us: the greatest driver of the past, the present and the future."

Many years after Nuvolari died, his wife Carolina spoke of when her husband came home from the 1937

Vanderbilt Cup to Mantua after the death of their eld~ est son, 18~year~0Id Giorgio, "Tazio returned home and cried. It was the first time I had seen him cry like that. He forgot he was the fearless Nuvolari, the man who didn't believe in danger or death."

After that, Nuvolari focused all his affection on his younger son, Alberto, who would also die at 18 years old. Said Carolina, "Alberto became our only child. He had brown hair and the long, clean~cut face of the Nuvolaris. Tazio brought him home the most beautiful and expensive toys he could find on his trips. Pedal cars, rocking horses, huge boxes of Meccano, aeroplanes that actually flew. He came in with his arms loaded with parcels and went looking for Alberto."

But Alberto once said to his mother, "I can't stand it any more. I look into Dad's eyes and I see they are looking beyond me, searching for Giorgio."

Nuvolari was supposed to have had a roving eye and stories abound of him kissing beautiful girls as he gave them rides in his racecars. He gave presents to certain beautiful women, and played the fool for the entertain~ ment of others. Yet Carolina was convinced he was true to her. She said once, "Tazio was good, talented and never complained. The only thing that misunderstand~

ings arose over was jealousy. He received attention, honors and invitations from all over the world. He was always surrounded by famous people and beautiful

women. If I had not known my husband well, I would have gone mad. But I didn't, because Tazio never left himself open to criticism."

Milada saw another Tazio Nuvolari. "Women? I must admit they were a passion of the N uvolaris. I remember that once, after one of his many victories, I went to say hello to him at his hotel. I went into his suite and found it full of flowers. He understood my sur~ prise. Just a look between us two was communication enough. I said I would see him later. I had recognized the woman who was with him, a very sophisticated woman who was the wife of another driver. As I was leaving the hotel, I saw Tazio's wife Carolina going in. She was not supposed to be there, but perhaps she want~ ed to surprise him. I ran back to his suite, but Tazio remained calm. 'Wait here. As soon as Carolina arrives, tell her this lady is your friend and that the two of you have just dropped in to say hello'."

One woman of noble birth wrote to a friend in the mid~ Thirties, "There are three men I admire most, Michelangelo, Mozart and Nuvolari."

Tazio was under no illusion as to his own worth. A VIP foreign journalist arrived in Sicily to cover the 1931 Targa Florio and asked the Flying Mantuan to give

20 • JANUARY 2005

him a demonstration drive in his Alfa Romeo 1750 SS. Nuvolari bided his time until 2 a.m. one morning, when the telephone jangled in the writer's room and a rather pompous concierge drawled, "Mr. Nuvolari and his Alfa Romeo await you, sir." After he frightened the life out of the journalist with an exceptionally fast drive in the dark, the shaken writer asked Tazio why he had chosen such an ungodly hour for their outing. "Sicily is infested with bandits. Think of the ransom they could demand if they kidnapped the greatest racing driver in the world."

Enzo Ferrari once said of his mercurial driver, "Tazio was a newsmaker. Even when he moved to a foreign team, he never forgot he was Italian. I still remember him today, with his yellow racing jerseys and, in partic~ ular, the ribbon in Italian colours around his neck, which he kept in place with his gold tortoise brooch."

Although seriously ill, Nuvolari still decided to compete in the 1947 Mille Miglia in one of Piero Dusio's Cisitalias. Fans and journalists alike were moved to tears and one paper headed its story, "Thank you for this gesture, Tazio."

A year later, the ailing Mantuan immediately fell in love with a 2~liter barchetta, which Ferrari had built for the 1948 Mille Miglia, and the man from Maranello

Page 23: THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE ALFA ROMEO … Owner 2005.1.pdf · m THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE ALFA ROMEO OWNERS CLUB ith re c I rll A Fresh Look at Nuvolari

asked Nuvolari to drive it in the event. "Break the car," Enzo said. "Break it. If you are not able to destroy it, no' one will be able to pass you, not even the devil."

But the devil did not bother. He could see that, although Tazio was putting in one of the greatest drives of his life, the Ferrari was, indeed, self, destructing.

When Nuvolari retired, a nation wept for its sick champion. Vincenzo Florio, Sicilian motor racing pio' neer, inventor and organizer of the great Targa Florio road race, remarked, "I must say that Tazio possessed an indisputable superiority over everyone else, because when he decided to overtake another competitor at all costs or to cover a certain stretch of road, whether it was a straight or a series of tortuous corners, he put his foot all the way down and kept it there. He never lifted until he had achieved his objective. His arms and brain were able to dominate men and things.

"I had never seen Nuvolari race from close up, I had only seen him drive by," Florio continued, "until 1 saw him compete for the last time in the 1950 Palermo, Monte Pelligrino. I must say that, apart from being astonished by a driving style that was all his own, I noted the slowing of his engine, which was barely per, ceptible, at every corner as he used the engine brake. The thing that struck me most was that in many cor, ners, the front hub of his car was never more than a cen, timeter from the wall at the side of the road.

"N uvolari still holds the most amazing record for being the driver who had a non, stop, successful career throughout his sporting life: the record of having won the most races, and, finally, the exceptional record of having challenged danger for so many years with extraordinary bravery, but to have been able to end his glorious days in his own bed." "
