Still Calling the Circle It seems like only weeks ago that small groups at Binkley were the new “buzz”, and here it is nearly May! While small groups have long been a vital part of Binkley, many of us sensed a need to call some new circles as 2012 began. Back in not-so-cold January, several groups were created, and now a few of those have come to a close. The reviews are positive: we can celebrate the opportunities folks have had both to listen and to be listened to, as well as to enjoy being with Binkley friends and acquaintances in meaningful ways.

Priscilla Bratcher and I had the joy of calling together a Girls Sharing Group in January. Meeting for six weeks, our group of 6th-7th grade girls explored topics such as friendship, self-esteem, and stress. In a moment of serendipity, we decided to plan worship together around the biblical story of the courageous Queen Vashti. Each girl responded to the story aloud in worship—each with wisdom and insight! Another spirituality group met weekly in my office during the Church School hour, ending at Easter; leaders Meg Graham and Beth Welton reflected that the encounter was rich for all. Still another group, facilitated by Martha Hamilton and me, met every other week to explore interesting themes of our spiritual autobiographies.

While these were “closed” groups—in order to support stability and confidentiality—other groups have been open to occasional and steady participation. Ashley Nissler facilitates the ongoing Movie-Night Group, enabling folks the opportunity to see good films with Binkley friends. The playlist has included Academy winners and rarer finds. And even if you cannot carry a tune, it is well worth your time to come out on a Tuesday evening for “Mostly Music.” Billy and Ann Barnes, along with Peter Carman, host a sing-along of familiar songs, rare treasures, and favorite hymns. When I visited the group, Mel Anderson’s harmonica enhanced the chorus of guitars, voices, and an amusing rhythm section. The next gathering is May 1st. This Sunday, April 29th, the Faith Issues Group, a monthly group, meets after worship to share around questions of faith--how beliefs work in a complex world facilitated by Jan Clark along with Peter Carman. Of course, other tried-and-true small groups continue to flourish. An oldy, but goody—Sermon Shaping on Tuesdays at 1:00 p.m.—offers another safe space to explore beliefs, ideas about Scripture, justice, and spirituality. If you can change your lunch hour and join in, you are most welcome. Opportunities for prayer are also vital to the life of faith, and you can find spiritual strength in two small groups always open to newcomers: Wednesday Morning Prayer in the Chapel at 9:00 a.m. and Veni Spiritus, prayer-filled chanting on Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m.

FROM STEPHANIE FORD…

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: “Baobab Blast”, June 25-29 ~ 9am.-12pm: Vacation Bible School at Binkley is for children who are 4 years old by August 31, 2012, through those who have completed 5th grade. This year’s theme takes us to Africa and to the amazing Baobab tree, which is vital to wildlife of all kinds on the savannah. The importance of community and the ways we share our faith with others is woven into the children’s discoveries about African animals. Registration for Binkley members is April 29-May 13; for the wider community, May 14-20. (So tell your friends!) Registration forms will be available in the narthex beginning this Sunday. You and your family are then invited to our kick-off at 6:00 pm on Sunday, June 24th

in the sanctuary, with ice cream afterwards. Throughout the week, you’ll bring your child to the sanctuary at 8:50 am; pick up is 12:00 pm, also in the sanctuary. VBS Celebration Sunday is June 26th at the 11:00 worship service. We look forward to learning, playing, and working with your child!

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: Director Needed: Each year, Binkley hosts this important educational opportunity for children in the congregation and as outreach to children in the wider community. The Christian Formation Committee is looking for someone who can offer gifts for organizing the particulars of the program and set-up, coordinating volunteers, and supporting the teachers and children in this incredible week of biblical, ecological, and community learning. The time to act is now for a position that lasts about two months! Please contact Stephanie Ford with your questions and/or interest.

CHRISTIAN FORMATION CELEBRATION SUNDAY, MAY 20: The end of the academic year is coming and it’s time to celebrate Christian formation. On Sunday, May 20, Church School and Worship with Children will end for the semester, and we will honor our teachers and educational leaders during worship. Please join us for the worship celebration and for the End-of-Year Picnic, beginning at 3:00 p.m. at the Fews Ford Access of the Eno River State Park. Registration for the picnic is May 6-13. Please see weekly announcement updates for more registration information.

SUPPORT MEALS ON WHEELS: The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Meals on Wheels program has been chosen by Whole Foods at 81 South Elliott Road to be the recipient of their 5% Charity Day. If you shop at Whole Foods on May 2nd, our MOW program will get 5% of the net proceeds at the end of the day. This is an excellent opportunity for us to raise both money and awareness of our services, so please encourage everyone you know to shop at Whole Foods in Chapel Hill on May 2nd! We currently serve 115 meals daily, and only a fraction of those people can pay for the cost of the meal. Gaining the support of the community is vital for us to be able to continue to offer our services. We recently added a tenth route due to increased demand and we remain committed to meeting the need and never having a waiting list. Several Binkley members give of their time and energy as MOW volunteers. For their service, we are proud and grateful.

TREASURE HUNTING FOR THE YARD SALE: YOUR KITCHEN

We trust you are signing up, sorting and storing while nurturing seedlings for the Yard Sale. Let's also start treasure hunting in the kitchen. In order to inspire you, Binkley poets

Edith Wiggins and Anne Winfield have composed the following:

We Are Itchin' to Get into the Kitchen If you clamor for a beater, a wooden spoon or pan- If you need potato ricers or you plan to make a flan,

The keepers of the kitchen can find you that and more, We’ll have utensils by the hundreds and dishes by the score.

There will be cutting boards and glasses When our tables we supply with the extras from YOUR cupboards

That someone else can buy. So do clean out your cabinets but give us all your extras, those sifters or salt shakers.

We will display them in our kitchen room, priced, ready for inspection. Donate your kitchen overflow for another’s kitchen resurrection.
