The Next Big Thing Rules, Regulations, and Scoring

Criteria

1) All artists must submit an application form by March 21, 2011 to ASUA located on the 3rd floor of the Student Union Memorial Center (SUMC) Right above the bookstore. Artists must also pay a $15 nonrefundable fee at the time of their submission. Checks must be payable to The University of Arizona. All submissions should be submitted in a manila envelope with artist name on front.

2) Entry packets must include an audio file (mp3 or CD) of at least two songs. One song must be an original. Video of a performance is not required, and will substitute for an audio file. Submissions must also include a short band bio, and photo if possible. Address all submissions to University Activities Board Att: Arts (preferred method) or email to [email protected].

3) Artists who are asked to perform at the Next Big Thing will be selected by a committee of students and staff at the University of Arizona. Artists will be notified by March 25th of if they are selected or not.

4) All Artists must be available to perform on March 28th, 29th, 30 from 4:30pm – 7:00pm for preliminary rounds and March 30th from 4:30pm – 7:00pm if they are chosen to perform at the finale. Time slots will be chosen at random.

5) All artists will receive an equal amount of time on stage (30 minutes). This time includes all set-up, playing, and tear-down time. A stage crew member will be on hand to assist each artist in setting up and sound check. It is the band’s responsibility to set gear and be ready to perform within the allotted time. Artists will be given space and time to sell merchandise starting the set before theirs, and ending at the conclusion of the band after them.

For every minute exceeding the 30 minute limit, the band will be penalized 5 points from their total score.

Only 2 cover songs per set will be allowed. Bands who play more than 2 cover songs may be eliminated.

6) Stage management has the final say on all artists’ activities on and off stage. Any artists going over time or disregarding event management’s direction may be disqualified or powered off.

7) The Next Big Things is open to unsigned only. For the purpose of this contest, an unsigned is somebody without a major-label recording contract who makes less than half their annual income by performing. All artists must have at least one University of Arizona student as a member of the group. Solo performers must be University of Arizona students.

8) Any distasteful behavior, and/or damage to U of A Mall Stage or the sound equipment will result in an automatic disqualification and artists will be liable for any monetary damage incurred. Drugs and alcohol are not permitted at the competition. Any artists under the influence of drugs or alcohol will automatically be disqualified. Any bands inciting riots, moshing, crowd surfing, or any acts that may be harmful to the audience will automatically be disqualified and powered off.

9) All preliminary rounds and the Finale are free admission and take place on the UA Mall Stage. The winner will play at Spring Fling. Artists are strongly encouraged to partake in the selling of tickets to get a larger crowd presence to enhance their judges score in audience participation.

10) Winners of preliminary rounds will be determined by audience votes. The top two bands in each preliminary will advance to the finale.

11) A panel of judges will score artists on a 1-10 scale in five categories during the finale.

Music (This criteria is based on clarity, lyrical content and overall musical performance)

Stage Presence and Crowd Interaction (This Criteria is based on how well the artist interacts with the crowd)

Appearance and Personality (This criterion is based on the overall look and personality of the artists as a whole.)

Original Material (This criterion judges the most important part of your act, your original material! The performer wants to show originality in both their lyrical and instrumental performance to impress the judges).

Crowd Applause (The key ingredient to have an awesome: THE FANS!)

12) The University Activities Board will not be held accountable for any broken equipment, injuries, or any other negative occurrences outside of our staff’s control.

13) All artists agree to have their names, voices, and/or likenesses used in any advertising or broadcasting material relating to this contest without any compensation or rights to royalties for such use.

14) The University Activities Board reserves the right to make changes to the rules and regulations of the contest as well as the final work in any disputes that should arise concerning the contest. All band members must sign the registration form acknowledging they have read and understand the rules as outlined in this document. All band members under the age of 18 are required to have a parent or guardian sign the document on their behalf as well. Failure to comply with any contest rules may result in the artist being disqualified.
