The North of England Crisis Project – Organisational Collaboration in Clinical
Standard Setting

Background
• Commissioned by North of England Strategic Clinical Network for Mental Health and N.D
• Priority in 2012/13 to improve crisis resolution services
• Change in Crisis landscape• Funding for 6 month Project • Project hosted by North of England Mental
Health Development Unit (NEMHDU)
Project Brief 1
• Work collaboratively with Providers across SCN region
• Improve Practice and Reduce Variation• Patch includes North Yorkshire, Co. Durham,
Teesside, Wearside, Tyneside, Northumberland, North Cumbria
• Providers = TEWV, NTW, CPFT. Mix of rural and urban. Mix of deprived and affluent.
Project Brief 2
• Develop Clinical Standards for Crisis Resolution
• Scope resources and activity in Crisis Resolution services across SCN patch
• Raise profile of CRHT, inform discussion and direction of travel
• Prepare ground for next steps and potential further phase of Project
Project Governance
• Steering Group – Chair, SCN Lead, Senior Crisis clinicians, NEMHDU
• Provider Locality Leads – Clinicians x3. Leadership of Project in each provider area, engagement of clinicians, service users, task completion
• Whole Project consultation group and work shops
Clinical Standards 1
• Approach = Combination of existing standards and guidelines with local clinical expertise
• Review of existing literature and guidelines, used to shape and underpin approach
• `Best practice` approach • Build practical and useful standards to assist in
service development, applicable over various models
• Draft Standards work shopped at Regional events
Clinical Standards 2
• 4 Super Classes• 1 = Entry to Service• 2 = Treatment Interventions• 3 = Discharge Standards• 4 = Partnerships and Joint Working

• Super classes divided to sub classes (13)• For example; Super class 1 = Entry to ServiceSub class 1.1 = EntrySub class 1.2 = Crisis AssessmentSub Class 1.3 = Care Planning

• Sub classes divided to Clinical Standards (51)• For example;Sub class 1.2 = Crisis AssessmentCS 1.2.1 = Initial Crisis AssessmentCS 1.2.2 = Risk AssessmentCS 1.2.3 = Medical ReviewEtc..........Underpinned by references, validated through
clinical work shops
Next Steps Plan
• Presentation of Project to SCN Mental Health Network Event - 5 year work plan
• Identification of `Next Steps` sponsor • Publish to SCN website in full• Local Audit against Clinical Standards• Regional Crisis Clinical Network
