Welcome to NCCORC's 1997 Product Locator Guide!

This updated guide is intended to help you locate compost, mulch, and other types of recycled organic materials in North Carolina. The increase in the number of yard waste facilities operating in North Carolina in the last few years-mostly owned and operated by the public sector-is a clear response to the1993 landfill ban on yard waste. Although most material was given away or sold, 38 percent of the yard trimmings processed was stockpiled on site, unused. In producing the Product Locator Guide, we hope to encourage the use of recycled organic products by telling customers where to find them. We hope this guide will aid in developing a stable consumer demand for these products.

All North Casolina recycled organics producers have the opportunity to enter their product in this guide for free. If you would like to be on our mailing list, or would like to find out more about NCCORC, please get in touch with us -- we'd love to hear from you.

NCCORC's purpose in creating this guide is to help the consumer find sources of compost, mulch, and other soil amendment products. We do not endorse any particular producer in this book. Individuals should contact the producer directly concexning matexials.

What's In This ~ u i d e ? Each company listed in this guide completed the same form, but some listings are more thorough than others. Information provided is as followed:

Products. We gave producers the following definitions for product categories, asking them to choose the one that most accurately described their product.

Compost: Recycled organic product in which the feedstock(s) has undergone biological degradation, a process characterized by elevated temperatures in the range of 120" to 160°F. The product no longer resenlbles the feedstock(s) from which it was produced. Exanlples: yard waste compost, biosolids compost, manure compost.

Mulch: Recycled organic product derived from physical/mechanical processing of the feedstock(s) into a fairly uniform particle size. The product does not undergo significant biological decomposi- tion, does not resemble soil in appearance, and typically still resembles the feedstocks from which it was derived. Exan?ples: wood chips, pine bark mulch, chipped brush.

Liming Material: Recycled organic product that is derived from .

and/or mixed with an alkaline material capable of neutralizing soil acidity. The product is either registered with the NCDA as a liming agent or product analyses are available to consistently demonstrate its effectiveness as a liming agent. Exanzple: alkaline stabilized biosolids.

Fertilizer: Recycled organic product which consistently contains one or more of essential plant nutrients. The product is either registered with the NCDA as a fertilizer or product analyses are available to consistently demonstrate the claimed plant nutrient content. Example: granulated/pelletized biosolid.

Other: Recycled organic product that does not fall into any of the categories. (Producers were asked to describe the product).

Feedstocks. We asked producers to choose the following feedstock categories that applied.

Agriculture materials: Includes straw, bedding, crop residue, processing wastes from slaughterhouse, fish/shellfish processing.

Animal manures: Includes cow, pig, horse, and poultry manures. Biosolids: Wastewater solids that have been processed until they are

suitable for beneficial use. Food materials: Fruit and vegetable peelings, damaged or spoiled

produce, old bread, bakery items, used coffee grounds, egg shells.

Industrial organic materials: Non-food organics such as cotton fiberslcloth, wood shavings, sawdust, wood,brewery waste, paper pulp, tobacco sweepings, pharmaceutical wastes.

Mixed niunici~al solid waste: Conlniingled residential andlor comnlercial refuse.

Paper products: Separatedlrecycled newsprint and other waste paper products such as paperboard.

Silviculture materials: Includes bark and woodchips. Yard materials: Includes leaves, grass clippings, brush, small tree

limbs, stumps, and untreated wood. Other: (Producers were asked to describe).
