LISTEN TO MY NEW DOCTOR!

Q: Doctor, I've heard that cardiovascular exercise

can prolong life. Is this true?

A: Heart only good for so many beats, and that it...

Don't waste on exercise. Everything wear out eventu-

ally. Speeding up heart not make you live longer; it like

saying you extend life of car by driving faster. Want to

live longer? Take nap.

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?

A: Oh no.Wine made from fruit. Brandy distilled wine,

that mean they take water out of fruity bit so you get

even more of goodness that way. Beer also made of

grain. Bottom up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?

A: Well, if you have body and you have fat, your ratio

one to one.. If you have two body, your ratio two to

one.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participat-

ing in a regular exercise program?

A: Can't think of single one, sorry. My philosophy: No

pain...good!

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?

A: YOU NOT LISTENING! Food fried in vegetable oil.

How getting more vegetable be bad?

Q : Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little

soft around the middle?

A: Oh no! When you exercise muscle, it get bigger.

You should only be doing sit-up if you want bigger

stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?

A: You crazy?!? HEL-LO-O!! Cocoa bean! Another

vegetable! It best feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?

A: If swimming good for figure, explain whale to me.

Q: Is getting in shape important for my lifestyle?

A: Hey! 'Round' is shape! Well... I hope this has

cleared up any misconceptions you may have had

about food and diets.

Formula e ???

by Roger Marshall, MGOB

I tired of watching the NFL and was channel surfing on

Sunday, Nov 23. I came across what I thought was a

Formula 1 race but knew that had just finished. Some-

how these cars looked different from F1. Then I realized I

was watching electric cars racing. Yep, electric. After a

while I realized I could hear the whine of the electric mo-

tors as opposed to the scream of the F1 engine.

This isn't the first time.

Clearly this is a different ball game. The Spark-Renaut

SRT_01E is the first car to be "homologated" by the FIA.

McLaren Electronis Systems provided the electric power-

train. I was wondering how long the power would last,

was it a rechargeable system, how fast could it be re-

chared?

The answer, in part, came on the first pit-stop that I saw.

Instead of pulling into the "pit" as F1, Indy, Nascar, etc

do, the FE drove right into the garage, the driver hopped

out of the car and ran to a similar car sitting next to it and

the crew strapped him in. No it's not as fast as F1, Indy,

etc. but it was interesting to watch. When ready the car

pulled out and back to the track as normal. No clue as to

if they used just 2 cars but I think that's the case. The

driver had the ability to change the wattage his car was

using and control kept him informed of the percentage of

power left in his battery.

This was the second race - called Round 2. When the

winner of the first-ever Formula E race took the cheq-

uered flag in the Beijing ePrix he was the first driver to

use two cars to take victory in an international single-

seater race in almost 70 years.

This 2nd race was held in Putrajaya, Malaysia on Nov 22,

2014, though I watched it on the 23rd on what I thought

was NBCSN but I'm not sure now. The next race ( Round

3) will run on December 13, 2014. More information is at

Formula E ????

Ok so this is not about our LBCs but the thought has occurred to me several times about trying this system.

The photo at the left may not be about MG I but I

can’t make out the badge on the top front of the

radiator. At first I thought it was just a great pho-

to but then I discovered that the guy in the hat is

an old friend of mine, formerly from Fells Point

and now living in Arizona.

His name is Phil Pfeiffer. I knew Phil and his wife

Barbara while I was working at Fells Point Corner

Theater downtown. What a wonderful couple they

are. About 2002 they moved to Arizona. Note

the clothing !

Phil told me he use to know the owner of Moss

Motors way back when. At any rate, great to see

my old friend still kicking and enjoying old cars.

Diagnosing Starting Problems

by Bill Unger

Grand Strand British Car Club

When your LBC refuses to start for you in the

morning as you get ready to go to school or

work or to a car club gathering, it can be very

frustrating to track down the source of the

problem quickly

enough to get on the road. Oh well, just leave

the car in the garage and drive your more de-

pendable (but boring) Japanese or American

jelly bean sedan and tackle the issue another

day. But if you are already on the road and

your LBC refuses to restart, then you are fac-

ing a potentially embarrassing and expensive

prospect. You will

have to either get the beast started again or

you may have to call a flatbed to haul your

beauty home and explain the event to a

spouse who “told you so”.

In either scenario, you need to keep a cool

head and methodically hunt down the problem

without jerking back and forth from one end of

the car to the other as well as crawling under

the scuttle and

bonnet. And if you are on the road, you may

also have a limited arsenal of tools to assist.

So gain a basic understanding of how your car

works and follow this simple procedure that I

use.

Ignition Switch in “ON” Position But Instru-

ments Do Not Work, Then Check:

) brown wire from battery to ignition switch #1

loose or disconnected

) white wire from ignition switch #2 to hot side

of fuse block #6-7 loose or disconnected

) fuse #6 or #7 blown (windshield washer and

wipers, horn, stop lights, backup lights, choke

lamp, handbrake lamp, gauges) Ignition

Switch in “START” Position and Instru-

ments Work But Engine Does Not Crank,

Then Check:

) brown wire from ignition switch #1 to starter

solenoid relay 02

) white/yellow wire from ignition switch #3 to starter sole-

noid relay WI

) white/red wire from starter solenoid relay C1 to starter

solenoid

) black wire from starter solenoid relay W2 to ground

) black wire from starter solenoid to ground Ignition

Switch in “START” and Instruments Work Except

Tachometer and Engine Cranks

1) white wire from hot side of fuse block 6-7 to tachometer

) white wire from tachometer to ignition coil Ignition

Switch in “START” Position and All

Instruments Work and Engine Cranks But Does

Not Fire,

Then Check:

) wires to ignition coil

) high tension wire from ignition coil to distributor cap

) faulty ignition points (no gap or burned contacts)

) faulty points condenser or poor wire connection

) faulty ignition coil

) faulty fuel delivery (fuel pump not working or

carb float needle stuck closed)

Engine Cranks But Will Only Fire If

Battery is Boosted,

Then Check:

) poor battery cable connections

) weak battery voltage below minimum required

for electronic ignition even if engine cranks

) long wiring runs or other causes of high re-

sistance drops voltage below minimum required

for electronic ignition

Engine Starts But Fires Erratically,

Then Check:

) high tension wire from ignition coil to distributor

cap or spark plug wires or terminals loose, wet,

cracked

) faulty distributor cap (burned or broken contacts,

cracked)

) fouled or damaged spark plugs

) faulty fuel delivery (low fuel pump pressure,

clogged fuel filter, carburettor defects)

Engine Dies While Driving, Restarts Easily or Only

With Key Jiggling, Then Check:

I) loose wires on back of ignition switch

) burned or defective contacts within ignition switch Keep

a copy of this procedure (adapted for the specifics of your

car) in your glove box along with a copy of your car’s wir-

ing diagram. As you gain familiarity with your car, make

additional notes such as “relay located above starter” or

“original brown wire replaced with red wire”. Carry a flash-

light, extra relays, lengths of spare wiring and crimp con-

nectors, jumper wires with alligator clips, and basic tools

to assist you. Good luck!

Overheard at the Car Show

“Ohhhhh….look at all the pretty cars !”

“I like the red one!”

“I like the other red one !”

“I wonder how fast they go ?”

“I like the the black one. I bet it goes real fast!”

“I have to go to the bathroom.”

“When I grow up I want a car just like that one! No, that

one, No that one, No…..

LUG NUT TIGHTENING

by Roger Marshall

On the tv show, MotorWeek, Pat Goss discussed impact wrenches used to install wheels on automobiles. He noted

how impact wrenches used in most garages have been increased in power to the point that some tighten wheel nuts

to the point that the average person cannot remove them.

Have a flat tire and try to loosen the wheel with a standard lug wrench just won't do the trick if the nuts are so over

tightened. The normal torque for a lug nut is 80 ft lbs. Imagine trying to loosen one that was tightened to 1200 ft

lbs.

Pat says the right way to tighten wheels is by using a standard torque wrench. I asked about that at a garage when

I had tires replaced. The owner showed me extensions for their air guns that fit a range of torque so I felt better. I
