Nexans Kabelmetal Nigeria quality analysis revealed the following serious lapses on a variety of wiring cables procured from Lagos markets - out of which two are highlighted below - .

Substandard LENGTH: Instead of standard coils of 100m (100 meters) each, coils of 25 m length were the shortest and the longest measured 78m in length. None of the coils was 100 m long.

Substandard conductor material: Copper coated steel, instead of plain annealed high conductivity copper was de-tected. The higher conductor resistance of the copper coated steel conductors results in overheating of the cable when in use and eventually in fire outbreak.

An easy method to detect a 100 m coil is by weighing the cable. The following approx. weights apply: Single core PVC insulated coil of 100 m, NCY 1.5 mm2 is 2.0 kg, NCY 2.5 mm2 is 3.2 kg, NCY 6 mm2 is 6.5 kg, 2 core flat PVC insulated and PVC sheathed NCYY-F 2 x 1.0 mm2 is 4.7 kg To distinguish a copper conductor from a copper coated steel conductor is by

(i) Checking the ends of the coil and have a look at the appearance of the copper. It should be a shiny Copper tone with no sign of silverish center. A silverish middle indicates that steel is present which is covered with

a layer of copper and that means the conductor is not plain copper. (ii) Mechanically, the copper coated steel is harder and more efforts are needed to bend the conductor than what is required to bend a plain annealed copper conductor. (iii) Use of a magnet: Copper is non-magnetic. If you feel that a magnet is attracted to the conductor, then the

conductor contains steel and is sub-standard (except for a few telephone type cables).

Picture below shows: 100 m standard length coils of NCY 2.5 mm2, produced by Nexans.
