THE MARK OF A BETTER DRIVING EXPERIENCE.

freightlinerchassis.com

When you own a luxury motorcoach that displays this emblem,

you know you’re getting the premium RV driving experience.

At Freightliner Custom Chassis, we developed UltraSteer as the first

line of tag axles that are fully-integrated and precision-tuned to

react to turns and other maneuvers of the coach.

When used with FCCC’s ZF IFS front suspension and compared to a competitor’s

chassis (on a fixed tag), UltraSteer delivers up to 17% reduction in curb-to-curb

turning radius— the tightest turns in the industry. And, because the rear tires

follow the ideal 12º turning path, UltraSteer eliminates costly “tire scrub” wear.

UltraSteer is available with a straight beam axle suspension (B Series),

or with independent suspension (I Series). In both cases, you can

be proud to drive a luxury RV that shares a heritage of engineering

excellence with Mercedes-Benz and the entire Daimler Family.

Look for the UltraSteer emblem on your next premium coach.

My letter to you this issue deals with vendor experiences. The first was ready to go last issue, but because of the passing of long time ACA members, I used the space to honor the memo-ries of our friends.

I’d like to share a quick story with you. When we purchased our new coach, one concern I had was the coach came with a memo-ry foam mattress. I wanted it changed to the sleep number mat-tress we were accustomed to in our 08 Eagle. This was a point of some discussion/negotiation for us. It came down to, “look, trust me you’ll love it. It’s very comfortable. If you don’t, we’ll swap it out.” You know the feeling right? No matter how well you know the dealer, them saying, “trust me”, somehow it leaves a feeling of concern. We took the coach and low and behold, we sleep better in it, then we do on our very, very expensive, very new, home mattress.

Well we started seeing ads for memory foam mattresses from all sorts of dealers, from Wayfair to Mattress firm and everyone in between. Each one had different models, different firmness rat-ings. How do we judge? We know we like the one in the coach. After some digging and mattress flipping, I found the vendor nametag for the coach mattress, Wolf mattress. I found their website. Searching the website, low and behold, they do offer residential mattresses! Dog gone it, not in a Cal King size. I emailed them with our mattress info asking if they could tell me the firmness, etc. so we could start our search. This was on a Saturday. To my surprise, I received an email response on Sunday. Long story short, Beth at Wolf, confirmed they do not catalogue a Cal King mattress with the component mate-rial that our coach mattress has. To my surprise, she offered to research sourcing the material, determine costs to custom build one to our specifications and let me know pricing, etc. We were amazed at this level of customer service.

Two weeks later, we took delivery of our mattress and we sleep better than ever. Great company/Great customer service. The next deals with member concerns I became aware of almost immediately upon becoming your National President. In recent model years, owners have been experiencing what can only be described as an abnormal failure rate of hydraulic hoses and hy-draulic jacks related to coach leveling systems. Over time, most of you are aware that I was in discussions with our corporate partners regarding this issue and together we have come to what we believe are causation, remedy and repair directive solutions. Earlier you all as members received an email blast containing two service bulletins regarding these issues. They are again printed in this issue of our magazine.

The service bulletins were sent to all members deliberately on my instruction, only to make sure we as an association did not inadvertently leave anyone out who may be affected.

[ President’s Letter ]In my discussions with REV Group, I presented the problem as reported by you. Steve Heim took personal ownership of the issue, which had previously been delegated. Steve worked hard and did a lot of the heavy lifting on this for us with Lippert the component supplier.

We both knew of all the reported speculations as to possible causations. Eventually, a determination was made that for the hoses, while installed during the assembly process as required or instructed, at times, the turns or bends created by the hoses at the pump manifold, created pressure on the metal fitting, result-ing is cuts into the hoses over time. The remedy is to “re-clock” or re-position the hoses at the manifold, relieving the potential stress and repairing or replacing any damaged hose. As for the jacks, even I speculated that either the seals were bad or the actual tolerances of the jack housing or piston were off. Turns out, Lippert believes that the hydraulic fluids used to fill the jack assemblies were contaminated. Once we knew the plau-sible causes, the next task, before anything, was making sure all dealers and authorized service centers had complete instruction on how to take care of you, the member when you make your appointment for service and repair. We wanted to make sure that you need only show up once, the parts were on hand and your repair was completed right the first time, and on time with as little down time as possible.

Only then did REV Group have the confidence to provide me and subsequently you, as ACA members, the service bulletins for action. REV Group wants us, as the association to be first. Not only because they care, but also to make sure that the system we have worked on works smoothly, before it goes on to other brands in the family.

I want to thank Pat Terveer, Steve Heim and you my fellow members, who allowed us to get this fixed, by being patient and allowing me to help REV resolve this situation for you. We all did it together as one. Last year at the Spearfish, South Dakota National Rally, I told you that I was of the belief that American Coach was back as a brand who cares, this is proof of that.I choose every day to help in any way I can to be a part of a solution to help develop a better product and association. It’s more rewarding than any other method I see.Till next time,

ACA National President

I believe that Spring has finally sprung! As I write this, Kathy and I are getting ready to head back North from Florida. By the time you read this, we will have been home for a few weeks and heading to Lake Conroe for the 2019 ACA National Rally. This rally will be a great event. South Central Chapter has been working very hard to insure all the attendees have a great time. Food, Entertainment, vendors and seminars will keep all at-tendees busy during the rally.

This is my last letter as your Vice President. As I was collecting my thoughts for this letter, I reflected over the past two years. I can’t believe how fast they went by. Without hesitation, I can say that these past two years were educational, exciting and fun! Educational as I had the opportunity to learn the inner workings of our Association. Exciting because we had the opportunity to address declining membership. We’ve stopped the bleeding, and have seen a modest upturn in member-ship; regaining former members and adding new ones. Fun because Kathy and I got to meet and socialize with many of you at various rallies. The Executive Board and the Chapter Presidents have been an absolute joy to work with. They all are very dedicated to you, our members and doing what’s right for the Association. Our meetings were energetic, full of participation and debating of issues. We weren’t always in agreement, but we drove to a conclusion that is beneficial for all of our members.

I’m leaving the position of Vice President but I’m not leaving the Association. I think I’ll be more involved with the Association than I was as VP. Doug Thomp-son who has been editor of this magazine for about 6 years will be leaving that post. I have agreed to take on that responsibility. I hope that I can rise to the challenge of this very important duty. Doug assures me he’s here to help…..and I’m certain I will need a lot of that help. One does not realize what happens behind the scenes until they are exposed to those behind the scene activi-ties. Doug, thank you for your years of dedication and for your future help!

My tenure as Vice President ends the last night of our ACA National Rally in Lake Conroe, Texas. Your new Vice President, Pat Adams, brings with her considerable knowledge of our Association. Pat was a former ACA National President and currently serves as the ACA National Secretary. I want to thank you all for allowing me the opportunity to serve as your Vice President. I have been honored to represent you, our members. I hope I have lived up to your expectations and did not disappoint. Kathy and I wish you all the best and look forward to seeing you at future rallies.

Safe travels.

ACA Scholarship Foundation

By the time you are reading this article, the Scholar-ship Committee will have reviewed and scored this year’s applications for our annual Scholarship awards.

This year’s committee consists of the following members:Pat Adams, Jerry Scott, Sue Ford, Bev DeAngelis and Vicki Meek. I want to thank all of you for volunteer-ing for this very worthwhile program.

We award ten, $1000.00 scholarships each year to de-serving children or grandchildren of those employees that build or work on our American Coaches. Most recently, at the Western Regional Rally held in March, a total of $3000.00 was collected. Since the beginning of the year, we have collected close to $6000.00 in donations. I cannot thank those that have contributed enough for your generosity. I continue to encourage all members to make a contribution to this foundation. It is so much appreciated by the recipients.

We will present checks to the recipients in early June. I’ll report on that event in the July/August issue of the magazine.

Great LakesSome of us in the Great Lakes area are rejoicing because of melting snow and peeping daffodils. Some of us are just arriving back up north from warm, sunny parts of Florida or Arizona. Regardless of where we spent the winter, we’re getting those beautiful American Coaches ready to hit the road again. For those of us lucky enough, we’ll be heading south to attend the ACA National Rally at Lake Conroe in Montgomery, Texas.

On the way north, Rick and I stopped at the FMCA Rally in Perry, Georgia. WOW! I understand there were close to 2,600 RVs in atten-dance. Lots of informative seminars, millions of vendors (well, maybe not quite that many, but it felt as though we walked miles just to see all of them), and entertainment day and night. A highlight was seeing many of our American Coach friends. The American Coach Chapter of FMCA was there and we saw a few of our REV favorites – Janeen Gerke and Randy Hendricks. Of course, another highlight for us was visiting the REV display area. This year, REV showcased a 2020 model and, once again, new features and new floor plans are available to temp the RV shopper. They had some tempting show prices, too, for those of us who suffer from chronic sticker shock.

We were home less than a week when we headed north again up to Camp Decatur (for newbies, it isn’t really a camp) for a few items we needed the professionals to handle. We were delighted with the new starting time (OK, seven o’clock is only an hour later, but that hour sure makes a huge difference in mealtimes), and we had a very pleasant experience. Our coach was finished by three o’clock and, while the bill did take until the following morning, we thought the total charge was very reasonable in light of the work performed. Our Great Lakes Chapter summer rally schedule has now been firmed up and we’re already getting excited to spend time with our GLC family. Our first rally is in July in Chatham, Illinois just outside Springfield. Here we’ll visit all things Lincoln (as in Abe), from his early family home to his grave, where a moving patriotic ceremony is conducted. Last time we were there, we also enjoyed a Frank Lloyd Wright home which is open for touring. So many neat sights to see and there’s no better way to see them than with friends. Check out our entire summer rally schedule in this ACA magazine.

Last, but certainly not least…a most auspicious occasion has again ar-rived and we want to be the first to wish ourselves a very Happy 28th Birthday. On May 18, 1991, the Great Lakes Chapter of the American Coach Association was born. Our chapter is a very special group of people and we have those founding members to thank for their hard work and tenacity in chartering our chapter and getting us on our feet. We’ll do our best to continue our heritage of friendship and sharing which they so solidly weaved into our foundation. We’ll work to con-tinue to provide a fun-filled way of enjoying each other’s company and these beautiful American Coaches we so love. Happy Birthday GLCers.

In the meantime, on behalf of the Great Lakes Chapter, we wish all of you many miles of good health, good friendships, peace and love.

Bev DeAngelis, President

It’s that time again, we must start getting our coach ready to leave our wonderful Florida winter home at the Big O in Okeechobee. The living is easy here, there are pelicans overhead, palm trees swaying in the breeze, an alligator in the large pond out back of our lot. We have two sandhill cranes (mate for life) that come to be fed, we give them a little bread. It is funny, Ronnie and be walking in the street, they recognize him and go im-mediately to our back yard. We will miss them AND the fresh tomatoes we pick about every three weeks. We get a five gallon bucket full, all degrees of ripeness for $12.00, wipe with vinegar and water, wrap in newspa-per and they save real good. We are going to take some home to family.

We will head north to Missouri to Ronnie’s farm, spend time with his family, hold and kiss his (our) new great grandson born March 12. When we are ready we will head to our Smoky Mountain home in Tennessee. Too bad you have to get old to get to do that. We will return to Missouri in May to pick up our clean, packed American Eagle and head for Lake Conroe, Texas for our National Rally the 18th. Ron has a huge building to store when not in use. We look forward to seeing our “Bonus Friends” again.

Life is here today, gone tomorrow, so sow the right seeds---you’ll be eating from your own garden.

Until we meet again,

Barbara Weeks, PresidentMissouri Valley

Hello SoCal Members, at the last newsletter we seemed to be just recovering from the winter rains and cold weather. Unfortunately they were not quite finished with us yet. The “NO RAIN RALLY” was a partial rain rally this year but every one still had a great time. Many thanks to Pat & Gary Adams, Rosalie & Gene Owens and the local VFW hall, Post 1508 for hosting this event. The hall not only let us use their facility each day but fed us some great dinners of BBQ ribs and one of the best Rib Eye steaks you will ever eat. Rain or shine this is always a great rally.

Discussions continued at the Western Regional Rally about the 3 Chapter merger and we have worked out the following details. This still needs to be approved by the National Board, hopefully at the 2019 National Rally. If approved the new chapter will be called “Great Western Chapter” Bob Clapper will be the President, Richard Hunter, John Carr and a TBD will become Vice Presidents, Marilyn Wheeler will become the Trea-surer, Debbie Darby will be the “New” Membership Chair and Pat Adams as Secretary.

The Western Regional Rally had its share of rain as well but the resort and its amenities were great. Even the rain could not stop Joe Darby from making his famous garlic bread and BBQ chicken dinner on the last night. If you are traveling thru Central California you should plan to make this one of your stops. Thank you to the Rally committee of Adams, Clapper’s, Darby’s and Scott’s for planning and executing a very successful rally which included raising $3000.00 for the ACA Scholarship Foundation.

Most likely by the time you are reading this we will have just completed the National Rally in Lake Conroe, TX.

An August Rally is in the works and will be hosted by Jon and Brooke Wollam. The site will be the Yank’s RV Resort in Greenfield, CA. This is just a short drive from the Monterey Peninsula which is one of the most beautiful areas of California. The dates are now set for August 15th thru 18th. www.yanksrvresort.com

Southern California September 1 – 4, 2019 will be at the Jackson Rancheria RV Resort hosted by Craig Ortet and Chris. This is a very nice resort with modern amenities and an Indian Casino on the property. There is an all-you-can-eat Lobster buffet that we may be attending as well. https://www.jacksoncasino.com Jerry Scott has reserved October 11-13, 2019 for a return rally to the Tapo Canyon facility to attend the Ronald Reagan Library. There are 16 sites with full hook-ups.

Rally registration for these upcom-ing rallies will be posted after the National rally in May.

Hello all you Happy Wanderers out there. We hope you all had a great winter and are now getting ready to head out to all the ACA Rallies the chapters have planned for the summer months.

By the time you read this the 2019 Montgomery, Texas ACA National Rally will be just beginning and we hope everyone will have a great time. Betty and I have to rush home to Grayling, Michigan for our granddaugh-ter’s high school graduation the first of June; that’s why we couldn’t stick around after the rally.

We want to welcome these new members of the Happy Wanderers. They are:From Florida:Russell & Debra Seefried, Gary & Frances Nicholson, Ruben & Terry Rivera,Roger & Kimberly Roy, Keith & Lynnea Landers, Hall & Mary Overeall. From North Carolina:Gary & Kathy McMillan, Donald & Virginia EitnerFrom Minnesota:Gary & Pat Morrison

The Happy Wanderers are in need of a new Treasurer. If someone in the chapter would be interested, contact myself, Brian or Candy Diggins about taking over that position. The present treasurer is Rita Adams who sadly lost her husband Gene and she would like to pass the position on since she no longer has a motorhome and will no longer be traveling with the Happy Wanderers. Thanks for hanging in there Rita, we’re trying.

We will be on our way to the Montgomery, Texas, Lake Conroe KOA directly from Punta Gorda, Florida via route 10 and as I recall the road gets rough along the way. The last time we traveled that route I thought the motorhome was going to rattle apart somewhere around Louisiana. We will make a stop to see some longtime friends in the little town of Devine,Texas just below San Antonio before the final leg of our journey to Montgomery.

Just as a matter of interest you might want to take in a few sights that we see traveling back and forth from our home state of Michigan to Florida. Just outside of our

Happy Wanderers home town of Grayling, traveling down route 72 there is an unusual road sign. We are used to deer crossing signs but this sign, is a Tank crossing sign. In that area training for National Guard units take place at Camp Grayling. Camp Grayling is a premier, full spectrum, four season joint training center, providing year round training support and high quality facilities to enable military commanders and civilian leaders to meet their unit readiness requirements. The camp provides a wide variety of training such as large artillery, mortar, tank ranges, rifle ranges and maneuver courses etc.

In the Ann Arbor area, you will find Domino’s Farms which was founded by Tom Monaghan founder of Domino’s Pizza Franchises. The farm is also home to several different animals such as cattle, chickens, ducks, goats, lamas, Peacocks, Pigs, Ponies, Sheep and Badger the Cat. The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library is located in the Ann Arbor, Michigan area also.

As you travel further south you can stop at the men’s toy store Cabela’s. They have everything for all outdoors activities, fishing, hunting, camping no matter what you need you’ll find it there.

Further down the road in Wapakoneta, Ohio is the Armstrong Air and Space Museum, home of Neil Arm-strong, the first man to set foot on the moon.

That’s just a sample of the many things to see on our way down.

Your officers are working hard on the future of the chapter and we welcome any and all suggestions that may forward our progress in coming together for cama-raderie and enjoyment. With our diversity, we plan our “Rendezvous” around Pre, and/or Post, Rallies at the ACA National, Regional and other Chapter Rallies.

Until next time, consider being an officer of a fine chap-ter. Safe travels and see you at the next rally.

Greetings from sunny southwest Florida! It’s almost time to finish packing up and head north for us. It’s always bitter sweet as the winter season comes to an end as there are so many AC friends in the area. We took a quick trip to Key west and stayed at the beautiful Blue Water Key RV Resort, at mile marker 14.5, which means we were 14.5 miles north of Key West. If you have the opportunity to visit the Keys, Blue Water is a beautiful resort, only 81 or 82 sites, most on the bay or canal. And Key West is…well, Key West! Sights to see, great people watching, fantastic sea food, boating, and fun! And most famous for sunsets!

Our picnic here at River Bend was very well attended! We had 52 for lunch! Thanks to Brenda and James Anderson for helping, cooking burgers and hot dogs, and Nancy and Bill Kurkurin for a gorgeous cake! With all the great sides everyone brought no one went home hungry! In addition to our NE chapter, we had friends from Happy Wanderers, SE, and Great Lakes.

Before I close, one of our newer NE members, Carl Bullock underwent open heart surgery a few weeks back in PA. Very happy to report he is doing great, and hopes to return back to River Bend shortly to finish his recuperating, then head to the SE rally in April. By the time you read this, I’m sure he’ll be totally back on the road. We’ve had enough sad news lately, so I felt it was important to share a great report!

Hello from MacPack! Happy to say spring has finally arrived and it’s time to get those coaches moving if you haven’t been able to do so already. We were so fortunate to have 16 coaches at our spring rally at Emerald Isle, NC. If you have never had a chance to visit that area I highly recommend a trip! There’s always so much to dowhen you’re at the beach!! Following the rally at Emer-ald Isle we joined Marge and Dick Bender and traveled to Charleston, SC for a great get-together with another group.

Sarah and I had a great opportunity to visit with Melin-da and Bob Ridge at MotorCoach RV while in Florida this year. It was a great to be able to visit with MacPack friends and they were such fantastic hosts. They gave us a tour of the resort and it is truly beautiful. MacPack board members Jeff and Annette Hatfield completed building their new home and are now official residents of Virginia!

To celebrate they went to the 50th anniversary Gator Nationals in Gainesville, Florida, and then joined us in Titusville. We never realized how much there was to do in the area, but kept on the go the entire time. Visited the Warbird Museum, a must if you’re in the area. Planes all the way from WWI to present day. We also visited the Kennedy Space Center which took us back from how it all began to get a glimpse of the future.

Our last adventure took us on an airboat ride where we not only saw alligators, but were able to get out of the boat and walk near them! Happy to say everyone who got out of the boat got back on the boat!!

MacPack is growing again, and we are excited to wel-come our newest members, Don and Virginia (Gin) Eitner. We have been fortunate to have so many new members this year and are looking forward to seeing them at upcoming rallies.

Now it’s on to Texas! Until then, safe travels wherever you may roam.Trim Sawtelle, President MacPack

We had a great time at the regional rally in Paso Robles. Thank’s Jerry Scott and the whole SoCal team. The park was a beautiful new facility and the rally team did a great job with food and entertainment. As usual Joe and Debbie Darby worked their tails off and the Clapper clan did a lot of fine cooking. So, if you want to enjoy the central California wine country I highly recommend the Cabo Robles RV park.

The Three Chapter re-organization is well underway. Chapter Presidents Scott, Hunter and Caldwell will be presenting our plan to the Board of Directors at the national rally in Lake Conroe Texas. The plan has been thoroughly discussed and approved by the members at the South Dakota national rally and the Paso Robles regional rally. Essentially the three chapters will merge into one. We will recommend our new chapter be named the Great Western Chapter. We will be combin-ing the treasuries and we propose a new dues structure of $25 per year. This will make a huge territory for a chapter and we hope it will generate some enthusiasm to plan rallies in some of our far-off territory. How about we have a rally in British Columbia? How about in Montana? Our new structure as proposed will be for a president and three Vice Presidents. Bob Clapper pastpresident of SoCal has agreed to step up and be our first president. John Carr, from Norcal, and RichardHunter, from Southwest, will be Vice President‘s. The hunt for a 3rd Vice President is well under way.Bob will do a fantastic job and I have complete confi-dence in his leadership.

By the time you read this the Lake Conroe National Rally will be in the past. I’m sure it will be a greatrally as the rally committee has spent a lot of time and concentration as volunteers for you.Our next rally will be at Jackson Rancheria. Rally information and sign-up sheet will be available soon soplease come and check out a chap-ter rally and make some new friends.

Safe travels everybody,Glenn Caldwell

NorCal/NorWestHello again. I hope everyone is looking forward to Spring as much as I am. This time I am writing from the road as we have been out and about in the Southwest. Do you remember the old saying that variety is the spice of life? Do you ever stop to think how many times we do the same things the same way time after time? Certainly sometimes we do the tried and true because we like it. Sometimes we do it because it is easy. Sometimes we are just afraid to step outside the box. Yet, often times stepping outside the box brings a sense of adventure and enjoyment that we might otherwise never experience.

Over the past few weeks Gail and I have attended two ACA ral-lies. The first was the Western Regional Rally at the Cava Robles Resort in Paso Robles California. For a regional rally the turn out was small, about 20 coaches. None the less and in spite of less than ideal weather everyone had a good time. Some of us played golf, there were daily games, wine tasting and as always good food prepared by our SoCal chapter hosts. For us this event fits neatly in the box of tried and true. It brings ACA friends together in a beautiful location and they enjoy time together.

Next stop was the Southwest rally in Alamogordo New Mexico. With some creativity from past National President Bill Dettmer, we made a big step out of the box. If you read the description in the previous magazine, you know that this rally was about histori-cal education and perspective. Not to say we didn’t have our customary social hours, pot luck and dinner out, but our focus was on other very well planned events. We had excellent presenta-tions about the Apollo space program that lead up accomplishing President Kennedy’s mission to put a man on the moon. We traveled to the Trinity Site on one of only two days a year that it is open to the pubic and we traveled to the Sun Spot observa-tory high in the New Mexico Mountains. Every day trip involved a part of American history that in some way probably touch all our lives. So how many attended? Well we had 9 coaches and 20 members. Yep smaller than our first stop. Yes, we dry camped in the Space Museum parking lot and though not without a few difficulties and a call to RV Debbie, we all survived. Again, we en-joyed good friends and good times. So is there a point here? Well maybe. As we try to grow ACA and attract new members, It is my thought that we need to mix the tried and true with a little more outside the box. Instead of saying oh that won’t work or no one will like that idea, maybe we need to think a little more about how it could work. Any thoughts out there? Hope to see everyone in Lake Conroe.Rich

The Southeast Chapter has been very busy with rallies in February, April and May. In February, fifteen coaches met at Disney’s Fort Wilderness. As is reflected in one of the theme park’s name, it is a “Magical Kingdom”. So much so, that the attendees voted to return in 2020. A special thanks to Hilda Neal for all her efforts in assuring that the SEACA members were in the same general area as well as the VIP treatment she gave us and to our own Ken Browning and Johnny Spacek for serv-ing as our rally hosts. The personalized breakfasts and homemade bread pudding Ken prepared, will mark this as one of our more memorable rallies. Thank you very much everyone.

Our Spring Rally at Florida Grande rally was a sell- out. Thirty-five coaches were registered. Our rally hosts Sandra Gallup and Belinda and Terry Moorefield put together a rally full of good food, fun-filled days and great entertainment. Thanks Sandy, Terry and Belinda for all your hard work.

We are preparing for the three-day pre-rally to the national rally in Texas. We will be joined by the Happy Wanderers. Our pre-rallies are a great way for our new comers to get to know the members by attending our relaxing social hours. As this article is being written, this rally is close to being a sell-out, so if you have not made your reservations it may be too late. SEACA Vice President Ray Shea sent out a few emails reminding folks to register for the rally and sign up for any vendor work you might need done. Hopefully you followed up and got your name on all the appropriate lists. Look forward to seeing many of you in Texas. Southeast will host their fall rally in October at the Creekside RV Resort in Punta Gorda, FL. Details of this rally are outlined later in this magazine.

Southeast will again hold its Christmas rally at the award-winning Sun N Fun Resort in Sarasota FL. An-other area where there is much to do. Additionally, our rally hosts Brett & Sandy Sloan, Martin Mancuso and Bob & Sue Moore will have put together a fun filled agenda.

Southeast Plans for January 2020 are almost complete. The Happy Wanderers and SEACA are once again getting together for a pre-rally to the Regional. Registration for the 2020 Regional is available on the Southeast website. I look forward to seeing you there.

The Supershow is always a well-attended event and I am sure 2020 will be no exception. This will be our fourth annual adventure at the Supershow and each year our rallies have gotten bigger and better. Registration must be made through the Florida Recreational Vehicle Trade Association. Registration becomes available in early Fall and sells out rapidly.

Information, agenda and registration for our rallies is available at www.myamericancoach.com and www.southeastaca.net.

Welcome to Southeast’s newest members! Russ & Joyce Casella, Yorba Linda, CA and Donald & Virginia Eitner from Morehead City, NC.

We are always looking for new rally sites and new rally hosts. If anyone has any suggestions for rally locations or is interested in volunteering to host a rally, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Technical Tips #108© By Rob Lowe

Residential Fridge Conversion: A New Approach (Part 3)

This is the third of what was planned to be two Technical Tips which provide a viable option to converting an RV refrigerator from an absorption to a ‘residential’ refrigerator. In the first article, I presented the background, decision process and the actual physical conversion procedure. In the second article, l reviewed the data generated and what was learned from it, together with

some helpful information for those that decide to go with this approach. As with any change there is a learning curve and this article will include some further information that will assist those who retain an absorption refrigerator and want to make it work more efficiently. In addition, adding the following improvements to the compressor equipped, newly converted refrigerator will add value. Improving the Air Flow: One of the drawbacks to an absorption refrigerator is the fact that it is designed as a static, ice box that relies on heat being withdrawn from the insulated interior. Other than convection there is no air movement from the cooler to warmer areas inside. Therein lies a potential drawback. When the doors are open warm, humid air is drawn in and it tends to deposit water vapor on the cooling fins which develop into ice and frost. The air does not quickly circulate as it would when it is fan forced as in a residential compressor refrigerator. As with many improvements found in RVs, necessity is the mother of invention and a well designed, low current draw, easy to install fan system has been introduced by RV Cooling Unit Warehouse which is a 15” Triple Fan RV Frost Guard unit, available on Amazon. It is strategically attached to the cooling fins inside the refrigerator to move air across the fins, improving air flow and cooling throughout the refrigerator, while reducing frost build up on the fins. It has three small fans, two are on when the first switch is activated and the third is switched on by a separate switch. This improvement mimics the fan cooling in a residential fridge balancing the interior temperature while reducing frost build up. This improvement works on any cooling source (the original absorption or the compressor driven conversion). Without boring you with temperature readings taken in various areas of the refrigerator, I can assure you that the temperature is better balanced. The blue LED back light can be independently controlled, although it provides no added value other than light. Prior to the conversion, I had replaced the original incandescent light fixture in our refrigerator with a flat LED array and covered the wiring with aluminum tape which is shown in the photo. Adding Self Defrosting: With improved air circulation, I began to think it would be a simple enhancement to add a self defrosting feature. I knew that on a residential refrigerator, there is defroster timer that typically turned off the cooling unit for about an hour while an internal defrost heater is turned on to melt the ice built up. This takes place out of view behind the interior panels of the refrigerator. On the Norcold (or Dometic) refrigerators, the added fan system is powered from the coach battery, independent of the fridge controls. These fans operate whether the compressor (powered by 120 VAC) is on or not. If the compressor is turned off regularly, then the internal fridge temperature will rise slightly,

allowing the ice and frost to melt. The resultant water would flow into the tray below the exposed fins and into the small collection bucket in the exterior access compartment. I asked myself “What would happen if the compressor was put on a timer and turned off for a couple of hours overnight, each night?” Would the frost or ice buildup on the fins melt? I had to try this since while installing the fan system, with both fridge doors open, I had seen melting of the frost and ice during the 30 minutes it took to complete the installation and run the wiring. With the doors shut I knew it would take longer. I tried turning the compressor off for one hour which started the defrosting process however two hours seemed to be

better. Everything in the freezer stayed frozen so that was not a concern during the defrosting process.

To allow a timer to be installed on our coach, I had to move the Inverter powered plug (labelled ICE) away from its position tight against the exterior coach wall. This move made it possible to plug both the fridge and icemaker into the two receptacles on opposite sides of the timer and to view the timer easier. Cords were coiled up in such a way that if the timer needed to be removed to program everything could be removed to the access area as a unit. I purchased a digital timer designed to control lights and appliances (Harbor Freight Chicago Electric Part No. 95205, UPC 92363 95205). It includes a back up battery to retain the time and programming during periods when the coach is in storage and not powered. It can be programmed with up to 8 ON/OFF cycles on a daily or weekly basis. I programmed it using military (24 hour) time, (which is easier to read given the location of the timer in the outer fridge access area), rather than trying to discern the small AM or PM. I set it to turn ON at 0:00 (midnight) and OFF at 1:00(AM) on program one, then back ON at 3:00(AM) and OFF at 23:50 (11:50 PM) on program 2. The 10 minutes of off time recognized that the compressor could be running when this program turns off the unit and gives a 10-minute period where it would be off before entering the 0:00 ON period. This protects the compressor from damage. The remaining programs were not used. Installation Notes: The fan installation is quite a straightforward procedure. It comes with two side-mount brackets that are marked left and right. They are attached, in the location determined by centering the fan assembly on the fins, with Velcro® strips (included). Simply cleaning the mounting location with alcohol and holding the brackets into location using the guide tabs that are part of the brackets is all that is required. When they are secure, the fan assembly is pressed onto plastic tabs on the brackets until they lock in place. This fan unit is angled to force air over the fins, in addition to circulating air throughout the refrigerator area. The white power wiring is fed into the drain tube. On our fridge, the drain tray had to be removed to access the tubing which

meant that the shelf retaining strips on each sidewall near the door needed to be removed. With the strips off, the upper shelf could be removed giving space to remove the drip tray. Our tray was securely stuck onto the drain hose and when pulled outward, the integral plastic nipple that fit into the hose broke off. After looking at alternatives to reconnect the hose, a trip to the hardware store to purchase a 3/8”

(0.95cm) Compression Insert provided the hose connection point. The existing hole was drilled out, the insert placed in the hole and the lower lip was bent to allow the insert to lay flush to the floor of the tray. A bead of caulking was used to seal and secure it in place. Once dry, the white wire was fished through the tray, out the insert and into the hose. It was pulled through

the exterior end of the hose ready for connecting. The drip tray was reinstalled, with the compression insert pressed into the hose, then the removed shelf was reinserted into its track and the retaining strips were reinstalled. The exterior wiring entailed crimping the included piggyback connector onto the red wire, attaching the fridge power wire to this connector and inserting it onto the board connector. A supplied ring connector was crimped onto the black wire, then it was attached to a suitable metal ground. Exterior Catch Tray Modification:

The Norcold refrigerator depends on the hose from the fin drip tray to deposit water into an exterior catch tray. With the absorption system the hope was that the water would evaporate naturally from the heat generated in the absorption process. With the compressor conversion there is the potential for more frost/ice buildup to occur and a proportionately larger amount of water to be drained into the exterior catch tray. Combine that with the compressor’s much cooler operation and water can fill the tray and overflow onto the floor of the exterior compartment. The solution is to provide an exterior drain that allows some water to collect in the tray, with the overflow being directed to the exterior out the access door. Our ACA Editor (Doug Thompson) completed just such a modification and with his permission I have

incorporated his photos into this TechTip. This first photo shows the drain tray removed and a coax feedthrough bushing being inserted in a newly drilled hole about halfway up the side of the catch tray. A similar feedthrough is shown in the lower right side of the photo. (Yellow Arrows) (The compression insert I used in the drain tray repair could also be used). A clear vinyl hose is attached to the reinstalled catch tray as shown in the photo. The end of that hose is directed out the fridge access door where excess water will fall to the ground. The conversion, with these upgrades, is a very cost effective, safe, energy efficient refrigerator that will perform well in an RV environment.

Many of our coaches have ceiling fans. Unlike traditional house fans, they are very close to ceiling. As result it is easy to overlook them when we are cleaning. The best way to clean your fan is to spray the inside of a pillowcase with dusting spray (this will help clean the blades AND help repel more dust from accumulating), then cover the fan blade with the pillowcase. Gather the top of the case together and slide it off of the blade, taking all the dirt and grime with you. Re-peat on all fan blades. Then just throw the pillowcase in the wash. This chore used to take lots of time, effort, and paper towels. Not anymore. Have pillowcase, will clean!

After 35 years of owning retail stores, I know the beauty of using wax paper to clean with. Stores have lots of chrome bars, racks and cases. At least once a week I had my employees wax all the chrome in the store. I finally realized it would work just as well at home. Tear off a sheet of wax paper and wipe down all of your faucets, shower frames, drawer pulls, etc. Any metal object. It not only cleans, but it puts a small amount of wax on them which helps to keep them clean. This was especially helpful on the rods that clothes hang on, so, what the heck, I thought I would try it on my wooden closet rod in the coach….and it worked there as well. It also reduces the black hangar marks on the rods and the hangars move more freely.

Many of our coaches now have dishwashers. Unlike our household dishwashers, the ones in the coach do not get used every day. Sometimes, after sitting without use, they can become smelly! First, you should always check the filter screen for anything that might be clogging the drain. Pull the rack out and examine the drain area; make sure there are no hard chunks that can plug the drain, cause damage to the pump, or scratch dishes. Second, place a dishwasher-safe cup filled with white vinegar on one of the top racks of the dishwasher. Using the hottest water possible, run the dishwasher through an entire cycle. Except for the cup of vinegar, the dishwasher needs to be completely empty. The vinegar will help wash away the loose, greasy grime, sanitize, and remove odors.

Finally, after using the vinegar to sanitize the inside of your dishwasher, sprinkle a cupful of baking soda around the bot-tom of the tub and run it through a short but complete cycle, once again using the hottest water. The baking soda will remove any odors, and remove any stains and your dishwasher will smell fresh.

I use what I call my “Miracle Cleaner” I use the cleaning power of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide combined on al-most everything in my kitchen and things in my bathroom, too. It’s perfect for things I couldn’t get clean with traditional cleaners, such as cookie sheets, the stove top, the toaster, and serving utensils.

Here’s how: Add 1/4 cup of baking soda to a small bowl. Add a few spoonfuls of hydrogen peroxide to make a thick paste. Then, rub the paste on anything you want to clean! If the stains are particularly stubborn (like cookie sheets), spread the mixture evenly across the stain and let it sit for several hours; then wipe away.

When we travel, and go to rallies, we sometimes gather our chairs and to visit and eat and drink. This inevitably leaves us eating in a chair. Often after you’ve dripped a little salad dressing on your favorite shirt or blouse, you have a grease stain. Take that top and rub white chalk all over the stain rub and let it soak in – then wash. It will come right out.

We all travel we our devices so that we can keep in touch with home, family and news. Whether it’s your phone, ipad, or laptop, a coffee filter can be used to clean dust off of all of your dirty LCD screens. They’ll catch the dust and cut static on the screen, all without leaving behind any fibers like paper towels would. Just wipe, then toss.

When the screens in your motorhome become dusty, or are catching pet hair, the best way to clean them is to remove then and wash them. When traveling, this is not always possible. For us, the door screen seems to get the most dust. Just take a lint roller and use it to remove debris from your screens. Try attaching the lint roller to a pole if the screen door or window is tall or hard to reach.

Air, Air, Air.

It is everywhere, and we rarely even think about it. The average reasonably healthy 80-year-old will have taken 673,228,800 breaths in his lifetime. Mostly without ever thinking about where his next breath will come from. It is amazing that the human body can tolerate most any air that is normally available.

Unfortunately, that is far from the truth when talking about the air used in our machinery to operate various components. Most machines that use air, demand clean, dry air, or they will suffer a premature failure. Usually from dirty, contaminated, and wet air. But this is not to preach to you about the need to change your air filters at regular intervals, this is to describe two catastrophic failures I have had on my 2006 American Tradition that resulted in total air loss. As you know, air loss means that you very quickly lose the ability to use all service brakes. There is some reserve in the tanks, but that will be used quickly. Then with no air, the emergency or parking brake will automatically set. And there is no easy way to correct either. You are stuck wherever this happened.

The first failure happened as I was backing into my drive to park the coach. The main air line from the engine compressor to the air filter/dryer blew out, and the coach stopped there, half in the street and half in the drive. Fortunately, we lived on a dead end street, with very little traffic. Can’t imagine what would have happened if it had blown 10 minutes earlier on the interstate at 65 mph. Immediate solution was to connect my 120 V air compressor to the coach emergency air connection to release the parking brake, then carefully back into the drive.

Cause was the steel clad hose rubbing on the steel shelf. This finally wore through the steel braid, allowing the inner casing to blow out. Repair was easy. Buy & install a new hose. To prevent further friction and wearing, I first put a rubber mat on the shelf. Insulating, or putting a protective cover on this hose is not recommended, as it needs to be able to cool the hot air coming from the compressor. The filter/dryer does not like hot air.

The second failure was more difficult. It started as a small leak, where the air tanks would leak down after a couple days. With soap bubbles I found, and fixed, a couple small leaks, but that wasn’t it. Parked on air bags, they held fine, so at least I could eliminate that. Running the air brake test was no help as it showed no problem. Well maybe a little slow airing back up, but still within the specs. And the problem continued to get worse, much worse. In very slow traffic (<5 mph) with the engine at idle, and using the service brakes only, (no throttle needed) the air pressure would drop below 75 psi and to the point where I had to stop, use neutral and high idle to build the air pressure back up. More soap bubbles, to no avail. I found a very quiet spot, turned up my hearing aids, crawled all over the air system, and could not find, or hear, a leak.

ACA ACROSS AMERICA - May-June 2019 25

Page 28: The Official Magazine For Owners Of Heritage, Eagle, Dream ... · ment, ACA, 12214 Arron Terrace, New Port Richey, FL 34655 (727) 709-0218, and is funded in part by annual membership

The coach was still drivable, as long as I kept the engine RPM up. I had an appointment for engine oil change and took the coach in. Afterwards the mechanic confessed he didn’t know much about those “RV air systems”, but did hear air hissing when I backed out of the work bay. His comment didn’t sound like much, but was a huge hint for me. It only leaked when the engine was running. At higher RPM there was enough air to supply the coach, but at idle, not so. After getting back home, I left the engine running and searched for leaks. And almost immediately found air blowing out the bottom of the air filter/dryer. But by now the leak was so bad that no engine speed would air up the coach.* Pulled the filter/dryer off the coach and found that leak was at a valve assembly at the air inlet, and had a disintegrated “O” ring, which prevented it from closing. Haldex calls that valve a Turbo Cut Off Valve. Took a few days to get the new parts, and the problem was solved.

*With a bad air leak like this, it is likely that the coach cannot be aired up, and cannot be moved. However, both the inlet and outlet fittings of the filter/dryer are ½” NPT, to which the hoses are connected. By removing the fittings, the hoses can be connected together with a common ½” pipe connector. A couple bucks at any hardware store. I’ve carried one for years, and finally got a chance to use it. “For emergency use only”, as you are now pumping wet, and possibly dirty air into the sensitive air system. I hope I never need it again!

Comments and suggestions are always welcome.
