We can no longer refer to the office of the future without mentioning a home office. More and more people are setting up a permanent place to work at home, whether inside or out. Garden offices are therefore becoming really popular. In order to satisfy the growing and sudden demand the London agency Boano Prišmontas has come up with ‘My Room in the Garden’, a modular pod that you can put together yourself in just 1 day. The design is also in the running for an award at the London Design Festival.

“People need their own space to work at home, but not everyone has the room and budget to turn an entire room or garden shed into an office. This design provides a solution”, says co-founder Jonas Prišmontas.

“It is neither a container with windows, nor a garden shed like the ones you can buy in a DIY shop”, says Tomaso Boano from Boano Prišmontas. “We have created a modular system that you can easily build and adapt yourself. The result is a com-fortable and cosy workspace that can be installed wherever you like.”

The choice of materials plays an essential role in this project. The team specifically chose modular wooden walls, available in different formats and sizes to suit the available space. The small office measures 1.8 by 2.4 metres (5 ft 11 in by 7 ft 11 in) and is 2.5 metres (8 ft 2 in) high. The inside of the room is made entirely of wood and features corner profiles on which to attach a desk, shelves or storage.

Seventy per cent of those participating in a Dutch study* believe that activity-based working is good for productivity. The brand-new office of FlightHub, the Cana-dian online airline company, is a perfect and pioneering example. The open space is divided into different compartments, perfectly suiting the company’s specific requirements.

The layout is like a large circle, subdivided into compartments. The ‘inner circle’ is a central, communal area around the lift. This accommodates the reception, a fully-equipped kitchen, a games room and lounge area. Around this core, in the ‘outer circle’, lie a variety of small, individ-ual rooms, larger, communal work zones and meeting rooms. The communal areas are flexible and can be further divided into smaller compartments: handy for a personal discussion or to stay focused.

The different zones blend seamlessly from one into the other thanks to different materials and colour tints. Matt glass (canal blank) is used as the partition between private zones and communal areas. This allows lots of daylight in, whilst also forming both a visual and acoustic buffer between each space. Aluminium foam is also used here and there as an acoustic barrier, in playful reference to the aviation industry.

FlightHub’s new concept was completed in April 2020. This means that the design was made before there was any talk of social distancing rules due to COVID-19. Even so, the office is still able to satisfy such rules: there is sufficient space for people to keep their distance, and every part of the company can be reached from two directions.

Don’t delay in discovering our WOODCOUSTICS, acoustic wooden panels with which we combine the beauty of wood with effective reduction in the reverberation of voices. Are you looking for a simple and clean 1-colour wood look? Combine the panels with cladding and floors in the same colour.

Co-working is hot. In the space of three years, the number of people working in a co-working space has risen from 1.2 million (2017) to 3.8 million (2020)*. Meanwhile, large hotel chains are devoting much attention to this opportunity. It is becoming an increasing part of their business. ‘Co-working hotels’ are exciting locations in which to work alone or hold meetings.

These days, business travellers are very demanding when it comes to their choice of hotel. It has been a long time since people were simply content with a reliable Wi-Fi connection and a quiet room. They also expect well-equipped and comfortable communal work zones. Along with a wide range of services, such as ergonomic rooms and catering facilities. For this reason, large hotel chains are tending to create comfortable co-working zones as part of their business. The spaces target not only travellers, but also local employers.

This was the reason for the Sheraton Hotel, part of Marriott International, to kit out its lobbies with ‘productivity tables’, complete with a USB connection, rentable drawers and plenty of electrical sockets. In their Moxy Hotels, Marriott International has co-working zones which are comfortable, modern workstations by day, and in the evening are transformed into areas for relaxation or even parties. In the Austrian Hotel Schani Vienna, profes-sionals can purchase a 10-day co-working pass. The AccorHotels chain is also focus-ing much attention on this growing trend.

So, co-working hotels are providing new opportunities to work quietly alone or in groups. This also creates opportunities to network and relax. In other words, they satisfy the requirements of a home, quiet workplace, meeting place and leisure facility. And all under one hotel roof.
