Grade 1 Report ....

As part of our MAPPAN unit ‘Celebrating Differences’ Grade 1 went on an excursion to the Melbourne Museum. The students

explored the various exhibits throughout the museum with a particular focus on the themes of Melbourne history, cultural

diversity and the First Peoples of Victoria. It was a fantastic day and everyone enjoyed themselves thoroughly!

On Friday, to celebrate the cultural diversity of the students at Preston Primary School, Grade 1 children brought a traditional

food from their family background to share with everyone. Some foods included sushi, pastizzis, Koulourakia Greek cookies,

scones and so much more.

The students had the best time!

Grade 2 Report ....

Throughout Term 3 the Grade 2 children have been reading and writing information reports. They have learnt lots of new and

interesting facts about a range of topics. We created some amazing fact towers full of fascinating facts!

Folivores are animals that mostly eat leaves. – Evie C

Cenotaphs are special monuments and statues to remember soldiers that died at war. – Sid W

When water freezes it gets bigger. – Ruby W

The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of freedom. – Beckett S

Sunflower cake cannot be eaten by a human. – Andy M

Grade 4 Report ....

The Art of Clean Up by Ursus Wehrli

“The modern world can get messy but Swiss artist Ursus Wehrli tidies it up with humour and design.”

In Maths we have started working on learning about shape and symmetry. As inspiration for one of our lessons we read the Art

of Clean Up which is book full of photos of objects before and after being organised in a range of interesting ways. The students

were fascinated by the images and excited to create some of their own. They worked in small groups to collect objects, then

based on their collection choose how to sort them.

“We used bottle lids and the first time we sorted them into size and then we sorted them by colour.” Eleni

“At first they start off all scrambled and then once they are sorted they are so neat. The second time we sorted them we started to create a

symmetrical pattern by placing one either side of the line of symmetry.” Kayla

“We had the box of dice and there were different sections of different dice and they were all muddled up. We tidied up each type of dice

in a different compartment. We tried to make it symmetrical too but we couldn’t make it work with all the dice.” Sienna

Drama Report ....

Finally, show day arrived! The Grade 6 students delivered two superb performances of their original drama show, “Museum of

Marvels”, at Reservoir High School two weeks ago. There were excellent comedic scenes, mime, puppetry and stories – including

a giant Dinosaur skeleton, the Lost Property desk, hidden portals, mummies, a runaway Viking Ship and a huge egg - and once

again our fabulous school band was part of the entertainment. We hope you enjoyed seeing your children perform - they had a

great time sharing it with you, as well as with the Grade 4 and 5 students at the dress rehearsal. I know the Grade 6 staff and

myself couldn’t have been more proud of our Grade 6 students’ creative work, team spirit and support for one other.

In Grade 5 we have been developing our drama making skills with a focus on clear storylines. Students have been creating

original narratives in response to a given story title such as “The Worst Birthday Ever”. Terrific storylines and character acting

have been demonstrated by the students.

In Grade 4 we have also been developing our drama making skills with a focus on clear beginnings to our scenes. At present, the

students are devising performances called “The Case of the Missing School Project”. Some exciting and inventive explanations for

missing projects have emerged. Well done everyone.

I wish everyone a happy and relaxing holiday.

Junior School Council…..

Crazy Hair/Socks Day

Thank you to everyone for your participation. It was great to see so many crazy hairstyles and wacky socks! We raised an

amazing $841.60 for the Make a Wish Foundation.

Get ready, get set for Walk to School 2019!

Preston Primary School has joined the hundreds of primary schools across Victoria for a fun month of walking, riding and

scooting to and from school. By participating, we have a chance to win some great prizes!

From October 7th to November 1st we will be encouraging our entire school to walk, ride and scoot to school. If your child

can’t walk, ride or scoot to school, there are heaps of ways they can still get involved in the fun.

Part way is okay! If you can’t walk the whole way, why not try parking the car a few blocks from your school and walk, ride or

scoot the rest.

Kids are healthier and happier when they’re active every day. Walking kids to school is a great opportunity to get them active

and build their confidence and life skills. It’s also a chance for everyone to spend some quality family time together.

About Walk to School Every October, VicHealth’s Walk to School encourages Victorian primary school kids and their families to walk, ride or scoot

to and from school every day.

Studies show that it takes 30 days to build a habit. The longer we do something healthy, the more likely that healthy habit will

stick. That’s why Walk to School lasts for an entire month, rather than a single day. It’s about building healthy habits for life.

Along with the health benefits, it also reduces traffic congestion, saves on parking, helps us connect with family and friends and

saves the environment!

Find out more about Walk to School by visiting www.walktoschool.vic.gov.au

PPS Sustainability Team update

This month School Council approved our new Sustainability Policy

Statement. It covers areas of focus as well as the start of our

Action Plan. This document will soon be available on the website.

Thank you to everyone who has sent emails with feedback and

suggestions.

Some items we are currently looking at and hope to plan in Term 4 at the school are:

Recycling,

supporting the Art Show to be a sustainable event,

Redcycle and Terracycle collection points,

Resource Smart School,

Environmental Workshops,

and more

Suggestions, feedback and helping hands welcomed. Please email us at [email protected] .

Do you want to know more about Climate Change?

Would you like to discuss this and get tips on how to

talk to your children about Climate Change?

If so, let us know so we can organise a group chat

perhaps with a cup of tea.

Information can also be found here and on this video.

Enjoy the holidays!

Head Lice ….

A reminder to parents to regularly check your child’s hair for head lice.

Headlice are extremely contagious.

We suggest that you look for the following symptoms or signs that would indicate the presence

of headlice:

Generally: child scratching his/her head excessively,

On pillows: fine black powder or pale coloured material,

In the hair: signs of lice eggs (“nits” – cream or coffee coloured specks close to hair

roots,

Lice: small white or ‘greyish’ parasites the approximate size of a pinhead.

If you notice any of the above signs, treatment should be commenced immediately as your child

could be excluded from school if not treated.
