Welcome to the Oakville Symphony 2014/15 season - “A Season of Favourites”One of my great pleasures as Music Director is the opportunity to connect with our

audience at concerts and Symphony functions. During these conversations, many of youhave suggested some of the great orchestral works that have particular meaning orsignificance for you. When planning this season, I realized that many of these works havenot been performed by the Symphony for a number of years. With this in mind, we havedesigned a season that is dedicated to some of your favourite music.

Outstanding works such as the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto no. 2, Smetana’s TheMoldau, Beethoven’s First Symphony, Ravel’s Pavane and the New World Symphony ofDvorak are just some of your favourite masterpieces that we are performing throughoutthe season. Outstanding guest artists, combined with the dedicated performances of ourown talented musicians, will ensure that our concerts will be a thrilling and memorableexperience.

Our 47th season will also feature a full orchestra Young People’s concert in February,mini-concerts in the OCPA lobby, as well as our Family Christmas concerts, featuring thevoices of the award-winning Oakville Children’s Choir. The Oakville Symphony is indeedproud to produce concerts for every age group in our community, while devotingparticular attention to introducing children and their families to live orchestral music.

On behalf of our wonderful musicians, I would like to express sincerest thanks to ourdedicated Board of Directors, the great organizational and management team of Peggyand Murray Steele, and the outstanding leadership of our Board President, GillianSantangeli. Along with our corporate sponsors and the ongoing commitment of ourgenerous donors and audience, the Oakville Symphony has become a model of truecommunity engagement and support. Thanks to the enthusiasm of our subscribers, thisseason will mark our ninth consecutive “sold-out on subscription” season.

As our Thank You for your continued support, we invite you to enjoy theSymphony@47 – A Season of Favourites.

Sincerely, ROBERTO DE CLARA, Conductor and Music Director

Welcome to the Oakville Symphony’s 47th season! On behalf of the Board of Directors of the OakvilleSymphony, I would like to thank all of our corporatepartners, subscribers and ‘Friends’ who make thisseason possible. Your support of our musicians andyour enthusiasm for the classical music they bringto life makes us the envy of many other orchestras. At our opening concert, we present the Young

Artist awards and thank the donors who make theprogram possible. An initiative of the late JanetJones, the Young Artist program offers talented

high school age musicians the opportunity to rehearse under thementorship of a professional musician and perform challenging repertoire. We are most grateful to the Jones Family for the creation of the Janet JonesEndowment Fund in recognition of Janet’s leadership of this program. While sponsoring a Young Artist is beyond the reach of many, a gift to theJanet Jones Endowment Fund is an excellent way to support the program. The Oakville Symphony also has a general endowment fund, with

proceeds available to the Symphony for funding of day-to-day operations.Gifts in honour of a special birthday, in memoriam, or even a gift in kindthrough a donation of securities are other ways to contribute to the long-term financial health of the Symphony. Contact any Board member formore information. It is a great honour to represent the Board at our concerts and to

represent the Symphony in the community. While this is my final year aschair, I plan to stay involved through the Outreach Committee. TheOutreach Committee offers the free Mini-concerts, brings musicians intothe schools and coordinates the Poster Contest. Would you like to join me?Speak to me at any concert about volunteer opportunities.Enjoy the Season!

MODEST MUSSORGSKY (1839 - 1891)Night on Bald Mountain

In 1867, Mussorgsky indicated he had completed this work on the night ofJune 23, a date that is traditionally regarded as the Witches’ MidsummerSabbath. Indeed, he stated that the music portrays the Sabbath Assemblyof Witches and Satan’s Pageant. As is traditional for such pagan themes, the music begins in relative calm, and then gradually descends into chaos. An alternative interpretation of the piece, given its title, is of a travellerbenighted in a cruel mountain storm, and confronted by real or imaginedperil. Eventually the storm passes and the clarinet and flute solos in theclosing bars become a prayer of thanks for having survived the night.

MAURICE RAVEL (1875-1937)Pavane pour une infante defunte

Pavane was written originally for the piano in 1899, and orchestrated asa ballet score in 1910. The piece was inspired by a rendition of theprincess infanta by the painter Velazquez, and the music evokes asolemn ceremonial dance in the Spanish court at a time of mourning. Itis characterised by somewhat variable phrase lengths, and long flowinglines. The apparent simplicity of the music belies its technical difficultyfor some of the performers, for instance in the opening horn solo.

BEDRICH SMETANA (1824-1884)Vltava (The Moldau), from Ma Vlast (My Country)

The Ma Vlast cycle of symphonic tone poems depicts a variety of Czechlegends, history and scenery. It was written during 1872-79, and wasmuch inspired by similar efforts of Tchaikowsky and Saint-Saens todevelop nationalistic material. Smetana was ill at the time, and by 1874he was also completely deaf. A string quartet written shortly afterwardsincludes a persistent high E flat, possibly the constant whistling in theears that Smetana had experienced. By 1882, his sanity had collapsedand he was confined to an asylum.

The Moldau is the best known segment. It portrays a river that has twosources, which are represented by separate, then interleaved figures inthe flutes (a cold stream) and clarinets (a warm one). The river widens, with a broad melody in the strings, and then in turn there are huntinghorns (in the brass), dancing at a rustic wedding, and rustling elves andwater nymphs in the light of the rising moon. Eventually we arrive at theSt. John Rapids, where the water gradually accelerates, forming wavesthat dash and foam. Finally the river broadens once again as itapproaches Prague.

SERGEI RACHMANINOV (1873-1943)Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18I. Moderato II. Adagio sostenuto III. Allegro scherzando

This work reflects a triumph over adversity. After the disastrousreception of his first symphony in 1897 (the conductor, Glazunov, hadarrived drunk, and did not take the work seriously), Rachmaninovendured a three year period of intense depression. He consulted ahypnotist, Dr. Nikolai Dahl, who used subliminal techniques to buildRachmaninov’s confidence in his ability to write a new piano concerto.Composition began in 1900, and the work was premiered in Moscow inthe following year, with Rachmaninov himself as soloist. The workdescribes Rachmaninov’s progression from sombre introspection at theopening, to the triumphant Finale, celebrating his release. The work isdedicated to Dr. Dahl – and in fact the violas are used more frequentlythan usual, acknowledging Dahl's own musicianship as a violist. It isnow one of the most popular piano concertos by any composer. The concerto’s morbid opening has eight poignant chords that

gradually build in tension and lead to a soaring second theme. The“romantic” second movement begins on muted strings, and continueswith a wistful melody on the flute and clarinet, which become acounterpoint to a theme in the piano. These roles are later reversed.Again the emotional level builds to a climax, and a beautiful coda. Thevigorous finale has echoes of Tchaikowsky.
