to Say not Much haS haPPened Since the LaSt edition of Frontline wouLd Be an underStateMent. With what has been described as the wettest winter in something like 13 years, the result has been busy times for SES units across the state. The general public seems to have forgotten that the state can experience some intense periods of rain and many had not prepared their homes by cleaning their gutters and ensuring drains were clear. Throw in a couple of interstate deployments, a tornado that hit Penola, a large number of trees either losing limbs or falling over, in a couple of instances proving tragic, and the odd search, and it is no wonder that you might be feeling like it has been a busy winter.

Of course, all the background activities continue and it was quite a surprise to hear that our Chief Officer Stuart Macleod announced his retirement after what has been a lifetime with the State Emergency Service. During that time, Stuart has seen the SES grow from very small beginnings as part of another department into a separate identity in its own right. While the SES may not get the large budgets other services get, it still provides a valuable service to the people of South Australia. Typically for the SES, the day put aside for volunteers to get together and wish Stuart well in retirement was one of those days across the state that saw units flat out. Still, a number of volunteers and paid staff made it to Metro South to pay their respects and enjoy a barbecue lunch with Stuart and his family.

Of course Stuart’s retirement means the process is on to find a replacement Chief Officer; combine this with the Cultural Review Forums held across the state, the launch of the SAFECOM Strategic Plan for the next five years, the inaugural meeting of the

SES Executive Advisory Group at State Headquarters, the roll out of new pagers and a Green Paper on training to name a few of the activities going on in the background.

If you have not already heard, the Executive Advisory Group replaces the Internal Reference Groups which for a variety of

reasons had limited success in moving the organisation forward. It was interesting to see the number of volunteers who did not know that the IRGs had been disbanded, once again showing that communication about how volunteers can contribute to the direction of the Service is still an area that needs improvement.

In the coming months we will be welcoming a new Chief Officer, the State Budget will have been handed down by the time this message is read and we will know the impact this will have to not only the Service as a whole, but to individual units as well.

We also see the return of the Unit Managers’ conference and the introduction of an awards night where some new awards will be handed out, so some interesting times ahead.

In closing, I would like to thank all the Association representatives who attended the review forums; many gave up a considerable amount of time, travelling to a number of different forums across the state, ensuring volunteers were able to hear from the Volunteers’ Association on a number of issues raised at these forums. Unfortunately, my untimely motorcycle

accident prevented me from getting to any of the meetings, which could have been embarrassing if it had not been for these people filling in for me. Thanks again.

Till next time.Stay safe.

heLLo again, it’S hard to BeLieve that three MonthS have gone PaSt Since the LaSt edition of Frontline, yet when Looking Back, i’M not SurPriSed that our feet have hardLy had a chance to touch the ground during thiS tiMe. I must say that the organisation does feel as though it is heading in a positive direction as we address many of the issues raised during the Cultural Review Forums.

A second round of feedback forums was conducted right across the state during June and July. It was great to see almost double the number of people attending this round of forums with all providing very constructive and positive feedback into the future of our organisation. Thanks to all who attended and/or assisted us in running these forums.

Many of the key recommendations from the Cultural Reviews revolve around training. I hope by now that most of our people have had the opportunity to read the Green Paper on training, which was developed following feedback from our people and poses options for the future of SES training. We have also started to travel the state (again), running Training Forums to gather specific feedback and input as part of this process.

Work is also under way to improve our internal communications. This work includes a raft of new policies and publications and a Members Only website which will become a “one stop shop” for SES information. These initiatives are all aimed at providing clear, adequate and timely information so that our people can remain in touch with their organisation.

I applaud the passion and the commitment of our people over this exciting time. We are well on the way to making our

organisation work as well for our people as our people work for our organisation. The next three months are going to be at least as hectic again as we work to consolidate inputs and strategies.

Whilst all this has been happening, operationally SES has seen one of its busiest three months on record. Our people have attended to almost 4,000 jobs during this time, thanks largely to two significant storm events, a raft of road crashes, general rescues and searches.

We have received many thank yous for the jobs well done, but of particular note were the acknowledgements and thanks given to SES by the Premier, the Hon Mike Rann MP, and the Minister for Emergency Services, the Hon Michael Wright MP for the exceptional manner in which SES managed the Penola storm event.

This was yet again another exemplary illustration of the capability and professionalism of our SES people and their willingness to support their communities in times of need. I must also acknowledge the fabulous support given to SES by both the CFS and MFS during these major incidents. The community of SA should be very proud of the sector-wide spirit of its emergency services.

In closing, this year’s National SES Week is being held 6th-13th November. This is a time to celebrate the tremendous

efforts of our people and showcase our fantastic organisation. I am very pleased that this year, on Saturday 6th November, we will hold the inaugural SES Award and Recognition Ceremony and of note, this will also be the inaugural induction of Life Members to SES in recognition of their 35 plus years of service to SES and the community.

Matt Maywald, as Acting Chief Officer, has certainly worked in overdrive mode to ensure that the changes so desperately needed will occur and some have been implemented already.

The Association looks forward to working with the SES and thanks the Minister for his support in what is now an exciting period as we move forward, while, of course, maintaining our key focus of serving our communities.

Coupled with the review forums, unit call-outs have been at an all time high for this period due to periods of extreme weather. But then Penola and the storms and wild weather actually provided focus on the SES and reminded our publics of the service provided within their respective communities.

Victoria’s extreme weather with the unbelievable levels of flooding has also been coupled with articles in the media on the cost to insurance companies and this has reconfirmed the fact that costs to insurers are greater with storms and flooding than those incurred from bushfires.

In July, the SAFECOM Board released the Sector’s Strategic Plan which details the strategies to be pursued together over the next five years to achieve our vision of a safer and more resilient community.

The plan is based on six focus areas of: > Leadership > Prevention and Community Preparedness > Operational Preparedness > Response > Recovery > Business Excellence

The plan was officially launched by the Minister for Emergency Services, the Hon Michael Wright, who said:

“This sector is unique. Whilst we have four agencies, your fortunes and your effectiveness in delivering vital services to the community are inextricably tied.

“The Government has recently revised the legislation to recognise that whilst you are independent agencies, you all need

to be working together, steering your boats in the same direction, towards the same port, in order to be effective.

“The more emergency service facilities I visit, and the more staff and volunteers I talk to, the more I am convinced that the way forward is to work more closely together.”

The SES is also developing its Strategic Plan as a flow on from the review and is sure to incorporate many aspects from the SAFECOM plan.

Other areas already addressed include: > The Green Paper on training which has

been out for consultation since early July and Training Forums are now occurring.

> Policy and Planning is well under way with many policies and procedures either being revamped or developed.

> Work is nearly completed on a new category for those volunteers who do not wish to take on an operational volunteering role, or even for those who wish to step back.

> Position information descriptions are being developed by VSS for leadership roles.

> And most importantly for the Association, a system has been adopted whereby all volunteers are automatically members of the Association unless they wish to “opt out”.This last change has meant that the Association has had to

change all volunteers’ access login and password to the Members Only section of our website, but this process has now been completed and the site will be updated fortnightly to ensure all new volunteers have access.

minutes from the first meeting held on 19th June 2010 > Papers for the Association’s forthcoming Annual General

Meeting on Saturday 6th November. As you can see, the Association is keen to keep volunteers

up-to-date and have input into issues that impact on us all. Communication and consultation must be a two-way process and due to our diverse backgrounds, many volunteers have excellent ideas, suggestions or recommendations, which we urge you to contribute.

Further in this issue of Frontline is an article on personal accident insurance which has been arranged as an additional cover to the provisions of WorkCover for our volunteers. Again, we have been working over the last year with State Headquarters to have this cover implemented and are pleased to see it finally coming to fruition.

SES Week will soon be here and again let’s make sure we promote the SES and recognise the invaluable work you all undertake in supporting your communities. A key focus this year will be the introduction and presentation of the first group of Life Memberships. We look forward to both recognising and congratulating the recipients.

2010/2011 STATE BUdGET

The 2010/11 STaTe BudgeT waS handed down on ThurSday 16th SepTemBer and idenTified one new SavingS STraTegy for SeS, which alSo reSolveS an iSSue ThaT we had Been Seeking reSoluTion on for Some Time, namely The SeS lighT vehicle fleeT iniTiaTive. >

t he SES will now purchase its light vehi-cle fleet (ie, vehicles less than 3.5 tonnes) rather than lease them. This will produce

recurrent savings in lease and fit-out costs as SES will be able to keep these vehicles for a longer period requiring fewer vehicle change-overs. Further work is required to determine the specifics, however, the initiative is expected to commence this financial year.

Budget papers are ava i lable f rom www.treasury.sa.gov.au and include the Port-folio Statements identifying the targets and new key performance indicators for the SES.

The leaked SBC report caused considerable concern for some of our people, but like all Gov-ernment agencies, the SES was required to put forward significant savings strategies. The State Government acknowledged the important role the SES plays in keeping our community safe and the SES was fortunate in not having to act upon the strategies put forward. <

o n the 25th of October 2010, I will be honoured to commence duties as the Chief Officer of

the South Australian State Emergency Service. I feel extremely privileged to be entrusted with the leadership of such a professional and well respected organisation. On that day, I will also assume the statutory responsibili-ties associated with membership of both the State Emergency Manage-ment Committee and the Board of the South Australian Fire and Emergency Services Commission. The South Aus-tralian State Emergency Service cer-tainly has an excellent national reputation and I am looking forward to commencing my new roles and to meeting and working with

the volunteers and staff of the Service and its supporting organisations.

I will be coming to South Australia from the Tasmanian State Emergency Service where I have held a number of appointments over

the last six years, most recently as its Assist-ant Director (Emergency Management). I have also worked with the Office of the Governor, Defence and the Department of Education where I commenced my career and spent five years as a high school teacher. In my new role, I will be working hard and using my experience from Tasmania to ensure the confidence placed in me returns benefits for South Australia, the SES and the communities it serves.

On a personal note, I have had a long asso-ciation with range of service, community and sporting organisations and have a keen interest in the outdoors and camping. My wife Mela-nie and I are both really excited about moving to Adelaide with our two children who are aged 6 and 7 – not without a little bit of trepidation as we are conscious that the next month or so will be full of new challenges.

I look forward to talking with many of you over the coming months as I get out and about the State to visit the SES Units and meet mem-bers of the Service. <

r esponse to these follow up forums was most pleasing and the only question posed, really, was based on will there

be change. The answer is yes, but as we are all aware, change will not happen overnight and of course there will be some bumps along the way.

Most importantly, we must all work together and as already stated at the forums, our objective must be: “to work together to build a contemporary and resilient SASES … one that works as well for our people as our people work for it.”

The Green Paper on training has already been distributed for feedback and VSS is developing role statements for key roles within a unit. A key part is the need for training to be delivered in a timely manner to provide the basic training skills necessary (including driver training) to become an active SES volunteer. Another aspect being implemented is that skills will be aligned to the needs and hence benefit to the local community in the first instance. Of course, specialist skills for certain roles will always continue.

The Executive Advisory Group has had its first meeting and will drive the organisation. TAGS such as RCR and VMR will continue.

The SES is developing an organisational Strategic Plan, but this won’t be finalised until the appointment of the new Chief Officer.

Streamlining of administrative procedures to assist volunteers will be ongoing and part of this will include increased use of the web; for example, all forms will be downloaded as required, which means that they can both be continually improved and will always be cur-rent when used.

Besides the recommendations, the forums also revealed:

> The Passion and commitment of volunteers > Volunteers do not have unreasonable or

extraordinary expectations of the SES > Volunteers understand that resources

are limited > Volunteers have expectations regarding

their basic training needs, the accountabil-ity of the service, equity and transparency and their recognition and general support.

world’s best organisational and leadership diagnostics. A detailed presentation of this approach will occur at the Unit Managers’ Forum in November.

Issues raised in the presentation included:cuLture:

> How people think and act each day > “The way we do things around here”

the ModeL: > Do we understand our communities

in which we operate? > Do we know where we’re going? > Are our people aligned and engaged?

Discussions then occurred on Mission, Consistency, Involvement and Adaptability, plus the grey area where assumptions are made and here they must be explored for progress to occur.

Next, culture was linked to perform-ance and competitive advantage where issues that we are all familiar with surfaced, including:

> Staff and volunteer engagement > Staff and volunteer attraction and retention > Reward and recognition > Capacity to manage change.

A first step to solve any problem or look at change required is the Cultural Forum, where honest discussions occur and action is consid-ered. Change is the next step and sometimes this can be difficult as some see the need for change in others but not themselves, even at all levels of leadership.

Change for the long term does not hap-pen overnight:

> There will be hiccups along the way > We need to develop a common language

for the organisation > We must measure and report on results

– that is both the culture and the performance. The SES has started the journey and it is

now up to all of us to ensure we succeed. <

Dean and his wife Bev are now taking a well-earned break and will travel around Aus-tralia before returning to the Unit in his other roles as a Trainer and Assessor.

The other handover saw Deputy Unit Man-ager Richard Ley hand over to Adam Shadlow. Richard was the Unit Manager from 1993 to 1997 and then the Deputy from 1997 to 2010.

Then on Thursday 15th July, Kangaroo Island hosted representatives from State Headquarters for a follow up forum on the Cultural Review and changes already being implemented such as the “Green Paper” on training which was discussed in detail. The recommendations and proposals were well received and several good ideas were put forward by volunteers in attendance.

Acting Chief Officer, Matt Maywald, also took the opportunity to present Long Service Medals which were presented to:

> 30 yearS: Dean and Beverly Overton. > 20 yearS: Anton Jamieson, Peter Brauer

In 1967, Dean was asked to train as a Res-cue Instructor, which entailed completing a 14-day full-time course and this he completed in February 1968 at the Australian Civil Defence School at Mt Macedon in Victoria. Dean has continually updated his skills and is still a qualified instructor and assessor in many skills in the SES.

t he area impacted is approximately 3 kilo-metres long and 50 metres wide. Within this area, 60 structures sustained damage.

40 of these were residential dwellings where the damage sustained ranged from windows and walls being blown out, to partial and total roof collapse.

About half of all Penola’s businesses were affected. The main street in particular was hit hard with a number of local businesses sus-taining extensive damage to their premises.

The Mary MacKillop Centre lost part of its roof and sustained some minor structural dam-age. However, the contents of the Centre were protected and temporary repairs were made to the damaged section of its roof.

At the time, SES East Region Com-mander Scott Turner said: “Crews from the State Emergency Service and the Country Fire Service worked tire-lessly last night and are continuing their work today.

“We currently have about 60 emer-gency services personnel in Penola making temporary repairs to prop-erties that have been impacted by the storm.”

He also said: “The crews have also door-knocked all affected homes and businesses in the town to assess if there is any further damage that needs to be attended to, as well as checking on the welfare of residents and business owners. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries to any members of the community or emergency services personnel. Of the 60 structural jobs, about 40 of them have been completed and crews are working through the remainder.”

The Acting SES Chief Officer Matt Maywald visited the area on the Monday with the Premier and stated “Penola’s experience shows just how much damage can be caused by extreme weather.

“In a relatively short space of time we have seen in Penola hundreds of fallen trees, build-ings being unroofed and even destroyed, which is devastating for the community.”

The visit was to facilitate a meeting with local government, community groups and gov-ernment recovery agencies to fully assess the impact of the extreme weather event and to make plans for the town’s recovery.

Penola and the other recent extreme weather events in late August-early Septem-ber hopefully may make people aware of the fact that in a typical year in South Australia, storms and floods account for well in excess of 50 per cent of the overall economic costs of all natural hazards. Simply, being prepared for extreme weather conditions such as strong winds and rain should be a high priority for all South Australians. <

a quiet Saturday night, and the pager was playing along. I know, it was too good to last. The first page was for a partially col-

lapsed house, with possible entrapment – and it was on. By the third page we had worked out that we could kiss our quiet night goodbye for keeps, had organised a second crew, and were wondering what on earth had happened. We diverted around Penola, and began dodging trees and debris.

The possible entrapment call turned out to be unfounded so we headed back into the CFS HQ to find out who had taken charge of the incident, and were then tasked to conduct a door-knock to ensure no one was hurt and alone, and also assisted to secure the worst of the debris. To our utter delight, we found that the fish and chip shop had escaped damage, and could cook in a blackout. Thanks, guys.

The coming of daylight meant that we could actually see what was going on, and begin to coordinate the response effectively. SES and CFS Incident Coordinators (Simon Poel and Fred Stent) conducted reconnaissance whilst a HQ ops team got the paperwork ready (it was in duplicate too). We had the morning’s work organised by the time the first crews turned up, and set up mixed SES/CFS work teams. This gave us a good mix of skills, equipment and manpower in each team, and its effectiveness is a credit to the SES and CFS volunteers involved.

The Mt Gambier/Millicent SES wish to give special thanks to the SES crews from Keith, Noar-lunga, Metro South and Campbelltown; the Penola CFS, as well as surrounding units; the Penola Lions Club for the great tucker, and the residents who made sure that no one went hungry or thirsty. You all made the initial recovery work a success. <

S ome of the activity was expected, as – with our help - Australia prepares for the canonisation of its first saint. The

national and international media spotlight is focusing to a large extent on Penola, the small country town in south-eastern South Australia where Sister Mary MacKillop began her work.

What no one could predict was that a devastating tornado would strike the town on 31st July, causing significant damage and creating media interest for a very different reason. We were asked to manage the flow of information for the first 24 hours, and thus reassure the world.

Some buildings associated with Mary MacKillop were damaged, but all is now back on track and we have returned to helping the Catholic Church prepare and promote an excit-ing program of festivities. <

“This significant investment follows fund-ing totalling more than a quarter of a mil-lion dollars being given to the City of Port Lincoln and the District Council of Lower Eyre Peninsula through the Natural Disaster Relief Program.

“Like many of you here this afternoon, I felt for your loss and concern at the devastation that occurred as a result of the various bush-fires that occurred on lower Eyre Peninsula in recent years.

“I am somewhat comforted by the opening today of this new Emergency Services Precinct because it represents a signifi-cant step forward in respect to our response to major incidents.

“This state-of-the-art precinct is a first for South Australia.

“Nowhere else will you find the three emergency service organisations – the Country Fire Service, the Metropolitan Fire Service and the State Emergency Service – co-located in quite the same way.”

manage incidents involving floods and those from extreme weather such as heatwaves and storms, but our volunteers also provide crucial rescue functions such as land, air and sea search, road crash rescue, vertical and general rescue. As a versatile and highly active volun-teer emergency service organisa-tion, we often work very closely with a diverse group of stakehold-ers, including our co-tenants on this site – the CFS and MFS.

“I welcome this co-location with our fellow emergency service agencies in Port Lincoln. This new

The benefits from an environment that also fos-ters strong relationships between volunteers and staff of the agencies during peace time will lead to better outcomes during times of emergencies.

“Our volunteers give freely of many hours each year to support their community in times of need.

“This facility provides our people with a base that is commensurate with their level of passion and commitment and I believe is a tangible testament to the ongoing support for volunteer emergency services by the Govern-ment of South Australia.

“In closing, I offer a few thoughts and my thanks to our Port Lincoln SES volunteers. It has been a rather long and at times test-ing year for you. In December, a devastating fire took away most of your Unit homes. You have, without doubt, demonstrated resilience and determination to regroup and in doing so, have ensured that your community has not been compromised. Today formally marks the start of the next chapter for SES in Port Lin-coln and I encourage you to make the most of opportunities as they arise.”

held at the Streaky Bay Visitor and Informa-tion Centre and provided an excellent oppor-tunity to meet and recognise volun-teers and employers. The morning tea was attended by the SAFECOM Board, the Deputy Mayor of the Dis-trict Council of Streaky Bay, Mr Greg Schreiber, and local SES and CFS vol-unteers and employers.

Anthony Rosenzweig nominated his employer Ian Beck, from Beck Brothers Mitre 10, because “it’s impor-tant that employers get recognition for letting employees go out to pro-tect their communities”. When asked why he releases employees to attend an incident, Ian said, “The volunteers do a fantastic job and it’s important for the town to be protected”.

In the evening, the Ceduna VERSP dinner was held at the joint SES/CFS/SAAS facility on Poynton Street, and

was attended by over 35 SES and CFS volunteers and employers. Other people who attended included the SAFECOM Board, Mayor Mr Allan Suter (District Council of Ceduna), Mr Peter Treloar MP (Member for Flinders) and representatives from SA Ambulance Service and SA Police.

At the Ceduna VERSP, everyone enjoyed getting to know one another over a delicious meal catered by the Sea Dragons, a group of women from the local community.

The Streaky Bay and Ceduna VERSP events were a great way to say thanks, to the volunteers who make such a big com-mitment to ensuring community safety and to employers and self-employed volun-teers who support the work of the emergency services sector. <

t he committee last met on Saturday 4th September 2010, with attendance from Clare, Andamooka, Edinburgh, Enfield,

Port Lincoln and Tumby Bay Units as well as from the SES Volunteers’ Association, Volun-teer Strategy and Support Branch and the Chief Officer. This meeting gave everyone an oppor-tunity to catch up and see what has been hap-pening within other units’ cadet programs as well as receive information from headquarters.

A number of the SCC projects have now been completed including the SES Cadet Pro-gram Resource Folder. Those Cadet Coordina-tors who were in attendance at the last SCC meeting have received their copy and for those Cadet Coordinators who could not make the meeting, these folders will soon be available through your Volunteer Support Officer (VSO). The resource folder is a great tool to use when running your cadet program; it has a number of

activities which are endorsed by SES and can be run with your cadets as well as other informa-tion around the cadet pathway, risk manage-ment and communication. You will also find the approved cadet guidelines in this folder.

The SCC were also shown promotional items which have been developed by the Vol-unteer Strategy and Support Branch and are available for all SES cadets. These items include drink bottles and key rings. There is also a new cadet brochure available, which can be used at schools, shows and other promotional events to assist in recruiting young people to the SES cadet program.

As well attending the SCC meetings, the members of this committee are planning a statewide camp for all cadets and leaders to attend. So keep an eye out for further informa-tion regarding this camp as it will be a great opportunity for both cadets and leaders to network and meet new people from differ-ent regions.

The next SCC meeting is due to be held in April 2011. All Cadet Coordinators are invited to attend so keep an eye out for the agenda early next year. If you have any queries regarding the State Cadet Committee or cadets, contact the Youth Development Officer, SAFECOM 08 8463 4106. <

a reference group, with representatives from the SES, CFS and the Volunteer Associations decided to trial a pilot

program in the Riverland where we invited both CFS and SES volunteers in the region to participate. An initial training session was

held in Berri, with a follow up session held in Renmark.

The initial training session focussed on ways the future leaders of the emergency services could engage with the more expe-rienced leaders in non-operational areas

such as leadership and management. Par-ticipants were provided with information about what mentoring is, as well as strate-gies on how to set goals and to communi-cate effectively. Mentors (people who were willing to share their knowledge and experi-ences) were matched up with Mentees (the volunteers that wanted some assistance with achieving their goals) and the mentoring process began.

The follow up session looked at how the mentoring process was going, any barriers people may have had, any successes people may have had, and ways to improve the pro-gram so we are able to make it available to all volunteers around the state. The partici-pants were enthusiastic and provided some great ideas which we intend to use when we come back and visit the Riverland in a few months’ time.

lETTErS

lETTErS31st August, 2010

Dear SES,I am writing in appreciation of the efforts of your people, I believe the Yankalilla Unit, in assisting me down from the peak above Wirrina Cove marina on 12th July.

The delay in writing has been due to my wanting to get photos printed, but in the finish I got only one

done because most would not have meaning. The one I did get done had to be professionally adjusted due to being on an angle; it was taken by someone from the Wirrina Cove resort who was unfamiliar with my camera. This chap had managed to climb up to me and stayed there while the rescue was effected.

In retrospect I realise that the problem was due to the soles of my shoes being too slippery, and those shoes went into the rubbish after I returned home. It was embarrassing to have to call for assistance,

but better to be embarrassed than to risk sliding down the hill and being injured and having to call on medi-cal services.

Would you please pass on my thanks, beyond what I conveyed at the time, to those involved. I under-stand that the SES is Government funded and thus a donation would not be meaningful, but if there is some tangible way in which I can express my appreciation I would be pleased to know about it.

Yours faithfullyMalcolm Hutton

eMergency ServiceS PraiSed for their effortS

Hon Michael WrightMinister for PoliceMinister for Emergency ServicesMinister for Recreation, Sport & Racing

Monday, 6th September, 2010

Minister for Emergency Services, Michael Wright today thanked emergency service volunteers and workers for their efforts following the severe weather that swept across South Australia over the weekend.

Members of the State Emergency Service, MFS, CFS and SA Police responded to over 2,000 incidents during the weekend bout of wild weather, which saw wind speeds of up to 106kph.

Volunteers rushed to incidents where large trees were uprooted, roofs ripped off homes, trees fallen on cars, buildings damaged and power lines strewn over main roads.

SES crews were also instrumental in the suc-cessful search for the missing hikers in the Flinders Ranges on Saturday and the SES Swift Water Rescue team, assisted by the STAR force, led the rescue of a couple from Sturt Creek after they slid down a steep embankment.

Mr Wright said it was a tremendous effort for

volunteers to brave such conditions.“Our emergency services personnel are highly

trained and professional and ready for the challenges that nature throws at them. Their commitment to helping and protecting the community is beyond question,” Mr Wright said.

“We’re extremely fortunate to have such selfless individuals at the ready.

“They give their time without expecting anything in return, other than the satisfaction of helping those in need. I thank them wholeheartedly for the impor-tant contributions they make on a regular basis to the community,” Minister Wright said.

“SES units across the state were kept extremely busy over the weekend with SES Central Region handling about 1,100 responses, SES East Region 150 and SES North 170.

“SES volunteers have now attended to more than 4,000 incidents so far this year compared to an aver-age of about 6,000.

“Floods and storms have the potential to cause major damage. People do not always realise how important it is to consider the impact of floods and storms,” Mr Wright said.

South Australians are reminded to make sure their homes are prepared for severe storms. Further information on preparing your home from storms can be obtained at the SES website http://www.ses.sa.gov.au.
