Wisconsin Veterans Home at King
Can it really be June already? We have had some days hot enough to make us think it is mid-summer, but did you know summer doesn’t officially start until June 21? In the United States and the rest of the northern hemisphere, the first day of the summer season is the day of the year when the sun is farthest north (on June 20th or 21st). This day is known as the Summer Solstice.
The month of June is the official start of summer; however this month is also widely known as June Dairy Month. June Dairy Month began in 1937 as a time to give thanks to the industry which makes dairy foods possible for us to enjoy. June Dairy Month was initially created as a way to distribute extra milk when cows started pasturing in the summer months. The traditions are rich in family and celebration and events have developed over the years to include consumers of dairy products as a way to educate and share in the bounty.
Some of the most enjoyable June Dairy Month events include Breakfast on the Farm. I encourage everyone to attend one of these events if you can. You will get to meet the farmers who produce dairy products, explore the farm and see the operations, and the best part – eat a wonderful array of delicious dairy products. There is fun and learning for everyone at these events and it is a great way to show support to the farmers and their involvement in one of America’s most important industries.
Did you know that dairy foods are loaded with nutrients and are one of the most economical ways to get those nutrients in your diet? A glass of milk costs about 25 cents and provides one of the richest sources of calcium for people. A few other fun facts about dairy: • It takes about two days to get from the farm to the grocery store. • There are dairy farms in all fifty states. • About 98% of dairy farms are family owned. • It takes 12 pounds of whole milk to make one gallon of ice cream. • Vanilla is America’s favorite ice cream flavor. • U.S. dairy farms produce roughly 21 billion gallons of milk annually. • Farmers measure milk in pounds, not gallons • In 1885, colby cheese was invented in Colby, Wisconsin.
Have a great June!
Warm regards,Shannon L. HardelInterim Commandant

The BarnIt is made of wood.
By my grandpa’s it stood.Sometimes we would play.
In the loft of hay.
The cows would come inAnd stand in their binThey would give us milkIt went down like silk.
But at last it was sold. That made me feel cold.
For there were memories there. And I did care.
But it seems that all the old barns are though. And it was makes me blue.
For they did what they were built to do.If you were a farmer you know too.

On the Road to Emmaus
WISCONSIN VETERANS HOME AT KINGChaplain’s Column
11
“Now that very day two of them was going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred. And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.”
In life, we are like the disciples on the road to Emmaus. There are sad roads we too must walk. Sometimes it seems like nearly the whole world is confused and sad. “If you don’t know the direction in which you are going, the deep silence of you heart will let you know.” Debasish Mridha. The disciples were in dilemma on the story of the resurrection. Maybe, one could say because of women who witnessed the resurrection so they did not want to believe them. One would wonder what was going on in their minds. As they traveled to Jerusalem. Romans 8: 28 “All things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Imagine, you are one of the disciples walking to Jerusalem, discussing everyday issues, and a stranger joins you. How would one react to a stranger? As Jesus drew near, He accompanied his downcast disciples as they walked in the wrong direction. into the night. He started by asking questions about their present mood and by listening to them, but He did not stop there. Instead, He challenged them. Let me be the one who can bring the Lord to the suffering, the discouraged.
Sometimes I do not want to be disturbed and I let the stranger leave. Those who love God can trust His goodness, His power, and His will to work out all things for our good. We journey together with Him through our fellow human beings. One of the Rabbis said, “God’s language is a human person. Let us be like the disciples on the journey to Emmaus.” Matthew Hagee states that, “God will never let you walk alone in your darkest hour; He will journey with you until you see the light of provision.” Coleen Innis reminds us that, “My path is my path and no matter how rocky the road is, I refuse to go off course.”
In this world we live in today, we are on our journey to Emmaus; let us bring joy to all we meet in words or action. As we remember Easter, may the risen Lord give us joy and peace in our hearts no matter what we go through; God will never leave us alone.

This is my Quilt of Valor.
This is my quilt of Valor. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My Quilt is my gift. It represents my service life. I will appreciate it, as it was made in appreciation of me. My Quilt, without being made with love and support, would be meaningless. Without love and support, my service is meaningless. I must keep my Quilt always. I must respect those who show respect to me. I must remember my time of service along with those who remembered me. I will… My Quilt and I know that what counts in serving our country is not the places we’ve gone, the things we’ve done, or the battles we’ve fought.
We know standing for those in need makes it count. For them, we will stand… My Quilt of Valor is proud, as am I, because it reflects kindness found in American life. Thus, I will love it as a brother. I will love its wearing, its tearing, its patterns, its threads, its comfort, its true meaning, and its creators.
I will keep my Quilt dear and close, even as I am held dear and close. We will become part of each other. We will… Before God, I thank my supporters. My Quilt and the military are symbols of the services dedicated to our country. We are the pride of the people who made us. We will hold the memories of our military service life.
So be it, until we lay to rest and there is no enemy, but peace!
~ Carrie Hagen SGT-TN Army National Guard
Thank you to the members of RSVP/Silver Threads for making the quilts and to the DAV Chapter 30 for providing funding for the quilts.

Home Song by Thomas Kinkade & Katherine Spencer Follow Mayor Emily Warwick as she searches for happiness in the charming village of Cape Light. The village is on the New England coast, and most residents live there in peaceful bliss. Emily’s struggles began when she lost her husband and gave up her baby for adoption, some twenty years ago. The hole in her heart is not easily filled. She is also dealing with the incessant demands of her aging mother, and the impending marriage of her sister to a man the mother cannot stand.
I Am a Soldier, Too (The Jessica Lynch Story) by Rick Bragg In 2003, Private First Class Jessica Lynch was taken prisoner in Iraq. The convoy she was traveling in was ambushed and all 4 soldiers traveling with her died in the attack. Jessica was held captive in an Iraqi hospital for nine days, and was then rescued. This is Jessica’s story as she related it to Pulitzer Prize-winning author Rick Bragg. “Her rescue galvanized the nation; she became a symbol of victory, of innocence and courage, of heroism; and then, just as quickly, of deceit and manipulation.” Learn the truth as you read about this remarkable woman.
As Time Goes by by Michael Walsh This story begins where the beloved film “Casablanca” ends. Continue following the lives of Rick, Ilsa, Victor, Louis, Sam, Sacha, and Carl – the men and women of the film. Do Victor and Ilsa make it to America? Do Rick and Louis join the Free French garrison in Brazzaville? From beautiful Casablanca to wartime London, and from the smoke-filled speakeasies of Prohibition New York to the tension-filled streets of occupied Prague, you will enjoy following the lives of the people you thought you would never meet again!
True Blue by David Baldacci After spending 2 years in prison, Mason “Mace” Perry is free and determined to be a cop again! Mace had been a member of the D.C. police force until she was kidnapped and framed for a crime. She hopes to solve a major crime on her own, and prove she has every right to again wear the uniform. Her problem is one vindictive U.S. attorney who is anxious to see Mace back behind bars. Enter attorney Roy Kingman. Mace meets Roy after he discovers the dead body of a female partner at his firm. The pair’s investigation leads them to surprising secrets from both the private and public world of the nation’s capital.
Second Violin by John Lawton It is 1938, Europe is on the brink of war, and Frederick Troy has just been promoted to the prestigious Murder Squad at Scotland Yard. As the country prepares for war, Troy is put in charge of rounding up enemy aliens – Germans, Italians, Jews, even the odd Nazi. Hundreds of men are taken by train to a neglected camp on the Isle of Man. As the bombs begin to fall on London, rabbis are found murdered, one after the other. This novel brings to life war-torn London – a city racked by paranoia, ravaged by violence, and yet still very much alive.
Do Try to Speak as We Do (The Diary of an American Au Pair) by Marjorie Leet Ford Melissa leaves San Francisco after losing her job and indefinitely postponing her wedding. She heads to The United Kingdom to become au pair to a member of parliament’s family. She discovers the gap in understanding between the two countries is far greater than she expected. Another surprise to Melissa is how little a member of parliament is paid! She, the mother (“Mummy”), and the children have to share the same bathwater – one at a time. And Melissa has to go last. A comical read!
Dakota by Martha Grimes Andi Oliver’s only memory is of an occurrence in a Santa Fe bed-and-breakfast. Beyond that, she suffers amnesia and is a drifter. She is forced to invent details of her past as she moves from one small-town job to another, and moves from one state to another. Finally, in North Dakota, Andi gets hired at a massive pig farming facility. This farm specializes in the dark art of modern livestock management. She begins to uncover the truth about operations at the farm as well as its sister facility. Then a stranger from her past appears at her door and demands information of which she has no memory.
