WANTED REGIONAL AP CHAIRMAN

For those of you who do not know, Peter Nesbit stepped down as AP Chairman for the Region this year after 16 years of dedication. I cannot thank him enough for what he has done, I miss him already.

For now I am holding down this position until a replacement is found. If you or someone you know is interested in this position please contact me @ [email protected]

Niagara Frontier Region Executive Reports President Richard Hatton Well it’s hard to believe that summer has blown by. Hope everyone had a great summer with family and relaxation maybe a little rail fanning. Let’s not forget our friends and their garden Railroads.

AGM

Due to the fact we are switching back to a spring convention after poor participation at the Huntsville Convention, there is no convention this calendar year. Since we need to have an annual AGM, this year’s is being held at the Brampton Show, Sunday October 6 @ 8:30 AM.

Since this is being held inside the show The Brampton group will have someone collecting the entrance fee to the show so that as soon as the meeting is over you can walk about the show but only in the building the meeting is in. As soon as the show opens you can wonder about the three buildings and enjoy some of the clinics.

This is a great opportunity for those members that have been unable to attend the conventions to attend. We will be looking for your feedback and suggestions.

It’s your NFR and we need your input. By working together we can build a better NFR. Looking forward to seeing everyone there,

Convention

By now everyone should have heard about the Convention being held near Hamilton in May of 2020. Check this Flimsy for much of the information and follow on the website as more information becomes available. Also watch your email for more updates.

Page 4: The NFR Flimsy...October 26 th from 9:00 am till 1:00 pm and held at the Port Credit Legion, Port Credit, 35 Front St North, Mississauga, L5H 2E1, 905-278-1705. The program will be;

Page 4—The NFR Frontier Flimsy—September 2019

The organizing committee is working diligently to put on a great show so let’s give them a deserving response and attend for a fun filled weekend. Looking forward to meeting many of you there.

AP Program

We now have AP Chair persons in every division but one and we are working on that.

By contacting the AP Chair you can arrange for house visits for judging as well as ask questions on how to work towards Your MMR. Even if you never achieve the goal, you will become a better modeller I know it’s working for me so take a chance and try the program

Thanks for your time and remember you only get out of something what you put in. So get involved with your local division. Volunteer, show your layout at a convention, open your layout to a Layout tour, send an article to the Flimsy editor etc.

There are an unlimited amount of ways for you to get involved so please get as involved as your lifestyle will allow. I believe the best part of being an NMRA member is the many friendships you build along the way. So get involved and have some fun.

Now let’s blow the dust off the Layouts and get to railroading.

American Vice President Matt Bierl Canadian Vice President Gerald Arends I have been a member of the NMRA for the last 8 years, mainly because I belonged to an all member club in Fort Myers. Last year I volunteered to be Canadian Vice President. Matt Bierl, the American VP and myself drove to Salt Lake City this summer, and along the way visited Big Boy in Omaha and the Golden Spike Tower in North Platte. From there we went to the last spike in

Promontory Utah, then on to the NMRA Convention in Salt Lake. Matt flew back to Buffalo, while my wife flew out to Salt Lake after the convention. But my rail fanning was not yet done. We went to visit family in Kelowna BC, but along the way I found this little museum in Midway BC, at mile 0 of the Kettle Valley. Also while in Kelowna I found the time to visit the Myra Canyon Trestles. On a slightly different note, we have sold our house in Florida, and I will be spending way more time in my garage working on my N scale layout. I look forward to helping with the convention this spring in Hamilton. Secretary Vacant – Tony Kerr Acting

Niagara Frontier Region Division Reports

Central Ontario Division Superintendent Richard Hatton Hello Fellow members of the COD.

First thing is I am still looking for volunteers to help organize events locally throughout the division. It is far too big an area for one person to cover so I would like to get a few people to work as a committee so we can do related events throughout the division. Many hands make light work.

So reach out to me at [email protected].

Let’s work together to make a better NFR.

Lee Valley in Vaughn

AGM

Don’t forget this year’s AGM is being held at the Brampton Show on Sunday October 6th at 8:30. For these of you that have been unable to attend one of our conventions it’s a great opportunity to come and voice your opinion on what you would like to see being done in the NFR.

Remember it’s your NFR so let’s work together to make it better.

I’ll be there and hope to see you as well.

International Division Superintendent Ron Johnson

The ID spring meet was at the Eva Rothwell Centre, April 13. Ray Hoadley presented a mind-boggling collection of photos in from Stelco’s Hilton Works.

Many of the never before seen images depict the 24 hour operation of the coke oven batteries, the blast furnace cast house floor, open hearth, teeming ingots, rolling steel and finishing mills. The big question was how did the previous generations of steel workers manage to live to retirement age.

Dennis Krout and Ron Tuff, MMR, joined to present techniques on scratchbuilding signals. Then, since one presenter was under the weather, Ron Tuff filled in with information about the Welland Canal area.

Dennis Krout points to his signal on HOMES layout

Then most members adjourned to the HOMES room in the basement for an operating session.

Now having been rebuilt in at least three locations, the layout replicates much of the TH&B line from Hamilton to Welland.

We have two events coming up. The Fall Meet will be Saturday, October 26th from 9:00 am till 1:00 pm and held at the Port Credit Legion, Port Credit, 35 Front St North, Mississauga, L5H 2E1, 905-278-1705. The program will be;

• Ron Tuff, MMR: Succeed in the Achievement Program • Mike Walton: Building his high plaster trestle from a

Settle and Carlyle prototype • Dan Notley: Our Home & Native Land.

Following that will be a Modeller’s Day Saturday, November 13th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm held at Lee Valley Tools, 6777 Morrison St, Niagara Falls, ON L2E 2G5. Info: (905) 371-1001. Please register at [email protected]

St. Lawrence Division Superintendent Malcolm Vant The SLD is starting this season with a couple of new faces in the executive. I took over from Chris Lyon as Super and Norm Levert has replaced me as Asst. Super. All of us at SLD would like to recognize Chris for his dedicated work as Superintendent, as well as to thank him for the many interesting clinics he has shared with us over the years. Chris and his wife will unfortunately be leaving our area to take up residence in the Halifax area. They will both be sorely missed! This fall, we have what should be an interesting, leader-led, all-scale Kitbusters project for the members to engage in – building a small bridge diorama. Kitbusters is a group building activity that we hold every year. Members get together every second meeting

to work on their projects together. As well, some of the clinics held at the other meetings are tied to the Kitbuster theme. Norm is kicking off the activity with a short article in our SLD Mailcar newsletter and an introductory clinic at our September meeting. The concept is to build a diorama with a small bridge over a road or a highway. The finished dioramas will hone several skills from bridge making, to track laying and applying appropriate scenery with grass, shrubs and water or road effects – time permitting. If all goes as planned, the dioramas are to be displayed at the Bayview Junction Convention, in the Hamilton area, in May 2020.

The SLD has agreed to host the May 2021 NFR convention. Ron Newby has already graciously agreed to chair the convention. With his experience and a strong team behind him, it should be a great event. More will follow in future reports, as we get closer to the date.

As noted above, many of the clinics this year will be oriented around the bridge theme, but they will be interspersed with others to keep things interesting. Ideas we have so far: introduction to bridge building, small bridges in our area that you can build - a photo tour, the history of the Prince of Wales and Alexandra bridges, modelling building interiors, signals controlled using LCC, and use of static grass materials in the context of our Kitbuster dioramas. Our first SLD Meeting of the season will be September 28 in Smiths Falls at the Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario (RMEO). Bruce Leckie and Gilbert Lacroix will be hosting us. They will be showing us the progress on the HO-scale model of the Smiths Falls CN yard and facilities being built at the museum in ex-CN coach 5802. They will also provide one clinic in the morning describing their project. The second clinic, as noted above, will introduce the bridge building theme. For all those who are in the eastern Ontario and western Quebec area, why not come join us. The September meeting in Smiths Falls may be an especially good time for those living in areas to the south of Ottawa to drop in and

meet your fellow SLD members. Our regular Saturday gathering always includes a display table, two clinics and layout tours. We have five clinic days and three Kitbuster meetings each season.

SLD is very much involved in our local model railroad community and once again this fall many members will be participating in the Canadian Association of Railway Modellers, Capital Region Model Railway Tour on Saturday, 19 October. Over twenty layouts are already registered for the tour. Several of them are new for this year. Visit their website http://capitaltrains.ca for more information.

BAYVIEW JUNCTION 2020 Niagara Frontier Region Annual Convention

Hamilton, ON May 22-24, 2020

The 2020 Annual Convention is now very much in the planning stages for May 22-24, 2020. (The 2019 event has been cancelled).

The location will be at Mohawk College, 135 Fennell Ave W, Hamilton, ON L9C 0E5, which is on the north side of the Hamilton Mountain.

Bayview Junction was chosen as the theme, as this is the name of the vast interchange where the CN’s mainline splits to go towards either Niagara Falls or London/Windsor. In addition, GO transit has trackage rights for trains into Hamilton, the Canadian Pacific (ex TH&B) winds its way through the same area, and the VIA train passes by on its way to New York. All this is on public accessible property (more or less) and the hills, water features and surrounding Royal Botanical Gardens will make camera enthusiasts very happy indeed.

All this was under the control of Bayview Junction tower, now, alas torn down. To commemorate this loss the convention is sponsoring a contest for best Tower. See details elsewhere.

Known as the “Steel City”, Hamilton has long been admired by rail fans as the site for extensive heavily weathered industrial trackage, most of which remains. Moving on to the modern era, visitor need not worry about grungy accommodations. Modern Hamilton features outstanding residential areas, shopping districts, restaurants and museums.

As a key part of the event, we plan to direct you to local model clubs, home layouts, historic stations and mansions, and even wall

murals. Clinics planning is in the early stages, and while featuring local operations we hope to have something for everyone: history, operations, modelling techniques, etc.

Despite all this activity we are keeping a close eye on the budget, and plan to deliver a very affordable affair for both registration and accommodations, including if you bring a partner.

Naturally, many of the details remain to be settled, but watch this space for my exciting details.

Accommodations

Recent conventions have moved to college campuses, and Mohawk is able to offer up to 50 rooms that are modern, affordable and private. The address is Address is 245 Fennell Ave. W. which is above the mountain on Upper 5th, one stoplight from Upper James. The clinics and banquet will be on the main campus which is immediately across the drive. The rooms will be held until April 30, after which the campus will be able to rent to others. Availability and price are not guaranteed after that date.

All Mohawk suites consist of two private bedrooms with one (double) bed in each room, a kitchenette (microwave, full fridge, counter, kitchen table) and a private 3-piece bath.

The college is renting the suite, so the same price gets two bedrooms. Therefore, anyone who wants to share with spouse or friend could split the cost, thus saving 50%. . The college does not match people who wish to share.

Included are complementary parking for overnight guests, wifi, full housekeeping, on- site laundry, movie lounge and fitness centre. Parking is strictly controlled; $5 per day on the weekend, but the price is included for residents. Your license plate must be accurately entered or a fine will be added. (Ask me how I know).

The dorm has a TV room which is available to residents on a first-come, first-serve basis. It might be possible to set up an informal slide viewing period if there is an interest in doing this.

Food/Banquet

We have reserved a room for the banquet within the college. They have a complicated list of menu items and bar arrangements, so arrangements will be announced later.

Unfortunately, all food services, even snack bars, will be closed during the summer weekends. There is a nearby strip mall on James Street which has a McDonalds within the Wal-Mart and a small Tim’s inside the mall. Otherwise, drive south along Upper James and you will encounter a wide selection of restaurants. Be sure to allow time for these excursions “off-campus”.

Clinics

Clinics are a key part of any convention. We have classrooms reserved within the campus. Our hope at the moment is to have about 15 clinics on a variety of topics. If you are interested in presenting (and claiming points for an Achievement Award), contact

Ron Johnson at [email protected].

Layout Tours

We are building on the fine effort of the HOMES club, who organizes the annual are layout tour. They typically have about 20 layouts, but that number is to be determined. The bulk of the opportunities will probably on Sunday to allow participants to plan their exit. HOMES members are also willing to open the Club for viewing during the Layout Tour portion of the program

Operating session

The HOMES club have volunteered to host a guest operating session probably held on Friday afternoon, similar to the Ottawa convention, leaving our members to partake in the clinics etc. and also not interfere with a few of them possibly being layout hosts during the Layout Tour. We are open to other modellers who may wish to host an operating session.

We will be offering the following Model Contests at the Bayview Junction 2020 Convention: Judged Model Contest: This is the traditional NFR Judged Model Contest. Models will be evaluated by a panel of judges using the NMRA National AP judging guidelines. Models scoring at least 87.5 points out of 125 (score of 70 % or greater) will receive a Merit Award certificate. Rules, entry forms and other information will be available on the NFR convention website: http://nfrconvention.ca Popular Choice Contest: Modellers not wishing to enter the Judged Model Contest may still bring models to display in the Popular Choice Display Area. All convention delegates will receive a ballot and may vote for their favourite model anywhere in the contest room, including models entered in the Judged Model Contest. Rules and the entry form for the Popular Choice Display will be also be available on the NFR convention website: http://nfrconvention.ca Bayview Junction 2020 Interlocking Tower Contest: Models of any interlocking tower entered in either the Judged Contest, or brought for display in the Popular Choice Display Area, will automatically be entered in this special convention contest. All convention delegates may vote for their favourite interlocking tower anywhere in the contest room. Interlocking tower entries from a previous Judged Model Contest are also welcome in the Popular Choice Display Area and will be eligible for this special convention contest balloting. No additional entry form is required for the Interlocking Tower Contest, beyond either the Judged or Popular Choice Display entry forms. A very nice drawing of the CNR Bayview Junction Tower, prepared by Al Welch, will be available for those wishing to try their hand at building it.

Note: The NFR Prototype and Freelance Appearance Contest is not being offered at the Bayview Junction 2020 Convention and is essentially replaced by (2) and (3) above. Prepared by:

James Whatley Model Contest Chair Bayview Junction 2020 Convention [email protected]

Non-Rail activities

Rather than set up indoor activities on a nice spring weekend, we are arranging with the Tourist Bureau in Hamilton who have a collection of brochures and activities available, e.g. waterfall tours, malls, charming shopping streets, museums, waterfront activities, etc. We hope to have an introduction on the night of arrival, perhaps a speaker. I’ve made a contact with the Hamilton Convention and Visitors Bureau who will, at minimum

This 2019-2020 modeling season I offered to organize the WOD clinics. Our first event will be at the Ingersoll Seniors Centre, 250 Ingersoll Rd. South in Ingersoll on September 28. This will be a morning get together 9am-12pm.

The Magic of Rust, adding rust to structure models and rolling stock is a favourite step with modellers. This is a hands-on getting rusty clinic that one can bring a metal roof building or work on a supplied piece of metal roofing (the supplied metal roof will become the lean-to for the Spring Make and Take Dannen Seeds). One can also bring a covered hopper that needs a bit of rust as the same technique will work great there also. We will make sure you go home with something nice. The steps are very easy and one will be surprised with the results, even as a first-timer. All the acrylics and powders will be supplied. Some fine and micro brushes will be available but why not bring your favourite brush along. You will be guided in two different approaches by George Dutka and Don Janes.

NMRA Achievement Program, Gary Shurgold MMR will discuss the process one must follow to receive AP certificates which leads to becoming an MMR. Gary will have some of his paperwork that was submitted for us to view.

Rolling Stock KIT-BASHES. Peter Mumby will discuss how he and I have cleaned out the closet of our combined dust collection stock of rolling stock shells, decals and drawers of detail parts to come up with some really neat looking prototypical models. Get some inspiration to clean out your own stockpile. With new rolling stock costing one over $50 why not find out how to build some detailed models for under $10.

Another 2019 gathering will be in London on November 16th. In the mid afternoon three layouts will be open to visit including my own, the White River Division. After supper the group will gather

for an evening hands-on work session. The location will be finalized shortly and will be found on the WOD web page shortly.

It’s all about the details! Guided by George Dutka the group will work on details that enhance a scene or layout…the little stuff. We will work on details in N, HO and O scale. Most of the details go together rather quickly so a variety of builds will be tried. Details on hand are from Osborn, Aberdeen Car Shops, Bar Mills and FOS scales. Bring along a hobby knife, straight edge and glue we will supply the rest.

So WOD-NFR members, come on out and try your hand at maybe a new approach to modeling.

A Walther feed store has had its metal sides weathered with rust spots applied. A very simple technique that one will learn in September.

The same technique is used on this Bar Mills O scale structure years after I built it…kind of an upgrade.

The FOS scale fish house has a lot of metal siding that is actually made from cardstock. It is being weathered to reflect a well-worn structure.

The finished fish house is ready to be installed in a waterfront scene.

In November one will build various details such as these O Scale crates

offered by FOS scale.

Aberdeen Car Shops has a nice selection of Canadian shipping crates that we

will build. Mine have been used as a boxcar load.

CN Bayview Tower Bayview Tower was located at the intersection of CN’s Dundas, Oakville and Mimico Subs near the city of Hamilton Ontario.

The tower was originally of all-wood construction, but at some time, later in its life, it was sheathed with tiles, likely made from asbestos. These tiles covered the sides up to the beltline. Above this, the sides were covered in some kind of stucco, likely of asbestos too.

The present drawing was made based on a sketch by the late Frank Dubery. The sketch lacked two of the primary views and these were constructed from photographs.

The tower was removed by 1960 after the installation of CTC in the area.

The font on the letterboard is slightly heavy. If one wants a better approximation, one could consult the photo in Ian Wilson’s “Steam Through London” page 15 to use as a guide.

The colours in the 3D illustrations are to help identify the various parts. See the drawing for actual colours.

If one wants to build a model of the tower, .stl files, in HO are available for 3D printing of the windows and doors.
