PRESIDENT=S MESSAGE DE N0AG Looks like Spring has Sprung, so to speak, in Kansas City. We survived another mid-western winter. The first WØAR Contest came to a conclusion. The second WØAR DX Challenge began April 1st, 2011 and will run until March 31st, 2012. Check it out on the website at www.kcdxclub.com. There are a few changes for the 2nd edition of this contest. We added a ROOKIE and a WIRES category to appeal the folks that are not blessed with beams & towers. To make it a bit more interesting Zones are now multipliers. Check it out and join the fun.

Dayton is just around the corner. Come May all roads lead to Dayton. The KCDXC’s 31st running of the CW pile-up will occur this yearYhard to believe. Of course we are looking forward to Dayton this year for a number of reasons beyond the usual get away. The WØDXCC has taken on a life of it=s own and we are going to do everything we possibly can to bring as much attention to it as possible at the Dayton Hamvention.

Speaking of the convention, if you have not been on the website lately do yourself a favor and check out www.w0dxcc.com. The speakers & programs just do not get any better than this. I would ask all KCDX Club members to purchase their tickets as soon as possible, if they have not done so. Sure I would like to see

all of our members buy a ticket to the convention but the

tickets to the dinner are going so fast that I would hate to see one of our own members left out because they had waited to buy a ticket. So go to the website (www.w0dxcc.com) click on registration then click on the appropriate button.

Looks like the winners of the 2010-2011 WØAR CONTEST are in. We hope to have a significant increase in participation this year due to the new rule changes. I personally had a really good time during the last contest. I hope you will also enjoy the current competition. Well Y got to get packed for Dayton! 73, TomYNØAG

2011 KCDXC DUES-$20 It is time for our annual collection of dues for membership. Our expenses at Dayton have gone up, so we need everyone to respond quickly with their dues for 2011. Please send your check to AC0C, Jeff, at 15922 W. 91st Ter., Lenexa, KS 66219.

DAYTON: KCDXC HOSPITALITY SUITE (Continuied from page 1) The photos below show the suite before the crowds appeared and filled our room. The second shot shows the CW Pile Up Test set up before the high speed tones of CW filled the air.

K0VBU and K0VXU used new software, created by NO5W, Chuck, this year on the Pile Up Test. It was an outstanding improvement and offers real time screen displays of the test takers in the Test room thru a computer link to the main room of the suite. The crowd stood almost frozen at times in front of the screen, especially when a well known CW jock was in the room taking the test. Check out the picture below of the display shown while one of our own was

taking the test(K0LW, the blue bar graph).

Page 7: The Official Newsletter of the Kansas City DX Club KC DX NEWS · prior to the publication of the newsletter. See page 2. The new totals have been forwarded to K0VBU for publication

The photo above shows the crowd in the suite watching the computer display as shown in the top photo. Real time scoring and graphic display were a huge hit for the testing crew! VE3DZ was the top scorer this year and won the Begali Key. He was followed by N2NT, then K5ZD, N2NC and K4BAI. All received nice prizes from the KCDXC. N0AG, KCDXC President, awarded the prizes at the end of the competition just after midnight. The possibilities with this new software are almost endless. Some include real time internet distribution or links within the Crowne Plaza as well. Check out the KCDXC Web site for a complete write up on the CW Pile Up Contest. NO5W, sent out the following email after he got home from Dayton explaining his perspective of his new software and the KCDXC Hospitality Suite experience: AfyiThanks for the comments on "Morse Race".It was definitely a hit and a demonstration of that old saw about a graphic being worth all those words, and an attention grabber. The few times I switched back to the tabular display of the results there were many "go back to the race" requests from the audience, several of whom were camped out on the floor in front of the big LCD.Several in the audience had suggestions for additional features including, as suggested by Dale, live video from the competition room, and, of course, the traditional bugle call at the start:>)

As far as I know no one suggested starting with a movie clip or song from Guys and Dolls -- you know the tune that goes"I've got the horse right here,His name is Paul Revere ...""And on the morning lineThey say he looks real fine ..."But there WERE some who thought a bit of wagering would add some interest. Also several in the audience, including some representatives from ARRL and RSGB, inquired about availability, where it had been used, and how it got started. So I related how it started as a simple "sneaker net" application at a competition sponsored by the Central Texas DX and Contest Club at the Austin Summerfest and grew from there into the current implementation.Speaking of Summerfest, I see from ZedL's note that there may be plans to run it again. If so, I hope many will come out and participate. 73/Chuck/NO5W@ The KCDXC has a full year to consider all the possible things that can be done with the new software Chuck created.

N0RB is shown below listening to G3RZP=s latest joke. Peter was one of many foreign hams to visit the KCDXC Suite. Several hundred visitors drifted thru the KCDXC Suite. Yet, N0RB reports that beer distribution was down a little this year. He figured it was about 2 cases less than last year. However, AA0MZ didn=t attend Dayton this year. This easily accounted for the two case difference. The KCDXC appreciated the VQ9LA trip to the PX at Wright Patterson AFB and the money he saved us.

Page 8: The Official Newsletter of the Kansas City DX Club KC DX NEWS · prior to the publication of the newsletter. See page 2. The new totals have been forwarded to K0VBU for publication

It is real obvious that the hard work and organization of N0RB, K0VBU and K0VXU are essential to a success hospitality suite. A special thanks must go out to these three members! Below is the KCDXC Hospitality Suite Sign -In sheet. Find your old friends:

HAMVENTION NOTES The 2011 Hamvention stunk, literally. On Sat. the sewers clogged and backed up and all the restrooms in Hara had to be closed. The back up caused a spill to drain down thru the north side of the flea market. See the photo below of the repair attempts made by the management of Hara. The warmer than normal weather didn=t help

the situation much either. Skeeter and WD0SRI commented that photo below made them fell homesick. Despite the unusual smell and sunburn, the flea market and Hamvention offered a huge selection of parts and equipment for attendees to see and purchase. Total

attendance was up a little over last year. Many forums on DX, contesting , antennas and special events were presented over the 3 day Hamvention and were well attended. N0AG commented that some were too well attended and very stuffy. One KCDXC member made a big purchase that will be of interest to many. AC0C picked up a FT-5000! Jeff said he may be sleeping in the garage for a while, but the big rig had been calling his name for some time!
