President’sPage... FordEngineTrivia BySteveStillwellYou may be tack sharp when it comes to the F-100 Y-Block, but are you up to speed on some of the “unique” engines Ford has produced over the years?

Here’s hoping you don’t stumble when it comes to the V-8 engines found in the 1954 thru 1956 Ford F-100s and cars too! The smaller of the Y-Block V-8’s is the 239 cubic inch engine featuring a cast iron crankshaft, intake and exhaust valves. It also featured low compression due to the use of cast aluminum pistons, but did feature a mechanical camshaft. This was the most popular V-8 engine found in the 1954 and 1955 Ford cars and trucks.

Next step up is the 256 cubic inch V-8 used only in Mercury vehicles and F-series Ford trucks. With a compression ratio of 7.5:1, it would run on very low octane fuel and still deliver 161 hp at 4400 RPM.

The 272 will have a more familiar ring to it as two versions were made available in 1955. The two barrel car engine featured 7.6:1 compression, producing 162 hp. The first of the four barrel V-8 272 cubic inch engines made 182 hp due to the 8.5:1 compression ratio. The ’56 272 was available with a stick or automatic transmission. More modifications were made to the 272 in 1957 which made it produce 192 hp!

Then came the 292 cubic inch Y-Block engine, first introduced in the Thunderbird and Montclair. All the 292’s were fit with a four-barrel carburetor in 1955 producing a stated 200 hp. This was Ford’s over-square engine having a bore of 3.75” x 3.30”. It lasted on the assembly line until 1964, but interestingly, Ford reduced its horsepower output to increase durability.

Now, on to the 312, the biggest displacement of the Y-Block Ford engines. Bore and stroke are 3.80” x 3.44”. Two versions of the engine were made with four barrel carbs, and an available dual exhaust. Here’s some real trivia for you. In 1957 the 312 Y-Block came with a factory option which enabled it to produce over 300 hp. A ’57 Bird fit with a factory Paxton supercharger brings big money at Barrett Jackson these days. Sorry, none were installed into Ford F-100’s.

Lincoln is Ford, so for your trivia needs, Lincoln’s housed 317, 341 and 368 cid V-8 through the mid fifties, producing over 400 ft-lb of torque to move those beasts!

But you knew all that. Did you know other Ford engine displacements include 221 cid, 260 cid, 289 cid, 289 HiPo, 302 cid, 302 Tunnel Port, 302 Boss and 351 Windsor in the 990 degree V-8 family? For the bigger and heavier cars of the 1958 Mercury lineup, Ford produced a MEL Series featuring engines with 383 cid, 410, 430 and 462 cubes in 1966. Imagine mom’s car fit with 3-2’s, dual exhausts and skinny tires.

In 1958, Ford introduced the FE Series of V-8’s and with 110 octane at the pumps installed 9.5:1 compression. In 1960, the T-Bird received a 352 cid engine or a HP version fit with an aluminum intake which made 360 hp. Ford trucks came equipped with a 360 cid engine with lower compression and heavier rods, crank and camshaft components for more durability. A 361 cid version was also produced soon after. Gas was cheap, so no big surprise that the Detroit performance race drove Ford to introduce the very popular 390 cid engine which lasted from 1961 thru 1976.

If you thought that was a big engine, hold on to your shorts. Ford Motor Company began installing the 406 cid engine in ’62 Fords while the Mercury beast featured the massive 410 V-8 used in 1966-67. What the heck, it was time to debut the 427 cid V-8’s featuring power levels determined by Low Riser in 1963-64, then a Medium Riser 427, yes a High Riser 427, a 427 Tunnel Port and the famous 427 SOHC. Not to be outdone in the NASCAR races, Ford produce the 428 cid engines beginning in 1966! The police interceptor version made 360 horses and featured an aluminum intake and high-pro cam to stay in front of the 428 Thunderjet and 428 Marauder. Ironically, the 428 Cobra Jet had the same intake, but made of cast iron, not aluminum. The 428 Super Cobra Jet (a true collector engine) can be identified by its external oil cooler.

On a roll with NASCAR wins, Ford introduced the 385 Series of V-8’s which include the 429 Thunderjet, Cobra Jet, Super Cobra Jet and yes, “The Boss.” The 429 NASCAR engine features a beefier lower end, O-ringed decks to secure head gaskets, and a variety of crescent or hemi block designs. Magnesium was used to cast the valve covers and intake manifolds to save weight.

For the street, a new 335 Series was introduced in 1970 thru the mid seventies. This is your 351 Cleveland, 351 CJ, the extremely desirable 351 Boss found in a few 1971 Boss 351 Mustangs, and a 351 HO that was a torquey engine that only made 275 hp. The 351 M and 400 followed in 1971 which feature interchangeable parts with few exceptions. So, there are your Ford V-8’s from 1954 through 1975!

This edition of Hauln’ Freight shows us that the sub-quote to the right has some merit. I asked for a bit of help on this edition and guess what? Several members really stepped up to the plate and contributed in a big way with photos and a first hand account of their trip to the North South Run in San Luis Obispo. The Weber’s, Beverley’s, Hamono’s, and Wolcott’s all contributed photos and articles. Dianne Homano went one better with those great shots from the Corn Feed and the Neiheisel’s even came through all the way from Ohio on the Smoky Mountain F-100 Run. Add to that the hard facts on acceleration from my partner in crime Bob Weinrich and the cute one about the CODGERS from Uncle Walt, a piece from Craig Hozel form the John Force Race Station and voila... we have a newsletter to read! I hope you all enjoy it.

It is efforts like this that make our chapter as well as our “EXTENDED FAMILY” of car geeks as strong as it is. Over and over again we stick together when needed. The recent North South event showed what we are made of with a total of 17 members and guests visiting the show. The call for parking help went out by the organizers of the Chino Corn Feed Run and again we came through with what the Chairman tole be was the best organized parking they have ever had. Next up will be the bag stuffing for Cruisin for a Cure on September 12th. I’m sure that we will have a strong showing to support Debbie Baker and her cause.

We all enjoy our trucks but together we have found another common ground of friendship. This is what keeps us going strong and this is why we are a desirable club for people to join. Keep up the good work everybody...I am proud to be part of the fun and action.

Northsouth‘09... byDianne&masshamano

The drive up was fun caravanning with Rudy and Edith! Rudy led! He took us down the 105 through Marina Del Rey, Venice, Santa Monica, Malibu, to Oxnard! Back on the 101 through Ventura, Santa Barbara, Santa Maria to San Luis Obispo! Beautiful scen-ery and the weather was nice! Good open window weather, since we didn’t get our air conditioner completely in! It’s back in the shop now, so I don’t think we’ll have it for the Chino Corn Run! But we’re still going to help park cars! The North/South event was great! The Embassy Suites was a nice place

to have the event! Everything is there! Free breakfast and afternoon reception with free drinks and snacks! A lot of areas to congrigate! A mall to shop and restaurants! There was even a famers market on Saturday that some of us ladies went to! Great produce! We had an unfortunate incident happen, the front of Mas’ truck got wet from the lawn sprinklers going on overnight! We missed the Friday mystery cruise because we spent all morning trying to get hard water spots off the truck! Rudy gave us some stuff to use while he and Edith went off to the cruise! Met a nice couple, Lynn and Dixie, from Valley Center, CA. He brought some stuff he uses called ICE, and it worked pretty good! The Meguire’s detailer didn’t work very well! Met some other nice folks too! Joe and Diane from Torrance, Ray from Sacremento, and a couple we met at the McDonald’s in Malibu where we stopped for a break! They said they were going to San Luis Obispo and staying at the Embassy Suites too! The husband, son and granddaughter were swimming the Alcatraz channel on Saturday! We went on the evening cruise to Santa Ma-ria to a Drive-in Diner that had a car show! No awards, just show off your car or truck! It was a little tight with our trucks there! It was no Ruby’s! We tried to go to the Thursday night Farmer’s Market downtown, but there just wasn’t any parking unless you wanted to park blocks away and walk! We also heard alot about a place called JOCKOS in Nipomo for the best steaks! However, we didn’t have the time to go! Hopefully, next time we can go!By Saturday, we had a nice group from Pickups Limited OC represented! Of course, Tom Cho-dak! It was his 39th! Carl and Pam Strubbs, Gene and Karen Wolcott, Rudy and Edith Weber, Dale and Gloria, Bill and Glima Beverly, Bill and Sandy Balthasar, Dave Britton and Mas and Dianne Hamano. I wished we had brought our club banner to put up! Other clubs had their ban-ners hung from the railing of the interior courtyard for everyone to see!The car show and awards dinner was fun and very nice! A lot of nice trucks! Rudy and Mas received Top Twenty Awards for Best Truck! Bill Balthasar got a specialty award for Best Truck Under Construction! Met more nice folks at each event! I got very lucky at the car show raffle, I came home with five nice raffle prizes, a salad spinner, a citrus juicer, a welcome wreath, a cloth cooler, and a Santa cookie jar! Karen won a nice rolling stool! They had a fun Hot Wheels drag race competition that the wife we met from Valley Center won! They also cleaned up on prizes! They won $300 in one of their prizes! They had very nice prices at the awards dinner, TV, Craftsmen tool chest, gift certificates, a hand painted

picture, etc! We’re looking forward to going next year to the 40th Anniversay of North/South!Proud PUL,OC members, Dianne and Mas

We actually left for this run on Wednesday, August 12 as we were meeting up with Karen’s niece and family at El Capitan State Beach for the day and evening. That night we stayed in Buellton for the night and when we woke up Thursday morn-ing the truck was covered with ashes. It seems that there were several fires in the area plus oth-ers farther north.

On Thursday we drove on to San Luis Obispo, meeting up with Tom Chodak, Rudy & Edith Weber, and Mas & Dianne Hamono. Thursday night we went to dinner at Jocko’s and had a great meal - I mean great!!!! The steaks were unbeliev-able and Karen ate the whole fillet mignon. The Webers and Hamono’s attempted to attend the Farmers Market but it was so crowded they ended up at the Boston Market.

On Friday 15 trucks left for a Mystery Run after a great breakfast at the Embassy Suites. The Mystery Run was organized by Fred and run by Randy Ledbettor and was great fun. Our first stop was the Arroyo Grande Historic Village. We walked over a suspension bridge that was built in 1875 and also explored some very old structures that were very quaint. Next stop was Old Edna a small town with a population of “1”. We met the self described mayor Pattea, who gave some historical data on the town and told us about her property of 7.8 acres which included a deli a bed and breakfast and an antique store. We all had a great lunch.

From there we proceeded to the Edna Valley Vineyard where some finished their lunches from the deli at picnic tables overlooking the vineyards. Afterwards it was inside to wine taste and to purchase our favorites.

Our next stop was a garage on the vineyard property that housed some very old Ford trucks and cars plus items that brought back some great memories. Then we headed back to the Embassy Suites around 2pm and nap time. We were up at 4pm and headed to Santa Maria for a cruise night at JR’s Drive-In. There were seven trucks that participated from the North South gang. The place was packed with our trucks and other vintage vehicles. We all ordered cheeseburg-ers and onion rings with malts and sodas. It was great. They even had a fellow strumming a guitar and singing 50’s music.

We headed back to hotel before dark and met up with Gloria & Dale Beverley, Sandy & Bill Balthasar, and Pam and Carl Stubbs. We shared some laughs and then ended up at the exercise room where we did the treadmill while Gloria and Dale lifted weights, Sandy rode the bicycle, and Edith did some treadmill while Rudy watched and took pictures.

Saturday was show day with about 60 trucks…all great looking, of course. We sat under pop-ups and shared stories. We had lunch right there on the lawn and bought raffle tickets. Mas & Dianne won several items and Karen & Gene won a nice stool for Gene to sit on while polishing his wheels. Bill & Glima Beverley showed up along with their two dogs and spent the day with all of us. 3pm brought another nap time for us and then Happy Hour at 5:30pm. Dinner and awards were at 7pm and was quite good with vegetable lasagna or steak being offered and cheese cake for dessert. Jim Moore was emcee for the evening and did great job. Rudy Weber and Mas Hamono won in the Top 20 group while Bill Balthasar won for best truck Work in Progress. A few more raffle prizes were won with Gene winning a nice watch. Sunday morning had everybody up by 8:30am to have one last drawing. We all turned in our surveys and received a ticket to win $50 cash which Karen won!

We all had a great time. It was a really nice run with nice people and at a nice hotel. We look forward to 2010 and a few more trucks to join us. This year our club was well represented by six trucks and 15 club members (including spouses). This beat last year when we only had one truck and 5 club members.

Keep on Truckin - see you next year!! Karen and Gene Wolcott

Our convoy grouped for breakfast at the Carriage restaurant in La Mirada, it consisted of two trucks 1 Rudy & Edith 2 Mas & Dianne. We went up PCH to our first stop at McDonald’s in Malibu for a pit stop and coffee, We meet a couple that was going to our same Hotel and then to swim on Sunday from Alcatraz to SF at 65 years old and had done this many times in the past.We started out again on P.C.H. through Oxnard, Ventura then Mas made a quick stop in Montecito for gas, he only needed 9 gallons. His gas gage was reading backwards. Mas & Dianne keep saying I drive fast but then kept up. Latter I found out that their speedometer was not working. The coast drive was just outstanding. We saw one other truck on our way, stopped in Buellton for lunch at Taco Bell, and I got gas for the first time (good gas mileage). We started to see smoke from fires, about 30 miles outside of Santa Maria, a fire just started on our left side in the hills, Dianne got good pictures and also took many pictures of my truck every time we went by a road sign or tunnel (Pictures will be on sale next week).

We arrived in San Luis Obispo and at our hotel the Embassy Suites about 3:15 pm. I forgot to mention I was carrying most of the items for the Goodie Bags for Carl and the show. They were looking for me to arrive earlier but everything worked well.Cocktail time…that’s when everyone got together and had vegetables and chips with cheese sauce and had one hell of a good time...because it was free drinks.Thursday night downtown San Luis Obispo for the Farmers Market could not get a parking space within 8 blocks so we left and went to Hometown Buffet in the parking lot of our Hotel and it was awesome. Friday morning on our Mystery tour 16 trucks all in a row, people taking pictures and giving us high fives it was so exciting to have that many trucks. Our first stop was a cute place called Edna and we walked on the oldest swinging bridge and walked in the small historical town, we left 1 hr. later and we stopped at old Edna and we parked in a dirt road and out came the Mayer Pattia and greeted us and told us that she did not live there but they bought 8 acres, she had a home for rent, B&B, a sandwich and antique shop. We all bought lunch there but ate at the Valley Vineyard in Edna. It was so beautiful, some bought wine then we left and went to a private Model A Ford museum and collection of all gas station items ( Polly ) sign, gas cans oil cans etc, flat head engines on stands. This collection has 2 Model A trucks, a 40 Ford car, 2 Ford roasters, Model A road racers & many others (wow it was awesome) this concluded our great mystery tour and went back to the hotel... 4:30pm we left for Santa Maria for an old Drive-In, car show & dinner... Sat 7:30am Breakfast at the Embassy Suites, Breakfast was anything you would want... 8:30am truck show, I started cleaning, then checked out all the other trucks, what a great bunch of trucks. Lunch was served by the hote. We took part in the other things; 50/50, Regular drawing (won nothing)...Cocktails at 5:30pm, Banquet at 7:00pm great food, everything was presented very well, plaques were given out. Plaques for the Top 20 were given and I received one, and Mas also received one, Bill got a plaque for under construction... Ps. 9:00am. Sat. the Lady’s Edith, Karen and Dianne went to the Farmers Mkt. outside the Hotel parking lot and had a great time. Everyone had a fantastic time and we are ready for next years 40th. Anniversary show. Big Foot. Rudy Weber.

Northsouth‘09...bydale&GloriabeverleyBeautiful weather welcomed us this year for the 39th Annual North-South Run. This is the oldest annual F-100 event that is still in existence. The north is represented by multiple chapters of the F-100 Elites, and the south is represented by multiple chapters of Pickups Limited. Once again it was held in San Luis Obispo at the Embassy Suites Hotel, which has always been a good place to have the run. North-South had also been held at this same location as far back as the late 1980’s.

Gloria and I departed Friday morning from Orange County. Although we missed the last couple of years, prior to that we had never missed a single event from our first time attending the North-South in 1978. We have almost totaled 30 years of attending the North-South Run. A benefit that is unique to those of us that have been around that long are the memories you have from previous years, along with seeing many of the friends you have made along the way.

This year we decided to choose a little different route to get to San Luis Obispo. We started on the 405 freeway, to Interstate 5, until we got to the bottom of the Grapevine which is about 15 miles south of Bakersfield. At that point we turned west onto state highway 166 which would lead us just north of Santa Maria. The 166 was new to us but it was a beautiful 100 miles to the coast. This year, we were surrounded by some wild fires as we got closer to Santa Maria. Fortunately there were no road closures and we were able to merge onto the 101 and continue to San Luis Obispo. On the way we saw about 15 trucks heading south for the cruise night in Santa Maria. This year the North-South committee scheduled some activities on Friday which not only included the cruise to Santa Maria but also a “Mystery Cruise” earlier Friday morning. Those wanting to attend next year might want to get there on Thursday to be able to participate in those activities. We heard good comments about these activities from others at the run.

When we arrived to the Embassy Suites there were about a dozen trucks in the parking lot. After checking in we were told that there was a truck wash set up for us to clean our trucks for the show. The nice thing about this event is that we could leave our trucks parked for the night and wake up with it ready for the show the next morning!

Friday evening we participated in “Happy Hour“’ and met other Orange County members who had arrived. From Orange County that included Rudy and Edith Weber, Gene and Karen Wolcott, Bill and Sandy Balthasar, Pam and Carl Stubbs, Mas and Dianne Hamano, Dave Britton, and Tom Chodak. Tom has been attending this run since its inception in 1970, never missing any of them. If you need any history about the event he is probably the best choice. Afterwards we ate dinner and enjoyed each others company, and even went with Gene and Karen to the Hotel’s exercise center to work off those extra calories.

Next morning show and shine began around 8:00 although the show officially began after 9:00 a.m. There were over 40 trucks with 60 plus packets sold for the event. Weather was fantastic with a slight cool breeze blowing through most of the day. Activities included a day long raffle and San Gabriel hosting a “Hot Wheels” racing event. Participants could pick out a hot wheel vehicle and buy it for the $2.00 entry fee. Racing in eliminations followed until the winners were established. First place winner received a 50/50 split of the entry fees. A little later the lunch was hosted by the Embassy Suites with hot dogs and hamburgers as the main entrees. The bread must have been made fresh because it was great!

Even though the turnout was not that large, the quality of trucks was good. The smaller attendance seemed to rekindle an atmosphere of friendliness that was similar to that of years gone by. Long distance and unfortunately hard luck went to Jack Billings of Montana. Jack had a slight accident just outside of Paso Robles which took out a fender and damaged many of the parts on his front end. Fortunately there were no injuries and the Ledbetter clan was able to help Jack get the truck in condition for the drive back to Montana. Jack has been coming to this run for 25 years. That is about 75,000 miles dedicated just to attending all of these runs! One of the most unique vehicles of the event was a 1955 car hauler with a 1956 F-100 on the back.

After the day show passed we got ready for the banquet also held at the hotel that night. The format was a sit down dinner served with a selected choice of entrees. This is still one of the few events we attend that have this format, one of my personal favorites. Food and service was good and we heard no complaints about it. A slide show followed displaying events of the weekend and then on to awards. It is always nice to see a picture of a winning vehicle as it was announced. Good job on the slide show. Concluding the evening awards were given in some special categories as well as the Top 20 of the event. Judging was performed by a local car club. Winners from Orange County included Mas and Dianne, as well as Rudy and Edith. Bill and Sandy won Best Under Construction. Congratulations!

Sunday we enjoyed another breakfast hosted by the hotel and met with some old friends that we would probably not see again until next year. The North-South committee held some cash raffle prizes for those submitting their feedback on the run. Afterwards most checked out but some were able to continue their vacation including Gloria and I.

For next year save some money and mark your calendars for the 40th North-South Run on August 20 thru 22nd of 2010!

Gloria & Dale

cornfeed2009-chinoCA.I think this shot of Jerry Alford says it all about the Corn Feed Run... Just relax and take it easy. that’s easy to say for most of the participants but what about the workers. Ev-ery year members of Pickups Limited of Orange County give their time and get up at the butt crack of dawn to help park cars at this event. According to the event chairperson Walt Pocock (of Cherries fame) the event was up a bit from last year with around 415 vehicles. Not bad when you consider that everybody is busy blaming the economy for ev-erything bad including the flu and this was also the same weekend as Hot August Nights in Reno. As aoways the Corn Feed offers some of the finest vehicles around and gives us OC guys and girls somehing different to drool over.

The Pickups Limited gang descended on Downey California for the 8th annual Good Shepherd Car Show. This quiet little show is always full of surprise like the full custom Nash that appeared and the hand crafted 60’s era Dodge Pickup with a Hemi standing proud under the hood. We all did our best to pick the cars apart but all in all everything was quite nice. It’s always nice to see something different for a change.

Is that a MINI I see?

What a set of critical eyes!

Can you say Land yacht?

cruisin’atbob’sinburbank... everyfridaynight Opened in 1949, Bob’s Burbank is the oldest restaurant in the

nationwide chain. When the City of Burbank declared the restaurant a historical landmark last year, the ‘50’s diner underwent a face lift to re-create the ‘50s style which included Car Hop Service on Saturday’s & Sundays and a continuance of the Friday Night Cruise presented by the famous Road Kings car club. I have lived in the L.A. area my entire life but have never taken the time to make it to this weekly event and all I can say is WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG?

This was one of the most awesome cruise nights I have ever been to. There was everything from hot rods, to wild customs, to a car just in from Bonneville, to a White German Shepherd riding on the tank of a motor cycle. There was everything you could imagine with people from around the world walking around with one thing in common ...having a love of cars. If you want a parking space in the Bob’s lot, the regulars tell me that you need to get there around 2:00pm or so, even though the show starts at 6:00...parking on the street if you just want to look...read the signs as some of the neighborhoods are parking by permit only, but if you ask me my $35 parking ticket was worth the price!

MURRIETA CA. - An advertisement on the craigslist Web site led to the recovery of a $100,000 truck belonging to former Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pitcher Troy Percival, and the arrest of an alleged chop shop owner, authorities said today.

The 1956 Ford F100 was stolen from Percival’s Mead Valley home in February, along with three large-screen televisions and a computer, according to sheriff’s Detective Guy Gilbert.

On Sunday, a person scanning the craigslist Web site saw an ad for one of the truck’s fenders.

``The citizen contacted the seller, made an agreement for purchase and obtained an address to inspect the part,’’ Gilbert said.

Sheriff’s deputies contacted the seller, who said he did not know the part had been stolen, Gilbert said.

He said the seller led deputies to Michael Anthony Gonzalez, 30, and the cannibalized truck was found at his home in the 100 block of Bowen in Perris.

Detectives located truck parts in two locations in Mead Valley, including an $18,000 engine, but the bed, the bench seat and the driver’s-side door were still missing, Gilbert said.

Gonzales was arrested on suspicion of grand theft, auto theft, owning a chop shop and receiving stolen goods. He is scheduled to be arraigned Friday.

He remains jailed in lieu of $25,000 bail, according to court records.

Percival is now with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Editor’s note: Some of you may remember this truck. Troy joined us several years ago at Cruisin’ for a Cure while he was recovering from Tommy John arm surgery. He was having a few problems with his “just finished” truck and had lost some headder collector bolts. Several of us in the Pickups Limited gang crawled under this gorgeous truck and got it going again. Let’s hope that Troy can do better with this truck than they could with Humpty Dumpty and gather up enough of the pieces to have his pride and joy back on the road soon. Maybe this guy knows something about Milt’s truck too?

YORBA LINDA, CA (August 11, 2009) --- After a full day of Fords, family and fun John Force Racing car show manager Craig Hoelzel pronounced the Ken Grody Ford and Auto Club All Ford Car Show held last Sunday, August 9th a huge success.

“It was a great day. We had over 6,000 fans attend the event and most importantly those same fans dropped off 2,416 pounds of canned food for the Orange County Food Bank. There were over 300 Ford and Mercury cars and trucks on display,” said Hoelzel.

In addition to the eye candy of Fords and Mercurys on display fans also got a chance to get autographs from 14-time Funny Car champion John Force, his three daughters racers Ashley, Brittany and Courtney Force plus legendary Ford Funny Car racer Gas Ronda.

Interactive displays also captured the attention of the people in attendance and many took the chance to test drive the yet to be released in the U.S. the 2010 Ford Fiesta.

Here’s some pictures from The Great Smoky Mtn Run in Pigeon Forge last weekend. We had a really great time - a nice laid back show - lots of BS. There were 170 trucks this year up from 125 last year - and it looks like it’ll continue to grow. A lot of really nice quality trucks and good people. It was good to see Anthony again - how do like his new ride? The weather was great - although a little hot 92 with humidity - but with the hotel right there it was easy to cool off. Friday night was the cruise to Gatlinburg - but we didn’t get to go as I volunteered for and got recruited for grill duty to cook the hamburgers & hot dogs for about 500! Stanley had enterainment this year - Friday night was a local couple that did everything from Fleetwood Mac to Johnny cash and Saturday night Elvis was there for both before awards and then later on outside - he was one of the better one’s we’ve seen.

One top fuel dragster 500 cubic inch Hemi engine makes more horsepower than the first 4 rows of stock cars at the Daytona 500. It takes just 15/100ths of a second for all 6,000+ horsepower of an NHRA Top Fuel dragster engine to reach the rear wheels. Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 1-1/2 gallons of nitro methane per second; a fully loaded 747 consumes jet fuel at the same rate with 25% less energy being produced. A stock Dodge Hemi V8 engine cannot produce enough power to drive the dragster’s supercharger. With 3,000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into a near-solid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lock at full throttle. At the stoichiometric (stoichiometry: methodology and technology by which quantities of reactants and products in chemical reactions are determined) 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture of nitro methane, the flame front temperature measures 7,050 deg F. Nitro methane burns yellow.. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust gases. Dual magnetos supply 44 amps to each spark plug. This is the output of an arc welder in each cylinder. Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. After halfway, the engine is dieseling from compression, plus the glow of exhaust valves at 1,400 deg F. The engine can only be shut down by cutting the fuel flow. If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in the affected cylinders and then explodes with sufficient force to blow cylinder heads off the block in pieces or split the block in half. In order to exceed 300 mph in 4. 5 seconds, dragsters must accelerate an average of over 4G’s. In order to reach 200 mph (well before half-track), the launch acceleration approaches 8G’s. Dragsters reach over 300 miles per hour before you have completed reading this sentence. Top fuel engines turn approximately 540 revolutions from light to light! Including the burnout, the engine must only survive 900 revolutions under load. The redline is actually quite high at 9,500 rpm. Assuming all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for free, and for once NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run costs an estimate $1,000.00 per second. The current top fuel dragster elapsed time record is 4.428 seconds for the quarter mile (11/12/06, Tony Schumacher, at Pomona , CA ). The top speed record is 336.15 mph as measured over the last 66’ of the run (05/25/05 Tony Schumacher, at Hebron, OH). Putting all of this into perspective: You are driving the average $140,000 Lingenfelter ‘twin-turbo’ powered Corvette Z06.. Over a mile up the road, a top fuel dragster is staged and ready to launch down a quarter mile strip as you pass. You have the advantage of a flying start. You run the ‘Vette hard up through the gears and blast across the starting line and pass the dragster at an honest 200 mph. The ‘tree’ goes green for both of you at that moment. The dragster launches and starts after you. You keep your foot down hard, but you hear an incredibly brutal whine that sears your eardrums and within 3 seconds, the dragster catches and passes you. He beats you to the finish line, a quarter mile away from where you just passed him. Think about it, from a standing start, the dragster had spotted you 200 mph and not only caught, but nearly blasted you off the road when he passed you within a mere 1,320 foot long race course. ...... and that my friends, is ACCELERATION! Experience accelleration first hand and join us on November 13th in Pomona for the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals... see page 18 for more details

Democrats, realizing the success of the Pres-ident’s “Cash For Clunkers” rebate program, have revamped a major portion of their National Health Care Plan.

President Obama, Speaker Pelosi, and Sen. Reed are expected to make this major an-nouncement at a joint news conference later this week. I have obtained an advanced copy of the proposal which is named….

“CASH FOR CODGERS” And It Works Like This…

Couples wishing to access health care funds in order to pay for the delivery of a child will be required to turn in one old person. The amount the government grants them will be fixed ac-cording to a sliding scale. Older and more prescription dependent ‘codgers’ will garner the highest amounts.

Special “Bonuses” will be paid for those submit-ting codgers in targeted groups, such as smok-ers, alcohol drinkers, persons 10 pounds over their government prescribed weight, and any member of the Republican Party.

Smaller bonuses will be given for ‘codgers’ who consume beef, soda, fried foods, potato chips, lattes, whole milk, dairy products, bacon, Brus-sels sprouts, or Girl Scout Cookies.

All ‘codgers’ will be rendered totally useless via toxic injection. This will insure that they are not secretly resold or their body parts harvested to keep other ‘codgers’ in repair.

Car dealer assistant Elder Rodriguez smiles as he tears down an ad banner, as the Cash for Clunk-ers government program comes to an end Monday night, at the Felix Chevrolet Autos downtown Los Angeles on Monday, Aug. 24, 2009. The Transpor-tation Department is assuring auto dealers they will get time to submit their pending Cash for Clunk-ers deals, as continued problems with the govern-

ment’s Web site make it difficult for dealers to file for repayment under the popular $3 bil-lion government rebate program.

What remains of a 1991 Ford pick-up traded in as part of the Cash for Clunkers program lies in a crusher at Pearl Road Auto Parts Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, in Cleveland. As Cash for Clunkers comes

to an end, now comes the hard part for the auto industry — luring customers without big Cash for Clunk-ers discounts.

CashforCodgersvs.CashforclunkersNo Matter what you might think of this program, you must ad-mit that at least one thing was accomplished... cars moved off the dealer’s lots. But ask yourself, at what expense? Was this program just a taste of something yet to come? Will our F-100’s be next? It seems that there is always someone on Capital Hill that is out to crush those “old cars” that are out there... you know the ones, the gross polluters. Our elected representatives are all too quick to lump all older vehicles into the same cat-egory without taking into consideration that many of our trucks run as clean if not cleaner than late model vehicles. Add to that the fact that 5,000 miles would be a big driving year for many of us and we all see how crazy this type of thinking is. The SEMA Action Network (http://www.semasan.com) is a good source for what is going on around us and our vehicles. Check them out REGULARLY to see what your elected officials have up their selves.

Give Me A Brake… By Glenn Kerr

Emergency Road Service

Well you walk into a restaurant, strung out from the road. You feel the eyes upon you as you're shakin' off the cold. You pretend it doesn't bother you, but you just want to explode. Most times you can't hear 'em talk, other times you can. It’s the same old clichés, “I’d rather push a Chevy than drive a Ford”, “Fix Or Repair Daily”, “Found On Road Dead”. And my

favorite, “Friends don’t let friends drive Fords”. You always seem out numbered, so you don't dare make a stand. Well... sometimes you’ve just got to push that Ford.

This may be parity but the reality is that there are two types of drivers; those who’ve had mechanical break downs and those who will. Sooner or later it’s going to happen and your pride and joy will be “Found On Road Dead”. Even the Chevy guys will be there sooner or later.

True Life StoriesI had the opportunity to go with Chris and help with the F100 Nationals Cruise Friday before the show. I don’t know exactly how many miles the cruise route was, but I’d guess it may be close to 100 miles. It shouldn’t have been a big deal. Most of us drive thousands of miles without any problems.

Before we even started, one guy had a hydraulic brake light switch fail and leak. I’ve never seen that one before. At the firststop another guy had a little problem getting into his truck after we parked in Corona Del Mar. He had shaved door handles and used a remote transmitter to open the windows so he could get in. Apparently that was his only way of opening the door and had no back up. The battery was weak in the remote transmitter. Finally he got the window to go down, but not after about 10 minutes of uncertainly. I was just about ready to offer my 32oz ball-peen hammer. It could have been ugly. A new battery was purchased at our next stop in Laguna Beach and life was good again.

The next problem happened as one of the trucks stopped for gas before going into Trabuco Canyon. After fueling up it wouldn’t start. Ever been there? It’s not a good feeling. I know from experience.

The last incident was at Cooks Corner with a dead battery. I’ve been there too. But wait, there’s more. Not one of us had any jumper cables. A set finally was found and at last we were on our way again.

That was 3 mechanical problems out of about 20 trucks. That was a shade more than 10%. The only one didn’t finish the cruise was the truck that wouldn’t start at the gas station. He may still be there.

What Do You Carry In Your Wallet (or truck)?Let’s talk about Emergency Road Service and how we can be prepared for life’s little challenges when we’re “Found On Road Dead”. I think it goes with out saying how important a cell phone and AAA or some other type of road service is. I use AAA with the extended mileage. I figure if it’s catastrophic, I can either get towed home or to my destination, which ever suits the need. I also found that on the River or a Lake, a 6-pack and rope could get me anywhere I needed to go. Yep, been there too.

The Short HaulSo what could you carry for short trips or local driving? I suppose it all depends on your mechanical ability and if you’re traveling with a group. You may not be able to diagnose and change a fuel pump by yourself on a solo cruise this Saturday. But what if you’re on a cruise with the club? There’s safety in numbers. Someone is bound to be able to find and fix a problem, if the parts are on hand. Like the half dozen of us at Cook’s Corner without a pair of jumper cables. I think the spare parts we might carry are as much for someone else as the are for ours own needs.

Suggestions for basic spare parts:basic hand tools electrical test light electrical or duct tape some wire and connectors spare tire in a can tire patch kit electric fuel pump fuel hose and clamps

ignition parts to fit your ignition tow rope jumper cables radiator stop leak brake fluid power steering fluid transmission fluid flairs or reflective devises

The Long HaulLonger trips might dictate some more items. Such as:

All the items in the short haul list, plus wheel or axle bearings a floor jack maybe a jack stand spare tire electric air pump

selection of nuts and bolts fan belt or belts for your motor radiator hoses heater hose how about battery powered impact wrench spare lug nuts and studs

These are just suggestions. Items particular to your own vehicle might be things to consider in an emergency road kit.

An Ounce of PreventionTheoretically, if you are on top of the maintenance of your truck, you shouldn’t need these things, right? No necessarily. Once upon a time, I spent the first week of a two week vacation getting my 1960 F-100 ready to tow my buggy to the Glamis Sand Dunes. I went over everything I could find that needed attention and fixed it.

Somewhere after this small town of Westmorland I blew a transmission cooler line. A classic case of Found On Road Dead. I needed a new piece of hose and didn’t have one. One of my friends who was with us kept a lot of “junk” in the back of his (Chevy, wouldn’t you know) duelie. We always made fun of him for the “junk” he carried around. After my friend saw what the problem was, he started to rummage through his “junk”. Low and behold, he pulled out the exact piece of hose I needed. He even had some transmission fluid. In short order we were back on the road. The point is, you just never know, even when you’ve tried to cover all the possibilities. Stuff happens.

Club Safety InspectionsThe club safety inspections are important. Not only does it give the rest of us a chance to look over what you’ve done to your truck (and get good ideas), but most important, it’s a chance to find those things that can leave you stranded by the side of the road; before it happens. Nobody wants to be “That Guy” who breaks down on a club run. Nobody wants to be “That Guy” who holds everybody up. Nobody else wants to leave “That Guy” behind after he’s had a break down. If you haven’t done a Safety Inspection yet, get on it. You don’t want to be “That Guy”. We don’t want you to be “That Guy”.

As always, if you have any questions, please free to call me. And as always, if I don’t know the answer or can’t find one, I’llmake one up that sounds plausible.
