Happy New Year!

Dear Reader,

I hope you all had a good Christmas and New Year and may I wish you all a very happy

2016. A new year brings new challenges and opportunities, whether it's mastering a

new method, ringing your first quarter peal or ringing your first peal. Like life

bellringing is one of those hobbies where you never seem to stop learning. So let's

hope that 2016 is good for you, your team and the District.

Unfortunately this will be my last "Changes" as Editor as I now find my time is being

taken over by other commitments. Thank you for all your support over the last two

year and I wish the new Editor every success in the future.

Minutes of the Alton & Petersfield District

Autumn Meeting

Saturday 17th October 2015

All Saints, East Meon

1. Chairman’s welcome & vote of thanks. Charlotte Lloyd thanked everyone for coming. She

thanked Teresa Brown & the East Meon ringers for our tea & for arranging the venue.

Charlotte then introduced and thanked Dan Graham who judged the striking competition which

took place before the meeting. He then gave out the results in order of ringing teams and praised the

ringers for some good striking. Team 1: 25 faults, Team 2: 19 faults, Team 3: 26 faults, Team 4: 29

faults, Team 5: 31 faults. The judges had a ring before the competition to see what the bells were

like to ring and where likely faults would occur and felt the standard of ringing was good and had

enjoyed listening to the ringing. The names of the towers were then read out with last being called

out first.

5th place Scratch team made up of ringers from several towers; 4th place Hawkley/Selborne; 3rd

place Buriton; 2nd place Alton; 1st place East Meon.

The ringers then gave a round of applause in appreciation of the judges.

2. Apologies for absence were received from Teresa Brown, who couldn’t stay for the meeting but

had helped with teas and rung in the competition; Mike Kerton (Steep); Sue Walker (Petersfield).

3. Presentation of trophies and certificates. Certificates were given out starting with fifth place –

the scratch team; Hawkley/Selborne received the trophy for best call changes and 4th certificate;

Meon.

4. Minutes of last two meetings & matters arising. Point 5. Guild Exec report Roger Barber

Andy Banks then went on to confirm this. This was duly noted and amended on the minutes before

being signed by Charlotte Lloyd, Chairman.

5. Report on district officer’s forum. Charlotte Lloyd went as the A&P representative to this

8. Guild Exec Reports. Andy Banks gave his report from the last guild exe committee meeting 7th

March 2015 at Southampton and also a report from the AGM 4th July which took place at

Curdridge. (See separate reports). Andy said he would be standing down from the post at the ADM

in January after 17years in the post. There was heartfelt applause for his long term commitment to

the post.

9. Any other business.

(a) Striking competition rules. Terry pointed out that there are no rules to allow 2 towers to ring

together as a team in a competition. Mo Routh proposed a change in striking competition rules to

allow two towers to amalgamate, all being Sunday ringers. Terry seconded the proposal and the

motion was carried. This would be taken forward to the ADM in January.

(b) Charlotte asked the meeting members to consider standing as secretary. Joint secretaries both

standing down after their three year term of office completes in January. This could be a joint post.

Valerie is going to send out a description of the post.

(c) Mike Novell said he wishes to stand down as Changes Editor and looking for someone to take

on the post at the ADM.

(d) Charlotte said there were still queries on Guild Insurance. Melanie Moore wanted to know the

reason for £2 charge on junior probationers. Mo Routh as Guild secretary wanted to know if the

recent insurance information had been circulated to members. There was a general discussion and

Mo agreed to send the information out again. The insurance is not a personal insurance.

(e) Graham Cane agreed to continue Surprise Practices. The next one is 21st November at St.

Lawrence, Alton. He wanted also to welcome district ringers to his own outing in Dorset 31st

October.

(f) Toby Arkless brought the attention of the meeting to the illness of Andrew Barnsley who has a

tumour on his spine. Valerie Harris will send a sympathy card on behalf of the district.

(g) Malcolm believed he would be standing down as treasurer in January, but the group said he had

another year to go as the 3 year post does not finish at the same time as the secretaries. If anyone is

interested he will show them what is required for this post.

(h) Andy Banks circulated a job description for the Guild Exec post.

Chairman’s report by Charlotte Lloyd

My chairman’s report for this year is on my observations, at our District Officer’s forum, that I

attended on 3rd October. The main topic of conversation was recruitment and those of us present

shared several ideas on how best to advertise our presence.

One idea was to possibly run teaching sessions advertising this generally to such organisations such

as Scouts, youth clubs etc. Also by visiting places like schools and colleges to verbally advertise

and using medium like posters, flyers or leaflets, briefing what we do and contact details. Or, an

open demo evening, maybe a come and try day.

Also discussed was the issue of recruiting from our ranks, more teachers to maintain ringing for the

future. This is to promote the culture of change ringing by increasing the number of efficient ringers

across the Guild.

Another idea discussed was due to the problems of distance, for some, having to reach a meeting

such as the Guild AGM. This is, to perhaps have the meeting on Isle of Wight or Jersey/Guernsey

once every 4/5 years and making a day of it, so that those ringers from those islands get a break.

I will finish my report with a quote from Viv Nobbs, Guild Master who said “Anything that makes

young people respond and start to ring, thus providing well trained teachers of the future, should be

pursued.

Correction In the last issue of Changes, October 2015, it was stated that the Quarter Peal rung for David and

Carol Coopers Renewal of Vows was Grandsire Doubles. It was actually Plain Bob Doubles.

Sincere apologies to David and Carol for this error.

They've been together for forty years - extra! On the front page of the last issue we showed a picture of David and Carol cutting the cake at their

Renewal of Vows Service. Let's turn the clock back.... here is a picture of the happy couple on their

wedding day forty years ago.
