It appears that our strictures were not premature, and our warning opportune. During the past month the head scholar has spoken ; and, although wo expected some novelties, his deliveranco has outdone our most extravagant expectations. The liberal and too- confiding committee of the Spiritualist Association, invi- ted Mr. Jas. Smith to conduct their service on Sunday October 13th, and that gontleman having no restrictions placed upon him, availed himself of the opportunity to announce to the world the divine will and intentions as revealed through their special oracle, the gist of the lecture was as follows :—■“ That God had orig- inally intended that mankind should live in harmony and not stray from the right path ; that in spite of His incessant efforts to keep him on the track, he would con- tinually stray right and left, God had tried various means at divers times, he had not only sent his angels to be in- carnated in human form from time to time, but had re-incarnated the stray sheep over and over again, but his efforts were ineffectual to check the determination of man to disobey his laws, they had slaughtered the bodies of the incarnated angels, and the re-incarnated humans *s a rule were not improved, hence sin and vice were rampant and on the increase, and God’s patience being well-nigh exhausted, it was his intention to bring matters to a climax, He would withhold his wrath for a short time and give us one more chance, which was to be the •wt, and all those who did not avail themselves of it were to be burnt up into nothing, by a wave of mag- netic fire! "We did not clearly understand bow we were to escape this unpleasant denouement, but in a letter from Mr. Smith, which appears in the Daily Telegraph of October 17th, the oracle speaks more distinctly. In this extraordinary letter we are told that “The truths (sic) delivered at the Masonic Hall have no relation, and are wholly repugnant, to Spiritualism ; that the writor is not and never was a Spiritualist; that the spirits have been trooping to the earth for the last twenty-five years in obedience to a law of which they are ignorant (but which, of course, the oracle knows all about) in order that they may bo re-incarnated, and receive as every human spirit that has ever lived is about to receive — The final judgment in the flesh ; when those who ac- cept the offer of the Father’s love will go into everlasting life; those who are incapable of receiving it, by reason of continued actB of disobedience through a succession of incarnations, will go into everlasting death, they will be obliterated from the book of life.” The oracle proceeds— “ I have said that the human race has reached the term of its existence on the globe," &c. &c., and then explains that the only hope of safety lies in our realizing a condition of utter holplessness befdre God, until wo be- come fit tabernacles for the Holy Spirit, when we shall be able to pass scathless through that wave of magnetic fire which seems to have occasioned the editor so much amusement. But this amusement, the sceptical editor is told, will suddenly be transformed into consternation ore long. A little further on we are informed that the Divine Spirit was not incarnated in Jesus until he was thirty years of age—this information should be inter- esting to orthodox Christions. It appears that we are so “ blinded by materialism, and deafened by tho din of worldly pursuits, that we have failed to observe the in- dications of the coming wave— to wit, “the volumes of magnetic fire being projected from the sun, the forest fires in America, the number of- deaths from sunstroke in temperate regions, and the increased number of earth- quakes,” The concluding portion of the letter contains the pith of it, for the writer says, “If what he has spoken is of and from himself it will come to naught, and he will be branded as a monomaniac and derided as a vis- ionary ; but if it is the Father [speaking through him, then all the pulpits, newspapers, and Spiritualists, .will not prevail against it. Of this we have no doubt, and we leave it to the discrimination of an intelligent public to discern between the fanaticism of man and the voice of God.

I t is , indeed, a lam entable sigh t when m en o f

th e stam p o f M r. Jam es Sm ith descend from th e em in­

e n ce whence th ey have been resp ected , to th e plane of

th e unreasoning fanatic. M an y will m arvel how this

can be, b u t to those acquainted with psychological or

biological phenom ena th ere is little to m arvel a t . I t is

a com paratively easy m atter for one pow erful m agnetizer

to bring a num ber of subm issive subjects under his or

h er psychological influence, which, if refreshed a t in te r­

vals, enables th e op erato r to suppress som e facu lties, and

brin g o u t others, m aking th e subjects m ere in stru m en ts

in th e ir hands, u ltim ately destroying th e equilibrium

o f th e brain. D u ring th e earlier portions o f th e initia­

tion , and while th e con tro l is weak, th e su b ject is

exh o rted n o t to read o r endeavor to work o u t any diffi­

cu lt problem , le s t th e positive actio n o f th e brain should

neu tralize th e m agnetic influence ; m eantim e th e unfor­

tu n a te victim becom es less and less able to resist, until

a t last th e op erator’s thoughts, ideas, and oven words, becom e th eir’s. T he m agnetizer says— “I am a sp irit from

th e sun,” and straigh tw ay it is accep ted and believed.

T h ere is n eith er desire o r pow er to resistan d un til th e spell

a lity is lost. I f th e su b ject has in te lle c t he will elab orate

th e ideas im pressed upon the m ind, and by garn ish in g them

u p in flowery lan guage fascin ate a few weak m inds who

m ay have had a leaning to som e o f th e ideas presented.

This wo believe to be th e tru e solution o f th e affair ; w e have th e testim on y o f several neoph ytes who w ith­

drew in tim e; o f th e pow erful m agnetic influence b ro u g h t

to bear, also as to th e modus operandi. T h ere has been

a very general im pression abroad th a t th e so-called m ag­

n e tic school was a sp irit circle , and enq uirers, especially

from th e cou n try , Bought to gain adm ission to its m y ster­

ies. N ow th e ir speaker has endorsed ou r disavowal o f

th em wo have nothing fu rth er to do with th e ir id eas or

follies ; b u t wo Btill hold o u t to them th e hand o f sym ­

p ath y, and tru s t th at, a t som e fu tu re day, th e lig h t o f

reason will replace th e darkness o f blind faith , and

enable a t least som e o f th em to be w h at th ey on ce w ere,

v iz : helpers in th e work o f Spiritualism , free th ought,

and religious progress.

A n d all to be done w ith o u t in th e le a s t imperilling his ow n u ltim ate happiness— his ow n soul was secure, al­th ou g h , os a su b stitu te , i t sh ou ld h av e been damned, and th e p lace o f th e seco n d p erson o f th e T rin ity left for e v er a blank in th e co u rts o f heav en . A s i t re­fers to a qu estion o f som e im p o rta n ce , a n d on which we h av e n o t exp ressed o u r view s, w e th in k i t advisable to supply th e om ission. B u t I m ust crow d the facts and incidents I propose to give m ore closely . O f course I can n o t se t down all, n o r even half, in an article like th is, intended to be brief, which was elicited during an investigation k e p t up day a f te r day for th ree weeks.

I saw many strange faces a t the aperture ; some days from ten to fifteen or twenty, the most o f whom were recognized by some one or more present in the circle. I t was near a week after the appearance o f the Bister ju s t alluded to, before I recognized another face, yet a number of apparitions professed to recognize me. At length two other sisters succeeded in materializing them­selves, and appeared side by side a t the aperture. The recognition was undoubted, my Bister at my side recog­nizing them at the same moment I did. And strangers present remarked upon the family resemblance. But the certainty was made doubly certain when the appari­tion mentioned incidents in their earth-life and ours which we readily and vividly remembered.

A few days subsequent, ou r m oth er appeared, threw open th e door o f th e cabin et, and show ed h erself to us from head to foot.

Six tim es during th e th re e weeks an old acqu aintance, who died a m aterialist, appeared to m o, looked and talked n atu rally ; referred repeatedly to his m aterialistic notions, and how unhappy th ey m ade him. Said m uch ab o u t his p resen t condition, and its advantages over th e form er ; tried to givo me an idea o f spirit-life, th e pursuits, plea­sures and am usem ents o f spirits, as well as th eir in stitu ­tions for doing good, ed u catin g th e ignorant, and lifting higher the low and debased.

The voices now w ere all hu shed, e x ce p tin g th e one in command. A t a w ord from him , th is m edium floated over our heads, beggin g th e up lifting pow ers n o t to le t her fall, and resp ond in g to o u r q u estion s w ith som e trepidation w h ile b ein g th u s w afted alo n g th e ceiling, sketching th e re o n w ith pen cil m ark s th e g eo g rap h y o f her aerial v o y a g e .

The medium was now replaced in her chair, in the center of the room, complaining of no bodily injury but a terrible “ scare,” which, however, subsided as soon as the light was introduced.

The ceiling was now examined, and found to be pretty well covered with pencil marks. The pencil I gave Mrs. Hollis was worn to the wood, with lime dust covering the shoulder of it, and lime dust also found on the hand of the medium, and on the dress sleeve of her Jgh t arm.

The utmost limit of time allowable to Mrs. Hollis’s second visit to Cincinnati had now been reached, and on the following day she returned to her home, her family, and her friends in Louisville, Kentucky.

I. will now ask the reader a question or two before taking leave of this interesting subject. The phenomena I have attempted faithfully to record have a more than common interest to mankind. Several questions arise spontaneously in the mind after looking over the whole subject, and they will demand of every man an answer until his soul shall be satisfied with the integrity of his raphes. I f the foregoing statements are true, can we come to any other conclusion than to admit the existence of a spirit-world, and its propinquity to this; and that death simply liberates the spirit from its “ ball of clay,” »nd opens the flowery portal through which it passes into the more beautiful world ? I f the foregoing statements ®ra true, can we come to any other conclusion from the testimony presented, than that our spirit-friends have succeeded in repassing the borders of death, to assure n* of the continuousness of life, and that the relationship o* the two worlds are as intimately maintained as snh- «tence and shadow ?

I f the foregoing statements are true, can we come to nny other conclusion than that the popular conception °* death and hell, and the judgment is a lie that encrusts

This is tho first event of the kind occurring since the Universalist body has been in existence. One marked feature at the attendance was the entire absence of the usual habiliments of mourning amongst those of the friends who are avowed Spiritualists: even the ladies possessed the moral courage to run counter to the pre­vailing fashion of dressing in black; the gentlemen wearing their hats during the whole service.

T h ird ly , th ey discouraged in dividua l effort b y insisting on m an’s utter helplessness. T h a t was only a p a r t o f gloom y Calvinism in disguise. P o o r hum anity had been to o lo n g trad u ced , an d preven ted from p u ttin g forth th e pow ers it possessed. I t s “ im potence, ign oran ce, helplessness, a n a depend­e n c e ” had been im pressed upon it so long from tho pu lp it th a t th e y could n o t w onder a t so tow m aking m anly efforts to raise them selves. T h ere was no evad­in g th e logical re su lt o f th e p reach in g up o f m an’s in­ability to do an y good th in g o f himself, which was to th ro w tho responsibility o f his lo t on his M aker. I t w as pitiable to see mon o f once liberal view s go in g back to th ose p ernicious d o ctrines o f a n irration al and h eart­less th eolo gy. T he old ad ag e w as still tru e , th a t God helped th ose who helped them selves. In stead o f reviv­ing, in tho g arb o f roligious liberalism , th e debasing doc­trin e o f m an’s helplessness, th ey w ould do infinitely m ore good by try in g to develop th e la te n t pow ers and g lori­ous possibilities o f his G od-given n atu re , and th a t could be done w ith ou t fostering a sp irit o f in so len t self-suffi­cien cy . F o u rth ly , they taught hu m ility a n d obedience on a p r in c ip le very liable to be abused, a n d lead to unhappy consequences. A ll o u g h t to be as “ li ttle ch ild ren ” in sim plicity, in in n ocen ce, in openness to conviction , and in 'freedom from tho unreasoning bias th a t often sw ayed ad u lts ; b u t som ething m ore and w orse th an th a t was m ean t by m an y who w ished to m ake m en children. T hey m u st be like children in accep tin g everyth in g in blind unquestioning tru s t, w hich th e ir self-appointed teach ers se t before th em ; and in stead o f becom ing free-m inded, self-relian t, progressive m en, th ey becom e religious slaves. T he C ath olic C h u rch had e v er assu m ed a p atern al ch arac­t e r and functions. A s children th e ir “ gh ostly fa th e rs ” m ade th em believe, and did w ith th em w h at th ey chose. T o doubt, reaso n upon, o r re je c t an y th in g th e ir spiritual teach ers advanced w as to in cu r th e ir high displeasure, a n d risk a glorious heaven. A n d , p ractica lly , th e re was b u t little difference betw een th e m enchildren o f th e C ath olic C h u rch and th e pupils o f th e M ag n etic School. T he childhood o f hu m an ity m u st be ou tgrow n . I t was high tim e it began to cu ltiv ate and develop a ll th e pow ers o f full-grow n m anhood. God was n cot like a blundering m echanic, liable to smash tho work o f h's-'s hands in a fit o f rago, because it did n o t answ er his e x p e c ta tio n s . T h ere was no fear o f his w reaking his v e n g ean ce on this beautiful world, which we could n o t b u t beliovo was -ful­filling its intended mission as p a r t o f his works, w ithout im peaching his infinite perfections. Seventhly, they p ro ­nounced a doom f o r a large portion o f the hum an fa m ily , which it was utterly inconsistent with the wisdom and good­ness o f Qod to suppose would ever be inflicted. T he old dis­mal figure o f “ annihilation ” was th e la test novelty of tho M agn etic School. A fow wooks ago, re-incarnation was the inviting prospect held o u t for all tho “ disobo- dient.” A nd for w h at w ere tho g re a t bulk o f mankind to be annihilated ? Ju stb ecau B e they hod n o t heard and obeyed the “ voice o f th e F a th o r ,” ns a fow o f his chil­dren understood it. Plainly and logically p u t, G od was going to destroy m ost o f hiB children, becauso ho had not Bpoken loudly enough to m ake them hear, o r plainly onougli to make them understand, o r authoritatively ouough to m ake them obey H is fatherly will. T he know­led ge and m ental experien ce acquired in th is process ought* to be m ade o f serv ice to a fellow tru th -seek er w hen beset by th e sam e o r sim ilar difficulties; b u t we have such a disinclination to go again drudgingly over th e sam e ground, e ith er to assist o th ers o r to review our own position, th a t conservatism , dogm atism , and im pa­tien ce o f contrad iction, are ap t to bo n atu ral results. H ow few a re fit to have th e ch arg e o f teach in g children, on acco u n t o f th is very d efect ? W hen we a re discu ss­ing any point w ithin ou r own m inds, o r with an o th er b e n t in tne sam e direction, th e love o f tru th , and the desire to know, m ay op erate with fairness and freedom from in toleran ce, because th ere is no provocative to th e co n trary ; b u t i t is a m atter o f g re a t difficulty to give im partial consideration to th oughts w ithin ourselves, m uch less to argum ents presented by others, w hen they a re calculated to u p set preconceived ideas. T he im pru­dence o f being dogm atic (as if ou r presont convictions could, even to ourselves, bo a final se ttlem en t o f any q u estion ), is frequently illustrated in thoso who a re given to speak on impulse. A n idea strik es one with an am ount o f lucidity which appears irresistible, i t is insisted upon w ith a proportionate am oun t o f self-assertion and confi­dence, and aftor all but li ttle a rg u m en t m ay bo required to mako th e notion ap p ear perhaps ridiculous. The caution this teach es is necessary to bo observed with reg ard to all opinions, how ever carefully arriv ed at'. Positivism o f any description ap p ears to m e to be irre- concileable with freedom o f T hou gh t, since to bo tru ly positive is to bo final. Positivism m ay be so fa r free th a t i t does n o t in sist upon a b elief w ith ou t supplying th o reasons which m oke th e b elief for th e tim o being im p era tiv e ; but th e positivism which m akes th o co n ­clusion o f any dem onstration absolutely final cre a te s intoleran ce. W e m ay lay down certain rules ns tho b est known m ethod o f tru e re a so n in g ; w e m ay feel bound to accep t certain principles and definitions ns axiom atic, solf-ovident tru th s , sinco we are incapable of conceiving o f anything to th o co n trary ; we a re obliged to receive as m atter o f fa c t th a t am ou n t o f com mon ex ­perience which scionce accep ts as th o basis o f its m easurem ents and sp ecu lation s; b u t how far th ese m ay bo positively final, i t would bo im possible to Bay. W o can n o t have positive conceptions o f to tal n atu re, o r o f God, since a finite m ind can n ot grasp Infinity. N o r can wo have positive conceptions o f any p a r t o f N atu re if we believe th at evory p art is affected by relations as infinite as the to ta lity o f n atu re . I t would req u ire “ a G enius oqual to the M ajesty o f N a tu re ’ ’ to com prehend, in all its bearings and im portance, th e sm allest idea or particle. T h a t N atu re can n ot lie, m ay im ply a positive tru th , but i t is impossible for finite m an positively to declare w hat N a tu re does, o r does not, say . T o say th a t w e eat, sleep, die, and so on , a r e n o t th e fa cts them selves, b u t term s which re fe r to facts, ab o u t which wo know very littlo positive besides. T h e dogm atism o f a scientific school is difficult to be overcom e, a fte r one m ay be freed from th o dogm atism o f a theology. So fa r i t has a claim on hum an re a so n ; b u t, being once accep ted , th e ten den cy is n o t to discuss a new th eory w hich m ay be presented , b u t to defend th e old. M otives, id en tical in n atu re , impress different individuals to very differen t ends, Tho same idea, o r m en tal im pulse, be i t th e insp iration o f an angel, o r th e com m unication o f a fe llo w m an , in d ifferen t minds m u st cre a te very different effects, in proportion as vary th e different in terests a t stak e , th e different organisms, and th e association o f ideas in th e variou s minds. T he first aw akening o f a conscien ce in man with reg ard to su ch m a tte rs ¡8 to su rro u n d th e killing and plun dering o f his hostile fellow m an with chival­rou s and virtu o u s n o tio n s, stud ied as a science, and ta u g h t as p a r t o f religion . T h e lo w er anim al is inca­pable o f com m ittin g su ch m oral w ron g, and m an seems incapable o f discovering rig h t, e x c e p t by th e perpetration o f stupendous erro rs . H is con scien ce, and therefore his im pressions, v a ry w ith every p h ase o f his existence. S o ciety can only be cem en ted by law s as inviolable in th e ir n atu re as a re tho law s o f p h ysical creation ; and, as a know ledge o f th e physical law s is obtained by means o f deop research and scientific e x p e r im e n ts ; so, a know­ledge o f social law s is obtained by a progressive social science, p receded and accom p anied by social experim ents. A s a p a r t o f th is p rocess, m an acq u ires notions o f what is due to o n e ’s s e lf and to so cie ty , and th is form s the consciousness o f r ig h t and w ron g. I f th e conscience be tru ly inform ed, m an ’s im pressions w ill be in th e right direction, and th o co n tra ry w ill be th e case if the con­scien ce be inform ed w rongly. K n o w led g e can only be progressive and cum ulative. C re a tio n itse lf has been, is, progressive an d cum ulative. P h y sical creation developed in to order o u t o f w h at m an ca lls chaos. In­tellectu al know ledge is developing in to sy stem and order o u t o f w h at to us seem s chaos. H u m an sym pathies and affections— religious and social— a r e progressively de­veloping. S o ciety develops o u t o f ch ao s a n d confusion — a confusion g e ttin g “ w o rse confounded ” as social com plications in crease, and b y th is m eans m an is "m ade p e rfe ct th ro u g h suffering ”— by o u r ow n “ stripes we a re healed.” P h ysical n a tu re a n d m o ral n a tu re , physical and in tellectu al m an, a re developed by p rocesses which a re in h eren t in th e n a tu re o f th in g s, unavoidable and irresistible. T h ese progression s go on indifferent to the n ecessary incidents o f individual sacrifices— “ Tis now a bubble b u rst, and now a w orld .” I n th e in ferior phases o f social e x is te n ce th e sp ectacle ¡ b hideous a n d painful to w itness— th e y a re consciou s sen tien t beings who suf­fer. I n discussion w e frequently forget th is dual n atu re , and we th in k o f ad­dressing th e in tellect only. I f ou r desire be to con q u er in argum ent, this m ethod m igh t be su fficien t; b u t if wo desire to produce full conviction we can n o t ignore th e sentim ents. Beligion in p articu lar possess such a hold o f th e affections th a t in m any cases m inds have to be treated w ith g re a t delicacy , and alm ost hum oured into ration al habits o f thinking. I t is to no good purpose to tr y and prove how absurd m ay be a person’s orthodox beliefs. M any would p refer n o t to h ear reason a t all, th an subm it th e ir religious feelings to w hat to them w ould be ou trage. A n arg u m en t m ay a t once c a rry w ith i t all th e lucidity th at is in tellectually necessary, but i t m ay require tim e and rep etition to .bring th o sentim en ts in to accord with th e understanding. In m any, perhaps m ost, instances this is never fully accom plished. Y o u th ­ful train in g has so deeply affected m inds, th a t although the in te llect for years m ay have regu lated th ought and con d u ct, y e t in situ ations o f dan ger, o r on death-bed, the im pressions o f y o u th aw aken in all th e ir en ergy and, in spite of' reason, ca rry all before th em . T he mind seeks sh elter in its prim itive faith, w hatever th a t m ay be, Pagan o r C hristian , o r is w recked in th e whirlpools o f despair. A deathbed conversion and a deathbed despair, in­stead o f being w arnings ag ain st free-th ou gh t and the ration al doubt called scepticism , a re terrible instances o f th e injuries done to ou r n atu res by tam perin g with the youthful mind, and reducin g i t to a s ta te o f slavery which its m anhood m ay n o t bo able to shake off, although ear­n estly and painfully striving fo r freedom . T ak e, for in stance, a person whose mind has been poisoned by n u r­sery ta lcs o f hobgoblins and apparitions. T he ad u lt m ay have reasoned him self o u t o f all belief in th e tru th o f such stories, and so long as he is un tried , he m ay think th a t his in te llect haB gained th e m astery over his em o­tions. W e find th e nbove reflections and questionings in the colum ns o f th e A tch ison (K a n .) Cham pion. They are from th o h e a rt o f a sorrow ing p a re n t, whose soul is h u n g ry fo r heavenly know ledge o t th o dead. Christian faith fails to answ er th e se “ questionings,” and only differs from A th eism in th e d eclared m ysteries of a Goa th rou gh faith in his blood. A th eism says to this sor­row ing soul, “ Y o u r li ttle P o t his dead,— silent,— forever in tho grave, w ith no m ore pain, g rief , sorrow o r joy. Y o u can see th e p lace w here its li ttle cask et is laid in tho d u st. H is li ttle voice is s ilen t fo r ev er.”

This conclusion th e p a re n t’s sou l re je c ts . Tho mys- te y o f faith is oqually u n satisfacto ry , as evinced by the “ questionings.” Spiritualism an sw ers every question, solves th e hidden m y ste ry , and declares th ere is no death. I t is impossible to rise from a perusal o f th is anonym ous “ d ram atic poem ” w ithout feeling th a t i t h as been under­taken recklessly, and w orked o u t carelessly b y one o f th e m any “ phaetons ” o f politics and lite ra tu re “ who, w ith hands unfitted to th e task, a tte m p t to drive th e ch ario t o f th e sun, who fail to see (to use th o w ord s o f a S p irit com m unication) th a t C reation is a ch ain o f u n ­conn ected and in terdepen den t links.
