Dear Friends:

No Jewish holiday falls in November this year. For the most part, November overlaps the Hebrew month of Cheshvan, also known in our tradition as Mar Cheshvan, or “the bitter month

of Cheshvan.” The month is called “bitter” precisely because, unlike the surrounding months, it is lacking in holidays.

What were our ancient rabbis thinking? A month without holidays, far from being bitter, offers the opportunity to focus on the blessings of daily and weekly Jewish life. Every day, however ordinary, we are to awaken and thank G-d for the inestimable gift of living. Each week, we welcome Shabbat as an opportunity to rest from our labors, to study and worship and celebrate the joy of community.

This Cheshvan, this November before Thanksgiving, I ask each of us to seize the holiday-less moment, to find holiness in moments that occur regularly. Here are some ideas; feel free to create and choose your own:

1. When you wake up in the morning, say the Shema.

2. Find three reasons to count your blessings each day, and thank G-d in the form of Jewish prayer: “Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha-olam, for . . . .”

3. Come to Temple on November 7, not only to worship with our congregation, but also to hear J.J. Goldberg, one of the most influential and thoughtful pundits in our contemporary Jewish world.

4. Study Torah with us on any Saturday at 9:30 am, and find ways to apply the timeless words of our tradition to our own modern lives.

5. Attend a Shabbat morning service at 11:00 am any Saturday, and discover the magical spirituality of our loyal, intimate worship community in the Chapel.

6. Participate in a Temple social action endeavor, helping with the Thanksgiving baskets and/or joining the crew that cooks at “Our House,” month after ordinary month. The need, and the hungry, are always with us.

Our society tends to value annual events most highly. Consider the way our culture treats Christmas or the Super Bowl or any of scores of examples we could name. Judaism, by contrast, values that which recurs regularly. The holiest day of the Jewish year is Shabbat, which takes place every week. When we repeat something frequently, whatever it is, it becomes valuable to us.

Seen that way, Cheshvan isn’t bitter at all. Instead, this month includes the holiest day of the year, four times over.

It is hard to believe that my time with you is over three quarters done. It has been a dynamic 18 months, at least from my perspective, with growth and change in many aspects of synagogue life which we will have a chance to recount at a later date.

Certainly one thing that stands out in my mind has been the incredible generosity of our membership, which has stepped up with their time, their energy, and their resources when called upon and sometimes without even being asked.

Your support for our annual Key Club drive during the High Holidays has been of tremendous importance in trying to keep our budget balanced as we continue to grow and again try to provide services and programming for all age groups.

When Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast, our congregants were immediately there enabling us to send supplies to affected areas and establish the Katrina Fund which continues to support relief and rebuilding efforts in New Orleans and for our Little Rock evacuees.

Of course there is not enough space here to thank all of you or your support for the Capital Campaign which is well on its way toward meeting its goals. We still have a little further to go, but we should be seeing the project spring to life with a groundbreaking ceremony and service for the Tenenbaum Center in the next few months.

As I have attended bienial conventions and seminars and have had the opportunity to exchange information and ideas with other congregational presidents, I realize how blessed we are to have an Endowment Fund, again established by the foresight and generosity of our congregants 15 years ago. It is our Endowment Fund which provides for our computer needs in the office, funds a number of special projects and balances the budget at the end of each year. Many congregations do not have one.

Still what this shortfall tells us is that dues alone are not enough to continue to allow us to grow and be the vibrant congregation that our membership wants, needs and quite frankly expects. So there may come a time when dues plus Endowment Fund are not enough and short term fund raising projects can only do so much.

Which brings me to the heart of my message having to do with remembering the temple in your estate planning. A number of individuals and families, now of blessed memory, have chosen to do this, and it has been a valuable though underutilized asset. Most of you are aware of the bequest of GE Stock by former member Lasker Ehrman which has grown in the last 10 years to become the Ehrman Fund. This fund has enabled us to have a full time administrator and educator and also takes care of other projects like biennial travel and visiting artists and collars.

There have been other generous gifts made over the years, too numerous to mention here, and while all cannot be of the magnitude of Mr. Ehrman's, believe me, every one is a valuable asset. Most such gifts are simple bequests from our members and supporters and can take the form of cash, securities, real estate and other property. I am sure there are other instruments such as charitable trusts and gift annuities which are possible and which have tax implications and benefits for you and your family. Certainly you do not need to be getting specific advice on matters such as this from a cardiologist, so I urge you to contact your attorney, accountant or financial advisor. I also hope to establish a Planned Giving committee before my term ends to distribute information and be a source for answers to your questions. They say that the main reason people do not give to a particular cause is that they were never asked. While I am not sure a request for this purpose has been made before (mainly because we do not like to think about these kinds of details), we are asking now. Given this congregation's past performance of stepping up when needed, I feel confident our membership will do what needs to be done. Addendum: This article was first published in February 2006. It should be noted that my time with you is only one eighth done. There have also been generous bequests recently from the estates of Blanche Alman and Velma Block. Furthermore, the funding for our Director of Lifelong Learning is currently provided by the Ottenheimer Foundation while funding for visiting speakers and musicians comes courtesy of Sisterhood and the Bauman Fund. Still the need for a vibrant planned giving program is vital just as it was 8 years ago. Fortunately Nan Selz has agreed to take the lead on this project so be expecting to hear from her or one of her committee members in the not too distant future. Please give our appeal some serious thought and discussion with your family members and advisors and be ready to step up when called just as our congregants have always done. Remember your Temple needs you. David Bauman

LaFTY NEWSThank you to Rabbi Block for his help leading the High Holiday Children's Services this year. We are so pleased the new format was a success!

After weeks of hard work, we took a break and went to the Little Rock Climbing Center for one of our LaFTY meetings in October. At the following meeting we helped the Temple Social Action committee prepare the Thanksgiving Baskets as part of our social action project.

CONGREGATION B’NAI ISRAEL

My how this year is slipping away! We have Thanksgiving around the corner. This is one of my favorite times of the year. The weather has cooled but the warmth of our Sisterhood and congregation keeps us going.

I would like to express my appreciation to Muriel Lederman for her outstanding leadership on the Sisterhood Programs Committee and providing our congregation with a beautiful Sisterhood Shabbat. Many thanks to all who helped to make this service a success.

Planned programs are:

• Just Communities of Arkansas walk, November 2 • Sisterhood meeting, February 1st, 2015 with a light lunch @ 12:00 • Miriam’s Seder, March 26, 2015 (Sharon Hendrix, Chair) • Flower arranging workshop with Richard Estelita on a Sunday in the spring • Weekend Theater’s “Karski’s Message” written by Phil McMath, April 9, 2015 (a special showing for Sisterhood with Passover treats) • Heschel Shabbat, June 5

The Sisterhood Judaica Shop is stocking its shelves for Hanukkah, which begins this year on Tuesday evening, December 16th. We carry a variety of menorahs and candles, gelt (both milk and dark chocolate), dreydels, decorations, gift wrap, Hanukkah toys and games, home accessories, and jewelry. Start shopping now for the basics and for gifts. New merchandise will arrive every week until Hanukkah, so keep checking back for what’s new for 2014! If you'll need a quantity of gelt or wooden dreydels, call Bonnie Jacobson 247-4050.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL:No School Thanksgiving Break -

Sunday, November 23rd & 30th

Thomas Gerson's Mitzvah Project in honor of his Bar MitzvahI decided to promote and support people with Alzheimer 's Disease for my Bar Mitzvah project through a project that I learned about last year in Religious School. My Torah portion is about the Tower of Babel. Just as God spread humanity around the globe making communication and understanding more difficult because the people spoke so many different languages, Alzheimer disease makes communication difficult. It causes people to forget close relationships and lifetime memories. Eventually they may lose their abilities to speak to others.

I am heading up an Awareness Day at my middle school to make people aware of Alzheimer's Disease. I have begun talking with nursing home administrators promoting the Music & Memory program. This organization brings music from their pasts to Alzheimer patients on iPods. Research shows that hearing music from earlier days can trigger recall and can be therapeutic to the patients. They become responsive to their environments, when they have been unresponsive to many other types of stimuli. I have given others an opportunity to learn about Music and Memory on my website and will be making a donation to Music & Memory myself.

Lifelong LearningOur Lifelong Learning program’s success is dependent upon making the information accessible to members of various ages in various stages of life. We need to be aware that our congregants’ interests differ regarding Jewish topics, their Jewish backgrounds, and levels of Jewish knowledge and understanding. But we also know that our program’s successes are dependent upon the talents and motivation of these very same congregants. We have been most fortunate to have skilled and generous teachers in our congregation who develop and instruct in the classes. Ideas for class offerings are generated at our winter and spring Lifelong Learning committee meetings, chaired by Dorian Stuber, a gifted teacher himself. Dorian helped us partner with Hendrix College to develop the well -received Nathan Englander series. “The New American Haggadah” panel discussion was spearheaded by Muriel Lederman who invited the participants and coordinated their efforts to examine this interesting text translated from the Hebrew by Englander. In addition to Muriel, Rabbi Block, Leah Elenzweig, Doris Krain, Phil Kaplan, Emily Lewis, Rich Lewis, and Annabelle Tuck researched the many unique aspects of the book and strains of commentary surrounding the Haggadah’s traditional text including the art, literary and historical organization, appeal to children, and practical use of the Haggadah bringing the high quality discussion to the table. The upcoming “Men on Main” on Friday, December 5 will provide a different entry point for congregants; both for those who have been invited to participate and for those who choose to attend. Jim Pfeifer is organizing and facilitating this look at local Jewish history with assistance from family members of Little Rock department store owners on Main Street. We have become aware that there is a thirst for learning the history as well as the desire to convey the information in a personal way. We are happy that the Religious School also provides various entry points to congregational life for adults within the School. Teaching in the school offers great opportunity for congregational involvement and Jewish learning. Additionally, we look to parents and friends to share their talents and skills and they often step up to become involved. For instance, two wonderful components of our successful Camp B’nai Israel – “Star Wars Adventure” program was the

appearance of R2D2 and the very cool night sky observatory, both made available by 2nd grade parent Joel Gordon. Joel contacted his friend and associate, arranged to transport, set-up the huge inflatable observatory and facilitated the star show, sharing his expertise and his personal connections with all of us. Another example is mother and grand-mother Emily Lewis who chats informally with parents about the challenges of raising mensches in our current times. The group is fluid and welcoming and encouraging while exchanging parenting ideas. Our young parents are participating and assisting with Shabbat Kids Club. Statistics indicate that young parents start to become involved with a Jewish institution when their kids are involved in an educational program there. Shabbat Kids Club is that entry point for some of our young parents. We encourage participation in Temple life because we know how much richer life can be when opened to Jewish thought and practice. I welcome all ideas that will increase opportunities to engage our congregants of all ages and in all stages. Please contact me with your ideas.
