after a year’s hiatus, now seemed like a great opportunity to bring the nightingale back to

Brislington.

A lot has happened in the past year in the area. Biggest of all right now is the threat to the Wick Road library, which could close by 2016 if Bristol City Council have their way. Valerie Cobbin covers this issue on page 4.

We also have coverage of the 2015 General and local elections on pages 5-8. On page 10 you will findthe What’s On section.

Space is limited this month, but with your support, we can expand, cover more local topics, help local businesses grow and reach more people in the area. At the same time The Nightingale will let you know about what businesses and services are out there, what events are on, what community groups are doing and the state of our area.

It’s been a tough time but I am really grateful to all of the advertisers for giving me just about enough funds to get this issue out there.

HElP savE WicK Road liBRaRy FoR you and youR coMMunity4

Wick Road library is a well-used and much loved part of the community of Brislington,

st anne’s and Broomhill. it therefore came as a real shock when it was one of seven libraries earmarked for closure by Bristol city council as part of their review of the library service in response to a cut of £1.1 million to the library budget.

The Save Wick Road Library campaign was formed in response to this to raise awareness of the threat to the future of the library, and to lobby the council and library service to demonstrate how important Wick Road library is to the community.

It’s particularly puzzling that Wick Road has been selected for closure as its one of the best supported and most heavily used libraries in Bristol. Did you know that…

•In2013/14,therewere70,000visitstoWickRoad Library, making it the 9th most visited library out of 28 in Bristol and

•Thelibraryserves22,939Brislingtonresidents.An average cost of £4.12 per person per year.

•Childrenlovethelibrary,andWickRoadhastheeighth highest in the city for loans to children.

So what can you to do help? There’s a lot that local people can do to help with the campaign. You can:

1. Sign the petition (Google “Save Wick Road Library petition” to sign it online, or go into the library, or the Make and Do Emporium in Sandy Park Road to sign a paper copy). Many other shops around Brislington also have paper copies. Children can sign too. Once we have 3,500signatures,thecouncilhavetohaveadebate about the future of Wick Road Library.

2. Complete an official consultation form – online copies available, or pick up a paper copy from the library. This is the official way to have your say about keeping the library open. The consultationcontinuesuntil30thJune.

3. Followthecampaignonsocialmedia.Thereisalively,frequentlyupdatedFacebookpagecalled Save Wick Road Library, and a twitter campaign using the hashtag #savewickroad.

4. Attend a drop-in consultation meeting at the library on Tuesday 14th April at 2pm.

5. Writeto/tweet/contactyourlocalcouncillors,MPandGeorgeFergusonandletthemknowwhat you think about the proposal to close Wick Road Library.

There’s a strong feeling in Brislington, St Anne’s and Broomhill that we are poorly served in terms of community infrastructure, especially as we recently lost facilities such as the space at Wicklea community centre.

The decision will be taken on the future of our library, and all Bristol libraries, at the council meeting in July. Let’s support the Save Wick Road Campaign and send a clear message to Bristol City Council that we want them to keep our last remaining community resource open.

as you sit down to read this article, Parliament will have already dissolved ahead of the

General Election where Kerry Mccarthy is campaigning to be your MP for Bristol East. Kerry was elected as your MP ten years ago and she is now standing again as your labour candidate.

Over the past ten years, she has represented you in Parliament by raising issues like the increasing rise in food banks, urban pollination, marine protection and the bedroom tax. She continues to work with community groups across the constituency to help make Bristol East a safer and better place to live.

In Brislington, local residents are justifiably concerned about the Mayor’s inclusion of Wick Road Library on the list with the threat of closure. Kerry is heavily involved with the Save Wick Road Library campaign where she has expressed her full support to prevent the closure of this well-loved community space.

She said, “The Mayor has announced that no libraries will close until at least 2016 but we in the community need to maintain our momentum to ensure that the future of Wick Road Library is guaranteed for generations to come.”

As a Labour Councillor for Brislington West, I have had the privilege of campaigning with Kerry during the election period last year. When I was door-knocking with Kerry across the ward, I was struck by how appreciative many local residents were at her willingness to listen to, and act on, their concerns. Indeed, her work across the ward can be seen with the Paintworks development and the newly opened Hungerford Play Park.

In less than four weeks, you will have the opportunity to elect your MP and a new government. Please vote for Kerry as your Labour parliamentary candidate as she is part of the party that will get the houses we need built, vote to scrap the bedroom tax and reverse the privatisation of the NHS. She will continue to support our local schools, businesses, community groups and help all the wonderful people that make Bristol East such a diverse and vibrant place to live and work.

When Brislington Women’s institute formed in May 2013, there were only a few women at

that first meeting who had any experience of what the Wi was really about.

Over the past two years we have found out that the Women’s Institute:

The small team of women responsible for putting together the programme of events ask members what they want from their WI, and aim to deliver something that appeals to everyone. Already we’ve been on national rallies and taken part in trips, quizzes and competitions. This is in addition to our monthly programme of talks, workshops and activities.
