Happy Easter!

There are times when we are taking registrations for programs such as Religious Ed or finalizing the commitment process for Catholic schools when the process is drawn out…I realize that fami-lies get a lot of requests, but let me urge you to respond to our requests promptly…it is not easy to plan a Ladies’ Guild breakfast without some idea of numbers, to recruit volunteer teachers, to plan budgets without having the best input we can have…so please don’t bury that form to be filled out, don’t delay in calling and reserving a spot…you can help us a lot by being as responsive as possible.

Case in point is the Ladies’ Guild breakfast on May 17 after the 9:00 am Mass…please call Lillian at 381-3202 or Mary Jane at 381-6853 if you wish to come…this event is open to all the women of the parish.

Also Religious Ed re-registration for 2008-09 is happening now…there will be a late fee added after May 1 …so please take care of this now…also you can regis-ter any of your children, whether in Catholic schools or Public schools, for the Sacramental Preparation process for next year…if your child will be in second grade, they should be signed up for First Eucharist; if in fourth or fifth grade, register for First Penance; if eighth grade, then register for Confirmation…we usually have children who need to receive one or other sacrament at an older age…please be sure to register them now and we will work out the details later…if you are new to the parish or have a child who will be going into school for the first time, you should speak with Sue Payne our Director of Religious Ed to consider the options available.

A word about why at some Masses, we rope off pews…it is not unusual for peo-ple to come to Mass after we have begun…we close off a few pews on each side to make it more convenient for these folks to find a place to sit without being a distraction…we would ask you, if you come early or on time, to please sit in front of this area…that means some of us have to stop hugging the aisle seat, and move to the center of the pew…if week after week you find yourself in those roped off pews, please set your clock 10 minutes earlier and really break that habit of coming late…wouldn’t it be great if we were all there and able to add to the power and prayer of the opening hymn.…and if you find yourself walking out of Church before the priest-presider, stay those extra 2 minutes or 30 sec-onds so you can bump shoulders with some other parishioner…and the presider can say ‘Good Day’ to you…we all need to be encouraged to come on time, give our best selves to the prayer we offer and leave when we are done.

We will be interviewing for a part-time Pastoral Associate in May…Sr. Judy has chosen to reduce her hours next year and so we have re-defined her position…if

YOU’RE INVITED

PENTECOST SUNDAY MAY 10, 11

We would like to have some parishioners who speak a second lan-guage read the Prayers of the Faithful in their native tongue. Also, if someone would like to do one of the Scripture readings in their native language, please step forward and call the Ministry Center at 586-5675.

We need coverage at all weekend Masses:

Saturday at 4:30 pm; Sunday at 7:30 am, 9:00 am, 11:00 am, and 5:00 pm

We ask all in the congregation to wear some RED today!

Cute items from Church Bulletins

- The Fasting and Prayer Conference includes meals.

- The sermon this morning: “Jesus Walks on Water.” The sermon tonight: “Searching for Jesus.”

- Don’t let worry kill you off - let the Church help.

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament

The Blessed Sacrament is "the picture of God", "the magnet of souls" and "the very life of the church." All parishioners now have the opportunity to pray in front of our Lord on this

First Friday, May 2, 2008.

The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed beginning after the 11:00 am Mass until 4:00 pm.

There will be a sign-up sheet on the bul-letin board and two people or more must keep our Lord company each hour. Will you not spend one hour with Him?

Ascension Thursday This Week

Plan now to join us for Mass on the Feast of the Ascension. Our masses will be at 5:15 pm Wed. (anticipation Mass) and at 6:45 am, 9:30 am (School Mass) and 11:00 am on Thursday.

Ascension Sunday is a day that reminds us of our being com-missioned by the Lord: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations.” One of the themes of Pope Benedict’s recent trip to our country was the blessings we have as a nation of a broad

range of peoples. Think of ways this week that you can build up the kingdom of God. Perhaps learn more about other members of our Church and their history.

COMMUNAL PENANCE SERVICE

On May 10 at 3:30 pm, we will celebrate the Sacrament of Penance in a communal setting with the Liturgy of the Word and spend time in prayer and reflection. After a period of private prayerfulness, we will celebrate the Lord God’s love and forgiveness. We invite you to join us for this sacramental expression of Reconciliation. There will not be the individual celebration today. Just a reminder: we celebrate the Sacrament of Penance in its individual form each Saturday from 3:30 to 4:10 pm. You may also call the Min-istry Center to schedule a time that may be more convenient for you.

(continued from page 1) anyone is interested in seeing the revised job description, give me a call…we also will be looking to hire an office assistant who has competence in the typical Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint programs….I will be pleased to share that job de-scription as well.

Next weekend we will celebrate First Communion at the 4:30 pm Saturday Mass and again at the 9:00 am, 11:00 am and a special Mass at 1:00 pm…we hope you will share in the joy of this special welcome to the Table of the Lord with these children and their families. Have a good week…Peace!

PARISH COUNCIL AGENDA

Our Parish Council will meet on May 5 beginning at

7:00 pm in the Parish Meeting Hall. Topics to be covered are the Liturgy Committee Report, the Pastoral Leader-ship Report and a presentation of the proposed 2008 - 2009 Parish Budget.

The Council will also review the selec-tion process for new members to serve beginning with the June meeting. We will select from among the candidates later in May at a weekend Mass. Coun-cil meetings usually end by 9:00 pm. They are open to all Parishioners so if you would like to come and observe a meeting, please feel free to join us.

ORDINATION TO THE PRIESTHOOD

On May 24, the Order of Friars Minor (The Franciscans) will ordain five candidates to the Priesthood in the Church of St. Francis of Assisi in New York City.

One of those to be ordained is Scott Brookbank whose parents are parishioners of St. Joseph’s Penfield. Let us join in offering prayers of gratitude for the gift that Scott will be to our Church. Ordinations are special treasures not only for a home parish but for the larger Church. We congratulate Scott’s par-ents, Ron and Virginia. Let us all pray for the gift of ministry and that God would raise up from the midst of St. Louis parish candidates to serve in such a way in the years ahead.

However, do we take time to thank God for the many miracles He gives us eve-ryday – good health, family, friends, education, employment, housing? Being grateful is the secret to being joyful.

Saint’s Place

Saint's Place is a Christian values-based ministry that assists people, regardless of their race or creed, seeking a fresh start. Talents, re-sources, and time are shared with those who have suffered because of violence, injustice, war, discrimination, and poverty.

Each year Saint's Place assists hundreds of newly arrived refugees ar-riving through the Catholic Family Center's Refugee and Immigration Department.

Saint’s Place provides each refugee family with the furnishings they need to live in their new home (beds, dressers, tables, chairs, lamps, sofas, appliances, TVs, radio, linens, pots, pans, dishes, glasses, silver-ware, etc.), as well as clothing, initial cleaning supplies, toiletry items, books and school supplies. Saint’s Place is the only organization in the Rochester area that collects and redistributes furniture and household items directly to refugees in need.

For the past seven years, Saint’s Place has been providing a tutoring program once each week for refugee students as well as for adults. In 2005, a Child Care Center was opened to meet the unique needs of refu-gee children while their parents pursue adult education classes.

WE GROW IN FAITH: FAITH FORMATION & YOUTH MINISTRY

Pope watching… So how many of you took notice of our Pope being in our grand NYS last Sun-day and DC the days prior? I’m hoping all of you…but you never know – it was break last when he was here…so news probably wasn’t at the forefront of your daily tasks – it wasn’t for me. I did get a chance and listen last Sunday to some of the morning news shows and hear what they said of Pope Benedict’s visit. It was refreshing to hear the me-dia say how impressed they were with the Pontiff and he presented our church to America. They liked his compassion for the victims of clergy abuse; citing they were amazed at his words saying he was embarrassed and ashamed of the church. They actually joked that the congress of cardinals should pick our next President as they have done such a great job with the last two Popes. It’s funny about all this positive press. Several years ago, when Benedict was elected Pope, the story was he was a tough man who was known as the “enforcer” (of the church rules). Most ruled him out as being nothing near the persona John Paul had created. Bene-dict was considered a “filler” until the next Pope. No one expected him to have a personality and be able to relate to the world as John Paul did. It just goes to show you – you can’t judge a book by its cover. Give some-one an opportunity and you never know what you might uncover. See you at Youth Group tonight – plenty of opportunities!

Pray for Victims of Abuse

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. Please say this prayer.

God of endless love, ever caring, ever strong, Always present, always just: You gave your only Son To save us by the blood of his cross.

Gentle Jesus, Shepherd of peace, Join to our own suffering The pain of all who have been hurt In body, mind and spirit By those who betrayed the trust placed in them.

Hear our cries as we agonize Over the harm done to our brothers and sisters. Breathe wisdom into our prayers, Soothe restless hearts with hope Steady shaken spirits with faith: Show us the way to justice and wholeness, Enlightened by truth and enfolded in your mercy.

Holy Spirit, comforter of hearts, heal your people’s wounds And transform our brokenness. Grant us courage and wisdom, humility ad grace, So that we may act with justice and find peace in you. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

This feature continues articles from Stephen Prothero’s Book Religious Literacy. His thesis is that we all need to be-come more literate in matters of religion. Dalai Lama (b. 1935). The spiritual leader of the Gelugpa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism and the political leader of the Tibetan people, understood by his followers to be the reincarnation of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara and, as such, a person of extraordinary wisdom and compassion. Like the terms Christ and Buddha, Dalai Lama ("Ocean of Wisdom") is a title rather than a proper name. Today's Dalai Lama, born Lhamo Dhondrub in 1935, is the fourteenth in a lineage that began in the fifteenth century. While still an infant, he was recognized as a reincarnation of the thirteenth Dalai Lama and given the name Tenzin Gyatso. (Each Dalai Lama is said to be a reincarnation of his predecessor.) He fled to India in 1959 after the Chinese government occupied Tibet and now operates the Tibetan government in exile in Dharamsala, In-dia. The Dalai Lama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. In the United States he has become something of an icon, personifying both Buddhism itself and the ongoing struggle for a free Tibet. He has met with a series of US presi-dents, beginning with George H.W Bush in 1991, and was featured in the "Think Different" advertising campaign of Apple Computer.

What Americans Need to Know

Faces of St. Louis

The Browne Family by Andrea Calabrese

There’s no place like home, church or school for the Browne Family. The three places are so intertwined, it’s like they are one. Matt Browne grew up in Pittsford as part of the St. Louis Church family. He attended St. Louis School and then McQuaid Jesuit High School. Debbie, Matt’s wife of twelve years, grew up in Lewiston as a parishioner of Holy Trinity in Niagara Falls. Debbie’s extended family members belonged to Holy

Trinity since relocating from Poland. As a couple, Matt and Debbie attended the Chapel at St. John Fisher College where they were married and had their first daughter, Eliza, baptized. The Browne Family found their way back to our parish once Eliza, now nine years old and in third grade, started attending St. Louis School. They also have another daughter, six-year old Sophie, who is in kindergarten at the school.

“St. Louis Church is very special to us since our children also attend St. Louis School,” said Debbie. “The church and school are very much a part of our lives. The St. Louis community as a whole is a very generous and giving community which is something wonderful to be a part of and teach our children.”

Matt and Debbie encourage following the “Golden Rule” in their household. Their family motto is “Kindness is contagious” – that is, they try to teach their children that acts of kindness make the world a better place. They also emphasize dealing with life through laughter. It is the ideal way to make the most of every day.

As a family, the Brownes often help arrange refreshments after Sunday Mass. Eliza and Sophie enjoy the church’s Vacation Bible School program, to which Debbie also contributes. The program is highly informative, interactive and entertaining. “The children view it as Jesus’ version of a high school musical,” jokes Debbie. The Brownes also help at the school assisting with the Sunshine Luncheon, Heart and Home, and anywhere else they are needed. Additionally, Debbie volunteers at the Pittsford Food Cupboard.

Professionally, Matt owns and operates PAD Business Forms, which sells various kinds of printing. Debbie is a school psy-chologist for the Pittsford School District – primarily Barker Road Middle School. Work and school keep them all busy but the Brownes always make time for the activities they love, particularly anything outdoors. From skiing (Matt is a race coach for the girls) to swimming, camping, hiking and gardening – if it’s outdoors, the Brownes are sure to enjoy it. More impor-tantly, the Brownes enjoy carving out time every night before bed to read together as a family. They find it’s a great way to share and connect and it’s the perfect ending to each blessed day.

Vocation as a Call

Each baptized Christian is called by God to do something special!

Our call, or vocation, as Christians is to become more

Christ like. Each of us has special gifts and talents to help us be of service to others.

Service is the vocation common to all Christians. Each of us is called to live out the call to service through a particular lifestyle.

Through prayer, reflection, and conversation with others about our dreams and talents, we can use our gifts in a vocation that will help us share the

Gospel of service with others.

Fr. Kevin Murphy Msgr. Gerard Kreig

A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like: “We used to skate outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire; it hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspber-ries in the woods.” The little girl was wide-eyed, taking this all in. At last she said, “ I sure wish I’d gotten to know you sooner!”
