A new season is here and it’s time for a change in fashion tempo. Leading retailer DV8, which has stores across Northern Ireland and a shopping website at www.dv8fashion.com gives us a preview of the biggest trends for autumn, including ‘must-have mustards’, bold checks and cosy knits – all with a hint of seasonal glamour.

Mustard tones make an appearance on knits, leather-look pencil skirts and tights. It’s a classic autumnal colour and never goes out of fashion at this time of year. Big checks feature

on trousers and dresses and are a massive trend this season, saying ‘Check Me Out’ loud and clear.

DV8’s new collection also features glam jump suits in block colour and crop-top and trouser combinations in floral print. Match any of the outfits with a statement bag and heels, and you’ll be bang on trend.

For guys the autumn look includes heavy knits, biker jackets, chinos and dark jeans, teamed with either trainers or brogues.

Here’s Mud in your eye...

Orlagh MayeY ou’re bound to of heard

the latest buzz about the famous GLAMGLOW

mud’s? Talk of these mud masks have been swarming across my social media for weeks! I wanted to know where they worth all that hype.

First of all I was able to get my hands on YOUTHMUD (the black one) and really all I have to say is this mask is a must and HAS to be included in your weekly facial routine. It will have your face looking stunning within 15 minutes. It’s the ultimate 10-minute ‘facial in a jar.’ Used behind-the-scenes in Hollywood’s Entertainment, Music and Fashion industries for immediate camera-ready skin. The mask, which contains French sea clay, volcanic minerals and green tea, does exactly what it says to do...it tingles (in a good way) as it dries and exfoliates beautifully on removal.

GLAMGLOW SUPER MUD was next, The Winner of 2013 CEW Insiders Beauty Award. Clinically developed by a GLAMGLOW dermatological chemist, this mask helps to your problem skin. You apply it the normal way that you would the other masks; this powerful formula incorporates a unique six-acid blend to dramatically enhance your skin’s tone and texture, and leverages Activated X-Charcoal to draw out dirt from your nasty pores! It’s a real vacuuming for the pores and I’ve been using it once every two or three weeks.

Dehydrated flaky skin is one of the most common

problems here in NI with our shocking climate changes. So I set out to find the best hydration face mask.

When GLAMGLOW released the THIRSTYMUD their latest product at the minute, I knew it was going to be a good one. So obviously I purchased. The price similar to previous masks I had tired, but knowing their effects actually work I didn’t mind paying that bit extra. Using the mask during the day, it is applied in a thin and even layer across the face and neck and left for 10 -20 minutes. During that time,

treatments are in tiny pods that contain a bioactive mud mask that can be used under your eyes to help with puffiness, dark circles, and fine lights. The formula also happens to promise to brighten and hydrate. It contains nutrients as well as minerals that brighten your eye. To use you simply tap the product under your eyes to active it, wait for 2 to 3 minutes, and wipe off.

it felt cooling to the skin yet it had a slight tingling sensation that slowly abated. Autumn is nearly here and with winter just around the corner, I always battle my thirsty skin and try to force hydration to penetrate those stubborn

Barriers, yet I always find myself on the losing side. With Glam glow Thirsty mud in my cupboard I will finally win the war against dehydrated skin!

GLAMGLOW BRIGHT EYES, at last! A product that says it instantly works and actually does! I look so much more awake! GLAMGLOW BRIGHTEYES

Amy Childs left Essex behind to pay Belfast visit this October when she launched her beauty range in Jason Shankey’s hairdressing salons in both House of Fraser and Belfast’s Lisburn Road.

Amy’s range, which includes tanning products, moisturisers, eyelashes and vajazzles is being exclusively stocked in Northern Ireland by Jason Shankey Hairdressing. The link up followed a meeting between company director Brenda Shankey and Amy Childs during a recent visit to Essex,

The Only Way is Amy Childs

after they were introduced by mutual friend and presenter on ITV1’s This Morning, Eamonn Holmes, where Amy has a regular beauty segment.

‘I had been looking for unique beauty products for our hairdressing and beauty salons, and Eamonn suggested a meeting with Amy. Once I saw Amy's range of lashes, spray tan products and skin accessories, I realised I was looking at a great quality and unique range to bring back to Belfast,’ said Brenda Shankey.

Twenty-four-year-old Amy

became a regular household name after appearing in the first two series of the ITV2 series ‘The Only Way Is Essex’, where she made us all familair with the vajazzle! After leaving the show, Amy went on to take part in Celebrity Big Brother 8 in 2011 and this year she participated in the Channel 4 reality series The Jump.

‘My proudest moment so far has to be when we won the BAFTA for TOWIE in 2011. It was such a great night and we were all over the moon to walk away with the Audience

We know you’ll be ‘well jel’ when you hear Ulster Life caught up with Essex beauty Amy Childs when she was in Belfast recently...

Award,’ comments Amy.As well as her reality TV

appearances, magazine appearances and TV presenting, Amy also launched a fragrance back in 2012 called ‘Amy Childs’ and complementing her Brentwood salon, the next step was the development of her own beauty range, which includes fake tan, eyelashes, moisturisers, and of course, vajazzles - and can now be purchased right here in Belfast.

Amy herself is always perfectly groomed and if stranded on a desert island told us that the three things she would take with her would be fake tan, mascara and some Jo Malone fragrance because she always likes to smell nice.

Having crammed so much into such a short space of time and enjoyed so much success, we were interested to know if Amy had anything left that she wants to achieve? ‘I can’t think of anything at the moment, but to date, I have certainly achieved everything that I have set out to and I’ll continue to develop my existing clothing and beauty ranges. I love my presenting work and who knows what the future holds but I’m looking forward to finding out.’

Finally, you may think you know everything there is to know about Amy, but were you aware that she played table tennis competitively? In her own words, she is an ‘amazing table tennis player’ and was ranked no.2 when representing Essex at the sport!

So it seems that Amy is destined for success at whatever she turns her hand to!

Ranfurly House Arts and Visitor Centre is the perfect starting point for an exploration of the Dungannon and Tyrone area. It is located in the former Belfast Bank, a beautiful mid Victorian centrepiece at the heart of Dungannon town. It also sits beneath one of Ireland and Europe’s most important heritage sites - HILL of THE O’NEILL.

From here the famous O’Neill dynasty utilized a stunning 360-degree view of the province of Ulster to rule Gaelic Ireland for over 300 years. The centre contains a multi-media exhibition narrating the Hill’s importance in Irish and European history,

This Autumn explore historic and beautiful Dungannon & Tyrone

its links to the O’Neill’s and the subsequent Flight of the Earls and Plantation of Ulster. The Centre was officially opened in October 2012 and has become a very popular Visitor Attraction, arts centre and performance area in the town of Dungannon.

Visitors are welcome to come and spend time with us on the Historic Hill of THE O’NEILL, a site used by rulers, noblemen and armies as a stronghold to dominate the area, a place from which they could influence all of Ulster. At least two castles are thought to have been built on the site, as well as a grand manor house and a fortified

town. Discover how Dungannon was once at the centre of world affairs. Learn more about the history of the O’Neill’s, the Flight of the Earls and the Plantation of Ulster in our Permanent exhibition area located on the first floor of the centre.

Visitors can also enjoy guided tours on request, and learn about tales of intrigue and exile, fascinating journeys and battle

A leading stylist in Northern Ireland, Eve has a wealth of experience in the industry. Each month she offers a fashion focus into the most coveted designers, trends and styles of the season.

The Collections: ETROAs we embrace the official start of the winter season, with the autumn winter trends in full swing, I look back to the AW’14/15 collections and select my overall personal favourite and top choice of the shows across all Fashion Weeks. This season’s selection and hands down front-runner has to be Etro’s Ready-To-Wear Fall

collection, shown at Milan Fashion Week. Hailing from an Italian family known for its fine textiles, head designer Veronica Etro took the brand to new heights in what was, in my opinion, the designer’s most accomplished show to date.

Within this collection, Etro took us beyond the realms of their signature paisley print we

have become so accustomed to, triumphantly adapting the grandeur of folkloric patterns into a graceful and luxurious line. Renowned for its attention to detail in laborious handmade printing, the brand’s inspiration drew heavily on prints from a plethora of cultures, from Uzbekistan to Russia and beyond.

There was a distinct theme of bohemian layering throughout, however the execution ensured the built up looks were neither bulky nor busy. The base colour palette was of suitably autumnal, earthy tones in rich tans, forest greens and regal maroons. The confident layering of fabrics created a rich tapestry of textures, including blanket wools,

embroidery, furs and silks. Stand out pieces embodied

the feeling you had stumbled across an exquisite vintage find from a far-off land, such as a feather-light silk chiffon dress in a tapestry print, heavily woven with thick stripes of shimmering gold appliqué or a wool cape edged in lambskin with intricate, delicate thread embroideries.

Above all, Etro has been successful in combining several trend elements in a unique aesthetic, whilst creating a very wearable, high quality collection. The collection is just that – “ready to wear”. Pick out a blanket cape, structured jacket or tapestry bag, as a timeless addition to your winter wardrobe and join the bohemian journey with Etro.

Kaffe O is a Nordic coffee shop recently opened on the bustling Ormeau Road in Belfast. As soon you as you step inside this buzzing coffee house, the scandanavian stylings paired with the distinctive aroma of coffee, (the beans are transported from Denmark, obviously), transport you to a place seemingly far away, where you could spend hours chatting over that unmistakeable taste of superb coffee.

This month Ulster Life chatted to the equally charming owner Orla Smyth. A self-professed “coffee-snob”, Orlas story is unlike that of your normal entrepreneur. Firstly she was a corportate lawyer for 12 years before her passion for coffee led her to creating Kaffe-O; secondly Orla holds the current world transplant games records in the 400m, 800m and 1500m, pretty impressive for a girl whose odds were piled high against her.

Hello Orla, tell us a bit about your backgroundWell- where do I start? I’m 35 from the Ormeau Road. I am the youngest of three and mum

and dad and my brother and sister still live in the area. I was a corporate lawyer for nearly 12 years- when I decided to give it all up to open up a Scandinavian coffee shop- oh I’ve also had two kidney transplants, spent nearly four years on dialysis and hold the current world transplant games records in 400,800 and 1500m....oh yeh and I’m probably a little unhinged!! I’m married to Declan Morgan who I met in my first year of Uni ( who i persuaded to abandon the sticks for the big lights) and we have a very old chocolate Labrador called Denis ( I’m also an Arsenal fan!)

We know you used to play football for Northern Ireland as well as winning 7 gold medals in the World Transplant Games; setting 3 world records along the way. How hard was it for you to re-establish your sporting success after your transplant?

Really hard- it started very slowly. Before the transplant I played a lot of soccer and Gaelic football, but given the location of my transplanted kidney- I knew

that going back to football wasn’t an option for me. You see I lost my first kidney transplant after three months (nothing to do with sporting activities!!) and I just didn’t want to do anything that could put it in any possibility of harm’s way- so I took up running. Being honest I always hated the pre season fitness side of football training so am surprised how much I ended up falling in love with running. Though when I was on dialysis I wasn’t well enough to do any sport- so I was dying to get back in to exercise as soon as I was well enough- I started just walking, then running and well kept going- even managing a couple of marathons too.

You’ve overcame massive obstacles to get to where you are. Can you tell us a bit about how having a kidney transplant changed your perspective on life?

In unimaginable ways and in ways which I am actually extremely grateful for- no matter what has happened in the past.

It changes your perspective on everything- I mean I know I am healthy and alive only because someone died healthy and young and donated their organs- and I was lucky enough to get a kidney. I can never thank my donor or her family enough for that so I just think that I have to try and make the most of every opportunity and try and live my life to the full- in doing so I feel that this is the best way I can thank my donor and her family. Its hard

Get the family wrapped up warm and take advantage of the golden autumn days, kicking up crispy leaves in Killynether Wood at Scrabo Country Park, Newtownards or at one of the

National Trust properties – Mount Stewart, Rowallane or Castle Ward. For some spectacular bird watching, visit the Floodgates at Newtownards or Castle Espie Wetland Centre, Comber and welcome the annual return of the Brent Geese to the Lough. After this, warm up with a hot drink and tasty bite, in one of the many coffee shops or eateries, some with stunning views of

the tranquil countryside. This October, Donaghadee celebrates its strong Ulster Scots links with an Ulster Scots Autumn Festival from Thursday 16 – Saturday 18 October. This Festival will include The Willie Drennan Ulster Scots Band in concert, a cookery masterclass by Jenny Bristow, an Ulster Scots Family Day and Living History Experience, fireworks and much more.

At Hallowe’en, Downpatrick is the place to be and ‘Nightmare on Main Street’ is the theme, with events running from Thursday 30 October - Saturday 1 November. Also, at Hallowe’en, Mount Stewart, Newtownards will see the return of the beautiful ‘Festival of Light’, when the woodlands come alive with lights and music. Enjoy an illuminated walk around the lake and log-fires along the way. You could also book an eerie Experience Ards Hallowe’en Walking Tour of the town after dark, or a Murder Mystery and solve who carried out the dreadful deed.

Why not consider extending your visit and stay in the area during half term? Book into a bed and breakfast or guesthouse, self-catering unit or totally relax in one of the hotels.

Ingredients (serves 4)• 300g diced lamb• 1 jar (about 90-100g)

Lamb TagineThis stew is great to share with friends after a bracing autumn walk.

(green or black)• 1 tin chickpeas• A handful of prunes,

flat leaf parsley

Method• Preheat the oven to

• Quarter the peeled lemon.• Heat the oil in a casserole

dish or tagine on the hob.• Brown the marinated

lamb and then add the onion, celery, carrot, cinnamon, garlic, turmeric, olives, chickpeas, dried fruit and lemon rind. Place the quartered lemon into the pot.

• Add the stock, put the lid on the pot and transfer to the oven.

• Cook for about 2 hours until the lamb is very tender.

• Just before serving, top with parsley.

• Delicious on its own or served with quinoa, brown rice or a crisp green salad.

Have you been to the new River Medical clinic on the Lisburn Road in Belfast yet? It’s well advised to pop in, avail of a free consultation with one of their Nurses and find out what you can be doing to dramatically improve your skin.

In terms of skin treatments,

River Medical offers the widest suite of treatments to treat common skin concerns, from lines and wrinkles, dull and tired skin, to problem skin including acne and rosacea.

The anti-ageing industry, for one, has changed dramatically in the past decade and is

continuously advancing and becoming more and more sophisticated. One area that has advanced greatly in terms of both sophistication and also the beautiful results is the area of anti-wrinkle injectables.

“In my experience between London, Dublin and now

Belfast, with our new clinic on the Lisburn Road, I find that our patients aren’t looking at individual lines the way they used to. Instead they are open to looking at the entire face, looking not only at that frown line or forehead wrinkle but instead at the quality of the skin altogether and/or the loss of volume in the face, which is

part and parcel of the ageing process”, said Registered General Nurse and Belfast Clinic manager, Aoibhin Cronin.

River Medical believes in offering free consultations, so you can get the expert knowledge, equip yourself with all of the relevant information in a safe, trusted, and highly experienced

medical environment.“Our Wednesday anti-wrinkle

injections clinic with Belfast man, Dr Kieran Mulligan is proving incredibly popular. Patients can also take the opportunity of having a fillers consultation with one of our Nurses, as anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers complement each other extremely effectively. Generally anti-wrinkle injections are used on the upper part of the face and Dermal Fillers in the lower part of the face”, added Aoibhin.

Wrinkle-relaxing injections soften the expression lines on the face by reducing the muscle movement; and dermal fillers physically “fill” and plump out the line or area of concern.

The filler product actually acts as a scaffold under the skin, providing structure and stimulating your own natural collagen to grow.

At River Medical, if you attend for treatment, you will be invited back two weeks later for a reassessment and if required or desired, additional product will be administered at no additional charge.

To find out more or to book a free consultation, call River Medical on 028 9560 7585 or visit www.rivermedical.co.uk. River Medical is located at 88 Lisburn Road in Belfast.

A Fresh StartBy Eve BrannonSponsored by BODY VIBESIt’s that time of year, when summer is officially dead and buried and the chances are (like myself) you have been home from holidays a while now, yet you’re still feeling a tad sluggish and bloated. Summer treats, a few (too many) tipples, the holiday desserts and general excess can leave your liver overworked and out of sorts. On top of that your skin is a little dull and you can’t shake

the feeling of overall ‘puffiness’. So why not start afresh and give your body a well deserved break?

Cleansing or detoxing doesn’t have to mean starvation, deprivation, or a complete lifestyle change. Making a few conscious alterations each day can cleanse your body of all those impurities that have been creeping into your system. Here I look at a

few tips to get you back on the route to health and happiness!

COMMIT TO CLEANSEIf your digestive system is feeling sluggish or your energy levels are low, it could be time to flush out your liver and give your whole system a rest. A break from food additives and other hard-to-digest elements should get you back on

Page 61: The October Issue 2014

ULfitnesstrack. Opt for whole foods, with one ingredient. Fill your plate with nutrient-dense foods full of colour. They are high in antioxidants, due to the molecule sulforaphane, which helps to renew cells and fight cancer. Antioxidants also help flush toxins and restore your autoimmune system to its healthiest best.

white meats, fish, eggs, beans and pulses in your diet and ideally aim for 0.5 - 1.5 grams of protein daily per pound of body weight.

IT’S OBVIOUS - DRINK WATERIf you’re not drinking enough water, you’re not giving yourself a remote chance of cleansing out toxins. Aim for at least two litres or eight glasses a day, which will flush your system, clear a foggy head, boost your digestion and even improve brain functionality. The body is made up of 70% water and needs this volume just to stay hydrated. I like to start the day with hot water and lemon, to kick start the organs.

REDUCE SODIUMEveryone knows that too much salt can lead to high blood pressure, so limit your intake with table salt and be aware of the hidden salt content in processed foods. Salt also impairs your body’s ability to flush out fluids, leaving you bloated with water retention.

PLAN TO EAT OFTEN By planning ahead of time you should aim to eat at least three small healthy meals and two snacks a day, eating every few hours. This will help to reduce cravings, ensuring you don’t reach for carb-heavy, sugary snacks.

GO HERBALIf you develop a headache when you miss your regular coffee, your body is addicted to the stimulant caffeine. Try cutting caffeine from your diet to restore your energy balance. Lemon and ginger tea is perfect for detoxing and assisting in digestive issues. While green tea will help you burn calories and is loaded with polyphenols like flavonoids and catechins, which function as powerful antioxidants.

AND FINALLY – GET MOVING!It may be the last thing you feel like, but who has ever finished a workout regretting it? Exercise will wake up your system and boost your mood and energy levels, as well as aiding in shifting those extra holiday pounds. Not sure where to start? Why not try the FREE TRIAL offered by BODY VIBES gym? This is where I started and I haven’t looked back. Call 028 9066 0137 or visit bodyvibes.co.uk

PORTION CONTROLOver the summer it’s easy to get accustomed to holiday portions and overeating at ‘picky’ barbecues. If you’re a sucker for seconds, it’s time to take control of your food intake. Try using a small plate and only eat until you feel 70% full. Your stomach needs to shrink down slightly after being stretched and chances are, it’s clearing your plate that leaves you satisfied.

THE POWER OF PROTEINIt is vital to make sure that you eat enough protein during this time. If your diet is lacking in sufficient protein, your body starts to draw on the protein in your liver. Plus protein fills you up for longer and will prevent snacking. Include

After a hugely successful campaign to find the Face of Blush for the past seven years, Blush bridal boutique has once again launched the competition to find a new face for its 2015 advertising campaign.

The luxury bridal boutique, situated on the stylish Lisburn Road in Belfast, will commence its search for the 2015 ‘Face of Blush’ this month and will offer a host of prizes for the most blushing bride. Organisers are seeking a bride who represents the true character of the deluxe boutique and who will become the face of their 2015 advertising campaign.

Boutique owner Aileen Wilson explains why Blush is looking for a normal bride; “A Blush bride can be any woman, of any age, so we are delighted to receive entries from both older and younger entrants this year. You don’t have to be model material to get through to the final stages, we look for glowing brides who just beam with happiness and have the right spirit for our campaign, which is what the Blush ethos is all about.”

Zoe Hanna from Kilkeel, in County Down, fought off fierce competition from across Ireland and beyond to be crowned the Face

of Blush 2014, and has enjoyed her year so far as the Face of Blush, starring in a fabulous photo shoot just weeks before her wedding. She will now be appearing in numerous magazines and newspapers as Blush’s advertising campaign is published in the coming months.

Lucky Zoe also got to choose the wedding dress of her dreams, along with all her accessories to complete her bridal look. Her mum also got to choose her perfect Mother of the Bride outfit from the stunning Blush collections. On her wedding day Zoe had her hair professionally styled by Lynette Murray from Blue Hairdressing and make-up by award-winning make-up artist Caoimhe Curran.

Primary School Teacher Zoe said about her experience: “Winning Face of Blush 2014 was amazing and I am so grateful and appreciative to Blush Boutique for the opportunity. The prize package was incredible and truly made the run up to our wedding even more special. The professionalism, not only at Blush Boutique, but also with the photographer, the make-up artist and hairdresser was outstanding. The photoshoot with Khara Pringle was a fantastic day with lots of giggles, fun and some hilarious posing positions. I was nervous to begin with, but soon got into the way of it, and loved every minute. I just wish I could rewind the clock and do it all again. And again and again!"

I visited the restaurant on a Thursday evening and from the moment you step inside the restaurant door the experience begins. The restaurant itself with its dim lighting and perfectly set tables paired with the impeccable customer service, show a standard of class and sophistication that

This month Ulster Life’s Zoe Brennan visited Northern Ireland’s finest, OX Belfast

confirms OX’s status as one of the best in the business.

We dined from the OX Autumn Tasting menu, each course coming with a specially chosen wine accompaniment. Owner Alain’s expertise in this field was evident as each wine was chosen perfectly, consisting of just the right amount of flavour to complement each course beautifully.

The first course consisted of yolk, Iberico ham, chanterelle and autumn truffle. The result was super and certainly set the high standard that we were quickly becoming accustomed to here. This was followed by hay baked celeriac, black garlic and sorrel, again this was absolutely faultless.

The texture was perfect and the taste wonderful. For the third course we feasted on halibut, romanesco and curry. The fish was cooked to perfection and melted in the mouth and the romanesco and curry had just the right amount of flavour to accompany it perfectly. Our next course consisted of rabbit, paimpol beans, foie gras and cavolo nero. The rabbit was undeniably flawless and the texture was again perfect. Each ingredient appears to work together so seamlessly, creating a meal that allows each separate flavour to be enjoyed.

This course was followed by an very flavoursome selection of cheeses.

The fifth course consisted of two desserts, nectarine parfait, honey and thyme and valrhona chocolate, praline and blackcurrant leaf. I normally wouldn’t choose chocolate for a sweet but I have to admit the valrhona chocolate was irresistible. The nectarine parfait was exactly as the name suggests - parfait!

The presentation of every course was beautiful with chefs having an excellent eye for detail. wAll of the food is sourced locally and put in the expert hands of head chef Stephen gives the air of produce that is 100% world class. The thing to note about head chef and owner Stephen is he appears to have the rare quality of knowing exactly how to make ingredients work well together. His dishes are created by a variety of delicate ingredients, with the separate textures and flavours of each having an important role in creating the overall taste
