ST. PETER'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH Sanctuary in the heart of Lewes June 2014 Volume 9, Issue 6 ST. PETERS KEYS The newsletter of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church MUTTERINGS FROM MARK, ASSOCIATE PRIEST Change... It’s the end of the world as we know it .. it always is. When the Rector of all Lewes and surrounding environs left on sabbatical there were a number of people who got a bit nervous. There was a bit of “the end of the world as we know it” syndrome. How would we do? How could we be the parish we all love without Jeffery as Rector? Would we be the same? As we may have expected, we missed him greatly. We discovered all sorts of little things that he quietly did that now had to be attended to by others in his absence. It turned out that the leadership of the clergy team was not the same as the leadership of the Rector. And most importantly, we missed him as the pastor he has been. It was all .. well, different. Still, I think we all did OK. Better than OK, we did fine. “The end of the world as we knew it” happened and we moved on. Fr. Jeff will be back in a week and a bit (but who’s counting?) and again, there will be joy here, but also a bit of nervousness. Will he be the same? Will we? Will the relationship between the priest and parish be different? And of course the answer is, he will not be the same, nor will we, and the relationship will be refreshed and renewed, and yes, it will be different. It will be “the end of the world as we knew it.” And it will be fine. It turns out the little changes, the small day to day differences, make each day new. We missed Jeffery when he went to walk the Camino, we will be glad to have him back. But most importantly we remember again that it is always the case that “it is the end of the world as we know it,” and that that is OK, because the realities of God’s love for us, and our love and care for one another, make our comings and goings just that .. comings and goings. Each day is new and each day brings love and care sufficient for the day, for God does indeed provide. And God continues to provide us with wonderful pastoral leadership, for Jeffery is coming back. Change... VESTRY MINUTES—MAY 6, 2014 Youth and Family Ministry (as reported by Mende) Nursery: Nothing to Report Godly Play: There are only 3 Sundays left in the program year. It is hard to believe that I have been doing this for

9 months. I believe the best news of the school year is that we were able to sustain consistent attendance. We have approximately 25 children registered and averaged 17/18 each week in attendance. You should be very pleased with the commitment of your parents in this age group. The second best news is that they are actually listening and on some occasions learning. Still need two or three more volunteers for these two classes fall 2014.

Spy Explorers: I am currently working on curriculum for the fall. I will teach this class, but still am looking for another volunteer so that I can occasionally be in another classroom so I don’t lose touch with the children.

Spy Middle: Spy Middle is finished for the year and will resume in a new time slot in the fall so as to no longer conflict with Choristers, which has been an ongoing and frustrating problem. I am currently working on curriculum for Tom and Karen to use. Still looking for two more volunteers to work with this group.

Spy High: Camp Arrowhead weekend went well. Stock sales have gone well. Finalizing the South Dakota trip details. Stations of the Cross went well and I have had quite a lot of positive feedback from parishioners as to how much they enjoyed it and how meaningful it was. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Dean Belt for coming to our rescue last minute on Good Friday to repair the broken cross. While I have thanked him, you may wish to do so as well. He is my hero.

Discussion followed. Mende has done a fantastic job. How do we proceed from here? Senior Warden’s Report Art Show is sponsored by St. Peter’s Church, the ECW sponsors the luncheon and raffle. Goals and Tasks: Will be working on a 2 year budget and Diocese is reviewing benefits for staff. Bishop will be visiting June 22nd. Jeff will be meeting with him early June and discuss his schedule for the day. Jeff will be back and celebrating at the Services on June 1st. Junior Warden’s Report Repair Sacristy exterior — Reviewing estimates and door & church front door select contractor no later than 5/15 New carpet in the church — Investigate/secure estimates and chapel Church roof/shingle repairs — Still awaiting ARBC report Replace graveyard labyrinth — Seeking design suggestions; investigating state grant Install new highway signs — Bob installed five signs Repair Parish Hall stair — Keith Hennessy contracted Disaster Preparedness Committee working on disaster plans and will present soon. Stewardship (as reported by Tom Crowley) As I work my way into the stewardship chair role, I am very grateful for all the help and suggestions I have received. If you know of anyone who would like to join me in the stewardship effort, pass their names along. As John Wooden said, “It is amazing how much can be accomplished if no one cares who gets the credit.” Worship and Music Confirmation Class has started with 9 people attending. Choir ends in June for the summer.

ALTAR FLOWERS POLICY CHANGES: Effective May, 2014 there will be a new Altar Flower policy. We allow for TWO dedications per Sunday, which means two contributors can dedicate altar flowers each Sunday, with the exception of Easter and Christmas. Our new policy requires a maximum of ONE dedication per donation (i.e., only one “in memory of”, “in honor of”, “in celebration of”, “in thanksgiving for”, etc.). If you would like to have more than one dedication, then you will have to be the only donor for that given Sunday, which might not be an option. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the office or [email protected].

receivers. Supervision sessions are being held every two weeks; the sessions also include continuing education for all Stephen Ministry members.

Other Missions The Pilgrimage to the Scottish Isle of Iona will be from April 23rd to May 4th, 2015, and will be led by the Revs. Carlyle Gill and Jeffrey Ross.

Art Show The art show core group has been meeting monthly, and the meetings will become more frequent as we get closer to the show on July 5. The jury process has been completed and letters of acceptance and regret have been sent to the appropriate applicants. The next major project will be the booth assignments, which will occur this month. There is a need for individuals to “co-manage” the responsibilities of two of our sub-committees, silent auction and logistics, and we are asking individuals who may be interested in undertaking these tasks to contact one of the co-chairs or the current overseers of those two areas. Bruce and Barbara Mellen are responsible for the silent auction, and Jay Rooney is the logistics representative. If you have any questions concerning volunteer opportunities or would like to sign up in advance, please contact the show volunteer coordinators Tracy Mulveny at 379-0072 or Sue Potts at 542-2271.

Rector’s Report (Mark Harris) The 3 clergy have worked well together. Some items on the calendar for Jeff to follow through with. Holy Week went well and some services were done a little differently.

ART SHOW LUNCHEON In the early years of the Art Show, ECW members roasted turkeys and baked cookies at their homes. ECW history tells us that one year, Tom Best roasted them on a spit at his grocery store. The turkeys and cookies are now baked in the parish hall kitchen. For over 20 years, Connie Miller and Linda Fischer have prepared the famous turkey salad. The luncheon is a delicious highlight of the Art Show. In recent years, the luncheon has raised over $2,000 for ECW Outreach Programs. At each service in June, we will be asking for turkey sponsorships. Look for the big BUY A TURKEY poster in the Parish Hall.

SUPPORT THE ART SHOW LUNCHEON

Support our luncheon by purchasing a portion of the turkeys we need to make the turkey salad. Each portion of the turkey is $10, and you can purchase as many as you’d like! Just cut off the form below and turn it into the office, or collection plate.

THE TESTIMONY OF CARE RECEIVERS ..

Do you know someone struggling through hard times? They don't have to struggle alone now that St. Peter's has Stephen Ministers available. Anyone can make a referral. After asking the person for permission to refer to Stephen Ministry, simply contact Fr. Jeff Ross, Fr. Larry Hofer, or Pastor Tom Carlson at St. Peter's Episcopal Church.

Here's a sample of what people who had a Stephen Minister have to say: "Personally I don't know what I

would have done without the love, caring and support that I received from my Stephen Minister. We shared our belief in God, the power of prayer and

faith...listened to my story and allowed me to mourn my loss."

"I strongly encourage members of a Stephen Ministry equipped church to avail themselves of this powerful gift when life presents them with a life changing circumstances."

"I thank God every day for my Stephen Minister. I don't know how I could have made it through the past year without her!"

"Before I had a Stephen Minister, I struggled with whether I even believed in God. Now I have seen God's love face-to-face through my Stephen Minister. It is life-changing!"

"I was ready to give up. But my Stephen Minister wouldn't let me. He kept encouraging me and gave me the motivation to keep going."

"As a man, it was difficult and awkward reaching out for help. But I'm glad I did. I probably could have made it alone, but it sure was a lot easier having a Stephen Minister to talk to."

"I felt guilty about being angry at God. But my Stephen Minister didn't think I was terrible. He was very patient and just listened and cared. He demonstrated Jesus' unconditional love and helped me to trust God again."

"All I can say is thank you. I was so overwhelmed I didn't know where to begin. My Stephen Minister helped me sort through my challenges and regain my faith in God."

YOUTH AND FAMILY M I N I S T R Y ’ S ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND NEEDS: Welcome back Father Jeffrey. We are glad you had a very rewarding sabbatical. We are very grateful for our office staff, Adele and Vera; for Bob, our able Sexton; and for our three dedicated clergy - Father Mark, Father Larry and Mother Carlyle - who supported St. Peter’s during your absence. We can’t say enough .. thank you to all of you! Last August we offered the position of Youth and Family Minister to Mende George. It is hard to believe that nine months have quickly passed since Mende’s arrival at St. Peter’s. We appreciate the work of our Youth and Family Minister with the parish and want to share with you highlights of her accomplishments during this period: Sustained, consistent attendance

in the youth and children’s programs.

Approximately 25 children were registered for Sunday school with an average attendance of 18 each week.

Children listen attentively to the lessons and demonstrate their learning of the Godly Play lessons. In fact one 4-year old profoundly told Father Mark at the Last Supper what the Holy Spirit meant.

Spy Explorers will commence in the fall with a new curriculum. However, a volunteer is necessary

to assist with this class so Mende can visit with the other classes.

Spy Middle will continue with a new curriculum as well. Tom Sturgis and Karen Kohn will oversee this group; two more volunteers are needed to work with this group in the fall.

Spy High will continue in the fall with a new curriculum and volunteers are sought to help.

Some of the other program highlights were the Christmas Pageant, Stations of the Cross, Easter Egg Hunt, the Children’s Lenten Series, and this June the Walk with the Youth from St. Peter’s and the Lakota youth of any faith or tradition and Vacation Bible School in August.

We have witnessed a new wave of energy in St. Peter's children and youth. Mende is constantly thinking of expanding her programs for our church family. In order to continue the success of the church’s children and youth programs, we must actively solicit dedicated volunteers to help with these programs. Mende has recruited volunteers this past year who were very dedicated to the Youth and Family Ministry programs and we applaud their support and involvement. The momentum is there but we can only make this important initiative work with more volunteers to assist Mende with her ministry for us all.

We believe there is a huge potential to expand educational opportunities to include classes and/or series for adults, inter-generational activities, Godly Play at Cadbury or nursing home settings to name just a few. The opportunities are endless and are only limited by time, money and volunteers. Thus, we ask St. Peter's parishioners to dedicate their valuable time in the fall to participate and volunteer in the Youth and Family Ministry Programs. Volunteers are vital to these programs. The ideal volunteer is one who can contribute on a regular basis at least twice a month during the educational season. We hope to hear from you. Just call the office and speak to Adele or Vera to add your name to the list. Tom Crowley, a Vestry member and head of Stewardship, has written “the mantra of stewardship is "time, talent treasure". Maybe you can add some of this to Mende's efforts! Remember too, that everything you contribute aids and helps with everything else. The sum is greater than the parts!” Peace, Karen Fischer, Senior Warden Stuart Brahs, Junior Warden

DID YOU KNOW? While a large portion of the world desperately seeks clean drinking water, the United States and other countries spend billions on bottled water when perfectly clean drinking

water is readily available. Not only are we needlessly spending money on water with lower standards than those of tap water, we are also filling our landfills with billions of pounds of oil based plastics that take 1000’s of years to degrade. (www.onlineeducation.net/bottled water) THE FOLLOWING IS A MESSAGE FROM ST. PETER’S ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITTEE: It has been nearly one year since the Environmental Committee sponsored our “Back 2 the Tap!” project at the annual Art Show in an attempt to put a small dent in that “billions of pounds of oil based plastics” (i.e. disposable water bottles) that end up in landfills. (Even though all those water bottles are recyclable, sadly, only 1 in 5 ever makes it to a recycling center.) This “War on Bottled Water” (as we began calling it among ourselves) was an ambitious project that was met with varying degrees of skepticism, resistance and doubts from folks who didn’t think it would work, or thought it would just be easier to continue selling commercially bottled water as had been done in previous years. Nevertheless, our small (but mighty) band of “Water Warriors” pulled it off — much to our delight and other’s surprise. Now, for those of you who may be wondering, “What the heck is ‘Back 2 the Tap!’?” here’s the “Reader’s Digest” version. (*more information can be found at the website link AND QR CODE found at the end of this article) Our idea was to offer free (City of Lewes) water to anyone who wanted it. If they had their own container (bottle, thermos, cup, etc.) great! If not, we’d have 21 ounce, refillable/reusable/recyclable bottles for sale for the same price ($1) as 16.9 ounces of commercially bottled water. And, even better .. unlimited free refills of “cool, clear” Lewes water would be offered all day long. Was it a lot of work? Sure was .. especially since it hadn’t been done before and we really had no “history” to guide us. Was it worth it? You better believe it! We received positive feedback and many thanks from both the artists

and the patrons. The only disappointment that day was the fact that we didn’t have enough refillable bottles to meet the demand of everyone who wanted one. Well, we’ll be prepared this year! And speaking of being prepared .. this is where we offer you the opportunity to become a “Water Warrior” for “Back 2 the Tap!” - 2014. There are a variety of jobs to be done before, during, and after the actual hours of the Art Show (9:00—3:00) in order for this project to run smoothly, so people power is important. But, equally important is the equipment needed, particularly coolers. Both the 5 gallon (or larger) dispensing type like contractors and sports teams use and large chest type coolers are needed. Rolling carts or dollies to make the transporting of bottles and coolers easier are a necessity, too. Sooo .. if some of you readers have any of the “said equipment” and would be willing to lend it to the committee, that would be wonderful! Just let us know. Also, if you’re interested in “being a part of the action” on the day of the Art Show let us know about that, too. You can contact Diane Wilson (Environmental Committee Chair) either by email [email protected] or phone 645-5268, and she’ll be glad to answer questions, enlist you as a “Water Warrior” or make arrangements to pick up any equipment you’re willing to lend us. I imagine you’ve all heard that “many hands make light work” and that will surely be true for “Back 2 the Tap!” - 2014. Also true will be the fact that this is an ideal opportunity for us to once again do something positive for “this fragile earth, our island home.” (BCP p.370) *http://stpeterslewes.org/#/outreach -miss ions/environmental
