We have had another wonderful year receiving your news, seeing you at reunions and hearing of your times at St Teresa’s. We are always delighted when old girls pop in to take a look around and we had an unexpected visit recently from Solmi Jung who is now a famous actress in Korea using the screen name Eunchae Jung. She was delighted to see Susie Coughlin and Janet Gardner, both of whom she remembered very well.Although much has changed – for the better – including the landscaping, the new Felstead Sixth Form Centre and the Equestrian Centre, the heart is still the same and lots will still be familiar so do pop in and see us. It is best to call first just to make sure there is someone to show you around.GDPR – Please reaffirm your membership of STOGA if you haven’t done so already. Reunions & Events ANNUAL REUNION

REUNIONS & EVENTS STOGA 2019

We had a good turnout at the Annual Reunion and we seem to get more guests each year, which is fabulous! It is always great to see the happy faces as girls reunite with old friends.

In memory of Lindy Williams (1953) former STOGA Chairperson, brown owl and parent an evergreen Magnolia Tree was planted outside the chapel and blessed by Deacon Simon Conrad on the day of the reunion.

Judy, Bridget, Jennie

Lindy’s daughters Judy, Bridget and Jennie all attended St Teresa’s and they commissioned a beautiful, stylish bench which is placed in a sunny spot outside the chapel with views towards the stables and the swimming pool as riding and swimming were two of Lindy’s passions.

In October we celebrated 90 years of St Teresa’s and the Statue of Our Lady was restored to her former glory for the occasion!

SOHO SAUNTER TILLINGBOURNE TRAIL

Brenda Gazzard and Janet, Liz McLaren, Simone Ellis, Di Cheverley, Margaret Nakkas, Stephanie Wilson Carey, Pam Hanratty, Clare Dawson and friend joined us for this guided walk which took us through China Town as it was waking up in the morning, through Berwick Street market and Carnaby street, past the site of the 2i’s café where the rock and roll musicians used to hang out. Soho once the red light district full of strip clubs, massage parlours and sex cinemas has been cleaned up. Once dirty, smelly and noisy Soho has changed and is now an exciting mix of pubs, restaurants, cafés and markets but it is looking up where you find the interesting mosaics and relics of the past. Famous for Paul Raymond’s Revue Bar – the world centre of erotic entertainment. Paul Raymond magazine publisher and property magnate sold off many of the buildings which were replaced by modern blocks. In September 1854 the cholera outbreak was centred in the Soho district close to Dr John Snow’s house. He noticed a particular cluster of outbreaks around a pump in Broadwick Street. He had the pump handle removed and the outbreak subsided.

Anne Jackson, Deborah Wagstaff, Ruth Pott, Sandra Leyton, Carol Smith, Lindsey Thynn and Hilary Suckling all former parents joined this local walk which took in the picturesque village of Shere as well as a climb up through the Albury estate, through woodland trails besides the Tillingbourne and finishing at the White Horse in Shere for a well deserved lunch.

ISLINGTON PARKS & GARDENS

This was an area new to us all and a very interesting one too. Islington is full of period houses around garden squares as well as a very buzzy Upper Street – a mile long stretch of restaurants and small independent shops leading to Angel underground. In the event it was a very hot day in April and we had to pace ourselves on this self-guided walk with many stops on the shady park benches alongside the sunbathers on the grass!

Friday 20th April 2018

NOTTING HILL WALKTuesday 15th May 2018Yet another glorious day taking in the houses of the rich and famous, walking past pretty colourful cottages along Portabella Road market before coming to Westbourne Grove and the designer shops, then onto the famous bookshop from Notting Hill and finally the Ladbroke Arms to quench our thirst and for a well earnt rest. We were fortunate to have Stephanie’s daughter a former resident of the area as a guide!

Vicky Reed, Hilary Suckling, Brenda Gazzard, Di Cheverly, Jilly Cooper, Janet, Stephanie Wilson Carey, Stephanie’s daughter and grandson

We couldn’t resist a photo in front of the bookshop made famous by the film “Notting Hill”

KINGSTON UPON THAMES WALK

Sunday 4th November 2018Kingston was a very important River crossing – because it was the first place out of London where the Thames could be crossed as the water was very shallow. Until Putney Bridge was opened in 1729 it was the first bridge along the Thames after London Bridge. Kingston was famous for its fisheries and Tanneries. The three fisheries were mentioned in the Domesday Book and the blue 3 fishes symbol can be seen all over Kingston. Kingston is also the place where 7 Saxon kings were crowned.

The former Boots the Chemist building is not as old as it looks. It was built in 1909 for Boots commemorating local important historical figures, in this case the crowning of 7 Saxon kings. The oldest building in Kingston is the White Company building next door.

Looking towards the coronation stone where 7 Saxon Kings were crowned from 900–979 AD.

The Three fishes are the ancient coat of arms of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. The fish represent the three fisheries mentioned in the Domesday Book.

The wedding day was blustery and freezing cold but it only added to the adventure especially when I lost my veil on the church roof and a lovely Icelandic man had to climb up and get it down! Pre wedding festivities included trips to the Blue Lagoon and Golden Circle.

Annette Varley Butler 1954 If I came home from New Zealand for a visit I would love to come and see the old school again and visit the chapel. I am sure a lot has changed since “my day” It was very strict then. From being woken up at 6.30 every morning with a nun ringing a bell and calling out “praise be Jesus Christ” then us having to rush downstairs for mass (always late always getting a yellow card) then breakfast, making your bed, going to class for study. Then lessons until lunchtime then lessons in the afternoon until 4.15 afternoon tea, then 4.45 to 7.45 study then Benediction then change into Mufti for dinner then into bed by 9.30. Being expected to go up to “Father” to say goodnight prior to going up to bed. The weekends were not much better, sewing in the morning and walks in the afternoon. Luckily I did riding which was a wonderful way of “getting out” and enjoying yourself. We played hockey, tennis and of course, were expected to go swimming in the cold outside pool! (oh the excuses I had to get out of that!)

Margaret (Homan) Cianni 1956I guess we have the biggest family on earth. We have 5 daughters who have produced 11 grandchildren and already 12 great grandchildren. I met up recently with Lulu van Damme in India - much younger than me. I am currently very involved with our local parish activities.

Dawn Newman Whyberd (nee Horrill) 1953 (right)

In spite of the very rainy day, it was most enjoyable to return to St Teresa’s. Great to catch up with Sally Gritton and Pauline Lubock. We hope to meet up again in the near future. I was down in Sherborne at the weekend and visited the Abbey. A beautiful building, renowned for its glorious fan-vaulted roof, stained glass windows, the choir, organ music, its peal of eight bells, and the fine engraved glass reredos by Lawrence Whistler in the Lady Chapel. An enjoyable tour, in my opinion a “must” for all those who visit Sherborne. This is my current news, but have done a good deal of travelling this year, here in the UK. Happy days.

Maggie Tam 1994 with Janet Gardner and Margaret (Auger) FordThank you very much for organizing the 2018 STOGA reunion. It was the first school reunion I attended and it was lovely to see classmates and teachers (Mrs. Auger and Mrs. Gardner!).

Well, it’s been quite a while since I graduated from St. T’s (1994). To recap the last 2+ decades, I went to Vancouver, Canada for university (Mrs. Gardner, I turned down Oxford). My mother was ill at the time and wished for the family to be near her. I did graduate studies in Chemistry at Washington State University and got my PhD. I am now settled in Ottawa, Canada. My friends from St. T’s know that I’ve never been a party person, so I think they will be surprised to hear that I am on the social committee at work, organizing fundraising events and Christmas parties. I quite enjoy volunteering. I volunteer as a unit guider with my neighbourhood Girl Guides Brownies unit, with a local storytelling group, and I serve on the board of directors for a science association in my field of studies (International Society for Ion Mobility Spectrometry). I have many fond memories from St. T’s and I treasure the friendships. I look forward to future STOGA reunions!

Our parish priest Father Bill from Saint Joseph’s in Epsom flew over to marry us. My whole family from England also flew over for the wedding as well as my husband’s family from Holland. It was an amazing week. We also had the privilege of visiting different parts of Japan for our honeymoon. We are very blessed and happy.

Davinia (Harrison) Harrison-Smith 2003I got married to my husband Sean Smith on the beautiful island of Koh Samui in Thailand where we tend to go for holidays. We are soon to celebrate our 6 year anniversary. Almost 3 years ago we were blessed with the arrival of our daughter, Winter Skye who weighed 3 pounds when born. She is now fully grown and is just like any other 3 year old with a big personality. We just love her and she keeps us very busy.

OUTSTANDING RESULTSOur girls celebrated some superb examination results this year. Year 11 pupils had tremendous success in the new GCSE exams, with nearly one third of all results being awarded at level eight and nine (equivalent to A*/A** – the latter representing approximately the top 2% of the population) and an overall pass rate (9–4) of 98.5%. These are unequivocally excellent, and every girl deserves to be proud. Not to be outdone, the Upper Sixth leavers also gained excellent A Level results, and nearly all girls gained a place at their first-choice university. We wish them well as they embark on the next exciting phase of their lives.

Commenting on this success, Deputy Head, Dr McShane said: “We are absolutely delighted with the girls’ performances and we are very proud of each and every one of them. They worked incredibly hard, coping brilliantly with changing curriculum demands and increased academic rigour in both A Level and GCSE qualifications, and they rose to the challenge with aplomb. Both they and the staff deserve enormous congratulations”.

Special congratulations must go to GCSE girls Chloe Roberts, Amelia Grimshaw, Andrea Ize-Iyamu, and Lisa Wang who gained 28 grade 9s (A**) between them; indeed, Lisa gained an incredible clean sweep of 9s, and was one of just 732 pupils nationally to do so.
